Ashton's Circus Performing in Upper Hunter

Ashton's Circus
Roll up, roll up, the Circus is coming to town!!! Yes Ashtons Circus is coming to three towns in the Upper Hunter Region of NSW Australia

Ashton Entertainment comes from the oldest circus in the English speaking world, “Ashton Circus” and the longest serving performing arts organization in this country.

Over 160 years of circus knowledge, handed down through 7 generations have gone into their latest production now touring Australia, “Circus Circus”.

“Circus Circus” incorporates a magical story line blended with a wide verity of both traditional and modern circus.  Culminating in this new, and exciting Circus experience.

NEW FOR 2012  from Africa THE AFRIKAN WARRIORS.

The Ashton family invites your family to join them under the Big Top as they come to the Upper Hunter on a colourful dream journey through the magical world of pure circus, as seen through the eyes of a child.

Share in the excitement as little Abussy climbs to the top of the High Perch and finally lives his dream of being a circus performer.

Step through the Giant Clown and enjoy a world class action packed, fast moving performance by members of the 5th, 6th and 7th generation of the "Ashton Circus" family.

History
The story of The Ashton’s is very nearly as old as Australia it self, before Federation at least.

Joe, Lorraine, Phyllis, Mervyn, Doug,
Jan with Bull ( the dog)
James Henry Ashton founded the first Australian Circus in the early 1800’s and was first licensed by an act of Parliament in 1851. For his whole life and for generations after, the Ashtons have visited both regional towns and big cities, bringing joy to the people of Australia for over 160 years. For generations, the Ashtons crossed flooded rivers, and deserts, drove through snow-covered mountains, fended off bushrangers, and even traversed where there were no roads to reach the communities who have loved and inspired our family of performers for generations.  People came from all around to enjoy Ashton Circus. In the 1800’s, Ned Kelly sometimes watched the show and even had tea with the performers after the show in gratitude.

James Ashton was well renowned for his charity work and generosity, a tradition carried on to this day by his descendents. In 1996 Doug & Phyllis Ashton both received OAM's for their services to the entertainment industry and charities. Our family has performed throughout the generations, helping many associations to build, fund and deliver their causes.  We have also performed before royalty and been celebrated at the international Monte Carlo “Festival of Circus” by Prince Rainier himself.

Ashton's Circus
The Ashton Family and our circus has grown and changed over 8 generations since James Henry Ashton stated his Circus.

Today, the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th generation of the Ashton family are still on tour. Operating 3 individual Circuses throughout Australia, each of which have grown from the same roots,  all still carrying on this great tradition started so long ago, all proud that they are still bringing affordable family entertainment to fellow Australians.

These circuses are:
- Ashton Entertainment by Jan Ashton-Rodriguez and family (daughter of Doug and Phyllis Ashton), which will be coming to the Upper Hunter.
- Circus Joseph Ashton by Joseph Ashton and family (Grandson of Doug and Phyllis Ashton );
- Lorraine Ashton’s Classic Circus by Lorrain Ashton-Grant and family (Daughter of Doug and Phyllis Ashton)

The Ashton’s are enormously proud of their family, their history, and have maintained a fantastic library of images, news paper clippings & magazine stories which you can share in the picture gallery on their website.

La Fête — French-Thai Cultural Festival

The Embassy of France in Thailand is organizing LA FÊTE from 2 February to 29 March 2012. This is the eighth time in nine years it has been organised. Over a period of nine weeks, more than 20 cultural and artistic events will be presented, mostly French, but Thai as well, covering most fields of creativity.

Bangkok remains central in LA FÊTE, but six other Thai cities will also host parts of its very rich program: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Khon Kaen, and Phuket.

LA FÊTE is well-known for its inventive programming and its many free events. It has become an eagerly anticipated cultural appointment every year, and is now very popular in Thailand. In 2011, over 300,000 people attended at least one event or more; the 2012 edition promises to be just as full of discoveries and emotions!

This year, LA FÊTE will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Alliance française de Bangkok, founded in 1912, co-organizer of the Festival.
Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
The 2012 edition will alternatively present classical, contemporary, and avant-garde events that commemorate the past, as well as celebrate the future of the Franco-Thai institution. The program features new circus, classical music, rock concerts, DJ, modern dance, hip-hop, visual theater, photography, cinema, fashion. There will be something for everyone.

Lounge music lovers can experience LA FÊTE’s first electro-music aperitif in the gardens of Issaya Siamese Club with the DJ from the trendy Parisian boutique Colette (February 18).

Three very visual shows should fully satisfy lovers of creativity and innovation: “Ieto” at Chulalongkorn Sodsai Center (February 9-10); “Stéréoptik” at the brand new Sofitel SO Bangkok (February 22-23); and “Cinematique” at Sodsai Chula (March 2-3).

For dance lovers, the last representations by the most famous Franco-Thai duet, Pichet Klunchun and Jérome Bel, are a must (February 20-21 at Sodsai Chula and February 25 at Vic Hua Hin), as is “La danse, une histoire à ma façon” by Dominique Boivin, one of French contemporary dance’s biggest success, at Patravadi Theater (March 9-10).

Film buffs should also be happy with the French Film Festival at SF World Cinema at CentralWorld (March 9-18).

LA FÊTE presents many free events. Don’t miss anything, see the complete programe and details at: www.lafete-bangkok.com.

Chinese MICE Agents Optimistic

Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre
Outbound Chinese MICE agents at AIME are projecting good business this year, with increased frequency of events and attendance numbers expected.

Din Zhou, account director-corporate accounts department of China CYTS MICE (Guangdong) Service Co, observed two key areas of growth for his company.

“Large companies such as those dealing in direct selling, pharmaceuticals and insurance did well last year and are taking more attendees on incentive trips. We are seeing more than 2,000 pax per event now. There has also been a rise in small high-end incentive groups heading to longhaul destinations,” he said.

Melbourne Convention Centre
“However, with increased headcount, individual budgets for huge incentives have gone down. Clients are maintaining budgets for the key event components but are cutting back on F&B, transfers and tours, so we have to change the way we plan large incentive programs. To keep costs down, we have to use big cities with many hotels located close to large venues and where many flights are available from China. These would be cities such as Bangkok, Singapore and those in Australia.”

Enquiries and bookings for overseas conferences were strong this year, said Shanghai VR Conference Organizer senior account manager, Amanda Xu.

Brisbane Convention Centre
Budgets and attendance numbers were not expected to increase though, she noted, saying: “The domestic market may still be strong for my clients, but profits may have to fill shortcomings in the European or American markets, so decision-makers are still cautious about how they spend on events this year.”

Good prospects in the outbound MICE segment, driven especially by local companies starting to adopt incentive practices, have also motivated Beijing’s Deluxe MICE Tour to expand its destination offerings for meetings and incentives. It is planning to set up a website showcasing five-star hotels and surrounding attractions and venues across the world.

Philippine Tourism Makes History at 3.917 Million Visitors in 2011

Ramon R. Jimenez Jr.
The Philippines eclipsed the previous 3.52-million record for foreign visitors set in 2010 with 3.917 million visitors last year, the Department of Tourism (DOT) reports.

“When the industry exceeds expectations as it had done last year, we feel very encouraged. And with the overwhelming response to our new brand campaign launched last month, we know that we have broken ground on crowdsourcing. The people’s campaign will help bring more numbers,” said Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez Jr.

Even before the new campaign was launched, the initiatives taken by former Tourism Secretary Albert Lim during his tenure have likewise contributed to this milestone. Thus, for the first time in the history of Philippine tourism, total visitor arrivals in the country in 2011 reached 3.917 million -- 11.28% higher than the 3.520 million posted in 2010 and also surpasses by 4.6% DOT’s 2011 target visitor arrivals of 3.7 million.

Albert Lim
The country capped 2011 with 394,567 tourists arriving in December, strongest among all months last year. But November proved to be the biggest gainer, improving 19.80% from the same month in 2010 with 337,021 visitors. Ten out of the twelve months last year saw figures north of 300,000. The 2011 figure also includes returning overseas Filipinos, who numbered 207,152.

East Asia continued to lead all regional markets with 1,837,681 arrivals, 46.91% of the entire number last year. Korea repeated as the strongest single market with 925,204 arrivals for a 23.62% share of all visitor volume. Elsewhere in the region, Japan (375,496 visitors, 9.59% share), China (243,137, 6.21%) and Taiwan (181,738, 4.64%) ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th among all individual markets respectively, while Hong Kong’s 112,106 visitors were good for 9th place. China and Taiwan were the greatest gainers, up 29.71% and 27.58% from 2010, respectively

Visitors from the US, the Philippines’ second-largest tourist market, totaled 624,527 for 15.94% of all tourist traffic. Australia and Canada experienced double-digit growth to 170,736 and 117,423 arrivals, 6th and 9th most among all countries.

Meanwhile, Singapore and Malaysia provided the majority of the 331,672 visitors from ASEAN, with which the Philippines expects greater integration in tourism following the 15th Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers in Manado, Indonesia last month. Northern and Western Europe posted near-identical numbers after modest growth with 164,205 and 157,265 arrivals, respectively.

Philippines
Emerging markets India and Russia continued their rapid ascent, improving 23.89% and 37.86% from 2010 numbers to 42,844 and 20,185 visitors, respectively. The Middle East also remained robust, registering 55,829 arrivals for a 14.60% climb.

With the full rollout of the new “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” international campaign by April, Secretary Jimenez remains confident of achieving another record-breaking year. “Our marketing resource has grown exponentially because of other people’s contributions in kind. We will continue to build on these positive energies to attract 4.2 million this year,” the Secretary enthused

Vietnam Airlines Gets Majority Share in Jetstar Pacific

Jetstar Pacific
Vietnam-based Jetstar Pacific has undergone a change in ownership, with Vietnam Airlines (VNA) picking up a majority stake in the low-cost carrier, which previously belonged to the Vietnamese State Capital Investment Corporation.

Separately, the Qantas Group’s existing 27 per cent share in Jetstar Pacific has now increased to 30 per cent. VNA now owns 69.93 per cent. A new CEO and chairman are expected to be announced soon.

Chief executive of the Qantas Group, Alan Joyce, said: “We are confident this partnership between a low-cost carrier and a full-service airline in Vietnam can replicate the success of our Qantas and Jetstar strategy in Australia, and follows our recent partnership with Japan Airlines to form Jetstar Japan.”

Vietnam Airlines (VNA)
Through the new partnership, Jetstar Pacific will receive an initial capital injection of A$25 million (US$26.6 million), including A$7.5 million from the Qantas Group. This will be directed towards fleet renewal, with the carrier’s current Boeing 737s replaced with new A320s from mid-2012. Jetstar Pacific’s fleet will grow to 15 A320s within the next few years.

The focus will be on serving both domestic and international routes

Prince Picasso Art Exhibition in Spain

Richard Prince
The Picasso Museum in Malaga presents a world premiere exhibition featuring paintings, collages and photo-collages produced by the American artist Richard Prince in the last two years.

Prince is one of the leading artists on the international art scene, and his career has been characterised by the inclusion in his works of icons of popular culture and the communications media, the mechanisms of humour, the common portrayal of women and of sex in the rural world, film culture and the power of photography.

In this exhibition Prince uses the work of Picasso to encourage a sensation of puzzlement in the spectator and to create a distance which drives audiences to reassess prevailing perceptions and conventions on sexuality, eroticism and desire.

Taiwan Promotes Medical Tourism

Taiwan
Taiwan has received a boost as a medical tourism hub when China recently began issuing medical visas for travellers heading to the island to avail of its healthcare facilities and services.

Typically, Taiwanese hospitals rely on travel consultants for visa processing and travel arrangements, as well as any add-on leisure activities, according to Sandy Chu, spokesperson for Lionmedi, Taiwan’s largest supplier of medical tourism-related services.

The medical visas are good for stays of up to 15 days, include the arrival day, a specified number of days for visits to the hospital and an additional three days for sightseeing.

Taiwan
“We are getting enquiries, both directly here in Taiwan and through our China offices,” said Chu, adding that most enquiries received were for non-invasive, low-risk procedures.

The new wave of Chinese coming to Taiwan for medical services are FITs – and could theoretically organise their own visits – but Chu believes most will continue to rely on Taiwan travel companies for assistance.

“First of all, medical tourism in Taiwan is new,” she explained, so few prospective travellers would know how to organise such a trip. “And secondly, the hospitals prefer to work with travel consultants rather than on their own.”

Taiwan
Medical tourism has been on the Taiwan government's radar as early as 2008, according to Jane Chen, section chief, medical affairs, Department of Health (DOH), The Executive Yuan. Last year, 13,914 overseas visitors were served at Taiwanese medical facilities, compared to 5,157 in 2008, the first year the DOH began keeping records.

Unlike Singapore or Thailand, both of which have created single agencies for the management of medical tourism, Taiwan divides responsibilities among several bodies, with the DOH managing medical affairs, and promotion handled primarily by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau and Government Information Office.

An example of a collaborative promotion is a mobile application, available on iTunes since last month, providing a searchable directory of Taiwan healthcare providers serving medical tourists. The app is being promoted by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, which claims 2,000 downloads to date.
