Melbourne's status as a gateway to Australia and continued growth in visitors to Victoria are helping drive record passenger numbers through Melbourne Airport. The airport now connects international markets to Melbourne on 25 airlines and saw its international passenger traffic reach 8.1million during the 2014 calendar year, an increase of 8% over 2013. North Asia led this growth with Japan, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan all growing by more than 15% during this period, including a 53% increase from Japan.

Furthermore international passenger growth through Melbourne Airport has now outstripped Sydney and Brisbane for five consecutive years, demonstrating 53% cumulative growth over 2010-2015, compared to Sydney Airport (22%) and Brisbane (19%).

Growth in air travel to Victoria is originating from every region in the world, with traffic from Europe, North Asia, South East Asia and North America all increasing. Examples of international visitor growth by passport origin in the 2014 calendar year include the USA (8.9%), Canada (9%), China (19.9%), Taiwan (16%), India (9.4%), Malaysia (11.2%), Germany (13.9%), France (27.6%) and Italy (9.4%).

This growth is set to continue through 2015. Melbourne Airport's third quarter results indicate that international passenger figures are already at 8.2million for the first three quarters of 2014-15, an increase of 9% over the same period in 2013-14.

Furthermore, March 2015 saw Melbourne experience its highest rate of international passenger growth ever, with 18% growth over March 2014, reflecting the economic benefits to Victoria of attracting major international events, such as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, and growth in business and leisure tourism to Victoria from around the world.
