A Local’s Guide to Namba: Osaka’s Most Colourful Neighbourhood

Namba
Bold, energetic, and endlessly entertaining, Namba captures the true spirit of Osaka. This is where street food sizzles beside glowing neon signs, retro alleyways weave past centuries-old shrines, and fashion-forward youth culture meets deep-rooted tradition. For first-time visitors, Namba is Osaka at street level—loud, delicious, chaotic, and unforgettable. For returning travellers, it’s a neighbourhood that always reveals something new.

Snack Like a Local in Osaka’s Food Capital

Food is the lifeblood of Namba, and nowhere does Osaka’s reputation as Japan’s kitchen feel more alive. Begin with takoyaki, the city’s iconic octopus-filled batter balls, cooked fresh at street stalls around Dotonbori. Locals insist they should be eaten piping hot, with creamy centres that melt instantly.

For something heartier, duck into a kushikatsu counter. These no-frills eateries serve skewers of meat, seafood, and vegetables fried until golden and crisp. One local rule applies everywhere: no double-dipping in the shared sauce. Finish on a sweet note with matcha soft-serve around Shinsaibashi or Namba Parks, where the deep green tea flavour balances richness with subtle bitterness.

Where Old Osaka Meets the New

Centara Grand Hotel Osaka
Beyond the neon glow, Namba reveals layers of history and spirituality. Namba Yasaka Shrine is one of the district’s most striking sights, with its giant lion-shaped stage said to swallow bad luck and bring success. Locals quietly visit here to pray, offering a calm counterpoint to the surrounding energy.

Just a short walk away, Kuromon Market comes alive each morning. Vendors slice fresh tuna, grill scallops over charcoal, and arrange colourful produce with precision. Arriving early rewards visitors with lighter crowds and a sensory mix of sea air, smoke, and simmering broth.

For a step back in time, wander into Hozenji Yokocho, a narrow lantern-lit alley lined with traditional restaurants and tiny izakaya. At its heart lies Hozenji Temple, where visitors pour water over a moss-covered statue of Fudo-myo’o for good fortune. It is one of Namba’s most atmospheric and quietly moving corners.

Streets Made for Wandering

Namba is best explored without a strict plan. Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Arcade stretches for nearly 600 metres, blending international brands with long-standing local shops. West of here lies Amerikamura, known locally as Amemura, the epicentre of Osaka’s youth culture. Expect bold street fashion, vintage clothing, independent designers, and vibrant street art.

As night falls, Dotonbori takes centre stage. Giant animated signs, glowing billboards, and the famous Glico running man reflect across the canal. This is Osaka at its most theatrical, and an essential stop for photography, people-watching, and late-night snacks.

Practical Tips for Exploring Namba

Centara Grand Hotel Osaka
Namba is compact and walkable, with most attractions clustered around Namba and Shinsaibashi stations. Visit Kuromon Market in the morning, Hozenji Yokocho at dusk, and Dotonbori after dark for the best atmosphere. When enjoying street food, it is polite to stand near the stall rather than eat while walking.

Why Stay in Namba

Making Namba your base puts Osaka’s most dynamic neighbourhood at your doorstep. With direct transport links to Kansai International Airport and easy access to the rest of the city, it is both convenient and endlessly entertaining. Hotels such as Centara Grand Hotel Osaka and Centara Life Osaka place travellers right in the heart of Namba, allowing you to step straight into the sights, flavours, and energy that define this unforgettable district.

A Stylish Sydney Getaway: Where to Stay, Eat, and Be Entertained

Guys & Dolls
Sydney, Australia's iconic harbour city, offers an exciting blend of stunning views, cultural experiences, and world-class dining. During my recent trip, I discovered the perfect mix of comfortable accommodations, delectable meals, and unforgettable entertainment. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, here’s a guide to the best places to stay, dine, and enjoy live shows in Sydney.

Cozy and Convenient Stays in Sydney

For a seamless experience, I chose two excellent hotels that offered both style and convenience.

My first stop was the Moxy Sydney Airport, located in the vibrant suburb of Mascot. This trendy hotel provided easy access to the airport while being just a short train ride from the city center. The contemporary design and vibrant atmosphere made it an enjoyable base to explore the city.

Next, I stayed at Veriu Macquarie Park, another modern gem, recently opened in December. This property features spacious apartment suites and boasts excellent transport connections, with a new underground Metro station right next door. Both hotels were perfect for a few days of relaxation and convenient exploration.

Dining Delights: From Casual to Elegant

Sydney's food scene is diverse, offering something for everyone. Whether you're after a quick bite or an indulgent dining experience, the city does not disappoint.

During my stay at the Moxy Sydney Airport, I enjoyed a casual and delicious lunch at the hotel’s vibrant restaurant. The atmosphere was lively, and the food was a perfect match for the energetic vibe of the space.

For a taste of local flavours, I dined at Cafe Pinnacle in Macquarie Park. This charming cafe provided a relaxed atmosphere and fresh, seasonal dishes that hit the spot. It was an ideal choice for a midday break from sightseeing.

One evening, I enjoyed a hearty meal at Laneway Hotel & Sports Bar in Pyrmont. The ambiance was laid-back, yet stylish, and the food offerings were hearty and satisfying—perfect after a day of exploring. The following evening, I enjoyed a pre-theater dinner at Amber Restaurant at Rydges World Square. It’s the perfect spot for a meal before a show, with an extensive menu that caters to every taste.

Entertainment Extravaganza: Shows and Exhibitions

Sydney’s entertainment options are second to none, and I was fortunate to experience a range of theatrical performances during my visit.

The highlight of my trip was seeing MJ the Musical at the Lyric Theatre. This dazzling show brought the life and music of Michael Jackson to the stage in an unforgettable way. It was an exhilarating experience that left me wanting more.

Another unforgettable performance was Annie at the Capitol Theatre. This classic musical was performed with energy and charm, bringing the story of the lovable orphan to life with heartwarming songs and performances.

For something a bit different, I headed to Opera on the Harbour for a stunning rendition of Guys & Dolls. Set against the breathtaking Sydney Harbour backdrop, the production was an incredible blend of music, drama, and scenic beauty.

In addition to musicals, I was invited to the Head in the Clouds exhibition, an opening night event at the Rainbow Studios in Darlinghurst. The showcase of work by talented artist Papou offered a unique perspective on modern art, and it was a highlight of my artistic exploration in Sydney.

A Perfect Few Days in Sydney

Sydney
In just a few days, I was able to experience the very best of Sydney. From stylish accommodations to exceptional dining and world-class entertainment, my trip was filled with memorable moments. If you're planning a visit to this beautiful city, be sure to explore these fantastic options that will make your stay both enjoyable and convenient.

Sydney Ranks Second in APAC Hotel Investment, Tapping into Strong Market Growth

Sydney
Sydney has solidified its position as the second most attractive city for hotel investment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, according to CBRE’s 2025 Asia Pacific Hotel Investor Intentions Survey. Only Tokyo surpasses Sydney in terms of investor interest, while Seoul and Bangkok are tied for third, and Singapore and Osaka share the fifth spot. The results reflect a significant rebound in tourism across the region, fueling investor confidence in hotel assets.

The surge in tourist arrivals, particularly from Japan, Singapore, and Australia, has driven a renewed interest in hotel investments, with many investors eager to capitalize on the limited supply of hotel rooms in the region. The survey revealed that over 72% of investors are planning to increase their hotel investment allocations across APAC in 2025, signaling a bullish outlook for the sector.

Steve Carroll, Head of Hotels, Capital Markets, Asia Pacific at CBRE, noted, “After performing strongly over the past 18 months, investors anticipate hotel and living assets in Asia Pacific to have the most optimistic pricing expectations in 2025.” Carroll highlighted the role of increased international arrivals in pushing up hotel room rates across the region, further solidifying the income growth that hotel operators have seen in the past year.

The findings of the survey, conducted in November and December 2024, also shed light on shifting investor preferences within the hotel sector. Following a period of strong activity in the luxury hotel market, investor focus has shifted toward the upscale and upper midscale segments. This shift aligns with a broader trend of investors seeking assets with strong potential for value growth, particularly through rebranding and redevelopment strategies.

Investors are also proceeding with caution when it comes to major investment decisions. With interest rate cuts underway in many major markets, there is a wait-and-see approach regarding the scope of future cuts, especially outside of Japan. Despite this, the appetite for hotel investments in key APAC markets, including Sydney, remains robust.

The survey also emphasized the importance of well-located, high-quality hotel assets, with these properties continuing to attract the most investor attention. This focus on prime locations comes as expectations for continued growth in mainland Chinese outbound tourism remain high. Additionally, there is optimism about further occupancy improvements, as well as increasing interest from institutional investors.

As the APAC hotel investment market continues to evolve, Sydney’s status as a leading destination for hotel investments is a testament to its appeal as both a business hub and a tourist hotspot. With ongoing growth in international tourism and an increase in investor confidence, Sydney is well-positioned to maintain its spot as a top hotel investment destination in the region.

The outlook for 2025 and beyond suggests that the APAC hotel market will continue to attract strong investor interest, especially in cities like Sydney that offer a combination of high-quality assets, strategic location, and a resilient tourism industry. As investors focus on value-add opportunities and the market adjusts to evolving conditions, Sydney is expected to remain a key player in the APAC hotel investment landscape.

Tokyo Leads the Way in APAC Hotel Investment for 2025

Tokyo
Tokyo has been crowned the top city for hotel investment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, according to the CBRE’s 2025 Asia Pacific Hotel Investor Intentions Survey. The Japanese capital has overtaken other major cities in the region, including Sydney, Seoul, and Singapore, to secure the top spot, reflecting a strong surge in investor confidence driven by the city’s recovering tourism sector and strategic location as a key global business hub.

The 2025 survey reveals that Tokyo’s hotel market is a primary focal point for investors who see the city as an attractive proposition for both short-term returns and long-term growth. The capital’s established infrastructure, increasing international arrivals, and robust demand for hotel rooms continue to position Tokyo as a key player in the APAC hotel investment landscape. With Japan’s tourism sector on the rise and the country experiencing strong visitor arrivals, Tokyo’s hotel assets have become a highly sought-after commodity.

The surge in hotel investment activity is also being spurred by the growing international interest in Japan. Tokyo, in particular, is benefitting from a resurgence in inbound tourism as Japan reopens its doors to the world. In addition to the tourism boost, the city’s significant business and corporate travel demand remains strong, adding to its appeal for investors.

Steve Carroll, Head of Hotels, Capital Markets, Asia Pacific at CBRE, commented on the positive outlook, saying, “Investors have high expectations for pricing in the Tokyo hotel market in 2025. The increase in international arrivals and a rise in hotel room rates have further solidified the positive outlook for Tokyo’s hotel market, ensuring a steady growth in income for operators.”

The survey also revealed that a significant portion of investors—more than 72%—are planning to increase their hotel investment allocations in the APAC region. While Tokyo remains the top destination for hotel investments, there is also a broader interest in the upscale and upper midscale hotel segments across the region. The strong investor appetite for hotels that can offer both value and growth opportunities has driven increased attention to these segments, especially in well-established markets like Tokyo.

The report further highlighted that investors are becoming more focused on value-add strategies, looking for opportunities to rebrand, renovate, or redevelop hotel assets as they seek to maximize returns. With new development costs remaining high, these strategies are increasingly seen as attractive alternatives to starting from scratch. In Tokyo, the demand for redevelopment and rebranding opportunities is expected to continue growing, further cementing the city’s place as a hotbed for investment activity.

Despite global economic challenges, including inflation and interest rate uncertainties, Tokyo’s market resilience stands out. Investors are optimistic about Japan’s stable economy, improved tourism infrastructure, and the anticipated continued growth of international arrivals, particularly from neighboring countries in Asia.

With Tokyo firmly in the lead, the 2025 APAC hotel investment landscape looks set to be dominated by the city’s well-established and highly lucrative hotel market. As the demand for hotel rooms continues to rise, and as Tokyo strengthens its position as both a business and tourism hub, hotel investments in the city are expected to remain a top priority for investors in the APAC region for the foreseeable future.

As Tokyo remains the premier destination for hotel investments, it reflects the broader trend of recovery and growth within the hospitality sector across the Asia Pacific. Investors continue to look to Tokyo as a blueprint for success, with the city’s market dynamics and strong fundamentals promising both steady returns and long-term growth potential in the coming years.
