PATA Launches 'Kind Hearts' Initiative at the PATA Annual Summit 2024 in Macao, China

Noor Ahmad Hamid, CEO, PATA and Eric Fong,
Vice Chairman, PATA Macau Chapter and Director of
Marketing Department, Macau International Airport Co. Ltd.
The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) is delighted to announce a new sustainability and social responsibility initiative for the Association's in-person events, launched at the PATA Annual Summit 2024 (PAS 2024) in Macao, China, which took place from May 15-17. This initiative, named PATA Kind Hearts, underscores PATA's commitment to advancing sustainable tourism development and positively impacting local communities in the destinations where the Association’s events are hosted.

Through the PATA Kind Hearts initiative, nearly 100 children's books were donated to libraries of ICM – Instituto Cultural de Macau (Macao Cultural Institute). PAS 2024 delegates, speakers and staff participated by bringing one or more children's books in various languages and genres, which were collected during the event. The donation to ICM was made on stage during the closing ceremony on May 17, by PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid to Eric Fong, Vice Chairman, PATA Macau Chapter and Director of Marketing Department, Macau International Airport Co. Ltd. on behalf of ICM.

According to Noor, "The PATA Kind Hearts initiative was created to spread joy and nurture a love of literature among the children of Macao, China. It reflects our dedication to community engagement and support, with an emphasis on the development and well-being of the younger generation." He added, "The book donations are intended not only as educational resources but, most importantly, as symbols of collective kindness."

This crowdsourcing initiative leveraged the Association’s expansive network, including registered delegates, speakers, members, partners and chapters, uniting various stakeholders in a concerted effort to create positive changes.

Children stand at the forefront of the PATA Kind Hearts initiative. Beyond the immediate joy of receiving a book, this project aims to instil a lasting affection for reading and learning, enhancing literacy skills and supporting their holistic development. By including books that cater to children with special needs, the initiative promotes inclusivity, ensuring every child feels seen, valued and supported.

Together with offsetting PATA's in-person events through supporting local carbon offset projects, the PATA Kind Hearts initiative is part of PATA's efforts to foster sustainable development and make a tangible difference in the destinations that host PATA events.

PATA Navigates the Future of Tourism Workforce at the PATA Youth Symposium 2024 in Macao, China

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) welcomed nearly 200 international and local youth, and industry delegates from over 15 destinations at the PATA Youth Symposium 2024. The event was held on the morning of May 16, 2024, the second day of the PATA Annual Summit 2024 in Macao, China, hosted by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and co-hosted by SJM Resorts, S.A.

The PATA Youth Symposium 2024, hosted by the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), emphasised the importance of developing the next-generation of tourism professionals, bringing together international thought leaders, tourism educators, and future leaders of tourism. The programme consisted of expert keynote speeches, a panel discussion, and roundtable discussions, allowing the youths to engage with industry leaders and peers, share their ideas and insights, and learn about the latest trends in the tourism industry.

In his opening remarks, PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid noted that, “One of the pressing challenges today is the gap between the industry and academia. While the industry is facing difficulties in recruiting and retaining talents, youths are struggling to find viable career opportunities.”

He added, “At PATA, Human Capital Development is a key priority. We are committed to creating a seamless transition for students and young professionals into the travel and tourism workforce. As one of our many initiatives aimed at achieving this goal, the PATA Youth Symposium fostered a dialogue between current and future tourism leaders while paving the way for a more integrated and dynamic workforce in the industry.”

During his opening remarks, Prof. Goh Kok Beng, Dean - Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Macau University of Science and Technology, said, “Thanks to PATA and MGTO, We are very happy to have the opportunity to host the 2024 PATA Youth Symposium. The youth of today will be the tourism leaders of tomorrow. This symposium is an invaluable opportunity to amplify their voices and harness their vision for the future of travel. We are grateful to PATA for providing this important platform for young people.”

Following the opening remarks from PATA and MUST, the Symposium welcomed Andrew Staples, Editorial Director, Impact Initiatives & Alliances and Head of Policy & Insights (Asia), Economist Impact onto the stage. His insightful presentation on the current and future states of economics revealed that the travel and tourism industry remains a thriving sector, continuing to recover towards pre-pandemic levels.

Aiming to keep the youths informed of the tourism industry’s most updated trends, the symposium delved into the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Viola Chan, Manager, Solution, Vpon AI Big Data Group, shared with delegates the role that AI and technology play in supporting productivity and personal advancements while emphasising the importance of learning the mastery of these tools.

Alan Elliott Merschen, Founder, The SIGMUND Project and Partner, International Insights, MMGY Global, delivered a presentation on tourism entrepreneurship. Given the younger generation's interest in starting their own businesses, Alan guided delegates through the course of starting a business, ranging from crafting effective business models to practical budget allocations, and towards the path to successful entrepreneurship.

Youth delegates later participated in roundtable discussions with fellow aspiring tourism professionals. They were given the opportunity to voice their opinions of the industry on the main stage, including what aspects of the industry would urge them to stay within the workforce and what improvements could be made by the industry to effectively recruit and retain tourism talent.

To widen the youths' vision on prospective careers and prepare them for the future, the final session of the PATA Youth Symposium was focused on introducing professions in travel and tourism beyond those at the frontline. Industry leaders from various facets of the tourism industry came together to shed light on the lesser-known professions across different sectors and broadened the younger generation’s understanding of the career opportunities ahead of them.

CAPELLA HOTELS AND RESORTS’ DEBUT PROPERTY IN THE GREATER BAY AREA STANDS TALL IN MACAU

Capella at Galaxy Macau
Capella at Galaxy Macau sets a new standard of luxury in the destination, providing a curated collection of authentic cultural experiences.

Capella Hotels and Resorts, in partnership with Galaxy Entertainment Group, is delighted to announce Capella at Galaxy Macau, a luxuriously serene sanctuary nestled within the vibrant gateway to Hong Kong. An art-filled retreat where guests can savour coveted moments of beauty and tranquillity, the 93-key hotel heralds a new era of exceptional hospitality to Macau when it opens in 2025. “Capella at Galaxy Macau signifies a pivotal moment for Capella Hotels and Resorts as we expand into The Greater Bay Area,” said Evan Kwee, Vice-Chairman of Capella Hotel Group. “Through our partnership with Galaxy Entertainment Group, we are excited to introduce travellers to Macau’s rich cultural heritage, delivering thoughtful and enriching experiences while fostering meaningful connections with the local community.”

Design: Tranquil elegance in the vibrant cultural heart of Macau

The first Capella Hotels and Resorts to open in The Greater Bay Area, Capella at Galaxy Macau brings to the forefront the destination’s vibrant and diverse cultural heritage. Interwoven into integrated resort destination Galaxy Macau™, the 17-storey hotel features 36 expansive Sky Villas. Each Sky Villa boasts a spacious, light-filled private balcony complete with a full-length transparent infinity-edge swimming pool, outdoor lounge, and sunroom. Designed to effortlessly transition between seasons, the coveted Sky Villas feature a hidden winter garden, offering guests the transformative experience of nature’s tranquillity.

Meaningful connections drive the design narrative of the villas, with spaces for guests to bask in the joy of togetherness, such as an entertainment lounge, games room, and a contemporary bar highlighted by rare spirits and cocktails. Meanwhile, the 57 suites boast spacious private plunge pools and expansive balconies offering views of the city’s scenic architecture.

Artful interiors by Bruno Moinard and Claire Bētaille, of the globally esteemed Paris-based interior design firm Moinard Bētaille, build on Capella Hotels and Resorts’ legacy of melding contemporary elegance with distinctive individual design. Eager to create a sanctuary of solace, the duo has curated a haven of effortless sophistication, with radiant interiors — comprising hand-painted wallpaper by Lala Curio — that celebrate the vibrant colours of Macau’s verdant tropical jungles and natural wonders.

Enhancing Moinard Bétaille’s design is a diverse contemporary art collection. The art pieces transcend beyond the decorative, inspiring a sense of contemplation and reflection among guests.

Culinary: Epicurean Odyssey of Global Cultures

Capella at Galaxy Macau’s key gastronomic concept is crafted in association with one of Hong Kong’s brightest culinary stars, Vicky Cheng. A Michelin-starred chef, Vicky Cheng is lauded for his culinary excellence in melding together French techniques with modern Chinese flavours. His restaurant is set to be the most anticipated opening in the region, where Macau’s fascinating East and West influences will allude to his culinary masterpieces. Chef Cheng is also the chef-founder of Vea and Wing, which is currently No.5 on Asia’s 50 Best Awards 2024.

Enriching the dining experience, the restaurant’s sublime design is by award-winning Hong Kong-based interior designer Joyce Wang, of the eponymous design shop Joyce Wang Studio. Wang illustrates a fluid space that resonates with Chef Cheng’s creativity. The notion of exploration and discovery is embedded into her design, where boundaries are meaningfully blurred between guest and chef, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in Chef Cheng’s intimate cooking ritual.

Culture: Where the Vibrant Pulse of Macau Begins

Capella at Galaxy Macau presents a bold new take on The Living Room, which is set to cement the property’s standing as Macau’s cultural hub. Alongside a series of enriching experiences designed to guide guests to navigate the innermost layers of Macau, Capella at Galaxy Macau will also feature Pony & Plume, a members-only al fresco lounge featuring the most extensive hotel humidor to store the Vintage Cuban collection of distinguished guests.

Inspired by the game of equestrian polo, Pony & Plume will feature a curated cocktail and the finest whiskies of provenance, underpinned by rare vintage Cuban puros. Meanwhile, a dedicated bar will serve storied cocktails in timeless elegance.

Capella at Galaxy Macau
Pony & Plume, a members-only al fresco lounge concept with the most extensive hotel humidor informed by a tightly held collection of the finest handpicked vintage Cubans of legendary provenance. Besides the insinuation of smoky flavours in Pony & Plume’s cocktail and food options, Plume is the ‘whisper-only’ name of a hidden invitation-only terrace, where a collection of the city’s best examples of Havana craftsmanship will be appreciated by serious aficionados. Aside from opportunities to taste special, rare and vintage selections by the stick, a feature display will allow you to peek at treasures from the owning family’s private collection - these include a range of vintage Cuban Dunhill and even the entire Davidoff Chateau series, as well as some historical unicorns. This will inevitably be Macau’s most sought after access, for connoisseur fans of the artisanal produce of Cuba and the New World. Curios from the private collection that those lucky enough to enter might get to spot also include antiques, art and even notable gifts blessed by El Commandante himself.

MELCO BECOMES WORLD’S FIRST INTEGRATED RESORT OPERATOR TO LAUNCH THE NORDAQ WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM ACROSS ITS GLOBAL RESORTS

NORDAQ water
Melco Resorts & Entertainment has become the world’s first hospitality group and integrated resort operator to launch the NORDAQ water purification and bottling solution across its global property portfolio, including at its properties in Macau, the Philippines and Cyprus.

With sustainability at the core of its development strategy, Melco’s objective, as stated in its sustainability strategy Rise to Go Above & Beyond, is to gradually replace single-use plastic (SUP) bottles with refillable glass bottles across all its operations. The initiative continued to gain traction throughout 2022, with NORDAQ installed across 43% of Melco’s hotel rooms and three restaurant outlets in Macau and Manila, eliminating a total of over 1.4 million SUP bottles at City of Dreams Manila and its Macau properties. Once fully operational across all Melco’s properties in Macau alone, an estimated 14.8 million plastic bottles will be eliminated yearly at normalized business volumes.

The NORDAQ system has also been launched at Melco latest integrated resort property, City of Dreams Mediterranean, which officially opened its doors to guests on July 10.

Mr. Lawrence Ho, Melco Chairman & CEO, said, "Action with positive engagement continues to be of key importance in our approach to sustainability. In our drive to be an adaptable and forward-thinking business, and to contribute to a climate-fit and equitable future, Melco remains a signatory to the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI), an initiative led by the UN Environment Programme and the World Tourism Organization in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. We have been developing and enhancing our 2025 roadmap to address the root causes of plastic pollution within our operations, and as part of this, we are glad to have rolled out the NORDAQ solution across our properties in both Asia and Europe. Through such initiatives, we hope to continue to inspire our guests by demonstrating that a sustainable future is a better future."

Ms. Johanna Mattsson, CEO of NORDAQ, said, "NORDAQ, is a sustainability company focusing on eliminating single used plastic. To transport water over water is one of the most illogical things we can do. We automatically shrink our own source and make it harder to get clean water. NORDAQ provides, in my opinion, the world's most innovative and effective water solution for superior taste and less waste. We are proud and very happy about this joint journey together with Melco which will be the world´s first integrated resort to launch NORDAQ water across its global resorts. Together we continue to embrace sustainable practices.”

Macau August GGR up 450pct on record July low

Macau casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) for August was up 450 percent sequentially from July’s recent-records low.

The August aggregate was just under MOP2.19 billion (US$270.8 million), but that was still down 50.7 percent from August 2021′s figure, according to data released on Thursday by the local regulator, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.

The latest result meant Macau’s average daily GGR during Aug 1 to 31 was MOP71 million, observed brokerage Sanford C. Bernstein Ltd in a Thursday note, adding this was “still lower than the May level” of MOP100 million-plus per day.

“The recovery is still constrained by travel restrictions and Covid outbreaks and lockdowns in [mainland] China, with customers remaining cautious to travel, in fear of government suddenly imposing lockdown orders,” added the memo from analysts Vitaly Umansky, Louis Li, and Shirley Yang.

Up to August 3 this year, outbound travel from Macau to Zhuhai, in the neighbouring mainland China province of Guangdong, had been subject to a quarantine-on-arrival in Zhuhai.

August’s sequential improvement in GGR coincided with an improvement in tourism numbers, following July’s poor showing, which had been affected by a 12-day shutdown of the casinos amid the worst community outbreak of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic in early 2020.

Last week the Macao Government Tourism Office said that the city had an aggregate of 103,162 tourist arrivals from August 20 to 26 inclusive; a daily average of 14,737.

The daily average was 18.0 percent up on the 12,485 daily tally for the seven days from August 13 to 19 inclusive.

In the eight months to August 31 this year, Macau’s cumulative casino GGR was nearly MOP28.86 billion, down by 53.4 percent in year-on-year terms.

China Reopens Border With Macau After Six Weeks as Cases Ebb

Macau
China will resume quarantine-free travel with Macau as the city recovers from its worst ever Covid-19 outbreak, in a move that could herald a tourism revival for casinos that have been bleeding cash for months.

Macau’s border with the neighboring Chinese city of Zhuhai will reopen from 6 p.m. Wednesday, with some conditions attached, according to statements from the governments in both cities. People entering Zhuhai from Macau will need to show a negative nucleic test result no older than 24 hours and inform community representatives in the location where they will stay of their travel history.

They’ll then need to take another test within 48 hours of traveling to the city and are banned from taking public transport or attending gatherings within the first three days of their arrival.

The lifting of the six-week border closure came after Macau eliminated community transmission, a key requirement for Chinese authorities. The gambling hub had maintained quarantine-free travel for inbound travelers from Zhuhai even during the peak of the outbreak that started mid-June and topped 1,800 cases.

The border reopening is a significant step in Macau’s emergence from an outbreak that sparked an unprecedented city-wide lockdown, multiple rounds of mass testing and an almost two-week shutdown of casinos. The revival of quarantine-free travel had been seen as key to recovery for the gaming industry -- which accounts for 80% of Macau’s government income and a third of local employment -- with a Bloomberg gauge of Macau’s six gaming operators jumping 3% after the announcement before paring gains to 1.3%.

While the easing of travel curbs paves the way for an increase in tourists, Macau’s casinos still face an uncertain outlook. The city’s reliance on China for the majority of visitors leaves it tied to the mainland’s Covid Zero strategy that deploys lockdowns and movement restrictions to curb outbreaks before they take hold.

That threatens to add to an extended downturn that’s seen the city lose its crown as the top gambling hub in the world. In 2019, Macau’s gaming revenue was six times the size of the Las Vegas Strip. But in the first six months of this year, it recorded $3.3 billion in gaming revenue, compared with $4 billion for Sin City.

A recovery in tourism is expected to be gradual, with gaming revenue in August estimated at 1.5 billion patacas ($185 million), or about 6% of the pre-pandemic level in 2019, Citigroup Inc. analysts led by George Choi wrote in a note Wednesday. That’s down 66% from a year earlier.

Macau’s six gaming operators are burning through millions of dollars of cash a day and are facing a liquidity crunch. The companies are expected to post a $500 million combined loss for the last quarter, their first since 2020, according to analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

As a result of the border closure, Macau’s average daily visitation plunged in July to less than 1,000, compared with more than 25,000 a year earlier. Gaming revenue fell to the lowest ever in July, and is 98% below pre-pandemic levels.

PATA: Recovery rates for Asia Pacific IVA growth varied and uneven to 2023

By the end of 2023, international visitor arrivals (IVAs) into and across the Asia Pacific region could return to 96% of the volume of foreign arrivals received in 2019, at least under a mild scenario. The less fortuitous medium and severe scenarios, however, could see those proportions reach just 74% and 49% respectively, at that time.

This is according to the full report of the Asia Pacific Visitor Forecasts 2021-2023 released today by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), where three growth prospects for international visitors into and across 39 Asia Pacific destinations are made, covering mild, medium and severe scenarios.

There is quite a disparity for each of the destination regions of Asia Pacific as well, with the Pacific for example, projected to exceed the 2019 volume of foreign arrivals into that region by a little over two percent in 2023.

Under the medium scenario, that proportion is expected to reach around 78% while under the severe scenario it is likely to remain at just 52% of the 2019 volume.

The Americas is in a somewhat similar situation, however, as the 2023 proportion of IVAs relative to that of 2019 is still expected to fall short under the mild scenario although only by a minimal margin.

The medium and severe scenarios present a similar reduction in the proportions of IVAs in 2023 relative to 2019, to those of the Pacific.

Asia, known as a powerhouse for international arrivals into and across the Asia Pacific region will experience similar figures to what is expected for the Americas under the mild scenario. However, the medium and severe scenarios could fall back even further. In the latter scenario for example, the report projects that IVAs into and across Asia Pacific could fall back to less than half of the 2019 volume by 2023.

Of immediate concern, for all of the Asia Pacific destination sub-regions under each of the scenarios, 2021 is likely to be another difficult year for international travel movements. Any growth is likely to be extremely uneven, and for some sub-regions may be further below the levels of 2019 and even those of 2020.

South Asia in particular, under this mild scenario, is expected to lose even more IVAs with its relative proportion to 2019, falling to around 14% in 2021, before rebounding strongly in 2022 and 2023.

Under the medium scenario, more destination sub-regions are expected to fall into further decline in 2021 relative to 2019, before turning to some tentative recovery in 2022 and 2023.

Furthermore, 2021 is anticipated to be remarkably challenging under the severe scenario.

At the destination level, the top five Asia Pacific markets by volume of IVAs received do not change much in order of importance and hold relatively steady positions under each of the scenarios. While there are some rank order changes, these are minimal. In addition, under each scenario, the top five destinations routinely account for more than half of the total IVAs into the region.

Of interest is the finding that China fell from its position of dominance in 2020, but is expected to regain this position from 2021 onwards. Under the severe scenario, this takes a little longer with China returning to the first position in 2022. Similarly, Hong Kong SAR, which after falling to the 12th position in the rankings in 2020, is nevertheless expected to return to third place by 2023, irrespective of the scenario.

In addition, this group of the top five destinations becomes more significant in relative terms, in 2021 at least, as the scenarios change from mild to medium and then to severe.

Over the years to 2023 however, this group tends to return to almost pre-COVID-19 relative shares.

Over the longer period, the top five source region and destination pairs by volume increase between 2020 and 2023, are expected to remain in the same rank order under all three of the scenarios although the increase in the absolute number of foreign arrivals obviously changes.

The top five group increases in relative importance as the scenarios change, moving from almost 48% of the total IVA increase under the mild scenario to 49% under the medium and 52% under the severe scenario.

PATA CEO Dr Mario Hardy stated, “Calendar year 2021 is likely to be difficult for most destinations, with almost 40% of the 39 destinations covered in these forecasts falling even further from the low point of arrival numbers in 2020, even under the mild scenario. In the case of the medium scenario, that proportion is likely to increase to 85% while under the severe scenario it could well be the case for all 39 destinations.”

“Clearly, a further round of belt-tightening will be needed in the international sector, with more innovation being required in developing what is available in the domestic sector,” he added.

Dr Hardy concluded by reminding the travel sector that, “Vaccines are becoming more freely available and inoculations are proceeding rapidly, but even so, and while first results are very encouraging, their effectiveness over a wider proportion of the population has yet to be fully demonstrated. It is very likely that travellers in the future will have to carry proof of inoculation and being COVID-19 free, something that various agencies and airlines have been developing and is already trialling. Whatever the outcome, travel will never be the same again and we have no choice but to adjust and adapt to that.”

The Forecast Full Report is now available on the PATA website at.

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) today announced the winners of the PATA Gold Awards 2020. Proudly supported and sponsored by the Macao Government Tourist Office (MGTO) for the last 25 years, this year's awards recognise the achievements of 23 organisations and individuals.

PATA presented 20 Gold Awards to such organisations as Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts; Department of Tourism, Government of Karnataka; Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA); Kazakh Tourism National Company JSC; Macao Government Tourism Office; Mekong River Tourism; Outrigger Hospitality Group; Sampan Travel; SriLankan Airlines Ltd.; Taylor's University; Tourism Authority of Thailand, and TTG Asia Media Pte Ltd.

The winners were announced during the Online PATA Gold Awards Presentation as part of Virtual PATA Travel Mart 2020, taking place from September 23-27.

Ms Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of MGTO, said, “I commend all PATA Gold Awards participants for keeping alive the spirit of innovation, helping to raise the bar across all sectors of the industry. As we look forward to restarting tourism in the ‘new normal’, more than ever we will have to come up with solutions ‘outside the box’ to ensure that tourism is not only safe, but also seamless and appealing. Macao is honored for its long-standing support to PATA in this inspiring initiative, on our way to transform the city into a world centre of tourism and leisure.”

PATA CEO Dr. Mario Hardy added, “On behalf of PATA, I would like to extend our warmest congratulations to all PATA Gold Award winners and Grand Title winners, and I would also like to thank all of this year’s participants. The achievements of this year’s winners will hopefully inspire and encourage our industry to create new responsible and sustainable initiatives as we look towards recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the first year that we announced the winners live and it was an absolute pleasure to celebrate their accomplishments during the Online PATA Gold Awards Presentation.”

The PATA Grand Title Winners were presented to outstanding entries in three principal categories: Marketing, Sustainability, and Human Capital Development.

Kerala Tourism, India received the PATA Gold Award 2020 Grand Title Winner in Marketing for Education and Training for its “Human by Nature Print Campaign”. In August 2018, unprecedented heavy Monsoon rain devastated Kerala. The ordinary people of Kerala, the fishermen, students, working professionals, and villagers emerged as the Heroes of the Flood. The campaign is drawn from the everyday life of people in the five diverse terrains of Kerala and explores the fascinating ‘humanscape’ of the land. The idea emerged from travellers who began to perceive ‘human’ encounters in Kerala as a unique, enriching experience. Moreover, the campaign which promotes ordinary people as brand ambassadors of the land is built on the idea of a common humanity that connects the travellers with Keralites and the fact that everyday life in its reality is one of the most exceptional experiences that Kerala offers.

The Grand Title Winner in Sustainability was presented to YAANA Ventures, Thailand, for the Anurak Community Lodge. Anurak Community Lodge in Surat Thani province, southern Thailand, is a Travelife Gold certified eco-lodge for active lifestyle visitors who respect nature and local community traditions. Surrounded by spectacular limestone karst scenery, the lodge is an ideal base to explore adjacent Khao Sok National Park and majestic Chiew Larn Lake. Anurak’s operation since opening in 2016 has been guided by an ethos of reduce, reuse and recycle. Guests and staff are encouraged to save energy and water. Single-use plastic, Styrofoam and cardboard plates are banned. Plastic straws have been replaced with bamboo and metal ones. An onsite recycling station has been set up, along with a composting area. A grey water treatment filter system for laundry wastewater is in place. Water from that system is being used on the Rainforest Rising project, Anurak’s project to return two rai (3,226 sqm; 0.8 acres) of former palm oil plantation beside the lodge to indigenous lowland evergreen forest by 2023.

The Grand Title Winner in Human Capital Development was bestowed to MGM China, Macao, China for its “Unleashing Greatness – MGM’s Human Capital Development Initiative”. Guided by MGM’s vision of “Unleashing Greatness for all”, they aim to unleash the greatness of their constituents through sustainable development of its employees, communities and responsible tourism. They build a sustainable world-class hospitality workforce with a strong learning culture that engages employees and lifelong learning. Their best-in-class 74 training hours per head per year validates our commitment and achievement in this endeavor. MGM practices responsible citizenships to ensure localization of staff and the sustainable development of its extended communities. Their initiatives include scholarships for local students, internship opportunities, community outreach program, youth leadership development, etc. One example is its pioneering free online sign language lessons to the community in Macao, China.

Open to both PATA and non-PATA members, this year's Awards attracted a total of 121 entries from 62 travel and tourism organisations and individuals.
