Sydney Town Hall’s 19th century Grand Organ has been given a $1.2 million restoration, reviving it to its former glory.
Considered among the world’s top six pipe organs, it is the largest of its type in the world. When it was first installed in the 19th century, Sydney Town Hall’s Grand Organ was the biggest organ ever constructed and was described as the ‘finest organ ever built by an English organ builder’.
City of Sydney has undertaken extensive conservation work to clean, tune and repair the organ for future generations to enjoy.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said, “We are delighted that the quality of sound of our splendid Grand Organ is now as crystal clear as it was when it was first installed in 1890.”
“This refurbishment has placed the organ back to its rightful place as a living, breathing instrument in the heart of our community.”
The work was completed by specialists, from organ building firm, Peter D.G. Jewkes, and accredited organ specialist Dr Kelvin Hastie, an expert in working with nineteenth and early twentieth century organs.
