X Base Backpackers Sydney - an awesome hostel experience

X Base Backpacker Sydney
The X Base Backpackers hostel is the ideal base for your stay in Sydney. It is very centrally located just behind Sydney Town Hall. Even Lonely Planet Base considers X Base Sydney to be the most centrally located backpacker accommodation in Sydney.

If coming by train, it is just a matter of getting off the train and walking along the underground Town Hall Arcade and you are right there at X Base Backpackers in King Street.

The motto at X Base is "At Base it's all about the traveller!". This was evident during my recent stay at Base where they looked after me in awesome ways after my 5 hour train journey to Sydney.

The reception staff were friendly and welcoming and explained clearly the various features of the hostel and where my room was located. Reception is open 24 hours a day. A travel, tour and job desk is located near reception.

There is a variety of room styles available to choose form at X Base Backpackers, including private double and 4, 5, 6, 8 or 10 bed shared rooms. I was perfectly happy with my private double room on the 3rd floor. It was not a huge room, but large enough for a comfy double bed with quality linen and small table. The room was accessed by security swipe card. It had its own individually controlled air-conditioner and flat screen TV on the wall.

The best thing about the room was its cleanliness. The carpet and walls were spotless. A window overlooking the street provided natural daylight, and curtains kept out the street lighting at night time. I thought that my room may have been noisy at night, but this wasn't the case. I did not hear any noise from the street traffic, or from nearby entertainment venues, or from the guests in nearby rooms. I had a good night's sleep.

My private room did not have an ensuite, but this was no hassle as there were nearby single shower rooms and toilets. (Some of the other private rooms do have ensuites.)

The ground floor lounge area was next to reception and had plentiful comfy leather lounges and chairs. I could have paid extra for the provision of WiFi in the room, but I was happy with the free WiFi available in the lounge area.

Each morning I sampled the different options for breakfast available. One  morning I went to one of the many nearby cafes and bought a egg an bacon roll that came with a free coffee. The other morning I was happy with the breakfast provided at the X Base Backpackers, on site cafe consisting of orange juice, cereal, toast & spreads and tea/coffee.  This is $6, but it is value as it is an eat as much as you want to breakfast.

To go between the various floors of X Base, which is spread over several buildings, there is the choice of stair wells or a lift.

In the basement there is a large kitchen and dining room with plenty of gas and electric hotplates, microwaves, sinks, refrigerators and food storage shelves. The kitchen had plenty of pots, pans, plates, bowls and cutlery available. A laundry provides coin operated washers and dryers.

Being so central in Sydney, it is easy to get to the various attractions that Sydney has to offer its visitors. X Base Backpackers hostel also run free activities everyday including a beach trip to Bondi with a free BBQ on the beach.

Scary Canary Bar
Day and night time entertainment is provided at Scary Canary Bar, a new party den located right next door to X Base Backpackers. It provides music, drinks and competitions for the young enthusiastic crowd that flocks there. It is so popular that on some nights it is a matter of queuing up before being allowed in. It also serves lunch and dinner daily.

The Sydney X Base Backpackers is part of a group of X Base hostels that are located in other capital cities and towns in Australia and also in New Zealand.

I was curious about the X in the hostels name, and found out that it means 'X marks the spot'. Just as I found out with my stay in Sydney at X Base Backpackers, 'X' does mark the spot where you'll find what you're looking for in an awesome hostel experience.
