Scoot Opens the Door to Guiyang: Discover China’s Scenic Southwest from Australia

Scoot Pikachu Jet
Australian travellers looking for a new destination in China will soon have another exciting option, with Scoot announcing new flights to Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province.

From 26 October 2026, the Singapore Airlines Group low-cost carrier will operate three weekly flights to Guiyang, opening a new gateway for Australian travellers wanting to discover one of southwest China’s emerging tourism destinations.

With one-way Economy Class fares starting from AUD270 from Perth and AUD300 from Sydney and Melbourne, inclusive of taxes, the new Scoot Guiyang flights offer another potentially attractive option for travellers planning a China holiday.

The new route also strengthens Scoot’s growing China network while expanding opportunities for Australian travellers to connect through Singapore and explore more of Asia.

Guiyang: A New Chinese Destination to Discover

Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou province and provides a gateway to a region renowned for dramatic mountain scenery, lush landscapes, distinctive cultures and spectacular natural attractions.

Unlike China's better-known tourism cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, Guiyang offers visitors an opportunity to explore a less familiar side of the country.

The city combines modern urban life with historic neighbourhoods, traditional culture and easy access to some of Guizhou's most impressive natural and heritage attractions.

For Australian travellers who have already visited China's major cities, or those searching for a different China travel experience, Guiyang could prove an intriguing new destination.

New Scoot Flights to Guiyang from October 2026

Scoot will commence three times weekly flights to Guiyang from 26 October 2026.

The new service will be operated by Airbus A320neo aircraft and forms part of Scoot's Northern Winter 2026/2027 schedule.

According to the airline's announcement, one-way Economy Class fares to Guiyang start from:

  • AUD270 from Perth
  • AUD300 from Sydney
  • AUD300 from Melbourne

The fares are inclusive of taxes.

Flights are available for booking through Scoot's website, mobile application and progressively through other booking channels.

Travellers should check the latest fare conditions, baggage allowances and flight schedules before booking, as fares and schedules can change and flights remain subject to government and regulatory approvals.

Explore the Historic Qingyan Ancient Town

Scoot 787
One of the attractions highlighted by Scoot is Qingyan Ancient Town, one of the best-preserved historic towns in Guizhou.

Located near Guiyang, Qingyan provides visitors with an opportunity to step away from modern China and experience traditional architecture, historic streets and cultural heritage.

The town's atmospheric lanes and stone buildings make it an appealing destination for travellers interested in Chinese history, architecture and photography.

Qingyan can also provide an excellent introduction to the distinctive character of Guizhou before travellers venture further into the province.

Discover Huangguoshu Waterfall

For nature lovers, one of Guizhou's major attractions is Huangguoshu Waterfall.

Located southwest of Guiyang, the spectacular waterfall is one of the largest in Asia and is surrounded by dramatic mountain and river landscapes.

The scale of Huangguoshu makes it one of the standout natural attractions in southwest China.

For Australian travellers accustomed to Australia's spectacular waterfalls, coastlines and national parks, visiting Huangguoshu provides an opportunity to experience a dramatically different natural environment.

A visit can also be combined with exploring other landscapes and cultural attractions throughout Guizhou province.

A Region of Mountains, Culture and Green Landscapes

Guizhou is particularly appealing for travellers who enjoy nature and cultural experiences.

The province is characterised by mountains, valleys, forests, waterfalls and rivers, while its diverse ethnic communities contribute to a rich cultural landscape.

Visitors can discover traditional villages, local food, festivals, handicrafts and distinctive architectural traditions while travelling through the region.

For travellers increasingly looking beyond conventional sightseeing, this combination of nature and culture makes Guizhou an intriguing destination for a longer China itinerary.

Scoot Expands Its China Network

Scoot Cabin Crew
The Guiyang announcement is part of a wider expansion of Scoot's Asia-Pacific network.

With the addition of Guiyang, Scoot says it will operate 81 weekly flights to 16 cities in mainland China.

The airline's overall network will expand to 86 destinations across 18 countries and territories spanning the Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Europe.

Scoot's expanding network provides Australian travellers with additional opportunities to use Singapore as a gateway to destinations throughout Asia.

For travellers who enjoy combining destinations, a Guiyang holiday could potentially be incorporated into a wider itinerary that includes Singapore or other Asian cities served by Scoot, subject to available connections and booking arrangements.

More Scoot Flights Across Asia-Pacific

Guiyang is not the only destination receiving additional capacity.

As part of its Northern Winter 2026/2027 schedule, running from 26 October 2026 to 29 April 2027, Scoot is increasing frequencies on several routes in response to anticipated year-end travel demand.

The airline has announced progressive increases to destinations including Hat Yai, Phuket, Clark, Kota Kinabalu, Okinawa and Tiruchirappalli.

Scoot is also introducing larger aircraft progressively on flights to Phu Quoc.

The announced frequency changes include Hat Yai increasing from 12 to 14 weekly flights, Phuket from 17 to 21, Clark from seven to 10 weekly flights from December 2026, Kota Kinabalu from 10 to 13 weekly flights from January 2027 and Okinawa from four to five weekly flights.

Tiruchirappalli will increase from 12 to 14 weekly flights from December 2026, while Phu Quoc will have daily flights with a gradual transition from Embraer E190-E2 aircraft to aircraft from the Airbus A320 family.

Why Guiyang Could Be the Next Big China Travel Discovery

The introduction of direct Scoot services to Guiyang from Singapore is significant for Australian travellers because it provides a new route into a part of China that has considerable potential for international tourism.

Guizhou offers a different travel experience from China's traditional gateway cities.

Its combination of dramatic landscapes, minority cultures, historic towns and outdoor attractions makes it particularly suitable for travellers seeking authentic cultural and nature-based experiences.

The new flights also arrive at a time when Australian travellers are increasingly looking for new destinations across Asia.

Affordable airfares, expanding airline networks and easier connections are making it possible to explore destinations that previously required more complicated itineraries.

Plan a China Holiday with Guiyang at the Centre

Scoot E190 E2
A visit to Guiyang can form part of a broader southwest China itinerary.

Travellers could begin in Guiyang before exploring Qingyan Ancient Town and continuing towards Huangguoshu Waterfall.

Depending on the length of the holiday, visitors could then explore other parts of Guizhou and experience its mountain scenery, villages, food and cultural attractions.

The destination could appeal particularly to independent travellers, couples, photographers, adventure seekers, food lovers and visitors who have already explored China's major cities.

For Australian travellers, the new Scoot service also creates the possibility of combining Guiyang with Singapore or another Asian destination as part of a multi-destination holiday.

More Choice for Australian Travellers

Scoot's new Guiyang service demonstrates how the aviation network across Asia continues to evolve.

For Australian travellers, additional routes mean more choice when planning holidays and more opportunities to discover destinations away from traditional tourism circuits.

Perth travellers will have access to advertised one-way fares from AUD270, while travellers from Sydney and Melbourne can access advertised one-way fares from AUD300, inclusive of taxes.

Actual fares will depend on travel dates, availability, fare type and any additional services selected.

As always, travellers should check the current fare and flight information directly with the airline before making travel arrangements.

Guiyang Beckons from October 2026

From 26 October 2026, Guiyang will become part of Scoot's expanding international network, offering Australian travellers a new way to discover the mountains, waterfalls, historic towns and cultural richness of Guizhou.

The new three-times-weekly service provides an exciting opportunity to explore a less familiar side of China while benefiting from Scoot's expanding Asia-Pacific network.

For travellers searching for new places to visit in China, Guiyang deserves a place on the list.

With Qingyan Ancient Town, Huangguoshu Waterfall, spectacular mountain landscapes and a rich multicultural heritage, Guizhou offers the kind of destination experience that can turn a conventional China holiday into something much more memorable.

Sydney’s Friendly Neighbourhood Hero Takes Flight: Melbourne Airport’s Spider-Man Surprise Delights Travellers

Spider-Man
A Superhero Send-Off at Melbourne Airport

Passengers departing from Melbourne Airport recently enjoyed an unforgettable surprise when the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man made a spectacular appearance in the Scoot check-in area. What began as a normal day of travel quickly became an exciting holiday memory after airport staff made a playful announcement calling for the mysterious "Peter Parker."

Within moments, Spider-Man appeared to the delight of travellers, creating smiles throughout the terminal. Families, children and excited passengers gathered for photographs, while many paused their check-in routine to enjoy the unexpected entertainment before boarding their flights.

The surprise transformed an ordinary airport departure into a memorable travel experience, reminding holidaymakers that sometimes the journey can be just as enjoyable as the destination.

Creating Memorable Airport Experiences

Modern airports are becoming much more than places to catch a flight. Increasingly, they are creating engaging experiences that add excitement to the beginning of every holiday.

The Spider-Man appearance at Melbourne Airport perfectly captured this trend. As passengers prepared to travel, the iconic superhero greeted visitors, posed for countless selfies and brought plenty of energy to the departure hall.

Scoot staff enthusiastically joined the celebration by distributing themed merchandise, helping create an atmosphere that delighted travellers of all ages. The event demonstrated how creative collaborations can make airport experiences more enjoyable while giving passengers a memorable start to their holiday.

Celebrating Spider-Man: Brand New Day

The airport appearance formed part of Scoot's exciting partnership with Sony Pictures to celebrate the upcoming Australian cinema release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, arriving in cinemas on 30 July.

The collaboration extends well beyond the airport terminal. Scoot has introduced specially themed aircraft that bring the Spider-Man experience into the skies, allowing passengers across Asia-Pacific to travel aboard aircraft celebrating one of the world's most popular superheroes.

For fans of Marvel and blockbuster movies, the partnership adds an extra layer of excitement to international travel.

Spider-Man Takes to the Skies

Spider-Man
Scoot's specially themed fleet includes both an Airbus A321neo and a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, each featuring impressive Spider-Man: Brand New Day artwork across the aircraft exterior.

Inside the aircraft, passengers will discover specially designed headrest covers and entertainment elements inspired by the upcoming film, including music associated with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The immersive experience creates a unique atmosphere from boarding through to arrival.

These distinctive aircraft are scheduled to operate routes across Australia, China, Japan, the Philippines and Thailand until 13 September, giving thousands of travellers the opportunity to experience something a little different on their next flight.

A Unique Holiday Begins Before Take-Off

For many travellers, memorable holidays begin the moment they arrive at the airport. Special events like this demonstrate how airlines are finding creative ways to enhance the customer experience long before passengers reach their destination.

Whether travelling for business, family holidays or overseas adventures, unexpected moments of fun can leave lasting impressions and become part of the travel story itself.

Melbourne Airport's Spider-Man surprise proved that even a routine check-in can become an unforgettable experience when imagination takes centre stage.

Why Travellers Love Unique Airline Experiences

Airlines continue to look for innovative ways to engage passengers, and themed aircraft have become increasingly popular around the world. They provide travellers with something distinctive to photograph, share and remember, while creating excitement around major entertainment releases.

Scoot's Spider-Man collaboration combines aviation, popular culture and family-friendly entertainment in a way that appeals to travellers of every age. It also highlights the airline's growing presence across the Asia-Pacific region, connecting major cities while offering enjoyable onboard experiences.

For visitors planning holidays throughout Australia and Asia, spotting or flying aboard one of these specially themed aircraft could become an unexpected highlight of the journey.

Spider-Man Takes Flight: Scoot Launches Spectacular Movie-Themed Travel Experie

Travellers looking for a memorable journey now have another reason to fly with Scoot, as the Singapore-based airline unveiled an exciting collaboration with Sony Pictures' latest blockbuster, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The limited-time partnership transformed selected aircraft into flying celebrations of one of the world's most beloved superheroes, creating a unique travel experience for passengers across Asia-Pacific destinations.

Available until 13 September 2026, the collaboration combined themed aircraft interiors, exclusive merchandise and immersive airport experiences, offering travellers a chance to step into the world of Spider-Man before even reaching their destination.

Spider-Man Swings Onto Scoot Aircraft

The special promotion featured two aircraft types from Scoot's fleet – an Airbus A321neo and a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Both aircraft were decorated with eye-catching Spider-Man: Brand New Day decals and specially designed headrest covers, bringing the excitement of the movie directly into the cabin.

Adding to the atmosphere, music from Spider-Man: Brand New Day played during the flight experience, creating a unique environment that extended the movie magic from take-off to landing.

Passengers also had the opportunity to purchase exclusive themed merchandise onboard. Limited-edition gifts included Spider-Man flight tags and foldable eco bags, giving fans a memorable keepsake from their journey.

Tokyo And Chiang Mai Hosted The Inaugural Flights

The first Spider-Man-themed flights took to the skies in late June 2026. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated the inaugural themed service to Tokyo Haneda Airport on 30 June, while the Airbus A321neo launched its first themed journey to Chiang Mai on 1 July.

Following these debut flights, the aircraft were rostered across selected destinations in Australia, China, Japan, the Philippines and Thailand. Because the themed aircraft also operated on other regular services, some passengers unexpectedly found themselves onboard a Spider-Man flight, adding an element of surprise to their travel plans.

An Immersive Experience Began At Changi Airport

The Spider-Man adventure started long before boarding. At Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 1, Scoot created dedicated Spider-Man installations around the check-in area, allowing travellers to immerse themselves in the movie's world before departure.

The interactive displays provided photo opportunities and enhanced the excitement surrounding the themed flights, helping to create a seamless entertainment experience from airport to arrival.

Scoot Continues To Innovate In The Travel Market

The collaboration highlighted Scoot's ongoing commitment to delivering creative travel experiences beyond traditional airline services. As competition within the aviation sector continues to grow, airlines are increasingly seeking innovative partnerships that enhance the customer journey and create memorable moments for passengers.

By combining travel with popular entertainment franchises, Scoot successfully demonstrated how airlines can transform routine flights into engaging experiences that appeal to families, movie fans and leisure travellers alike.

The initiative also reinforced Singapore's position as a leading aviation hub where innovation, tourism and entertainment continue to intersect in exciting new ways.

A New Chapter For Experiential Travel

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day partnership reflected a growing trend within the travel industry towards immersive and experience-driven journeys. Today's travellers increasingly seek unique experiences that begin before they reach their destination, and themed flights offer a compelling way to enhance the overall travel experience.

For Spider-Man fans, aviation enthusiasts and holidaymakers alike, Scoot's latest collaboration delivered an unforgettable adventure in the skies while showcasing the airline's ability to bring creativity and entertainment into modern air travel.

Window Seat Wins: New Survey Reveals How Australians Really Like to Fly

Bo Jio, B787
A new nationwide survey by Scoot has revealed fascinating insights into the travel habits, preferences and priorities of Australian travellers, with one clear winner emerging in the long-running debate over airline seating: the window seat.

According to "The Great Aussie Seat Survey", conducted by research company PureProfile on behalf of Scoot, more than half of Australians prefer a window seat when flying, highlighting a growing desire for comfort, privacy and a more personalised travel experience.

The survey, which gathered responses from more than 1,000 Australians, provides an intriguing snapshot of how travellers are making decisions in 2026 and offers valuable insights into the future of air travel.

Window Seats Remain Australia's Favourite Place to Fly

For many travellers, the journey begins the moment they step onboard, and where they choose to sit can shape the entire flight experience.

The survey found that 52 per cent of Australians prefer a window seat, making it the nation's most popular seating choice.

The appeal is easy to understand. Thirty-eight per cent of respondents said they enjoy the views and the opportunity to photograph landscapes, coastlines and city skylines from above. Another 23 per cent value the reduced interruptions that come with sitting by the window, allowing them to relax without needing to move for fellow passengers.

The findings suggest that modern travellers increasingly view flying as part of the overall travel experience rather than simply transportation between destinations.

Aisle Seats Remain a Strong Contender

Scoot 787
While the window seat claimed top position, aisle seating remains highly popular among Australian travellers.

Thirty-six per cent of respondents chose aisle seats as their preferred option, citing comfort, convenience and easier access to the cabin as key benefits.

Only three per cent selected the middle seat as their preferred location onboard, reinforcing its reputation as the least desirable place to spend a flight.

The results highlight how personal travel preferences continue to influence booking decisions and onboard experiences.

Peace and Quiet Outweigh Celebrity Encounters

One of the survey's most entertaining findings involved Australians' dream celebrity seatmates.

Hollywood star Margot Robbie topped the list as the celebrity Australians would most like to sit beside on a flight, followed by Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman.

The top ten celebrity choices also included Delta Goodrem, Robert Irwin, Ash Barty, Pat Cummins, Jimmy Barnes, Hamish Blake and Cate Blanchett.

However, despite the appeal of celebrity company, nearly one-quarter of respondents said they would rather not sit next to a famous person at all.

Instead, Australians overwhelmingly preferred quiet fellow passengers who keep to themselves. Forty-two per cent selected a quiet traveller as their ideal seatmate, while 30 per cent preferred someone polite and helpful.

Only 14 per cent said they would choose a funny and talkative companion, indicating that many travellers see flying as valuable downtime rather than a social occasion.

Comfort and Value Drive Travel Decisions

The survey highlights that Australian travellers continue to focus on comfort and affordability when choosing flights.

Comfort and personal space emerged as the most important inflight consideration, selected by 65 per cent of respondents. Value for money followed closely at 55 per cent, while peace and quiet ranked third at 52 per cent.

These findings reflect a growing trend among travellers who view flights as an opportunity to relax, rest and recharge before reaching their destination.

Factors such as inflight food, social interaction and baggage storage ranked lower on the priority list, suggesting that personal comfort has become the dominant concern for many travellers.

The Rise of Personalised Travel Experiences

A321neo Aircraft
One of the strongest themes emerging from the survey is the increasing importance of travel customisation.

An overwhelming 85 per cent of Australians said they value the ability to personalise their travel experience by selecting optional extras and services that match their individual needs.

Extra legroom was the most sought-after upgrade, chosen by 40 per cent of respondents, followed by premium seating upgrades at 35 per cent.

Travel insurance, quiet zone seating and pre-selected meals also ranked highly among optional purchases.

The results indicate that travellers increasingly prefer flexibility and control rather than paying for services they may not use.

Australians Seek Better Value in the Air

With cost-of-living pressures continuing to influence household budgets, many travellers are carefully evaluating where they spend their money when booking flights.

The survey found that Australians are willing to forgo several onboard services to secure lower fares.

Wi-Fi, inflight amenities, entertainment systems, meals and even seat selection were among the services respondents would consider skipping if it reduced the overall cost of their journey.

These findings support the growing popularity of low-cost carriers that allow passengers to customise their travel experience according to their priorities and budget.

Low-Cost Airlines Continue to Evolve

Adam Kelly
The research also highlights changing perceptions of low-cost airlines among Australian travellers.

Nearly half of respondents identified value for money as the primary benefit of flying with a low-cost carrier, while many appreciated the ability to pay only for the extras they genuinely need.

The findings demonstrate how the low-cost airline model has evolved beyond simply offering the cheapest fare. Modern travellers increasingly value flexibility, transparency and the freedom to tailor their travel experience.

According to Scoot General Manager for Australia, Adam Kelly, today's travellers are seeking greater choice, value and control when planning their journeys.

With access to more than 80 destinations across Scoot's network and connections throughout the Singapore Airlines Group, Australian travellers are finding more opportunities to explore the world while travelling on their own terms.

What the Survey Reveals About Modern Travel

The Great Aussie Seat Survey provides a revealing glimpse into the mindset of Australian travellers in 2026.

Whether choosing a window seat to admire spectacular aerial views, seeking a peaceful inflight environment, or customising every aspect of their journey, Australians are placing greater emphasis on comfort, value and personal choice.

As airlines continue to adapt to changing passenger expectations, understanding these preferences will play an important role in shaping the future of air travel.

For travellers, the message is clear: the modern journey is no longer one-size-fits-all. Today's passengers want flexibility, comfort and the freedom to travel exactly the way they choose.

Scoot Expands Horizons With New Airbus A320neo Fleet Investment

Airbus A321neo
Scoot Strengthens Singapore’s Position as a Leading Aviation Hub

Asian air travel is entering a new era of expansion, and low-cost carrier Scoot is positioning itself at the forefront of that growth. The Singapore-based airline has announced a major fleet expansion with an order for 11 additional Airbus A320neo family aircraft, reinforcing its commitment to stronger regional connectivity, sustainable aviation, and affordable travel across Asia-Pacific.

The expansion includes a firm order for five new Airbus A320neo family aircraft and the exercise of options for six more aircraft from an earlier agreement with Airbus. Deliveries are scheduled to begin progressively from 2028, providing the airline with additional flexibility to expand routes and increase passenger capacity.

The move reflects growing confidence in the future of travel demand throughout the Asia-Pacific region, where international tourism and business travel continue to rebound strongly.

New Aircraft to Unlock More Regional Travel Opportunities

The additional aircraft will significantly increase Scoot’s operational capabilities across medium-haul destinations within a five- to six-hour flight radius from Singapore. This enhanced range will allow the airline to launch new routes, strengthen existing services, and provide smoother connections into the broader Singapore Airlines Group network.

The new fleet additions will feature modern single-class cabin layouts, with the Airbus A320neo configured with 186 seats and the larger Airbus A321neo offering 236 seats. Powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines, the aircraft are designed for greater fuel efficiency and lower operating costs.

For travellers, this means more affordable flight options, expanded destination choices, and improved access to emerging cities across Southeast Asia and North Asia.

Scoot’s Growing Network Continues to Open New Destinations

Over recent years, Scoot has steadily expanded its footprint across Asia and beyond. Since the 2022/2023 financial year, the airline has introduced 25 new destinations into the Singapore Airlines Group network.

Many of these routes target emerging tourism markets and secondary cities that were previously underserved by international airlines. Destinations such as Chiang Rai in Thailand and Phu Quoc in Vietnam have become increasingly attractive to travellers seeking authentic experiences away from crowded tourist hotspots.

Scoot has also ventured further into Europe with routes including Vienna, Austria, demonstrating the airline’s growing ambitions in the long-haul market.

Importantly, 16 of these new destinations are operated exclusively by Scoot from Singapore, highlighting the carrier’s unique role in expanding direct international connectivity through Changi Airport.

Singapore Changi Airport Benefits From Scoot’s Expansion

Airbus A321neo
By June 2026, Scoot is expected to serve 85 destinations, accounting for approximately half of all destinations connected through Singapore Changi Airport.

This continued expansion further strengthens Singapore’s reputation as one of the world’s leading aviation hubs. Increased connectivity not only benefits travellers but also boosts tourism, trade, and economic activity throughout the region.

Scoot Chief Executive Officer Leslie Thng said the airline expects travel demand across Asia-Pacific to continue growing strongly in the years ahead.

He noted that the flexibility and efficiency of the Airbus A320neo family aircraft will provide new opportunities for network growth while offering passengers more seamless travel experiences throughout the Singapore Airlines Group network.

A Modern Fleet Supporting Sustainable Aviation Goals

Scoot’s expansion strategy is also closely tied to sustainability and environmental efficiency. The airline currently operates a modern fleet of 63 aircraft, including Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Airbus A320 family aircraft, and Embraer E190-E2 regional jets.

As part of its fleet renewal programme, Scoot plans to retire its older Airbus A320ceo aircraft by 2028 and replace them with newer-generation aircraft that consume significantly less fuel.

The Airbus A320neo family burns up to 20 percent less fuel than previous-generation aircraft, reducing carbon emissions while supporting the Singapore Airlines Group’s long-term target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The recently introduced Embraer E190-E2 regional jets also contribute to these sustainability goals, offering quieter operations and improved fuel efficiency for regional services.

Affordable Travel Across Asia Continues to Grow

Scoot’s fleet investment signals strong confidence in the future of affordable travel across Asia-Pacific. As demand rises for both leisure and business travel, the airline’s expanding network will create greater opportunities for travellers to explore new destinations with competitive fares and improved connectivity.

For Australian travellers, Singapore continues to serve as one of the most convenient gateways into Asia and Europe. Scoot’s growing network provides more affordable options for connecting through Singapore to destinations across Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, China, and beyond.

With a modern fleet, expanding route map, and commitment to sustainable growth, Scoot is shaping the future of low-cost travel in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation regions.

Solo Travel Surges for Australians *Top Wishlist Destinations Revealed*

Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines (SIA), today announced the findings of a commissioned survey on solo travelling. Commissioned by Scoot, YouGov conducted a survey with over 5,000 respondents across five countries within Asia-Pacific (APAC), including 1,017 respondents from Australia, to unpack the growing solo travel trend across the region.

By examining traveller demographics, travel motivations and considerations, planning behaviours, as well as cultural attitudes, Scoot’s first-ever white paper offers a window into the mindset of today’s self-directed explorer.

Solo Travel Emerges as Mainstream Travel Choice

Once seen as a niche pursuit, solo travel in Australia has increasingly become a common lifestyle choice. Eight in 10 (81%) of solo travellers in Australia embarked on solo trips in the past year, with more than half (54%) undertaking two or more. The interest in solo travel is expected to keep up, with close to nine in 10 (87%) Australians planning to take a solo trip in the next 12 months.

A large proportion of respondents from Australia (83%) are likely to recommend solo vacations to others. This growing trend is closely tied to broader lifestyle shifts, from increased demands at work and home to a rising emphasis on personal wellbeing. 56% of solo travellers from Australia cite freedom and flexibility to plan their own itineraries as their primary motivation, while 45% view solo travel as an opportunity to take a break and focus on themselves. Notably, another 44% value the opportunity to pursue activities and hobbies they enjoy.

In Australia, solo getaways have become a modern ritual for self-care and self-discovery, Scoot enables these journeys by connecting Australia to popular Southeast Asian destinations such as Indonesia and Thailand - renowned for their wellness and personal growth experiences. Research also shows solo travellers continue to favour Asia for its affordability and rich experiences.

Scoot’s findings dovetail the rise in mindfulness, health and wellness, highlighting how travel, especially solo travel has evolved from simply being a leisure activity to one that travellers growingly seek for reflection and self-discovery.

“For many Australians, it’s no longer just about ticking off bucket list destinations, it’s about slowing down, reconnecting with yourself, and embracing the destination. This white paper highlights the mindset shift towards solo travel. Australians are embracing solo trips not out of necessity, but out of choice. Whilst we still have amazing journeys with friends and family, solo travel sparks a sense of lone adventure where you can go your own way and choose a unique journey bespoke to you." Adam Kelly, General Manager, Scoot Australia.

Whether they are setting off for wellness, wanderlust, or a bit of both, Scoot’s extensive network to over 70 destinations, products and affordable fares allow travellers to explore the world confidently.” he added.

Research and Planning Are Key Priorities for Solo Travellers

While independence may be one of the core appeals, solo travellers in Australia today are far from impulsive. In fact, they are highly intentional in their approach with planning for their trips. Aside from booking flights, the main priorities for half or more of these travellers include accommodation selection (63%), budget management (53%), and safety considerations (45%). They rely heavily on online travel agencies (32%), hotel and airline websites or apps (54%), and recommendations from family and friends (34%) to help them make informed decisions with flight and accommodation bookings.

Japan, Singapore and Thailand Top Asia-Pacific Travel Wishlist, With Value Driving the Journey

The white paper also revealed a trend for easy-to-reach APAC hotspots, with the likes of Japan, Singapore and Thailand named as some of the top solo locations for Australians to visit within the Asia-Pacific region.

Top 10 Solo Travel Wishlist Destinations in APAC for Australians (excluding Australia/domestic travel):
  1. New Zealand
  2. Japan
  3. Singapore
  4. Thailand
  5. China
  6. Vietnam
  7. Malaysia
  8. Indonesia
  9. Philippines
  10. South Korea / India (tie)

These choices indicate a desire for personal connections, vibrant cultures and nature escapes, reflective of the most popular types of solo trips: reconnecting with loved ones, visiting friends and family (55%) beach holidays (39%), culture and history (39%) city breaks (34%), and visting countryside and rural areas (34%). This echoes the cultural shift towards experience-led holidays, where travel is seen as a form of informal education and cultural immersion, especially for those choosing to explore the world solo in pursuit of personal enrichment.

Overall, the white paper reveals a strong preference for destinations in UK, US and New Zealand as the top global destinations that Australian travellers would like to head to on a solo trip in the next 12 months.

Top Five Solo Travel Wishlist Destinations (Global) for Australians:

  1. Australia (45%) (domestic travel)
  2. UK (15%)
  3. US (14%)
  4. New Zealand (13%)
  5. Canada (10%)

With so many Australians boasting family connections in the likes of UK, New Zealand and US, it is also no surprise that visiting friends and family surged to the top of the list as a driver for solo travellers.

To reach all of these destinations, solo travellers continue to prioritise affordable air travel options, with almost two-thirds (62%) opting for economy class and two in five (40%) considering affordability as a top factor when choosing an airline. This underscores the importance of value for those navigating the world on their own.
