SYDNEY AND NEWCASTLE RECOGNISED AS WORLD FESTIVAL AND EVENT CITIES

Sydney and Newcastle have been recognised as World Festival and Event Cities at the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) 59th Annual Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri, USA this week.

It is the fifth time Sydney has received the honour, and the second time for Newcastle, reinforcing NSW’s position as one of the world’s leading destinations for tourism and events.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer, Sandra Chipchase, said: “We can all be proud of the recognition Sydney and Newcastle have received, placing Sydney it in its rightful position as the major events capital of Australia, while also proving Newcastle is gaining recognition as one of Australia’s leading major events and tourism destinations.”

“Since Destination NSW was created, we have been focused on developing the NSW Events Calendar as the most compelling in Australia and these awards prove that we are achieving that goal,” Ms Chipchase said.

President and CEO of IFEA, Steven Schmader, praised Sydney and Newcastle for distinguishing themselves in the criteria considerations that define a World Festival & Event City.

“Uniquely, Sydney is the only city to have received the award every year since its inception, five years ago. I believe that is a statement and a tribute to the level of quality and professionalism – by both city and events - that you have dedicated yourselves to and, by achieving, set as an example for your global peers to aspire to,” Mr Schmader said.

“Newcastle has been recognised officially as a 2014 IFEA World Festival & Event City, in recognition of the City’s community leadership and ongoing, concerted efforts to provide a positive local environment that is conducive to, and encourages the success and growth of, festivals and events,” he said.
