Action-packed experiences in Sydney to channel your inner stunt person

The Fall Guy
Action-comedy film The Fall Guy exploded onto Australian screens in April, and along with Hollywood superstars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, Sydney also plays a starring role. But the city isn't just a backdrop to many of the action-packed scenes in the film, it also offers real-life action experiences to get your heart pumping. Here's our guide to high-octane experiences in Sydney.

On-the-water adrenaline

Just like Ryan Gosling blasting around Sydney Harbour in a high-speed boat chase, you too can feel the wind in your hair, the sea spray on your face and your heart in your mouth on an Oz Jet Boating experience. Find your need for speed

It's not an action movie without a car chase, and while you can't speed through the CBD streets like Ryan Gosling and Jean Claude, you can still challenge your friends to race via go kart at Hyper Karting Moore Park. At the 410-metre indoor track, the electric cars offer plenty of exhilarating straights and corners, with a high-speed function to help you overtake your mates. True petrol heads should make a pitstop at Luddenham Raceway in southwest Sydney, where the go karts are fuelled and the 600m outdoor pro circuit offers 12 high-speed corners and even nighttime drives. Have an adventure up high

A high-stakes, sky-high chopper scene is an action flick essential; recreate the experience (minus the stress) on a flight with Sydney HeliTours. Climb Fit in St Leonards has beginner and high-tech climbs using augmented reality, while Ledge is a smaller centre in Camperdown perfect for beginners, and BlocHaus in Marrickville focuses solely on bouldering. If you prefer to climb surrounded by waterfalls and forests, make the extra leap to the Blue Mountains, and challenge yourself on an abseil or rock-climb under the expert guidance of the Blue Mountains Adventure Company.

Spots to refuel

After all that adventuring, you're going to need a spot to refuel and cheers to a big day. Make it a meal with a view at Aster Bar on top of the InterContinental Sydney – with uninterrupted views of the harbour. The rooftop bar featured in the film is the Ivy – which is a local favourite for big nights out. Partake in Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt's love for spicy margaritas at Centro 86, a new underground tequila bar in the CBD, or taste award-winning cocktails at Dean and Nancy on 22. Finish up with a feast at one of the restaurants located around Jones Bay Wharf (you'll spot this area in the film as Ryan Gosling hides on his boat from the bad guys) or snack in the late-night dining havens in Chinatown: try Japanese izakaya Nakano Darling, xiao long bao from Nanjing Dumpling or Mamak's legendary roti.

Rest your head

Hit the highway and leave the city crowds behind as you head inland to Death Valley National Park. Stop to stretch your legs, refuel and have lunch in Ridgecrest, a military town and recreation area that has set the stage for many feature films such as Top Gun: Maverick. Continue to Death Valley, the largest national park in the contiguous United States at 3.73 million acres (13,848.44 km2). Death Valley is defined by extremes. Either way, you'll travel a portion of historic Route 66 to arrive in Amboy, home to the midcentury relic, Roy's Motel & Café. The town of Joshua Tree will be one hour's drive from Amboy, descending into Wonder Valley. Have dinner at The Cooper Room in Yucca, a buzzy spot with vintage vibes on an airstrip.

Borrego Springs

Vietnam's tourism hot spot becomes foreign investment hub

With its emerald green ocean and moss-covered islets, the world heritage site of Halong Bay in northern Vietnam is one of the country's most popular destinations, attracting tourists from around the world. In 2023, it welcomed about 2.6 million foreign visitors, accounting for 21% of Vietnam's total inbound tourists.

However, the province where Halong Bay is located has another face. Quang Ninh has recently become Vietnam's largest recipient of foreign direct investment, overtaking Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other economic hot spots, thanks to global supply chain diversification and a new port in a nearby city.

According to data from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, Quang Ninh last year topped other provinces and the country's five biggest cities, receiving $3.1 billion of FDI. Thai Binh province was the second-hottest destination, attracting $2.68 billion, followed by Bac Giang province at $1.53 billion.

Quang Ninh province was expected to welcome another $1 billion in the first quarter of 2024 and will likely surpass $3 billion for a second consecutive year.

The province, which shares land and sea borders with China, began attracting attention as the U.S.-China trade war accelerated. Due to its proximity to China and its 250 kilometers of coast, the province is considered one of the best locations for companies moving production out of China. These factors keep China's existing supply chains in play and make it easy to ship products.

In addition, the number of LNG and wind power plants in the province has increased recently. This reflects a big energy shift as Quang Ninh holds rich mineral resources, including more than 90% of Vietnam's coal reserves. Industries like solar photovoltaic cell technology, electronic equipment and petrochemicals are also expanding in the province.

Jinko Solar PV Vietnam's photovoltaic cell technology project might be the largest and most symbolic of these projects. With total registered capital of over 34.65 trillion dong ($1.5 billion), it is funded by a Chinese company.

The top three provinces in the 2023 FDI ranking were all around Haiphong. One of Vietnam's five biggest cities, Haiphong itself finished fourth in the ranking, attracting $1.48 billion.

The opening of Lach Huyen International Port in 2018 in Haiphong has given rise to the city and surrounding areas. The first large-scale port in the north has a water depth of 14 meters. Before it opened, the region had only a shallow port that almost no large container ship could enter.

Expressway 04, which connects to Hanoi, opened at the same time. Also, the opening in 2022 of Expressway 06, to the city of Mong Cai, near the Chinese border, was a significant tailwind for Quang Ninh Province.

Another boon to the city has been Vingroup, Vietnam's largest conglomerate, which reportedly is close to the authorities and has received preferential treatment. It has built a VinFast electric vehicle factory in Haiphong.

Until a few years ago, Vietnam's investment hubs were Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the two biggest cities. However, labor costs and industrial park prices in recent years have soared.

According to Sufex Trading, a Japanese company that helps Japanese companies enter Vietnam, Hanoi industrial parks charge tenants $100 to $170 per square meter, up from $90 to $120 around 2019. Prices in Ho Chi Minh City range from $160 to $270, up from $130 to $160.

Rents at Quang Ninh province parks, meanwhile, range from $80 to $100, compared to $60 to $70 before the pandemic.

Personnel costs are also lower outside the big metropolises. According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the average monthly salary in Hanoi in 2022 was 8.86 million dong ($385). In Ho Chi Minh City it was 9.1 million dong, but in Quang Ninh province, it was 7.03 million dong.

"The area around Haiphong will continue to be popular among foreign companies," said Hirokazu Tsuchiya, General Manager Japan of DEEP C, a vast industrial park spanning Haiphong and Quang Ninh, where Pegatron and Apple supplier USI have their factories, pointing out that land prices and labor costs are soaring in Haiphong. "Surrounding provinces such as Quang Ninh and Thai Binh are cheaper, and the convenience is almost as good as Haiphong," he said.

The strategic importance of Quang Ninh province is also evident in its railway development plans. The Ministry of Planning and Investment of Vietnam on Tuesday said work on two high-speed railway lines linking Hanoi with China will start before 2030. The trains are expected to stop in Haiphong and Quang Ninh.

Although the number of companies that hope to enter Quang Ninh province is likely to increase, there are concerns.

One is heavier investments. According to a few companies that have already entered Quang Ninh, the minimum investment amount per hectare has been raised to $8 million from $5 million, which they say reflects local authorities' desire to invite larger companies. Another is the cost of labor. More Chinese and South Korean companies are raising their salary offers to attract talent.

Founded in 1980, it’s one of the oldest family Indian restaurants in Los Angeles, boasting a loyal army of regulars doubtless encouraged by a charming habit of giving out discount coupons for your next visit. The quietly exotic elegance of Anarkali’s pillared facia is continued in a dining room that’s a lesson in the atmospheric use of a small space. Chef Sujan’s progressive “new Indian” menu is a celebration of regional traditions infused with Cali accents through the use of local produce and splashes of LA attitude. Freewheeling restaurateurs Nakul Mahendro, brother Arjun, and their head chef father Pawan opened Badmaash in Downtown LA’s Historic Core in 2013. A Hollywood location, on Fairfax Avenue, followed five years later. Badmaash’s contemporary Indian decor features marble counters, bright walls and banquettes, and an upstairs mezzanine with a mural of “hipster Gandhi” amidst framed Bollywood art. Their menu is similarly progressive, touting local, organic, and sustainable ingredients. Even the pickles are colorful and market-driven, including cauliflower, mushrooms, onion, jicama, and carrot, while Badmaash’s Punjabi Fish and Chips may make you forget the better-known British version of this time-honored combo. While their motto is “eat like you’re Indian,” the Mahendros also stray from tradition with dishes like chili cheese naan, and chicken tikka and channa masala poutines inspired by self-described “drunken spring breaks in Montreal.”

Originally a catering service, Bhanu was opened as a grocery store and café by a brother and sister in a San Gabriel strip mall in 2011. Shelves bulge with ingredients like prized Kesar mangoes, sumac, and cashew cookies. This true mom-and-pop has also squeezed in a dining area with orange, art-lined walls, and flatscreen TVs streaming Bollywood content. Spice-level choices include everything from no spice to (for an additional charge) ghost pepper and Carolina reaper. Mercifully, you can also dial the heat way down for much of Bhanu’s vast menu, which includes oodles of veggie options like eggplant curry, creamy dal makhani, and kadhi pakoda (vegetable pakoras in a yogurt-based curry). The thali combo meals resemble exotic TV dinners, but taste indescribably better, with a choice of main and sides; rice, naan or rotie; and yoghurt. In short, Bhanu’s is a one-stop shop for exquisite Indian fare.

Egypt showcases prominent tourism projects

Egypt showcased its commitment to enhancing the tourist experience and attracting new visitors from the UAE, GCC, and globally by highlighting the country’s tourism potential, forthcoming projects, and future initiatives at Arabian Travel Market 2024 (ATM) in Dubai as it looks to build on the record 15 million tourists welcomed in 2023.

Dr. Ghada Shalaby, Egypt’s Vice Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Tourism Affairs, said: “Egypt is gearing up to attract a wide range of travelers based on its commitment to diversifying its tourism offerings. The Ministry has worked to unveil a group of new products that meet the evolving preferences of travellers, from health tourism to meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions tourism, all the way to the innovative Umrah Plus product and the attractive Cairo City Break program.”

Dr. Ghada noted that cooperation lies at the heart of Egypt's tourism strategy. By strengthening partnerships between tourism entities in Egypt, the Far East, and GGC countries, among other Arab countries, the Ministry aims to combine efforts in promoting Egyptian destinations and ensuring unparalleled experiences for visitors. Through collaborative endeavours, the tourism sector is ready to flourish and grow.

“Egypt’s commitment to infrastructure development remains steadfast. From enhancing transportation networks to enhancing airport facilities and expanding railway systems, significant investments are being made to improve accessibility and connectivity across the country. These initiatives play an essential role in facilitating smooth travel experiences for visitors to Egypt, said Dr Ghada

Amr El-Kady, CEO, Egyptian Tourism Authority, mentioned that Egypt is witnessing a qualitative shift in its approach to tourism, as by embracing the dynamism of the private sector, the country is embarking on a journey of liberation and promoting an enabling environment for investment and innovation in the travel sector. From this standpoint, the Arabian Travel Market, held in Dubai, constitutes an essential platform to complete these efforts and raise its status at this level.”

Mr. Al-Kady pointed out that the Egyptian Tourism Authority is taking advanced steps to enhance customer experience at archaeological sites. A prime example of this is the opening of the new visitor centre, planned as part of the upcoming transformation of the Giza Pyramids in a few weeks.

Egypt's tourism sector continues to chart a path of growth and resilience. After a record-breaking year in 2023, with 15 million visitors flocking to its shores, compared to 4.9 million in 2021, further expansion is expected in 2024. With a firm focus on enhancing visitor experiences, strengthening partnerships, and investing in infrastructure, Egypt is well-positioned to keep its economy on an upward trajectory in the tourism landscape.

The newly launched Cairo City Break program will reshape the capital's appeal by promoting Cairo as a long weekend destination. Egypt presents the emerging destination of Ras El Hekma – a relaxing haven located along the picturesque Egyptian coastline with ancient monuments and cultural attractions. Eco-friendly Hop-on Hop-off buses will be launched, enhancing the accessibility and sustainability of the tourism experience. A new road will be opened later this year to reduce the journey time from Luxor to Hurghada from 5.5 to 4 hours.

A new reform of the tourism industry has been introduced, which includes steps towards deregulation and liberalisation. Egypt has allocated a staggering 22% of its GDP over the past seven years to comprehensive infrastructure development. The state aims to double the capacity of hotel rooms in the country, which will increase from 220 to 245 room nights during the next five years.

Thailand extends visa exemption for Russian tourists until July 31

The Thai cabinet has approved a temporary visa exemption for visitors from Russia not exceeding 60 days, effective from 1 May 2024 to 31 July 2024. 

The current visa-exemption scheme for Russia has been in effect since 1 November 2023 and will be valid until 30 April 2024. 

The visa-free policy for Russian tourists was extended because they are increasingly traveling to Thailand.

According to the statistics, over 1.61 million Russian tourists visited Thailand in 2023, which is considered the fifth-highest number of tourists, generating revenue for the country of more than 8.4 billion baht. (PRD) *Pattaya Mail

FUGETSU-DO: THE STORY OF AN LOS ANGELES ICON

Tucked amongst the shops and restaurants lining 1st Street in Little Tokyo, the storefront that is home to Fugetsu-Do has remained largely unchanged since it was remodeled back in 1956. It’s small, with wood shelves stocked with snack foods, as well as a display case and drawers filled with the shop’s signature treat, mochi. Stop by on a weekend and you might see a line of customers extending out onto the sidewalk waiting for their chance to indulge in the beloved Japanese confection.

Founded in 1903, Fugetsu-Do is the largest producer of traditional New Year’s mochi in the United States - a task that keeps the family-owned shop running 24 hours during the last few days of the year. While it’s a store steeped in history, Fugetsu-Do has also popularized contemporary takes on its staple item, like Peanut Butter Mochi, Korey's Chocolate Mochi with a ganache center, and the snack-sized Rainbow Dango.

Fugetsu-Do has been doing record business since celebrating its 120th anniversary. “When COVID hit, we took off,” says Brian Kito, the third-generation master wagashi confectioner at the helm of Fugetsu-Do. “We’re comfort food.”

Mochi is associated with a few different holidays — Girl’s Day, Children’s Day and the Tanabata Festival among them, Kito notes — but the greatest demand for the traditional confection made from glutinous rice is around New Year’s Day, when it’s eaten in a soup called ozoni. New Year’s mochi is typically made by a large group of people who work together as they pound the rice, an event called mochitsuki.

Kito surmises that a form of mochitsuki happens when the "Mochi Madness" team of volunteers come together in the last few days of the year to help him fill orders. "It’s about teamwork," he says. "You end the year working as a team for the mochi for New Year’s Day."

Kito has spent much of his life at Fugetsu-Do. “My Christmas vacation was always at the store, even going back to when I was five years old,” he says. While still a junior high student, he ran a soda fountain inside the shop during the summer. (The mid-20th century soda fountain is still there, although it’s no longer operational.) He spent his teen years helping out with the New Year’s rush. During college, he juggled classes with six days of work at the shop. In 1986, a handful of years after he graduated college, Kito took over Fugetsu-Do from his father, Roy.

Kito’s tenure at the mochi shop founded by his grandfather, Seiichi, hasn’t been easy. He notes that business slowed in the late 1980s as fewer people headed to Little Tokyo. Around the time of Fugetsu-Do’s 90th anniversary, Kito almost gave up on the business, but he had told his father that he would stick it out until the store’s centennial. “When I got to the 100th anniversary, I realized that I was so entrenched in the community here, that there was really no leaving,” Kito says.

Fugetsu-Do’s 100th anniversary also marked the start of an era of confectionary experimentation. One of the shop’s most popular items, Peanut Butter Mochi, came out of this period. Its chewy, lightly strawberry flavored mochi exterior and peanut butter center was intended to evoke memories of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. A few years later, Fugetsu-Do introduced the equally delightful Korey’s Chocolate Mochi, named for Kito’s son.

The shop also offers packages of bite-sized mochi meant for snacking. The Rainbow Dango attracts a lot of customers with its multicolored stripes. Kito says that originally this treat was a red and white striped mochi that was a longtime Fugetsu-Do item, but when sales went down he gave it a facelift. "We started making them in little dango sizes with multiple colors," he says. "The minute we started making that, it took off again."

Part of the reasoning behind this, he says, was to appeal to a younger clientele, noting that there had been a period of time, particularly in the 1990s, when fewer Japanese American kids were coming to Little Tokyo. "I had to appeal to a generation of Japanese Americans who didn’t really have a lot of experience in Little Tokyo or with my product," he says.

Kito adds, "The reason I say that is that Japanese Americans are my fundamental market. Anything on top of that is the icing on the cake. But, the economy of Little Tokyo is always dependent on Japanese Americans to take ownership of this area."

Fugetsu-Do also has a line of "artisan" mochi that includes Strawberry Anko topped with hazelnut chocolate ganache; Green Tea, and Blueberry Anko - blueberries are cooked with white bean paste to produce a subtly sweet flavor.

Kito notęs that, in the past few years, retail business has increased not only for Fugetsu-Do, but for the neighborhood in general. "When COVID hit, Little Tokyo became more important for Japanese Americans to support and they came out," he says. "I think they thought they were going to lose Little Tokyo. It’s a reflection of our culture."

There’s a key to Fugetsu-Do’s longevity. "The community feels it's theirs," he says of the shop. "It's not just my store, it's the community store."

"We have people who are grandparents now that remember coming to the store as children with their grandparents," Kito adds. "That connection to those days as a child of coming with your grandfather, grandmother - it stays forever."
