China recovers its position as top spender in 2023 as Asia and the Pacific reopens to tourism

China has recovered its position as top spender on international tourism in 2023 as Asia and the Pacific consolidates its recovery from the impacts of the pandemic. In 2022, the list of top spenders was headed by the United States. France, Spain and USA took the top spots for most-visited destinations.

Top Tourism Spenders in 2023

Chinese expenditure on travel abroad reached USD 196.5 billion in 2023, ahead of the United States (USD 150 billion), Germany (USD 112 billion), the United Kingdom (USD 110 billion) and France (USD 49 billion). Completing the top ten spenders for 2023 are Canada, Italy, India, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Korea. India jumped to 8th place, from 14th in 2019, confirming the growing importance of the country as a source market, while Italy rose from 10th to 7th position.

Top in arrivals and receipts: France, Spain and USA consolidate their positions

France consolidated its position as the world’s most visited destination in 2023 with 100 million international tourist arrivals. Spain was second with 85 million, followed by the United States (66 million), Italy (57 million) and Türkiye, which closed the top five with 55 million international tourists.

Completing the top ten most visited destinations in 2023 are Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, Greece and Austria. Compared to before the pandemic, Italy, Türkiye, Mexico, Germany and Austria all rose one position, while the United Kingdom rose from 10th to 7th and Greece from 13th to 9th.

On the side on international tourism receipts, the ranking is led by the United States, earning USD 176 billion in 2023, followed by Spain (USD 92 billion), the United Kingdom (USD 74 billion), France (USD 69 billion) and Italy (USD 56 billion).

Following the above, destinations earning the most from international tourism in 2023 include the United Arab Emirates, Türkiye, Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Macao (China), India and Mexico which complete the top 15 list of tourism earners.

Upward movements in the ranking among the top earners include the UK jumping to the 3rd position from 5th pre-pandemic, the United Arab Emirates from 13th to 6th, Türkiye from 12th to 7th, Canada from 15th to 9th, Saudi Arabia from 27th to 12th, and Mexico from 17th to 15th.

Croatia (from 32nd to 25th), Morocco (from 41st to 31st) and the Dominican Republic (43rd to 34th) also moved up in the Top 50 ranking by receipts in 2023, as did Qatar (from 51st to 37th) and Colombia (50th to 44th).
 

Looking ahead to a full recovery globally in 2024

As per the latest World Tourism Barometer, in 2023 international tourist arrivals recovered 89% of 2019 levels and 97% in Q1 2024. UN Tourism’s projection for 2024 points to a full recovery of international tourism with arrivals growing 2% above 2019 levels, backed by strong demand, enhanced air connectivity and the continued recovery of China and other major Asian markets.

Total export revenues from international tourism, including both receipts and passenger transport, reached an estimated USD 1.7 trillion in 2023, about 96% of pre-pandemic levels in real terms. Tourism direct GDP recovered pre-pandemic levels in 2023, reaching an estimated USD 3.3 trillion, equivalent to 3% of global GDP.

New reef campaign launches around the world

LATEST TRENDS AMONG CHINA'S BIGGEST TRAVEL SPENDERS

New research shows Chinese travellers have undergone notable transformations in recent years.

New research has revealed China’s women have become the world’s largest travel spenders and decision makers.

The industry report by FINN Partners in collaboration with luxury travel expo ILTM Asia Pacific, shows China's women are making 70-80 per cent of travel decisions and account for nearly six out of 10 Chinese leisure travellers, following China reclaiming its position as the top spender on international travel.

According to the “China’s Women in Charge” report, Chinese travellers, especially women, have undergone notable transformations in recent years. The typical image of affluent Chinese female travellers shopping at Louis Vuitton in Paris or having a buffet with her multi-generation family has shifted.

While many still hold on to traditional values and strive to harmonise travel with family responsibilities, most Chinese women are harnessing their expanding economic and social influence, using travel as a means of self-discovery, cultural immersion and personal growth.

Regardless of age or other demographics, these women are primarily guided by their own preferences when making travel choices. Their personal opinions carry significantly more weight, even in the context of family holiday planning, neither husband nor children wield as much influence.

There was a very strong desire for solo travel, with 72 per cent of respondents stating that they will maintain or increase solo travel in the future. Additionally, 69 per cent of respondents express a preference for travelling with friends over travelling with family. For some, solo travel is a means to foster independence; while for others, it is a path to self-empowerment.

High-value Chinese females are shifting their focus from domestic travel to exploring further afield, with Australia and New Zealand attracting the highest growth in interest, up 35 per cent.

Nearly 90 per cent of these luxury female travellers are attracted to niche destinations renowned for their natural beauty and landscapes. There is a keen interest in exploring destinations before they gain mainstream popularity. These travellers are also willing to invest in unique local journeys and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Accommodation expectations have also changed - these travellers prefer hotels that offer more than just high star ratings and are looking out for how hotels differentiate themselves from others.

Collaborations with fashion, design, or lifestyle brands for themed accommodations (45 per cent), enhanced room amenities such as spa baths, sleep rituals, etc. (44 per cent), and more integration of local or cultural features in the property (43 per cent) are the most preferred differentiators.

Vietnam to boost golf tourism with Greg Norman’s support

At the Headquarter of the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT), Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, VNAT’s Chairman had a meeting with Mr. Chris Campbell, Senior Vice President of Greg Norman Golf Course Design (GNGCD) on Vietnam golf tourism promotion plan in the coming time.

VNAT’s Chairman Nguyen Trung Khanh addressed at the meeting, that Mr. Greg Norman has taken on the role of Vietnam Tourism Ambassador from October 2018 to October 2021. During this time, Mr. Greg Norman participated in the design of 6 golf courses in Vietnam, including BRG Da Nang Golf Club, The Bluffs Ho Tram, KN Links Cam Ranh, PGA NovaWorld Phan Thiet, Dragon Golf Links Hai Phong and Sonadezi Chau Duc. At the same time, he cooperated with the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism to make a clip promoting Vietnam tourism with the message “A great destination to experience golf” at FLC Ha Long golf course. Last April, VNAT received a proposal from Mr. Greg Norman to be reappointed as Vietnam Tourism Ambassador for the next term.

Recently, golf tourism in Vietnam has been growing strongly. Up to now, Vietnam has 90 golf courses in operation, the number of golf players is also increasing rapidly. The number of international visitors to Vietnam in 2024 is expected to be equal to the number of visitors in 2019. The Northeast Asian market is the main market, accounting for more than 60% of tourists coming to Vietnam to experience golf tourism.

VNAT’s Chairman Nguyen Trung Khanh added many localities have completed planning for 6-10 golf courses. Vietnam has about 120-150 thousand golfers and this sport is also becoming quite popular nationwide. Besides, Vietnam has an ideal geographical location with unique terrain and more than 3,200km of coastline. Earlier, the World Golf Awards crowned Vietnam as “World’s Best Golf Destination” for 3 times in a row. This is the international community’s recognition and love for the potential of golf in Vietnam.

According to the Vietnam Tourism Development Strategy to 2030, golf tourism is identified as one of the main products. Previously, VNAT had a meeting with Performance54 on a golf development plan and bringing LIV Golf to Vietnam. VNAT also plans to organize a Summit of Golf owners and some training programs to improve the quality of golf Caddie staff; Develop a set of national standards for golf course construction for tourists and professional sports golf courses so that localities can have directions for implementation, planning, design and operation.

GNGCD’s Senior Vice President Chris Campbell said, that since his first visit to Vietnam in 2004, he has seen Vietnam’s special potential, not only in terms of golf tourism development potential but also in its beautiful landscape, unique geography and friendly people. Vietnam Tourism Ambassador Greg Norman has a huge love and passion for Vietnam, contributing to promoting the development of golf in Vietnam.

Mr. Chris Campbell highly appreciates the efforts of the Vietnamese Government in building a comprehensive tourism development strategy and believes that Vietnam golf will go further in the international arena and Vietnam golf tourism will become one of the types of tourism favored by tourists around the world.

A new report has identified the latest trends in luxury travel in the Asia Pacific, with Australia the top destination over the next 12 months for 46 per cent of respondents.

Emerging Luxury Travel Trends in Asia Pacific by Marriott International surveyed high-net-worth travellers in Australia, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia and India.

The results revealed gastronomy is an important consideration among luxury travellers, with 88 per cent picking their holiday destination based on discovering a new food or culinary experience, 83 per cent choosing a destination to visit an award-winning restaurant and 35 per cent agreeing they will spend more on unique culinary experiences.

Wellness travel was a rapidly growing sector, particularly among younger travellers, with 86 per cent of those aged 26-34 saying a wellness retreat is a motivating factor to travel this year versus 80 per cent of all respondents.

'Blesisure' travel was also rising, with 73 per cent of affluent travellers mixing leisure travel with business and 25 per cent of Indians combining the two on every trip.

Online travel brand readership hits 2024 peak, as Aussies seek mid-year break

The US presidential debate was a hot topic on news websites and apps during June, as Aussies sought out the latest updates on Donald Trump, Joe Biden and the 2024 US presidential campaign, Ipsos iris data for June has revealed.

While international politics dominated the headlines, other breaking news and sporting events, both locally and globally, also captured Australians’ attention across news websites and apps.

Major stories, including toxic carcinogens in drinking water nationally, NSW’s win in State of Origin Game 2, the disappearance and subsequent discovery of British TV producer Michael Mosely’s body, the lead-up to the UK general election and the Euro Football Championship, had Australians flocking to digital news websites and apps as an essential source for their news.

More than 20.7 million people used a news website or app in June, reaching 96.8% of online Australians aged 14+.

The chart below shows the News brands’ ranking during June 2024 by online audience size.

Ipsos iris, Australia’s digital audience measurement currency endorsed by IAB Australia, showed that overall, 21.4 million Australians aged 14+ used the internet in June, spending an average of 4.5 hours online per day, or almost 135 hours for the month.

Search engines were the most consumed website and app categories in June at 21.3 million, followed by social networking (21.3 million), technology (21.3 million), retail and commerce (21.1 million) and entertainment (21 million).

The end of the financial year sales had Australians searching for bargains, with the automotive category reaching its largest audience number this year at 12.2 million, up by 2% or 276,000 month-on-month.

Key sports events including the men’s T20 Cricket World Cup, rugby league State of Origin, and the Euro 2024 Football Championships, saw consumption of sports websites and apps increase by 3% (+383,000) in June.

Home and property also grew, up 3%, or 452,000, on last month’s figures.

The chilly weather may have driven people inside and onto their devices, with entertainment websites and apps also up significantly in June. The average time spent online for the month was up 8.3%, with Australians consuming a considerable 129 minutes more on average than the previous month.

Travel reaches 2024 peak

In June, the travel category recorded its biggest audience number so far for 2024.

The rise was likely driven by the lead-up to the July school holidays, with many families seeking a mid-year break in the sunshine. End-of-year travel sales may also have contributed to the rise, as Aussies sought to secure a deal on their next holiday.

The largest audience increases month-on-month were tourist information, which jumped by 3.5% to nearly 7.5 million, and hotel, resort and home sharing, which increased by 3.1% to nearly 7.9 million.

Ipsos iris, which officially launched in March 2023, provides accurate data about the 21.4 million Australians aged 14+ who access a wide variety of digital content and services across smartphone, PC/laptop and tablet devices.

Vietnam’s green tourism strategy aims for net zero by 2050

Within the framework of ITE HCMC 2024, the Vietnam Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinated with the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to organize the High-level Tourism Forum “Green Transformation, Net Zero Travel and Tourism – Creating the Future”.

Speaking at the opening of the Forum, Minister Nguyen Van Hung informed that developing green tourism and sustainable tourism is set as an important strategy to enhance the competitiveness of the tourism industry, and at the same time, becomes a premise for the orientation of developing net zero tourism in Vietnam.

Many destinations have shown strong commitment and action in managing and protecting the tourism environment such as Hoi An, Ninh Binh, Khanh Hoa, Ben Tre, Con Dao, Co To, Sa Pa.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, Vice Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee, said Ho Chi Minh City is striving to develop tourism in harmony with the ecological environment and local culture, aiming for sustainable development in terms of economy, culture, and environment.

Ho Chi Minh City is committed to promptly reviewing and perfecting solutions, policy mechanisms and specific action plans to continue effectively implementing the green transformation, aiming for net zero and preserving cultural, historical and natural values.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Chairman of the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism said that at COP26, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh announced a commitment to gradually eliminate coal-fired thermal power by 2040 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 (also known as net zero).

Vietnam is also striving to build a green economy, reduce emissions, and enhance resilience to climate change, actively implementing the “National Strategy on Green Growth for the 2021-2030 period, vision to 2050”.

Developing a sustainable tourism ecosystem, strongly promoting the digital transformation and green transformation programs as stated in Resolution No. 82/NQ-CP of the Government on key tasks and solutions to accelerate recovery and accelerate effective and sustainable tourism development.

According to Mr. So Mara, the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism pointed out that the world is facing an unprecedented environmental crisis, so immediate and resolute actions across all countries are urgently required. Given the importance of tourism in the economy and cultural preservation, reaching the global target of net zero is not only a national issue but also a responsibility of the business community.

Regional NSW extends its lead as Australia’s most popular domestic destination

Regional NSW recorded the highest year-on-year growth in regional Australia during the period and experienced the best post-pandemic recovery.

Regional NSW was Australia’s favourite regional holiday destination in the year ending March 2024, attracting 66 million domestic visitors.

The latest data from Tourism Research Australia (TRA) shows regional NSW also recorded the highest year-on-year growth in regional Australia during the period and experienced the best post-pandemic recovery.

Domestic overnight visitor numbers to regional NSW in the year ending March 2024 were the second highest on record at 27.1 million.

When compared with the closest corresponding period pre-pandemic (year ending March 2020), visitation was up 4.9 per cent. The top three regions were the Hunter at 114.7 per cent of March 2020 results, the South Coast at 113.2 per cent and New England North West at 112.3 per cent.

Domestic overnight visitor growth was up 3.3 per cent year on year for regional NSW. New England North West had the strongest growth (up 16.5 per cent), followed by the Central Coast (11.2 per cent).

Destination NSW Acting CEO Ian Maltman said: “These results confirm regional NSW is leading post-pandemic visitor economy rebound in regional Australia.

“Destination NSW has a laser focus on ensuring the visitor economy continues to grow in regional NSW through its capability-building NSW First industry program, marketing initiatives and vibrant events calendar.”

“NSW is home to Australia’s most diverse landscapes - visitors can drive from the Snowys to the Sapphire Coast in a few hours, experience the vastly different climates of Byron Bay and Broken Hill, the sandstone cliffs of the Blue Mountains to the volcanic rock of The Warrumbungles.

“In addition to its spectacular geography, regional NSW is also home to some of Australia’s most iconic events, ranging from the Tamworth Country Music Festival to the Narooma Oyster Festival and the world’s biggest ute muster in Deniliquin.

“This collision of diverse natural wonders and vibrant culture energises visitors and ensures they return over and over again.”

Regional NSW was also the domestic daytrip capital of Australia in the year ending March 2024, recording 38.9 million domestic daytrips, 84.8 per cent of March 2020 levels.

The top destination for domestic daytrips were the Hunter, which welcomed 7.27 million trips (up 5.3 per cent) and the North Coast, which welcomed 7.25 million trips (up 17.6 per cent).

The North Coast and the Hunter were the top destinations for international visitors to NSW, with 275,400 visits and 156,800 visits respectively.

Regional NSW received 694,400 international visitors who stayed 15.3 million nights and spent an estimated $1.1 billion.

The largest source market for visitors to regional NSW was the United Kingdom (18 per cent), while the fastest-growing source markets for international visitors to regional NSW were India (up 15.8 per cent), the Netherlands (up 4.1 per cent) and Indonesia (up 116.5 per cent).

Rising interest in astro-tourism According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC)

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) as nature-based tourism emerges strongly in a post-COVID-19 world, astro-tourism presents immense opportunities to create positive social, economic and conservation benefits.

WTTC describes astro-tourism as "a form of experiential tourism that encompasses travelling for astronomy related experiences – ranging from night-time star gazing in locations with access to dark skies, observatories or special events like solar eclipse or meteor showers".

McKinsey's 'Now boarding: Faces, places, and trends shaping tourism in 2024' report also identifies astro-tourism as a growing trend.

In the United States, California's Joshua Tree National Park is capitalising on growing interest from stargazers. It achieved International Dark Sky Park status in 2017 and its popularity as a stargazing destination is rising.

Joshua Tree welcomed 3.2 million visitors in 2023, an increase of more than 200,000 from the previous record set in 2021.

Ninh Thuan weaves cultural heritage into transformation of local tourism

The central coastal province of Ninh Thuan is taking measures to make the most of its cultural heritage advantage to attract more tourists.

The central coastal province of Ninh Thuan is taking measures to make the most of its cultural heritage advantage to attract more tourists.

Ninh Thuan is home to two famous national relic sites: Hoa Lai and Po Klong Garai towers, 18 cultural heritage sites, and 52 revolutionary historical sites, communal houses, temples, and shrines ranked at the provincial level.

Notably, Ninh Thuan has the art of “Don Ca Tai Tu” (Amateur Southern Folk Music) recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the "Cham pottery making art" inscribed on the list of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Additionally, the province has four artifacts recognized as National Treasures: Hoa Lai Stele, Relief of King Po Rome, Phuoc Thien Stele, and Statue of King Po Klong Garai.

Ninh Thuan is also home to several unique festivals, such as the Kate Festival, the Ramuwan New Year Celebration of the Cham people, the “Bo Ma” (Farewell to the Dead) of the Raglai ethnic minority group, and the Whale Worship Festival of the coastal communities.

To maximize the value of its cultural heritage, the locality has continuously worked to restore and renovate historical and cultural sites while preserving their unique cultural and artistic values, and connecting these sites into attractive tourism clusters to draw a larger number of visitors.

To meet the increasing demand of visitors for local cultural and product experiences, the local tourism industry has closely collaborated with traditional craft villages, such as Bau Truc Pottery and My Nghiep brocade weaving to develop vibrant and attractive tour packages. This allows visitors to directly observe and learn about the production processes and purchase distinctive handicrafts that reflect the Cham culture.

Recently, the launch of a pedestrian street in Phan Rang - Thap Cham city has brought a "fresh wind" to the local tourism and cultural activities. Featuring a diverse array of cultural and artistic activities from the Cham and Raglai communities, the pedestrian street has become an appealing destination for tourists. It provides opportunities for artists, students, and residents to interact, showcase their talents, and collaboratively preserve and promote the rich traditional cultural values of the ethnic groups.

In its Tourism Development Plan for the 2021-2025 period, with a vision to 2030, Ninh Thuan aims to turn tourism into a key economic sector. The province emphasises the importance of developing cultural tourism associated with the preservation and promotion of heritage values to create new and distinctive products, with a focus on sea tourism and Cham cultural tourism.

According to Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Long Bien, the locality is concentrating on developing and refreshing tourism products, shifting from broad-based growth to a focus on depth, with priority given to high-quality products that strongly reflect local cultural heritage. Consequently, Ninh Thuan is investing in infrastructure and developing tourism products linked to historical and cultural values.

In the first seven months of 2024, the province welcomed approximately 2.62 million tourists, representing a 20.7% increase compared to the same period last year. This included 63,000 international visitors. Social revenue from tourism activities is estimated at 2.96 trillion VND (119.2 million USD), contributing to the province’s economic growth and affirming its status as an attractive cultural tourism destination.
