Gelato Messina - the standout star of all gelato!

Gelato Messina
The Star in Sydney is famous for its Casino, the Lyric Theatre .... and Gelato Messina.

Recently before seeing a show at the Lyric I had the pleasure of visiting Gelato Messina, located right next door. After devouring many samples of its wonderful gelato and sorbet I can understand why so many people queue up to experience its huge range of taste sensations.

The first Gelato Messina store was opened in Darlinghurst in 2002 by Famiglia Palumbo and tribe with their Sicilian heritage and love of gelato.

The Star Gelato Messina opened in 2011 after the revamp of The Star was completed. They provide many amazing flavours of gelato and sorbet to choose from.

There are 40 different mouth watering flavours of Gelato for you to sample and buy. Yes, they do not mind giving you sample tastes of the different flavours, which include -
Gelato Messina
  • Apple Pie
  • Banana Split
  • Bounty
  • Caramelised White Chocolate
  • Choc Mint
  • Milk Chocolate with Choc Peanut Fudge
  • Chocolate Chip
  • Coconut & Lychee
  • Coffee
  • Hazelnut
  • Italian Nougat
  • Pear & Rhubarb
  • Poached Figs in Marsala

Five special flavours of gelato are only available for one week. There is a new one added every day from Monday to Friday and it stays in the cabinet for only the next seven days. The day I went to the Star Gelato Messina the 5 special flavours were -
Gelato Messina
  • Monkey Business - light caramel gelato smashed with banana bread and nutella whip
  • Mango Cheesecake - cheesecake gelato with mango puree & crushed biscuit
  • ANZAC Bikkies - golden syrup and coconut gelato packed with ANCAC bikkies
  • Coppers Delight - peanut butter and coffee gelato layered with coffee caramel and doughnuts
  • Cookies - jersey milk fiore di latte gelasto smashed with random homemade cookies

They also have a range of delicious Sorbets -
  • Salted Coconut and Mango Salsa
  • Blood Orange
  • Chocolate Sorbet

  • Mango
  • Pandan & Coconut
  • Passionfruit
  • Raspberry
  • Strawberry
  • Mandarin

I was fortunate to be served by Pat, the Manager of The Star Gelato Messina. Even though the store was busy with people eager to be seduced by the gelato and sorbet, she gave me the time of day to explain the Gelato Messina concept and let me sample many of the flavours. These were attractively displayed in the cabinets - they all looked good.

There were so many that I liked and fell in love with that it was hard to choose the two flavours for my scoops in the cup. I finally settled on the Monkey Business gelato special of the week and the Raspberry sorbet. They were both awesome!

The good thing about Gelato Messina is they make all the gelato and sorbet fresh each day in their own kitchen. Only raw and natural ingredients are used, with no artificial flavours, colours, or preservatives. Their passion about using only the best fresh ingredients means their gelato has full bodied texture and flavour. They do not compromise on making the best gelato in Australia.

A new Messina Dessert Bar has opened up next to the Gelato Messina store in Darlinghurst. Here you can either choose one of their suggested Sundaes or build your own Sundae creation. The suggested creations come with the mind blowing names of Pis-tached Out, I Choux You, Caramel Love Pocket, Tea Time Treat, Rainbow Time, Holy Choc, Getting Toasted and  Anti-yoga. You can see what each of these looks like by clicking on http://www.gelatomessina.com/au/messina-dessert-bar/. It would be hard to come up with a more exciting creation, but the opportunity is there to let your imagination run wild, so go and do it! The hardest part for you is to come up with a catchy name for what you have created.

Can't get enough of Gelato Messina in a cone or cup? Like to impress your family and friends at your next special gathering? Then a Gelato Messina cake is the way to go. They have a range of styles of gelato cakes that look absolutely devine and would be the ideal centrepiece at any celebration. Get your mouth watering by looking at the photos on http://www.gelatomessina.com/au/cakes/

A good way to fully experience Gelato Messina is to attend one of their three hour Saturday morning classes at the Messina Headquarters in Sydney. They offer two types, a Gelato Appreciation Class and a ‘hands on’ Gelato Making Class. Both are fun ways of learning, creating, and eating. The bad news is that because these classes are so popular they are booked out way up until the end of August this year. The good news is that more classes will be available for booking later this year and next year. Details of the classes can be found here - http://www.gelatomessina.com/au/classes/

Gelato Messina
Far better than the few photos I took and placed here are the many photos on the Gelato Messina website. To see the mouth watering array of gelato creations go to http://www.gelatomessina.com/au/gallery/ and feel good by just looking at the photos before you give in and rush out to taste them for yourself.

To make someone very happy you can give them a Gift Voucher for use at one of the Gelato Messina stores. They make an awesome present & they will think you are great for giving them such a yummy present! Just pop in to one of the Gelato Messina stores to purchase them.

When you venture away from Sydney you can find Gelato Messina shops in other parts of Australia, and even one in Las Vegas! Yes, you can enjoy your Gelato Messina when away on holidays or business!
