The Asian airports are dominating the world in terms of ranking. In the recently concluded 2015 World Airport Awards, held in Paris, six Asian Airports have made the list of the top 10 airports in the world. Singapore’s Changi Airport retained the top position for the third consecutive year.
Changi Airport was also voted as the best airport for leisure activities. The latest rankings witnessed Tokyo International Haneda rising one spot to the fifth place, where as the Central Japan International Airport jumped up five positions to the number seven spot in 2015.
Based on 13.02 million customer nominations, the World Airport Awards include 550 airports worldwide. The survey evaluates customer satisfaction across key performance indicators such as check-in, arrivals, transfers and shopping facilities.
New developments at Singapore Changi’s include Terminal 4, due to open in 2017. Terminal 4 is being built where the former Budget Terminal was located and will open with a capacity to handle up to 16 million passengers a year.
Other developments progressing at Changi airport include Jewel, a retail-cum-airport development, due to open in 2018. The building will have five floors above ground with five basement levels.
Designed by Moshe Safdie – the man behind Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands – Jewel will feature a 40 metre-high indoor waterfall and a towering indoor garden. Also being planned is a 130-room hotel. The complex will be linked to the three main terminals.
Terminal 1 is undergoing a major refurbishment, due for completion in 2018 – while mega Terminal 5 is expected to open in the middle of the next decade.
