Queenstown takes on the world in Monopoly!

Queenstown is competing with the world’s top destinations to win a place on the new global Monopoly Here & Now: World Edition game.

Celebrating the MONOPOLY brand’s 80th anniversary, the special new edition will feature great cities from around the world that have been voted onto the board game by fans.

Queenstown is the only New Zealand destination chosen to be a contender for the Monopoly Here & Now: World Edition and is up against some of the world’s hot spots including Barcelona, New York, Hong Kong and Sydney. With only 20 spots available, and 80 countries competing to occupy real estate on the world’s most popular game, competition is tough.

Getting Queenstown on the board depends on the number of people who visit www.VoteMONOPOLY.com and vote for Queenstown. Voting is open from 14 February until 3 March 2015 and fans can share their vote on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #VoteMONOPOLY. The twenty cities that receive the most votes will be part of Monopoly history on the World Edition Monopoly Here & Now game board and the destination with the highest number of votes will be placed on the coveted highest rent property, traditionally held by Mayfair.

Destination Queenstown CEO, Graham Budd, says the challenge now is to encourage people, both in New Zealand and internationally, to get behind Queenstown’s challenge.

“We’re asking people to vote for Queenstown to get New Zealand on to the worldwide board for the first time. No New Zealand destination has ever made it on to a global Monopoly board so it would be a huge achievement to see NZ’s premier holiday resort up there with the best of them on this global edition game.

“Queenstown’s reputation as a world class destination helped secure our nomination to represent New Zealand. We need to make a special effort to motivate people to get behind our bid and vote,” says Mr Budd.

Karlie Fox, Promotions Manager at Hasbro NZ, says Queenstown just missed out on its place on the first Monopoly Here And Now board back in 2008, and Hasbro NZ hopes that Kiwis from around the globe will get behind Queenstown to vote to ensure it secures Monopoly real estate in 2015.

“We are thrilled to get Queenstown nominated and now we need all Kiwis to get behind the vote to secure our place on the board,” says Ms Fox.

Voting is underway on the Monopoly website www.VOTEmonopoly.com and closes on 3 March 2015. The final list of cities that will be featured in the Monopoly Here And Now games will be announced on 19 March 2015, World Monopoly Day and the Monopoly brand’s official 80th birthday. The Monopoly Here And Now: World Edition game will be available in September.
