Thailand Takes the Spotlight at the 2025 PATA Gold Awards

Honouring a Nation’s Vision for Sustainable Tourism

Thailand has once again stepped into the global tourism spotlight, earning prestigious recognition at the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Awards 2025. Held ahead of the PATA Travel Mart in Bangkok, the awards celebrated standout contributions to sustainability, marketing, and community-based tourism across the Asia-Pacific region. Among the winners were the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)—two key players driving the country’s forward-looking tourism strategy.

Community and Culture at the Heart of DASTA’s Grand Award

DASTA earned one of the event’s highest distinctions: the Grand Award for Sustainability & Social Responsibility. This accolade was awarded for its work on the Ban Na Ton Chan Homestay Community Enterprise, a project that has become a national model for heritage preservation and responsible tourism. Rooted in authentic local engagement, the initiative reflects the power of long-term community collaboration in sustaining culture and livelihoods.

DASTA’s leadership in sustainability didn’t stop there. The organisation collected five additional Gold Awards in the same category, recognising its efforts in climate action, inclusive tourism, youth and women empowerment, and destination resilience. Each award demonstrates how Thailand is fostering tourism models that are equitable, inclusive, and designed to endure.

TAT Wins for Marketing Creativity and Emotional Connection

The Tourism Authority of Thailand was also recognised for its excellence in marketing. TAT took home two Gold Awards in the Marketing category, affirming its role as a leading voice in promoting Thai tourism on the global stage.

The “Love Season” campaign was named Best Integrated Digital Marketing Campaign (Destination). Celebrated for its strategic reach and emotionally driven storytelling, the campaign invited travellers to discover the romantic side of Thailand. TAT’s second win, for Best Travel Photography, was awarded to “The Hidden Romance of Sam Roi Yot”—a visual love letter to one of Thailand’s most peaceful coastal escapes.

Global Recognition for a National Effort

TAT Governor Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool welcomed the recognition with gratitude, noting that it reflects the strength of collaboration and vision across Thailand’s tourism sector. She applauded both her team and DASTA, whose achievements highlight the breadth of innovation in Thai tourism today.

These awards build on Thailand’s growing list of international accolades, including recent wins in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2025. Together, they showcase a national commitment to tourism that balances creativity with care, and growth with responsibility.
Looking Ahead to PATA Travel Mart 2025 in Bangkok

Award winners will be officially honoured at the PATA Gold Awards Gala Dinner on 27 August 2025 during the PATA Travel Mart in Bangkok. Delegates from across the Asia-Pacific region will have a chance to engage with the winning projects, which will be on display throughout the event.

The Taj Mahal Gets a Beauty Boost: Routine Restoration Underway

Taj Mahal
Keeping the Jewel of India Shining Bright

It might sound surprising, but even the Taj Mahal, one of the world’s most iconic structures, needs a little pampering now and then. The gleaming white marble mausoleum, which has captivated visitors for centuries, is undergoing routine restoration to preserve its magnificent beauty.

Conservation efforts at the Taj Mahal have long been a priority, ensuring that this symbol of eternal love continues to shine for generations to come. In fact, the monument has been treated to various forms of care over the years, including an innovative use of Multani mitti (Fuller’s Earth) in the early 2000s. This natural clay proved remarkably effective in restoring the marble’s original brightness by removing pollutants and biological deposits without causing any harm to the stone. Now, as the Taj undergoes another round of repairs, it continues to receive the tender care it deserves.

Restoration Work on the Iconic Dome

The current phase of restoration is focused on the Taj Mahal's main dome and roof. As part of a comprehensive conservation plan spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India, scaffolding is being installed to facilitate delicate stone repairs. These repairs are necessary to address natural wear and tear caused by weather conditions over time.

Despite these preservation efforts, the Taj remains fully accessible to visitors. The restoration work does not interfere with any tours or guided experiences, allowing tourists to continue enjoying the monument in all its grandeur. Although the scaffolding may obscure certain angles for photography, the majestic beauty of the Taj Mahal remains undisturbed.

A Testament to Timeless Love and Craftsmanship

The Taj Mahal's enduring charm lies not only in its beauty but also in its historical significance. This world-renowned monument, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, stands as an architectural masterpiece and a symbol of love. Visitors continue to flock from around the globe to experience its intricate symmetry, breathtaking craftsmanship, and profound emotional resonance.

The ongoing restoration work is a reminder that even the most enduring landmarks need periodic rejuvenation. Just as love requires care and attention, so too does the Taj Mahal, ensuring its radiance remains unblemished for years to come.

Planning Your Visit

If you’ve always dreamed of witnessing the splendor of the Taj Mahal, there’s no better time than now to visit. The monument continues to enchant millions of visitors with its beauty and history, making it one of the must-see destinations on any travel itinerary to India.

Da Nang Sets Its Sights on Luxury Tourism with New Middle East Flight Route

high-spending travelers. Photo by VnExpress/Nguyen Dong
City Gears Up to Attract High-Spending Travelers from the UAE

New Flight Route: A Gateway to Luxury Tourism

Da Nang, Vietnam’s vibrant coastal city, has taken a significant step towards boosting its luxury tourism offerings with the launch of a new flight route connecting Dubai to Da Nang via Bangkok. The route, operated by Emirates Airlines, officially opened on June 2, 2025, and promises to enhance the city’s accessibility to the Middle Eastern market—a region known for its high-spending travelers. With four flights per week, the Dubai-Bangkok-Da Nang route opens up exciting opportunities for the city to tap into the luxury tourism sector and cater to the specific needs of Middle Eastern tourists.
Targeting Halal Tourism and Luxury Travelers

Da Nang has long been known for its picturesque beaches, rich culture, and modern amenities. However, the city’s latest initiative is aimed squarely at attracting the Middle Eastern demographic, which includes some of the world’s most affluent and discerning travelers. As part of its strategy, Da Nang is focusing on providing Halal-friendly services to meet the unique needs of Muslim tourists.

Tan Van Vuong, Deputy Director of Da Nang’s Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, highlighted that the Middle Eastern market is among the top spenders in the global tourism industry. “We are implementing a comprehensive plan to cater to Halal tourists, ensuring Da Nang is well-equipped to welcome them,” he said.

The City's Infrastructure: Ready for Luxury Tourists

Da Nang boasts an impressive tourism infrastructure designed to accommodate high-spending travelers. The city is home to 1,290 lodging establishments with over 46,000 rooms, including 111 four- and five-star hotels. Many of these properties are operated by internationally renowned hospitality brands such as IHG, Accor, and Hilton, ensuring top-tier service and luxurious accommodations.

In addition to upscale hotels and resorts, Da Nang also offers 8,000 food and beverage venues, with 30 Halal-friendly restaurants. These include several Halal-certified eateries, as well as over 20 vegan and vegetarian restaurants catering to the tastes of Middle Eastern and regional tourists.

Cultural Sensitivity and Adaptation for Muslim Tourists

International Terminal. Photo by VnExpress/Nguyen Dong
To ensure that Da Nang is welcoming and culturally sensitive to Middle Eastern tourists, the city has taken several steps to accommodate Muslim customs. Hospitality staff have undergone specialized training on Muslim practices, including greeting protocols and respecting prayer times. Arabic signage has been added in key areas, and multilingual guides are being developed to help visitors navigate the city with ease.

Furthermore, hotels and restaurants are adapting their offerings to cater to Muslim guests. Many now provide Halal-compliant food, alcohol-free rooms, prayer spaces, and amenities such as prayer rugs and Qurans available upon request. These efforts are in line with Da Nang’s commitment to delivering a premium and culturally respectful experience for its guests.

Da Nang’s Strategic Move to Boost International Profile

The addition of the Dubai-Bangkok-Da Nang route is more than just a flight connection—it is a strategic move to boost Da Nang’s profile on the global tourism map. Cao Tri Dung, Chairman of the Da Nang Tourism Association, emphasized the significance of the direct flight for the region. “This new route will enhance connectivity between Da Nang and both the Middle East and Europe, particularly for markets that currently lack direct flight options,” he stated.

By targeting high and ultra-high-income tourists, Da Nang hopes to elevate its status as a luxury destination and establish itself as a key player in the global tourism industry. The direct flight route is expected to attract not only affluent travelers from the UAE but also from surrounding countries in the Middle East and Europe, further increasing Da Nang's international appeal.

Looking to the Future

As Da Nang continues to evolve as a luxury tourism destination, the city is poised for growth. The successful launch of the Dubai-Bangkok-Da Nang flight route is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting chapter for the city. With enhanced connectivity, tailored services, and a focus on high-spending tourists, Da Nang is ready to take its place among the premier luxury destinations in Southeast Asia.

NEW TOOLKIT LAUNCHED TO SUPPORT FIRST NATIONS ENGAGEMENT IN TOURISM

RACV City Club
Connecting Tourism with Culture in a New Way

A groundbreaking initiative is transforming how Australian tourism businesses engage with First Nations communities. The Connecting to Culture Toolkit, recently launched by the Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC), offers a clear and practical pathway for non-First Nations tourism operators to build respectful, meaningful relationships with First Nations people and cultures across Australia.
A Practical Resource for Meaningful Engagement

Developed in partnership with the Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC) and its First Nations Reference Group, the toolkit is designed as an easy-to-use, online resource that supports businesses in their cultural engagement journey. With the backing of the Australian Government, it brings credibility and national significance to a much-needed cultural initiative.

Rather than being a static guide, the toolkit is an interactive tool for self-assessment and growth. Through a short, accessible questionnaire, tourism operators can evaluate their current engagement levels and receive personalised guidance. From here, they are directed to a library of community-endorsed resources tailored to their needs and aspirations.
What Businesses Gain from the Toolkit

The toolkit not only raises awareness but also provides tangible benefits to those in the tourism industry looking to take actionable steps toward cultural respect and reconciliation. These include:
  • An honest reflection on how businesses currently interact with First Nations culture.
  • Clear, practical steps to deepen engagement in culturally appropriate ways.
  • Access to trusted, community-approved learning materials and tools.
  • Stronger, more authentic relationships with First Nations people and organisations.

VTIC’s Acting Chief Executive Chris Porter described the initiative as a timely response to a growing demand for cultural awareness in tourism. “This is more than a guide – it’s a tool for action,” he said. “The Connecting to Culture Toolkit simplifies what can often feel like a complex space and offers a respectful entry point for tourism operators looking to make a genuine impact.”

Empowering Tourism to Play Its Part in Reconciliation

The Connecting to Culture Toolkit recognises the pivotal role tourism plays in shaping public understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture. By equipping businesses with the knowledge and resources needed to engage respectfully, the toolkit becomes a stepping stone toward reconciliation and cultural celebration.

Discover Zambia’s Living Heritage Through Boma Dining at Avani Victoria Falls

As Zambia’s dry season begins and the mist lifts from Victoria Falls, Avani Victoria Falls Resort invites guests to step beyond the waterfall and experience a cultural immersion that leaves a lasting impression. The resort’s signature Boma Dinner offers a powerful journey into the heart of Zambian tradition, blending ancestral flavours, storytelling and music in an unforgettable riverside setting. Whether travelling solo, as a couple or with family, the experience offers a meaningful way to connect with Zambia and create lasting memories.

Taking place every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday night at the resort’s Mukuni Boma restaurant, the open-air experience has become a highlight for guests visiting the UNESCO-listed Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park during Zambia’s prime safari season. As temperatures drop and skies clear, July through October offers ideal conditions for wildlife viewing and reveals the dramatic rock formations behind Victoria Falls’ receding waters - a striking transformation locals sometimes call “the Skeleton of the Falls.”

Set against the banks of the Zambezi River, the Boma Dinner is an invitation to connect with the community. Guests are welcomed with a local brew before being guided through a four-course menu featuring indigenous ingredients and Pan-African staples. From the spicy, orchid-based chikanda to ifisashi - a rich peanut-and-greens stew - each dish reveals the culinary ingenuity passed down through generations.

As lanterns glow and drums begin to beat, the evening unfolds with live storytelling, bush songs and dance by local performers, including the acclaimed Amakhezi troupe. Guests are encouraged to join the dancers or take up the djembe drum themselves, creating a participatory rhythm that breaks down barriers between visitor and host.

The experience taps into a growing global appetite for experiential dining, as travellers seek more meaningful, authentic connections with the places they visit. Whether enjoying the Boma Dinner as part of a family adventure or a solo journey of discovery, guests are invited to engage with Zambia’s cultural heritage in a truly immersive way.

Located just steps from Victoria Falls with unlimited guest access to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Avani Victoria Falls provides a dynamic base for exploration, from wildlife safaris to cultural discovery. With the roar of the falls as a backdrop and tradition served by firelight, the Boma Dinner promises a night of connection, celebration and Zambian soul.

The Family Getaway package at Avani Victoria Falls Resort starts from USD 720 per room, per night, for a family of four sharing an Avani Family Room with daily breakfast included. For couples and solo travellers, rates start from USD 270 per room, per night, inclusive of breakfast. All rates are inclusive of taxes and fees.

Myanmar to Host 2026 Mekong Tourism Forum as Flag Passes from Laos

Symbolic handover marks a new chapter in regional travel collaboration

A Ceremony of Continuity and Connection

The 2025 Mekong Tourism Forum wrapped up with a symbolic and hopeful gesture — the ceremonial handover of the hosting flag from Laos to Myanmar. This gesture officially designated Myanmar as the host nation for the 2026 forum, reaffirming the region’s commitment to unity and shared growth through tourism.

Phonemaly Inthaphome, Director General of the Lao Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, presented the flag to U Maung Maung Kyaw, Director General of Myanmar’s Ministry of Hotels and Tourism. The ceremony was broadcast on Lao national TV, highlighting its significance not only for the tourism industry but for diplomatic and cultural collaboration across the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).

“Travel Together, Grow Together”

Held in Luang Prabang, Laos from June 24 to 27, the 2025 forum convened leaders, tourism professionals, and community representatives under the theme “Travel Together, Grow Together.” The focus was clear: to promote sustainable tourism development built on solidarity, trust, and mutual respect among the six GMS countries — Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Throughout the four-day event, delegates engaged in a dynamic program of high-level conferences, cross-border dialogues, product showcases, and experiential study tours. The aim was to spotlight the unique cultural heritage and natural landscapes of the region while encouraging cooperation between public and private sectors.

Showcasing Northern Laos' Potential

Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed city, served as the ideal setting for the forum. Participants toured nearby destinations, experiencing first-hand the growing appeal of agritourism, community-based travel, and heritage preservation initiatives. Exhibitions presented new tourism products designed to connect travelers with authentic local experiences while promoting sustainable development.

These tours and exhibitions emphasized the role of tourism in enhancing community well-being, particularly in rural and lesser-known areas. As Laos demonstrated, tourism can be a tool for preserving culture, creating jobs, and protecting natural resources — when planned and managed responsibly.

A Regional Effort for Sustainable Growth

In her closing remarks, Phonemaly emphasized the importance of the forum as a platform for building partnerships and setting common goals across the Mekong region. She praised the increasing involvement of both public institutions and private enterprises in shaping the future of tourism, from infrastructure development to service quality and environmental stewardship.

With Myanmar stepping into the spotlight for 2026, expectations are high for continued momentum in the region’s tourism revival and transformation. Despite ongoing global challenges, the Mekong Tourism Forum continues to be a catalyst for inclusive growth, innovation, and shared prosperity.

Looking Ahead to Myanmar 2026
Myanmar’s upcoming role as host signals a new opportunity for the country to reconnect with international tourism stakeholders and highlight its own rich cultural and natural attractions. It will be a moment not just of hospitality, but of regional solidarity — a continuation of the forum’s mission to “travel together” and “grow together.”

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) proudly sponsored the Starlight Children Foundation’s Five Chefs Dinner last Thursday, welcoming five of Melbourne’s top chefs to raise enough funds to grant 29 life-changing Starlight Wishes.

Guests were treated to canapes by MCEC’s Executive Chef, Peter Haycroft, and a five-course degustation with paired wines curated by leading Victorian chefs, including Jacqui Challinor (Nomad), Josep Espuga (pt Leo Estate), Guy Grossi (Grossi), Benjamin Cooper (Chin Chin), and Alejandro Saravia (Victoria by Farmer’s Daughters).

The well-renowned chefs used their signature styles to create a unique menu, taking guests on a culinary journey throughout Victoria by showcasing some of the region’s best produce, including Salt Kitchen charcuterie, Sher Waygu beef, Pt Leo Estate Chardonnay and Brown Brothers Orange, Muscat and Flora.

Inspired by the event’s Imagine theme, MCEC’s Executive Chef Peter Haycroft served up colourful choux pastry puffs filled with Meredith Goat’s Cheese and Melbourne Rooftop Honey.
