Shimogamo Shrine: One of Kyoto’s Oldest Shrines

Maidono Hall
Ask anyone where to go for the “really old stuff” in Japan, and they’ll probably mention Kyoto.

Serving as the capital for over 1,000 years, it’s the birthplace of many traditional art forms and aspects of Japanese culture we see today. And, as it was spared World War 2 bombing, you’ll be able to find plenty of physical remnants of the past, too.

If you’re looking for a place with a long history, which also happens to be serene and beautiful, you really can’t go past Shimogamo Shrine.

Shimogamo Jinja dates back to the sixth century, long before Kyoto became the capital in 794, making it one of the oldest shrines in town. In fact, on-site excavations have identified evidence of life and architecture dating back to the year 2 BC! Once upon a time, it was joined with nearby Kamigamo Shrine as one site, but they have since gone their separate ways. (Don’t worry, they’re still great friends!) When you factor in this historical significance, it’s no surprise that Shimogamo shrine gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 1994.

Located in the fork of the Kamo and Takano Rivers and surrounded by lush forest, Shimogamo Jinja is a true urban sanctuary. Its nearest station is Demachiyanagi, which is a key access point to the mountain towns of Kibune and Kurama. Because of this, it’s a great idea to pair a your visit with a trip into the hills of Kyoto.

Getting there is half the fun
Hop a train to Demachiyanagi station, then cross the river and turn right. Follow the charming residential street through a series of torii gates. It steadily grows greener and more landscaped; before long you’ll find yourself in the lush sanctuary of the Tadasu no Mori forest.

This humongous parkland is chock full of old and twisted trees, some of which date back 600 years. The farther you walk, the more secluded things become, and the city noises melt away. Meditate on the sound of gravel underfoot and get into your zen space—or whatever the shinto equivalent is

The lush canopy is a lovely reprieve from the summer heat. It’s not a long walk (10 minutes from the station), but if you need a rest or refreshment, you can do so at the teahouse. Serving tea and traditional sweets, it’s the perfect place to sit and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere a little longer.

Shimogamo Shrine Features
As it’s a shinto shrine, you’ll see a number of red torii gates as you make your way along the entrance path. These symbolise the transition from the ordinary world into the sacred—try to walk through thinking about that without shivering.

The iconic two-storied rōmon gate at Shimogamo
Shrine, one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto
Soon you’ll arrive at the iconic two storied rōmon gate (meaning tower gate). This type of gate is commonly seen in Buddhist architecture, but has found a second home in Shinto design. This one, along with many other structures on-site, is a National treasure.

Pass through into a large gravel clearing; straight ahead you’ll see the the Maidono Hall, now used for traditional dances during festivals.

Zodiac Shrines
Keep an eye out for seven small shrines clustered together. At first I thought these were something to do with pets and livestock. But when I pictured someone with a pet tiger, I realised they were more likely Chinese zodiac signs. Namely, Rat (ね), Ox (うし), Tiger (とら), Rabbit (う), Dragon (たつ), Snake (み), Horse (うま), Sheep (ひつじ), Monkey (さる), Rooster (とり), Dog (いぬ) and Boar (い).

If you know your sign, try to match the hiragana characters to the white signposts so you’ll know where to pray.

Taikobashi Bridge
Taikobashi Bridge

Keep an eye out for the taikobashi (aka soribashi) bridge. Literally translating to ‘drum bridge’, it’s thought that the dramatic arch design resembles the shape of a taiko drum. You can find these bridges all over Japan, so keep an eye out in your travels.

Events at Shimogamo Shrine
Aside from the Mitarashi Festival, there are a number of other interesting events held at Shimogamo Shrine. The 3rd of May is the annual horseback archery competition, while May 15th is Aoi Matsuri—one of Kyoto’s most exciting events. For this, a collection of locals get into full traditional garb and parade from the Imperial Palace to Shimogamo Shrine and onto Kamigamo Shrine. It’s a historical reenactment that you’ll have to see to believe.

One other great thing about Shimogamo Shrine is that it opens early (5:30 or 6:30a.m., depending on the time of year). This makes it a great activity to schedule at the beginning of your day, before everything else opens.

No matter what time you’re thinking of going, I implore you to experience this important cultural property. See more nearby attractions here.

Ha Long Bay & Cu Chi Tunnels - The “epic” adventurous places in Southeast Asia

Ha Long Bay and Cu Chi Tunnels, Vietnam are ranked 9th and 8th respectively out of 10 ideal places in Southeast Asia for travellers who love adventure travelling and exploring historical sites, voted by The Travel magazine.

Recently, a Canadian magazine, The Travel just revealed its list of 10 epic & adventurous places in Southeast Asia that travellers must visit and Vietnam are not only named 1 but 2 destinations in this list.

According to The Travel, Southeast Asia is a region of countries that possesses a rich tapestry of distinct cultures and faiths. Many travel lovers consider it to be a favourite part of the globe to travel because of its beautiful beaches, delectable cuisine and various heroic historical relics. This tropical destination will give travellers an abundance of interesting and exciting experiences, from hiking through hot rainforests to snorkelling in the world’s most spectacular coastal areas.

To many travellers, Ha Long Bay has become an acquaintance on the tourist map of the world. Ha Long Bay, located in the Gulf of Tonkin, within Quang Ninh Province, in the northeast of Vietnam, is165 km from the capital of Ha Noi. Covering an area of over 1,500 square kilometres and including 1,969 islands and islets, most of which are uninhabited and unaffected by humans, it forms a spectacular seascape of limestone pillars and is an ideal model of a mature Karst landscape developed during a warm and wet tropical climate. Coming to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, travellers may enjoy the region by diving and snorkelling, renting a canoe, or perhaps simply relaxing on the upper deck of the boat tour with a beverage in hand, stated by The Travel.

If Ha Long Bay gives travellers a trip with a strong northern vibe, the Cu Chi Tunnels will bring a completely different and equally adventurous experience of the South of Vietnam. Located about 70km from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City to the northwest, is a vast network of subterranean tunnels. Cu Chi Tunnels is considered as an unique war-fighting wonder with about 250km of tunnels spreading like spider webs in the ground. Travellers will get to know about real events that happened in this tunnel, the story of the wars from the ground between Vietnamese soldiers, compatriots and invaders during period 1945 - 1975.

Furry frequent flyers: How to safely travel with pets over Easter

Four long days off, perfect autumn weather and an abundance of parks, reserves,
campsites and dog friendly accommodation options; there really is no better time than
Easter to escape for a mini getaway with your pet.

According to the latest report from Animal Medicines Australia , the pet holiday market is
booming with 25% of all pet owners revealing that they take their animal companions on
holidays or road trips, including 35% of dog owners.

Whether you’re road tripping or flying, camping or staying in accommodation with your
pet over Easter, PETstock PETschool State Trainer Mandi Wright has compiled her top
tips to ensure your getaway is a success.

Road tripping with pets
When travelling in the car with your pet, check your local state laws for pet restraint
requirements. If it’s not required by law, restraining your pet in the car enhances safety
for your pet and other passengers.

Making sure your buddy is secure by travelling with a drive harness and anchor, pet
carrier or cargo barrier installed will ensure you and your pet’s safety during transit.

Pets can’t distract you with the typical ‘are we there yet?’ questions, but there are other
signs your pet can give you to let you know when they’re feeling uncomfortable or bored.

Regular pit stops with rest areas to stretch legs and toilet breaks should be mapped out
in advance.

Flying with pets
If you’re jet-setting with your furry friend this Easter, it’s essential to take the necessary
precautions to guarantee their flying experience goes as smoothly as possible.
To ensure your pet is flight-ready, take your pet to the vet for a check-up. The vet will
assess your pet’s health and make sure their vaccinations, worming and flea and tick
treatments are up-to-date.

If you have a particularly anxious or hyperactive dog and you’re nervous about travelling
with them, it’s also a good idea to ask your vet for something to help them feel calm.
On the day of your flight, go for a walk or play with your pet before heading off to the
airport to tire them out. Make sure you pack their leash, any comfort items, toys, food,
and medication that they may need for the trip.

Pet-friendly accommodation
Many travellers cannot bear the thought of a holiday without their furry friend. Luckily, pet friendly travel and accommodation options are on the rise, with more than 12,000 pet-friendly listings on accommodation platform AirBnB .

If you’re planning to stay in a pet-friendly holiday home, it’s important to ensure your pet is comfortable and calm in their new surroundings.

When dogs and cats move away from their usual environment, they feel as though they are separated from their ‘space’ or ‘territory’ and can become anxious. This anxiety can be characterised with signs of distress including destruction to the home, pacing, excessive barking, digging, or even attempting to escape.

In saying that, it's a good idea to allow your pet to reorient themselves and explore their new surroundings when you first arrive at your accommodation.

Be sure to bring along your dog’s regular bedding, water bowl, leash, treats, toys, and any other necessary equipment. Also, dogs thrive on routine, so keep to your pet's regular schedule as much as possible.

Campsite safety Before you venture out, make sure your campsite is dog-friendly, and schedule a vet appointment to confirm your buddy is up to date with vaccinations and worming.

To ensure that your dog has a safe and comfortable holiday, pack and prepare for the unexpected with extra food, medication and emergency supplies.

As dogs are not allowed to be off leash at most campsites, it’s also best to take a ground stake and extra-long lead so they can roam freely as possible.

Snakes are common in Australia and can make your pet dangerously ill.

Do not let your dog explore holes, high grass and rocks around the campsite where snakes like to rest. Symptoms of a snake bite include lethargy, drooling, wobbliness and vomiting.

If you suspect your dog may have been bitten by a snake, seek veterinary attention immediately

THE NEW ACADEMY MUSEUM OF MOTION PICTURES: 10 THINGS YOU CAN'T MISS

Photo by Joshua White, Courtesy of the Academy
Museum of Motion Pictures
As America’s largest institution devoted to the art and science of moviemaking, there’s always something to see at the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Its enthralling exhibitions and experiences turn the dream factory inside out, delving deep beyond the screen to reveal the diverse stories of the creative people and processes behind the films we love.

With the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ collection of more than 13 million objects to draw upon, plus temporary exhibitions, two state-of-the-art theaters, special events, and an ever-changing calendar of programs and screenings, the 300,000-square-foot museum merits regular repeat visits.

We looked at 10 things not to miss on your first time.

1. ARCHITECTURE
The architecture of the Academy Museum alone justifies a visit. Its striking exterior by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano suggests something extremely special within. The museum occupies the 250,000-square-foot former May Company department store, a historic Streamline Moderne structure at the intersection of Wilshire Blvd. and Fairfax Ave. Dedicated as the Saban Building following a $50 million donation from philanthropists Cheryl and Haim Saban, its restoration included one third of the 350,000 gold-leaf mosaic tiles on its distinctive gold cylinder being meticulously replaced by their original Italian manufacturer. Piano also added the otherworldly Sphere. Overlaid with 1,500 multi-shaped glass shingles, this soaring structure houses the David Geffen Theater and the glass-domed Dolby Family Terrace, with views from the Hollywood Sign to the Getty Center.

2. COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS
The Academy Museum draws upon not only its own incredible collection of film-related objects and technology, but also the unparalleled accumulation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, including literally millions of costumes, film reels, posters, props, production design drawing, screenplays and more. Get up close with evocative pieces of movie history like the menacing extraterrestrial headpiece worn in 1979’s “Alien”; Dorothy’s ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz”; the last surviving full-scale shark model from “Jaws”; an annotated page from Gregory Peck’s script for controversial 1962 classic “To Kill a Mockingbird”; and the typewriter used by screenwriter Joseph Stefano for Alfred Hitchcock’s genre-shaping horror thriller “Psycho.”

3. STORIES OF CINEMA EXHIBITION
Photo by Joshua White, Courtesy of the
Academy Museum of Motion Pictures
The multi-floor “Stories of Cinema” is the Academy Museum’s ever-evolving core exhibition exploring narrative movies, documentaries, animation, and the multifarious arts and sciences behind them. It begins in the Grand Lobby of the Saban Building, where a towering glass-walled gallery and multiscreen experience serve as a free introduction. The second floor currently showcases the works and influences of Spike Lee; the history of the Academy Awards; the role and reflection of social issues in filmmaking; and, as a case study, the many disciplines that brought “The Wizard of Oz” to life. On the third floor, familiar faces like R2-D2, Bugs Bunny, and Okoye from “Black Panther” adorn the multi-room “Inventing Worlds & Characters” experience, alongside special installations by director Pedro Almodóvar, composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, and sound designer Ben Burtt.

4. THE PATH TO CINEMA: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE RICHARD BALZER COLLECTION
The late Richard Balzer was a collector and author fascinated by anything related to visual entertainment. His 9,000-piece collection, gathered and meticulously preserved over more than 40 years, includes pre-cinema curiosities from Europe, Asia and America dating as far back as the 17th century. Built around Balzer’s vast labor of love, this (sometimes literally) illuminating exhibition explores the evolution of today’s cinematic experience through a long tradition of optical amusements including peepshows, flip books, zoetropes, and kaleidoscopes, and featuring a magic lantern show created specifically for this exhibition. While quaint today, for generations before the advent of projected movies these were devices of transporting, almost magical wonder.

5. THE OSCARS® EXPERIENCE
If you’re an avid Oscars watcher, you’ve surely wondered how it feels to be invited on stage at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater to accept one of those iconic gold statuettes as the adoring world watches. The Academy Museum’s immersive Oscars Experience simulation is about as close as most of us will ever get to that sensation, from hearing your name called (and of course feigning surprise), to giddily accepting the award. You’ll even receive a video of the event to befuddle your friends and family with for years to come!

6. FANNY’S RESTAURANT & CAFÉ
The Academy Museum is so filled with conversation points that you’ll likely need a break and chat during your visit. Fanny’s Restaurant & Café is the place to digest all you’ve seen and discuss faves and raves with companions. Developed by celebrated restaurateurs Bill Chait and Carl Schuster, the striking two-story space features both small-group and communal tables, an art deco-style bar, and an intimate lounge area with cozy curved booths.

Enjoy cuisine and cocktails by Chef Raphael Francois and Julian Cox, respectively, amid the work of local artists and artisans. A fitting and spectacular mural by L.A. artist Konstantin Kakanias wraps around the dining area, celebrating film and music legends from classical Hollywood to the present day.

7. BACKDROP: AN INVISIBLE ART
The double-height Hurd Gallery is needed to spotlight both the artistry and the contested imagery of a monumental Mt. Rushmore backdrop used in Alfred Hitchcock’s canonical 1959 spy thriller “North by Northwest.” This neck-craning exhibit also serves as a through-provoking reminder of oft-overlooked role of such literally behind-the-scenes creations, and their creators, in the movies that have helped shape our world.

8. ACADEMY MUSEUM STORE
The Academy Museum Store is about as far as you’ll get from the stereotypical fridge-magnets-and-shot-glasses gift shop. Instead, this carefully curated one-off wonder features specially designed merchandise, Oscars memorabilia, and other exclusive film-related treasures: clothing, furniture, accessories, vinyl records, home and office items, posters, maps, illustrations, toys and games, plus an unparalleled selection of books and catalogues. Academy members including costume designer Ruth E. Carter, creative director I. Javier Ameijeiras, and the legendary Spike Lee have complimented their cinematic work by designing items available nowhere else, while the store’s many California-based partners include Amoeba Music, candlemaker Flores Lane, and lifestyle brand Poketo.

9. HAYAO MIYAZAKI

“Hayao Miyazaki” is the Academy Museum’s inaugural temporary exhibition and the first North American museum retrospective devoted to the work of its namesake: one of the most accomplished and internationally celebrated filmmakers in the history of animation. Organized in collaboration with Japan’s Studio Ghibli, which the Oscar-winning Miyazaki co-founded in 1985, it features more than 300 objects – original imageboards, character designs, backgrounds, layouts, storyboards, posters, and cels – including pieces being displayed outside Japan for the first time. The most comprehensive presentation of Miyazaki’s work to date, this retrospective of a nearly 60-year career incorporates all his animated feature films into a series of immersive environments designed to be both experiential and educational.

Photo by Joshua White, Courtesy of the
Academy Museum of Motion Pictures
10. REGENERATION: BLACK CINEMA 1898-1971 (OPENING 2022)

The first of its kind, “Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971” is an in-depth, research-driven exploration of Black participation in American filmmaking. Opening in 2022, it reveals the important yet all too often unsung history of African American filmmakers in the development of this country’s cinema, from its early days to just after the civil rights movement. “Regeneration” highlights the work of independent African American filmmakers, with the goal of redefining US film history by elevating this underrepresented aspect of artistic production and presenting a more inclusive story.

Safe reopening creates opportunities for Vietnam

Tourists at the Golden Bridge in Da Nang's Ba Na Hills
 tourist area. (Photo: VNA)
The Government has agreed with a proposal of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and other public agencies on safely reopening tourism activities by air, road and sea in a new normal condition starting March 15.

The ministry is now completing its related plan for submission to the Government and the Prime Minister as soon as possible, creating favourable conditions for both tourists and local services providers.

Chairman of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) Nguyen Trung Khanh said the opening of tourism needs to ensure COVID-19 prevention and control. In Vietnam, the vaccine coverage is high, but it is still necessary to pay attention to the risk of emergence of new strains.

Khanh said he had asked the Prime Minister to allow the application of the visa policy for visitors to Vietnam as done before 2020, considering it a very favourable condition to attract international visitors and creating competitiveness for the tourism sector.

Regarding "vaccine passport", not many countries have so far recognised Vietnam’s vaccination certificate, making it difficult to bring Vietnamese tourists abroad and causing imbalance in international air transport. Therefore, more negotiations are needed for the industry to access more abundant and better sources of tourists.

To ensure the recovery of Vietnam's tourism, it is necessary to improve the quality of products, facilities, and human resources. The VNAT will propose training and re-training programmes for tourism workers as well as the extension of support policies, particularly in terms of finance and credit, for businesses and employees in the industry.

Khanh said that the EU Delegation to Vietnam has recently assisted 15 Vietnamese cities and provinces in assessing competitiveness of tourist destinations based on different criteria. This is an opportunity for those involved to review and have solutions to improve the competitiveness of their local tourism in the coming time.

The VNAT unveiled that it will continue to vigorously implement the "Live fully in Vietnam" communication campaign, especially on digital platforms; participate in major international tourism fairs in key markets; and work with Vietnamese representative agencies abroad to spread information on Vietnam's tourism.

The northern province of Quang Ninh, home to UNESCO-recognised Ha Long Bay, launched a campaign on safe tourism in mid-March when Vietnam fully reopens its borders to foreign tourists.

Director of the provincial Department of Tourism Pham Ngoc Thuy affirmed that the locality is now totally ready for tourism resumption.

Following the tourism campaign, there will be a roadshow throughout southern cities and provinces, and other localities where many industrial and processing zones are located to promote Quang Ninh’s image.

A number of cultural and art events are scheduled for the second quarter of this year, she said, adding that Quang Ninh will continue its close coordination with the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and agencies under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to hold working sessions with international organisations and Vietnamese diplomatic missions abroad to step up the promotion efforts.
Roadshows will also be held in major markets like China, the Republic of Korea (RoK), Japan and Thailand when possible, according to the official.

Quang Ninh plans to organise a total of about 70 cultural, sport, tourism and trade events and programmes this year to attract holidaymakers. It will also host seven sports of the SEA Games 31, which is expected to help the locality lure more visitors.

The province aims to welcome from 9.5 million to 10 million tourists in 2022, and earn 19 trillion VND (832.69 million USD) from the sector.

Quang Ninh will work to restore tourism products and services while safely adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic. Accordingly, various safe tourism products and programmes are expected to be rolled out in the time ahead.

In 2011, Ha Long Bay, literally “descending dragon bay”, surpassed more than 400 destinations from over 200 countries and territories to be named as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World by the New Open World.

The bay was recognised twice by the UNESCO as World Natural Heritage for its landscape and geographical value. It has a 120-km coastline and is approximately 1,553 square kilometres in size, with 1,969 isles. The limestone in the bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments./.

LE DÎNER EN BLANC SYDNEY MOVES EVENT DATE TO MAY

Following several weeks of storms and heavy flooding and after a thorough inspection of the event site revealed the ground's water saturation level would not support the event’s necessary infrastructure, the team behind Le Dîner En Blanc Sydney have made the difficult decision to postpone the event, originally slated to take place this Saturday 26 March.

The 9th edition of Sydney’s chicest celebration of food, friends and fine wine will now take place on Saturday 14 May 2022, at a secret location.

Already purchased tickets and pre-purchased items on the event’s e-store will automatically be transferred to the new event date.

Antoine Bessis, host of Le Dîner en Blanc in Sydney, said “The decision to postpone was not taken lightly, and has been made in order to respect the integrity of our well-loved event and paramount, the guest experience.

“We hope Sydneysiders will join us on the May 14 for a truly magical night. We’ve got some massive surprises in store too, so the wait will certainly be worth it,” said Bessis.

An elegant and exclusive affair, Le Dîner en Blanc has become THE social gathering of the year for Sydneysiders. The COVID-safe outdoor dining event transports guests into another world, offering guests the opportunity to meet new people or reunite with long-time friends while dressed up in white at a dinner à la Française.

Each year, Le Dîner en Blanc Sydney is staged in a new secret location, past events have been staged at iconic locations such as Bondi Beach, Centennial Parklands, and the Sydney Opera House forecourt.
