Opportunities and challenges for tourism industry in the 4th Industrial Revolution

Overview of the workshop
On 18 April 2018, in Ha Noi, Pacific Asia Travel Association’s (PATA) Viet Nam Chapter organized the workshop on “Opportunities and challenges for tourism industry in the 4th Industrial Revolution”.

The workshop had the attendances of Vice Chairwoman of Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong; representatives of departments and units under VNAT; some tourism training establishments; members of PATA Viet Nam Chapter and tourism enterprises in Ha Noi.

At the opening speech, Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong said that the 4th Industrial Revolution has created big changes in global manufacturing and services, including tourism. The way which visitors choose to experience the journey is constantly changing and increasing C2C oriented. In this context, digital marketing has become a real challenge for tourism industry, demanding right strategies to attract visitors.

Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong emphasized that Viet Nam's tourism is expected to make more outstanding contributions and become a key economic sector. The successful application of advanced technology in tourism will play an important role to enhance national competitiveness and business development.

At the workshop, Speaker Professor Anya Diekmann - Director of the Institute for Environmental Management, Land-use Planning and Tourism (IGEAT) under University of Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) introduced and shared the concept of the 4th Industrial Revolution as well as approach of visitors and businesses; information on search engines and how to operate and promote digital marketing effectively; challenges that enterprises face in the context of the 4th Industrial Revolution, etc.

In addition, Ms. Anya Diekmann also showed that the quality of human resources is important to promote tourism activities. Quality human resources and good services will make strong impression on visitors and contribute to branding for enterprises. Therefore, tourism industry needs to improve the quality of human resources to meet the requirements of tourism development in the context of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Ms. Anya Diekmann also said that Viet Nam is one of the leading countries in catching the trend of the 4th Industrial Revolution, including the field of tourism. Promoting digital tourism is the right direction, creating more competitive opportunities for small and medium tourism enterprises.
