WTTC to hold Global Summit in March 21’ in Cancun

Cancun in Mexico to host 2021’s world’s first physical/virtual hybrid summit on 23-25 March 2021, showing how the world can get moving again with the latest leading hygiene and safety protocols

The first major conference in the ‘new normal’ of the COVID-19 world will take place in Cancun, Mexico on 23-25 March 2021, hosted by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

WTTC, which represents the global Travel & Tourism private sector, is once again hosting the most influential event in the Travel & Tourism calendar, to help lead the sector into recovery and restore millions of jobs around the world.

The WTTC Global Summit will take place in a hybrid format, observing all health and safety protocols.

The 20th WTTC Global Summit, delayed from Spring 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held in the popular Mexican resort of Cancun, in partnership with the Government of Quintana Roo, from March 23-25.

The hybrid format will include invitations to the live event, with restricted numbers and extensive outdoor sessions to ensure physical distancing.

Those unable to attend will be able to take part virtually, with up to 20,000 online free registrations available, enabling participants to listen to a range of specially invited international guest speakers headlining the event and engage in special breakout sessions.

World-leading hygiene and safety protocols will be in place throughout the Global Summit to ensure the health of every participant at the event, with testing and regular health checks, guided by the very latest medical and scientific advice.

Previous Global Summits have attracted some of the biggest international speakers in the world, including former US Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, former President of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, and former President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso.

During a joint press conference in Mexico City, Gloria Guevara President & CEO of WTTC and the Governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, said that this innovative event will be conducted with responsibility and according to the ‘new normal’, and will become a platform for the recovery of the sector.

The Global Summit will take place at The Moon Palace Convention Centre, and Jose Chapur, President of Palace Resorts Group was also present at the press conference, during which he thanked WTTC and the Government of Quintana Roo for their trust in holding this event at the Moon Palace.

The Palace Resorts Group holds the WTTC Safe Travels stamp and has been conducting the highest standards of hygiene and security since the beginning of the pandemic.

Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Every aspect of the 20th WTTC Global Summit is being explored to ensure it complies with the world’s best available health and hygiene protocols to show with best practice, how major conferences can be held safely and securely in the new normal of the COVID-19 world.

“WTTC wants the Global Summit to learn from the challenges of the pandemic to showcase how we can use this experience to adapt to COVID-19 and lead the global Travel & Tourism sector back to recovery and save millions of jobs - and thousands of business large and small - which have been thrown into turmoil since the beginning of the year.

“The stakes in the Travel & Tourism sector could not be higher, so the WTTC platform provides an essential form for the very highest industry leaders and key government representatives to discuss and take action.

“We must use the Global Summit to establish a consensus on international cooperation and coordination to accelerate the recovery, as well as public/private partnership and restore vital public confidence to travel safely once more. The 2020 Global Summit will benefit and showcase not only Mexico, but the wider regions of the US, Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, Governor of Quintana Roo said: “The WTTC Global Summit in Cancun will be the place where we will discuss the future of tourism in the new world.

“During the Global Summit, we will implement enhanced safety and hygiene protocols such as mask wearing, physical distancing, hygiene and sanitisation, along with fast turnaround testing, all of which will enable us to host a safe large-scale event.

“Today, Cancun Airport operates more than 300 daily flights, and the R rate remains below one.”

WTTC, which will announce its major new initiatives for 2021 during the Summit, has been at the forefront of international efforts to save the Travel & Tourism sector which has ruined tens of thousands of businesses and threatened the jobs of nearly 200 million people employed in the sector globally.

Just last week WTTC offered to work closely with the new incoming US administration to recover international travel through a five-point list of top priorities.

This includes reopening borders, the adoption of a comprehensive and cost-effective global standard testing regime at airports, a commitment to seamless travel, the re-opening of essential ‘air corridors’ to resume key international business travel routes and re-establishing relations with countries around the world to ensure each is ‘open for business’.

Research from the 2019 WTTC Economic Impact Report revealed how Travel & Tourism was responsible for one in 10 jobs (330 million in total), making a 10.3% contribution to global GDP and generating one in four of all new jobs.

Exploration Travel Myanmar launches first virtual tours of UNESCO World heritage Bagan temples

Exploration Travel Myanmar has announced a new tour to visit the UNESCO World heritage temples of Bagan virtually with private, live tours to individual clients.

Exploring Bagan from the safe environment at home, no jet-lag or packing luggage required, no quarantine or vaccinations and LIVE interaction with a professional Myanmar guide to show you around the temples and answer all your questions.

Exploration Travel Myanmar has announced a new tour to visit the UNESCO World heritage temples of Bagan virtually with private, live tours to individual clients. In the first week of operation the company already sold several tours to clients from Tour operators in Germany and the Netherlands and is planning to expand to other tour operators worldwide and other locations in Myanmar.

According to Exploration’s Managing Director, Edwin Briels, the main reason to launch these virtual tours is to “create jobs and income for Bagan based tourist guides who have been deprived for income for many months now”. Overseas Tour operators can book a private tour in Bagan that lasts about 45 minutes, using Zoom software. The guide has a camera with stabiliser, an electric bike and a mobile phone connection and takes the clients through a certain route explaining about the history of Bagan, life style in the village and showing some of the highlight temples like the Ananda and the Dhammayangyi temple. During the whole tour clients can ask the guide to move the camera in any direction, ask questions and have a live virtual tour with a private guide who is the eyes and ears on the ground.

Edwin continues: “as an additional advantage, clients can ask family members or friends to join the tour from the comfort of their own house and enjoy the trip together as we can easily accept a group of 10 persons at the same time”. We have also received requests from clients who visited Bagan in the past and want to re-visit with the same guide so they can also show their family members what they experienced pre-Covid times.

The company has been restructuring and is actively adapting to the new normal since the Myanmar government closed its international airports in April 2020. After the first Covid-19 waive, the company took over Grasshopper Adventures Myanmar aiming to offer more experiences in nature and more active biking, trekking and kayaking tours. It also re-focused on the local Myanmar and expatriates market in Yangon and created new experiences within Yangon division. Recently the company re-opened its sustainable Lalay Lodge in Ngapali beach after successfully passing the Myanmar government Covid-19 safety regulations. Besides that, Exploration Travel is working a lot on creating more awareness on possible experiences in Myanmar with regular articles about travelling in Myanmar in the Myanmar Times and Myanmore Magazine. The aim is to show tour operators and travellers worldwide that Myanmar has so much more to offer then just temples.

Exploration Travel is the first DMC in Myanmar actively offering these virtual tours after having seen the success of similar concepts in Singapore and from the start-up virtualtrips.io which recently received considerable funding. “Just as with our physical tours on the ground, we wanted to make the virtual tours more personalized and therefore we opted for this version for individual clients giving the possibility to ask questions and interact” says Edwin. While it’s a perfect way to get the feeling to be out of your home for a while, it won’t be the same as the real physical touring in Bagan, says Edwin, and it can be used now and in the future as a nice gimmick to get a sense for an area and to get an idea of which place to visit once international travel starts again. It will also be good in the future for clients who can’t physically travel due to health, family or financial restrictions or to visit areas that are currently restricted for foreigner visitors, like for example the temples of Mrauk U in Northern Rakhine state.

BIGGEST INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT IN HISTORY OF NSW NATIONAL PARKS

The NSW Government will invest $257 million to deliver 170 new and improved community infrastructure projects throughout NSW national parks.

The record investment will see the delivery of more than 750km of new and upgraded walking tracks, 33 campground upgrades and 61 new and improved picnic areas.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said: “Not only are our national parks good for the environment and our health and wellbeing, they are good for the health of the economy – injecting around $18 billion into the economy each year and supporting 74,000 direct and indirect jobs.”

Environment Minister Matt Kean said the record funding amount will be delivered over three years, with priority given to projects that benefit the community and boost ecotourism across the state.

“Whether it’s improving accessibility with new walking tracks and trails, or new and improved places to share a picnic with family and friends, we are delivering the single biggest investment in community infrastructure in the history of our national parks.

“Over this summer alone, more than 18.5 million visits are expected in the state’s almost 900 national parks, providing a much-needed boost for nearby small businesses and nature-based tourism operators,” Mr Kean said.

Visitors to all NSW national parks are reminded to check the NPWS Alerts for up-to-date information on any track or precinct closures as well as current COVID-safe requirements.

TCEB’s 5 strategies to boost international exhibitions in 2021

The strategies are planned to support 58 international exhibitions in 2021, which comprise 44 existing shows and 14 new ones.

TCEB aims to be more segmented in its international exhibition promotion in 2021 giving high priority to 12 key industries to strengthen national development and put emphasize on Asian market. It expects to work with 58 potential international exhibitions and generate 23 billion baht revenue for the country’s MICE industry.

Mr. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President, Thailand Convention &; Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization) or TCEB, said TCEB’s international exhibition promotion for 2021 comprises five strategies and focuses on attracting and supporting trade shows in 12 key industries in line with the government's economic policy.

The strategies are planned to support 58 international exhibitions in 2021, which comprise 44 existing shows and 14 new ones. These shows are involved in such key industries as smart electronics, defence industry, digital industry, integrated medical service industry, and biofuel & biochemical industry. It is estimated that these international events will generate 23 billion baht in revenue to the national economy.

TCEB will also support new norm exhibitions to align with new health and safety measures. The mentioned five strategies are specific-approach in terms of the industrial sector, source market and location, while online technology, as accelerated by the pandemic, is one core element.
Asia-centric approach to increase online and offline trade shows. Support packages are developed to attract exhibitors, organisers and visitors from Asian countries to maintain Thailand's position as a centre of international exhibitions in Asia.
Attracting new shows and clustering events, such as conventions and festivals whose content is aligned with the shows
Creating opportunities in the potential regions, for example, Thailand LOG-IN Events planned for Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).
Collaborating with government agencies to promote large-scale trade shows and conventions under "One Ministry, One Expo" concept.
Promoting innovation and technology to enhance visitors' experience through an online platform, create business opportunities, and lower physical touching points at the shows.

Thai organisers are ready to collaborate with TCEB in driving the exhibition industry. They have been employing online technology to create business momentum during the pandemic and maximise it more in 2021.

Mr. Sanchai Noombunnam, Deputy Managing Director, Informa Markets (Thailand), said that Informa Markets has been utilising digital technology, such as a webinar, to promote new normal exhibitions that adhere to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Public relations have also been conducted via online channels, including Facebook, e-newsletter, and LINE OA. The company successfully organised hybrid exhibitions which attracted over 2,500 visitors from various countries, including over 500 online business matchings in several industries.

Mr. Sakchai Pattarapreechakul, President, N.C.C. Exhibition Organizer Co., Ltd. (NEO), viewed that exhibition remains a key mechanism in linking the industries and driving the national economy even during the pandemic. As an international trade show organiser, the company has immersed technology and creativity to enhance the show's potential and unlimited access. "When we are back to normalcy after the pandemic, I am confident that online technology will be a key instrument in creating experiences for trade show participants and it will be an efficient platform for business network and connecting with buyers worldwide."

Mr. Kavin Kittiboonya, Managing Director, Kavin Intertrade Co., Ltd., stated that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company adopted digital technology to serve as a window of opportunity for Thai exhibitors to meet overseas buyers. "In 2021, we will focus on hybrid exhibitions as we foresee that the COVID-19 is likely to continue while it will take time to manufacture an effective vaccine. Therefore, we plan to utilise the digital technology to benefit both international exhibitors interested in expanding in the Thai market but are restricted by the travel ban, and Thai exhibitors wishing to sell overseas.

Despite travel restrictions in 2020, hybrid exhibitions in Thailand generated 15,000 business matchings between Thai and Asian entrepreneurs. Twenty-four TCEB-supported international exhibitions attracted a combination of 133,259 Thai and overseas business people, generating 6,521 million baht in revenue to the country.

Princess Cruises announces Pacific Princess to leave the fleet

Princess Cruises has announced the sale of Pacific Princess to an undisclosed buyer. The sale of the cruise ship is in line with parent company Carnival Corporation’s plan to accelerate the removal of less efficient ships from its fleet.

Pacific Princess first joined the cruise line’s fleet in 2002, and originally entered service in 1999 as R3 for Renaissance Cruises. The boutique-style ship offered an intimate cruising environment, with a total of just 670 passengers, but incorporated many of the dining and entertainment options available on the cruise line’s larger cruise vessels.

Beloved by many loyal Princess guests, Pacific Princess sailed more than 1.6 million nautical miles, 11 World Cruises and offered distinctive itineraries to sought-after destinations all over the world. In fact, The Love Boat’s “Captain Stubing” and Princess Cruises Ambassador Gavin MacLeod was on the ship’s navigation bridge as the ship sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time to kick off the inaugural season sailing to Alaska from San Francisco in May 2003.

“Pacific Princess holds so many memories and cherished experiences to all who sailed upon her,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises president. “Pacific Princess offered a traditional style of cruising to unique destinations. While it’s difficult to say goodbye to our ‘Love Boat,’ our World Cruise and exotic itineraries continue onboard our Medallion Class-enabled Island Princess and Coral Princess, featuring the best Wi-Fi at sea, allowing guests to keep in touch with loved ones and share vacation memories along the way.”

Another historic moment for Pacific Princess was sailing a throwback cruise, recreating the cruise line’s very first itinerary to the iconic Mexican Riviera in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Princess Cruises on December 3, 2015. Attending this special cruise included the main cast of “The Love Boat,” and together with the guests, they celebrated the role the show played in Princess Cruises’ five-decade-long history introducing the cruise line – and cruise vacations – to millions of people around the world.

Guests with bookings will be notified, and along with their travel advisors, will receive information on how to book another Princess Cruise when operations resume. Guests who prefer a refund will be accommodated.

Hanoi supports Binh Dinh in developing night-time business and services

The development of night-time tourism products and services are one of the Hanoi's focuses.

Tourism authorities of Hanoi and Binh Dinh province have exchanged on running night-time tourism products and services on December 23 in Hanoi, as part of the connection and cooperation program between Hanoi and the key economic region of Central Vietnam.

Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Tourism Tran Trung Hieu, said that developing night-time economy has been the focus of the capital city in realizing a prime ministerial decision on this regard.

Night-time economic activities have been thriving in some locations, especially at walking space in Hoan Kiem lake area and its vicinities, Dong Xuan market, and the Old Quarter.

Night-time activities have been efficient, attracting a large number of tourists in Vietnam and from abroad, generating income to the locals and the district revenue. Some Hanoi relics have rolled out night tour programs including Hoa Lo Prison Relic and the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long.

Since 2016, the Hoan Kiem district's authorities have allowed 65-night businesses to stay open until 2 a.m. the next day. The move has proven to be a success, with the number of tourist overnight stays in Hoan Kiem district increasing rapidly, said Deputy Director of the Hoan Kiem district Economic Department Le Hong Hai.

In 2021, the district's authorities will focus on installing more lighting, upgrading cultural and art programs in Hoan Kiem lake area to create a more professional chain of cultural products and services.

Director of the Binh Dinh Tourism Department Nguyen Van Dung said that the province lacks night-time tourism products, so the experiences the Department of Tourism and related agencies of Hanoi shared will help them develop night-time economy.

In addition, Mr. Dung also suggested that provinces and cities should continue cooperating to create new and attractive tourism products, as well as supporting policies for business households in the first phase of implementing the night economic development.

Payments across locations and devices
With Adyen’s technical solution that supports a large variety of currencies and payment methods, Raffles Hotel Singapore will now be able to offer hotel guests and customers options to choose their preferred payment methods. Raffles Spa & Raffles Boutique: With customer demands for contactless payment offerings, Adyen has enabled in-property retail outlets to offer tap-and-go alternatives across more payment options (via card and mobile wallets). This shortens queues in-store as the terminal response times have increased and staff can also take payment terminals to customers around the shop.
E-commerce Platforms: With the rise of payment methods available and increased use of digital options, Raffles Hotel Singapore has implemented Adyen’s e-commerce platforms to extend its sales channels online for retail as well as food and beverage offerings. Additionally, online sales options will also be made available for special occasions such as Mid-Autumn Festival, Diwali, Christmas and Chinese New Year.

IAAPA Expo Asia 2021 moves to Shanghai, China August 10-13

This year’s Expo will begin with a full conference day on Tuesday, Aug. 10, followed by three days of programming featuring a dynamic tradeshow floor, additional education programs, exclusive special events and more August 11-13.

IAAPA, the global association for the attractions industry, announced IAAPA Expo Asia 2021 will take place in Shanghai, China at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) August 10-13, 2021. Originally planned to occur in Macao, China in June, the relocation and date change are in response to the continued impact the global COVID-19 pandemic, and growing optimism for increased recovery as the year progresses.

“IAAPA’s role has always been to help members meet, do business, and learn from each other. It is more important than ever we provide such opportunities in a safe manner, at the right time, in the right location. After careful review and with significant input from our team, members, exhibitors, and the IAAPA Board of Directors, the decision has been made to relocate IAAPA Expo Asia 2021 to Shanghai, China,” shared Hal McEvoy, President and CEO, IAAPA. “Given the continued uncertainties impacting travel – international and domestic – we believe the relocation and event date change will provide more opportunity for exhibitors and attendees to participate.”

Plans are underway to ensure a smooth transition to the SNIEC. This year’s Expo will begin with a full conference day on Tuesday, Aug. 10, followed by three days of programming featuring a dynamic tradeshow floor, additional education programs, exclusive special events and more August 11-13.

“The health and safety of our members and our team remains our top priority,” McEvoy continued. “While it is still hard to believe we are still working through global effects of the global pandemic, we are encouraged by the news that the initial vaccines are being administered in locations around the world. We know it’s going to take time and the phases of recovery will vary by region, but we are optimistic about the outlook for our industry. During IAAPA Expo Asia we will follow safety guidelines and operational procedures recommended by global and local health authorities, and event industry experts. We look forward to returning to Shanghai for IAAPA Expo Asia, and once again bringing the global attractions industry together.”

Since 1997, IAAPA Expo Asia has been the attractions industry’s premier event in Asia. Current exhibitors contracted for Macao should contact the IAAPA Global Sales Team at ExhibitSales@IAAPA.org to discuss options related to the new event dates and exhibiting in Shanghai. In addition, industry manufacturers, suppliers, and consultants can still book exhibit space for IAAPA Expo Europe 2021 in Barcelona in September and IAAPA Expo 2021 in Orlando in November. Attendee registration for all three Expos will open later this spring.

BUSINESS REGISTRATIONS OPEN FOR DINE & DISCOVER

Eligible dining, arts and tourism businesses across the state can now register to take part in the NSW Government’s major economic stimulus program, Dine & Discover NSW.

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet encouraged businesses to register early so they are prepared when the program goes live in coming months.

“We’ve heard loud and clear just how tough it has been for businesses across NSW. This program will reinvigorate local economies and provide customers with hip pocket relief,” Mr Perrottet said.

Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello said Service NSW is launching a specialised app for participating businesses, so they can scan and track voucher usage over the life of the program.

“After applying online, NSW businesses will be able to track the progress of the application through their MyServiceNSW Business Profile. Business owners will then receive a step-by-step process on how to get ready,” Mr Dominello said.

Businesses will be paid automatically – typically – within five business days for the value of vouchers redeemed.

Residents can download the Service NSW app now in anticipation of the rollout.

Phase one includes a pilot at The Rocks and Broken Hill in early February. The pilot will then be extended to the Northern Beaches, Sydney CBD and Bega Valley Shire Council, which is expected to commence in late February. Statewide rollout is expected to commence in March and run until 30 June 2021.

Every NSW resident aged 18 and over will be eligible for four $25 vouchers worth $100 in total: two $25 vouchers for eating in at restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and clubs from Monday to Thursday, and two $25 vouchers for entertainment and recreation including cultural institutions, live music, and arts venues, available 7 days a week (both streams exclude public holidays).

The vouchers can only be used within COVID-safe registered businesses. For more information on Dine & Discover NSW business registration and eligibility, visit www.nsw.gov.au.

Thrilling experiences in Binh Chau-Ho Coc

Binh Chau- Ho Coc tourist site in Xuyen Moc District, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, offers travelers interesting tourism experiences.

From Ba Ria City, tourists will travel to Phuoc Hai Town on a coastal road boasting a blue sea on one side and a vast primary forest dotted with sand hills on the other side. The landscape also includes lakes offering beautiful white water lilies.

Ho Coc white sand beach stretches over three kilometers with lines of poplars running to the horizon. Both the scene and the sound of sea waves slapping to the shore may be inspiring and uplifting viewers.

Visitors may next take part in outdoor activities such as surfing, jet-skiing, volleyball playing on the beach, etc. Then, take a rest to enjoy fresh seafood and admire the scenery in the thatched huts along the beach.

After Ho Coc Beach, tourists should visit Binh Chau hot mineral stream system in the heart of a Melaleuca forest. Big and small hot mineral water lakes and streams are at 37 to 82 degrees Celsius. They contain minerals believed to be good for health. The location is now a tourist site giving mineral water and mud bath services. Besides, tourists can stroll under the shadowy foliage of age-old Melaleuca trees next to white flowers in full bloom along Suoi Mo Lake. The fragrance from these flowers is surely relaxing.

Don’t forget to taste the local eggs boiled naturally in hot mineral water and enjoy them right on the spot.

Bang Stream, about three kilometers from Binh Chau hot mineral water stream, is part of the Ray River in Dong Nai Province which flows through Binh Chau–Phuoc Buu primary forest. Tourists will be enchanted by the local granite rocks and gorgeous cascades across the stream.

Thrill-seekers can participate in night hunting and stay overnight in thatched houses in the forest. A trekking tour of the forest on ox-wagons is also worth a try.

KEP PROVINCE TO BECOME TOURIST HOTSPOT

The Ministry of Tourism is drafting a master plan for the development of Kep province into a high-end, eco-tourism destination, identifying four major sites and 251 development projects.

Tourism minister Thong Khon presided over a meeting on January 14 to discuss proposals for inclusion in the strategic plan.

During the meeting, Ny Phally – ministry undersecretary of state and director of the secretariat of the inter-ministerial commission – announced that the four primary development areas were Kep town, Ankol beach, the Phnom Vore region, and the province’s archipelago.

Phally said the master plan provides for improvements of the existing Kep beach and development of Angkol beach as a new tourist site.

“Apart from improving these coastal areas, there are many other development projects, including expansion of international sports facilities, construction of a tourist-oriented war museum and organisation of visits to the 13 islands which are rich in biodiversity like corals, sea dolphins, dugong, fish and many other rare species,” he said.

Phally said the master plan will also turn the Sre Ambel salt-field area into an agro-tourism destination with the establishment of a museum introducing the local salt production chain.

He said: “We will also establish minimart, night market and food street, connect waterway tourism from the international port in Kampot [province] to Kep and arrange festivals and other events.”

The inter-ministerial commission outlined nine key strategies in its draft master plan, Phally said.

These strategies include the development of tourism resources in Kep town, investment in development of tourism travel corridors and improving the quality and safety of tourism in the region.

Additionally, provisions aim to develop local human resources for the tourist industry and implement marketing and promotion. Strategies will be created to manage and support tourism development, strengthen supply chains, innovate solutions and strengthen governance for the monitoring and evaluation of progress.

Minister Thong Khon said the commission seeks to make Kep an attractive and competitive luxury destination for regional and international travellers.

He said: “The master plan for the development of tourism in Kep is an important strategic document that can promote tourism in Kep and help restore the industry, during and after the Covid-19 crisis.”

Cambodia Association of Travel Agents president Chhay Sivlin described Kep as one of the country’s potential coastal destinations. Development of the province will create new tourism products, making it more attractive to domestic and international tourists when the pandemic subsides.

“Kep is a rich natural tourist destination with Preng Stream, seafood, salt marshes and mountains. I believe it has great potential to attract tourists,” she said.

Sivlin hopes that the plan to develop Kep into a tourist destination will help revive Cambodia’s tourism sector which, like its counterparts around the world, has been decimated by policy responses to Covid-19.
