The Mercure Bangkok Surawong: A Modern Oasis in the Heart of Bangkok

Mercure Bangkok Surawong
Bangkok, Thailand's vibrant capital, is a city that pulses with energy at every corner. From its chaotic street markets to its tranquil temples, from the tantalizing smells of street food to the glittering modern skyline, there's no shortage of things to see and do. But with so much to explore, finding the perfect place to stay can be a challenge. That’s when I discovered the Mercure Bangkok Surawong, a newly opened hotel that promises the best of both worlds: a modern, stylish haven where comfort meets convenience, all nestled right in the heart of this dynamic city.

Having just flown into Bangkok, I was eager to experience all that the city has to offer, but I was equally eager to have a quiet retreat to unwind after the hustle and bustle of the streets. From the moment I stepped into the Mercure Bangkok Surawong, I realized that this hotel would be just the sanctuary I was looking for.

Location: The Perfect Spot for Exploration

Mercure Bangkok Surawong
The Mercure Bangkok Surawong is located in the heart of the city, specifically in the Surawong area. It's a lively and bustling district that perfectly captures the energy of Bangkok. What immediately struck me was the hotel’s central location, which places you in close proximity to some of the city's best-known attractions.

Just a short walk from the hotel, you'll find Silom Road, a major commercial street lined with shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. For those looking to dive into Bangkok's nightlife, the famous Patpong Night Market is just around the corner. This market is an iconic part of the city, known for its vibrant mix of street vendors, bars, and entertainment.

Another plus is the hotel’s proximity to the Chao Phraya River, one of Bangkok’s most famous landmarks. From here, I took a relaxing boat cruise that allowed me to see some of the city’s most famous temples, including Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) and The Grand Palace. For shopping lovers, you're spoiled for choice with major malls like MBK Center, Siam Square, and CentralWorld just a short ride away. Whether you're looking for high-end international brands or local handicrafts, you’ll find it all nearby. The Mercure Bangkok Surawong is within walking distance to Wat Hua Lamphong and Lumphini Park.

Wat Hua Lamphong
The Mercure Bangkok Surawong is also excellently connected in terms of transportation. The Chong Nonsi BTS Station is just a few minutes’ walk away, making it easy to jump on the Skytrain and explore other parts of the city quickly. If you're flying in or out of Bangkok, the MRT (subway) station is close by, which makes the journey to and from the airport a breeze.

Stylish Rooms: A Blend of Modern Comfort and Thai Tradition

After a busy day of sightseeing, stepping into my room at the Mercure Bangkok Surawong was like walking into a peaceful retreat. The hotel offers a range of room options in its 219 rooms, all designed to combine contemporary comfort with traditional Thai charm.

My Guestroom
I stayed in a Deluxe Room on the 18th floor, and it exceeded my expectations. The room was spacious, with a modern décor that incorporated vibrant colors and elegant wooden accents, which reminded me of the traditional Thai style but with a fresh, modern twist. The king-size bed was incredibly comfortable, and the plush linens made it easy to unwind after a day of exploration. I was also pleased with the city view that greeted me from my balcony or through the large windows.

My Guestroom

In-Room Amenities

The room was thoughtfully equipped with everything I could need, including a flat-screen TV with international channels, high-speed Wi-Fi, and a minibar stocked with drinks and snacks. The bathroom was equally impressive, featuring a large rainfall shower, luxurious toiletries, and a sleek vanity. As someone who values comfort and convenience, I appreciated the little touches like the tea and coffee-making facilities and the high-quality linens, which ensured that I felt at home during my stay.

For those staying for longer visits or requiring more space, the hotel also offers Superior Rooms and Privilege Rooms.

Whether you're enjoying a feast of dim sum, savoring freshly roasted meats, or diving into luxurious seafood, Yu Her Bao guarantees an epicurean journey you won’t forget.

Mercure Bangkok Surawong Breakfast
As an all-day dining venue, it served an excellent buffet breakfast, which I found to be the perfect way to start my day. The spread was expansive, featuring freshly baked pastries, a variety of fruits, cereals, and eggs made to order. The highlight, of course, was the selection of traditional Thai dishes like Pad Thai and Tom Yum Goong (spicy shrimp soup), which offered a burst of flavours that reminded me of the incredible street food I had been enjoying in the city.

My Asian Adventure: A Month-Long Journey Through Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia

RV Toum Tiou 11
I recently embarked on an unforgettable four-week journey to three Asian countries, exploring the vibrant cultures, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality of Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

I had a great time in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia during my 4 weeks there. The highlights were staying at several new hotels and going on a Mekong River Cruise on the RV Toum Tiou 11. Over the next few days I will write about the places I visited and the things I saw and did in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Mercure Bangkok Surawong
I started my month long holiday by flying from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport to Bangkok, the capitol city of Thailand. The first leg of the Scoot flight was an overnight flight, departing Sydney at 20.55 and arriving at Singapore Changi Airport at 3:20 in the morning. I then enjoyed the company of other travellers in an airport lounge until boarding my next Scoot flight at 12.55 in the afternoon. (The cast and crew from the TV show Travel Guides were also in the lounge.)

After landing at 15.30 at the Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport it was a short walk to the efficient Airport Rail Link to get a  train to the city. I then changed trains to BTS trains and alighted at a station near the Mercure Bangkok Surawong hotel, where I was staying in for the first few days in Bangkok. I enjoyed my time at this brand new hotel very much, where I indulged in delicious meals and relaxing amenities.

Moxy Bangkok Ratchaprasong
I then stayed at another new hotel, the Moxy Bangkok Ratchaprasong. I enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere of the check-in area, bar, lounge and restaurant on the 9th floor and my room high up on the 24th floor.

Apart from sightseeing, I was Hosted Media at the IT&CM Asia travel conference held at Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld. Here I connected with industry professionals from around the world, savoring local flavors and inspiring talks. On he evening before the conference I was hosted with other delegates at Top Golf Megacity.

Crowne Plaza
For my last nights in Bangkok I stayed at the elegant Crowne Plaza Bangkok Lumpini Park where I enjoyed a comfortable room, refreshing pool, and delectable meals.

It was time to say goodby to Thailand, so I took the train to the Don Mueang International Airport to board my Air Asia flight at 13.40. I arrived at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Saigon Vietnam at 15.20. The public bus took me into the city centre and it was just a short walk to the Sofitel Saigon Plaza hotel where I stayed for several days. It was then time to leave this wonderful luxurious hotel to try a backpackers hostel. At the Sakura Hostel Saigon I enjoyed the company of the other international backpackers staying in Saigon.

Sofitel Saigon Plaza
The highlight of my trip was the eight-day RV Toum Tiou II cruise along the Mekong River from Vietnam to Cambodia. I shared this unforgettable journey with 13 fellow travelers from Australia, Turkey, Switzerland, Vietnam, and Cambodia. I thoroughly enjoyed the various shore excursions, which allowed us to explore many fascinating locations in both countries. On board, the gourmet food was delightful, featuring buffet breakfasts and lunches, as well as four-course evening meals.

Regency Angkor Hotel
After disembarking the cruise ship in Cambodia I stayed at the Regency Angkor Hotel in Siem Reap.

I then took a Giant Ibis bus to Cambodia's capitol city, Phnom Penh where I checked into the Anik Palace Hotel. lt was then another Giant Ibis bus ride back to Saigon, where I boarded my overnight Jetstar flight at 10.40, landing back Sydney arriving at 11.10. It was a wonderful flight, as I slept all the way.

This flight ended my wonderful month long holiday in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. In upcoming articles in The Holiday and Travel Magazine I will delve into the highlights of my journey, sharing insider tips and inspiring stories. Join me as I relive the magic of Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia in The Holiday and Travel Magazine, where I will reflect on the incredible experiences and memories forged during my month-long Asian adventure. If you're interested, please read, and you too may be inspired to go to these Asian countries.
