ASEAN economies poised for robust recovery with 6% real GDP growth in 2021, says GlobalData

Receding daily COVID-19 cases, rollout of vaccines, increased spending by the governments along with easing of monetary restrictions will help revive the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN*) economies in 2021 with their real GDP forecasted to rise by 6%, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Despite the contraction in real GDP in 2020 amid the lockdown restrictions due to the pandemic, ASEAN countries are expected to witness a sharp V-shaped recovery in 2021. From mid-September 2020, most of the ASEAN countries exhibited a declining trend of COVID-19 cases. The fatality rate declined to 2.7% in Indonesia, followed by the Philippines (2.1%), Malaysia (0.4%), Thailand (0.3%), and Singapore (0%) as of February 2021.

Gargi Rao, Economic Research Analyst at GlobalData, says: “Due to the implementation of non-tariff measures on essential goods among the ASEAN nations, trade is expected to increase in 2021. Trade windows are set to open for ASEAN nations with the signing of Regional Comprehensive Economic Cooperation (RCEP) in November 2020, which will further spur economic integration. Furthermore, the continuous support from Australia and New Zealand will help ASEAN nations to construct a comprehensive regional development plan to address the ongoing COVID-19 challenges, and other transboundary issues, thereby posting a sharp recovery in H2 2021.”

The six largest ASEAN nations (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) are expected to witness positive real GDP growth rates in 2021. With continued expansion of trade and gradual recovery in tourism sector and construction activities, Singapore’s GDP growth is forecasted to increase to 5.8% in 2021. Similarly, Malaysia is set to witness a growth of 7.1% in 2021, an uptick from -5.2% in 2020.

GlobalData forecasts Vietnam to be the fastest growing economy with a real GDP growth of 8.5% in 2021. Vietnam’s growing trade with the EU and its robust fiscal policies have helped the economy to witness an uptick in manufacturing and service sectors growth. According to GlobalData, year-on-year (Y-o-Y %) retail trade growth increased from 8.5% in November 2020 to 9.4% in 2020. A strong demand, effective vaccine rollouts and resilient supply chains have put the economy on a faster recovery path.

Ms Rao continues: “The purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for manufacturing was below 50 in April 2020, indicating a steep contraction in economic activities with travel restrictions and lockdowns in place in all major ASEAN nations. Manufacturing PMI for Indonesia contracted to 27.5, followed by Malaysia (31.3) and the Philippines (31.6) in April 2020. The easing of restrictions and resumption of business activities from May 2020 onwards resulted in a gradual recovery of the PMI manufacturing index.

Singapore witnessed an uptick of 52.9 in PMI for manufacturing in January 2021 followed by the Philippines (52.5), Indonesia (52.2) and Vietnam (51.3). With improving health sector, global vaccine rollouts, gradual recovery in global demand and strong output growth, the ASEAN manufacturing sector is set to rebound in 2021.

Ms Rao concludes: “Increasing investment and recognizing open trade are key to put ASEAN economies on a steady growth path, along with effective vaccination for COVID-19 in 2021. An uptick in retail trade and growing demand for e-commerce will bring in new capital to spur growth. The new free trade agreements among ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand will bring in new trade and employment opportunities for 2021 and beyond. The need of the hour is to facilitate business activities through effective cooperation among the ASEAN nations.”

Soto – a popular local soup noodle dish made with hot piping beef broth and spices is widely enjoyed throughout Brunei with its own unique recipes passed down from generation to generation. These soto joints can be found all over the country from home-based restaurants to family-owned commercial establishments. Garnished with different types of meat (tendon, tripe and ox-tongue are a huge delicacy to be had with soto!) and fresh herbs, each person usually has their own unique touch and taste of enjoying this heart-warming bowl, such as with soy sauce, vinegar, lime and homemade chili sauce, or all of it combined.

On that note, we present to you The Basic Bruneian Soto Trail (not an official name) to some of the local favourites around Bandar Seri Begawan! You may think that soto is just, well, soto – but it’s not! Each spot has their own particular way of preparing the special broth and a particular recommendation on what condiment to add into your hearty bowl.

Our first visit was to a well-known family owned restaurant specializing in soto since the 1960s. The brand Soto Hj Tuah is no stranger to locals; started by Hj Tuah Bin Raman in 1964 behind the old Bolkiah Cinema Brunei in the capital, he was known to prepare the broth daily with his signature spices and flavours that have been passed down for 2 generations. Now, 50 years later and with 6 branches divided between his children and grandchildren, the local brand still maintains its unique flavours and spices made fresh daily. They are also popularly known for their ‘gearbox’ soups that range from BND5.00 to BND12.00 depending on the size, and have also expanded their menu to include other local favourites. ‘Gearbox’ is also not really what you think it may be. It’s essentially the knee joint of a cattle and the marrow in the bone is used to flavour the broth. You can find the original Soto Hj Tuah at No. 318, Kampong Layong, Tutong. They are open from Monday to Wednesday and Saturday to Sunday from 8am to 8pm. On Thursdays, they are open from 8am to 6pm and are closed on Fridays. Brunei is known for its beautiful sunsets, especially overlooking the iconic Kampong Ayer – which brings us to our next spot. Not far from the new Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Bridge in the capital, we found a scenic restaurant built on the riverside called Soto Pabo. Here, we enjoyed a hot bowl of noodles served with broth made from the best beef parts handpicked by the owner, with a majestic view of the sunset in the Bruneian mangrove skyline creating the perfect ambience for a sunset dinner to end the day. Best to go around 5:30pm to make it in time for the vibrant sunset and you must also try their ambuyat set for two! Soto Pabo is located at the end of Simpang 222 in Kg Pintu Malim, and can also be accessible by boat from the waterfront or the jetty in town for BND1.00.

Exploring the sights of Kampong Ayer, word of mouth brought us to another local eatery, Rumah Makan Adresto. A short boat trip from the waterfront across the river and a short stroll on the boardwalk took us to a humble establishment adorned with fairy lights and friendly faces well known for their affordable and delicious bowls of soto. They also offer a variety of local favourite and affordable dishes for as low as BND1.00 catering mostly to tourists and locals who wish to enjoy the unique experience of dining in the water village. Rumah Makan Adresto is closed on Saturdays and is open daily from Monday to Friday from 6pm to 10pm and Sundays from 2pm to 10pm. Finishing off our soto trail in the heart of the capital, we went on a short drive across the bridge to discover another local family run soto joint. Started in 1984 with humble beginnings, Soto Rosmini has expanded over the years to opening 3 branches around the country – all serving their specialty soto made with their own fine blend of spices and flavours. The broth is cooked fresh daily from as early as 7am, and they have unique offerings too such as ‘Nasi Goreng Kembayau’ (fried rice cooked with kembayau – a local fruit which looks and tastes like an olive) and Claypot Soto. Bukit Shahbandar Forest Recreational Park, Berakas

Strategically positioned in the heart of Borneo where over 70% of our land is covered in pristine jungle, there are many different hiking trails in Brunei to reset and disconnect from the world whilst exploring and experiencing our blissful nature. We came up with this list of our top 3 hiking trails around the country for you to experience like a local.

Bukit Shahbandar Forest Recreational Park, Berakas
Located 15 kilometres away from the capital, Bukit Shahbandar is one of the locals’ favourite places to hike. Open to the public from 6:00am to 6:00pm daily, one can expect to see many different kinds of wildlife like monkeys at the park too.

With up to 234 hectares of land equipped with playground facilities to keep the children entertained and exercising facilities for light workouts for the less adventurous, Bukit Shahbandar also has a large picturesque pond, creating the perfect backdrop for some peace and quiet and the perfect ambience for a walk within nature. Upon entering the park, you will also see stalls selling fresh coconuts, welcoming and rewarding hikers to replenish before or after journeying through the jungle.

The park has several routes depending on the level of difficulty of hikers, varying between veteran hikers and beginner trekkers. Bukit Shahbandar has 9 hills that have their own unique routes and shortcuts as the map at the entrance shows, and hikers and trekkers alike can plan their routes accordingly based on their endurance and strength before starting their hike. There are multiple checkpoints in the form of huts for those that need to take a breather and enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest. A word of advice: please do not feed the monkeys if you do come across them!

Located in the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, Tasek Lama Recreational Park itself is a mesmerizing park with different trails and activities for all to enjoy. Visitors are welcomed with a beautiful scenery of a flowing creek with trimmed trees that exudes a calming and relaxing ambience.

There are plenty of facilities around like light workout equipments, toilets, benches, a playground, and even a reflexology path. This park is one of the most popular hiking spots for locals due to its accessibility and challenging terrain; creating a challenge for both new and veteran hikers alike.

Before starting, hikers have the option of choosing which trails they are comfortable with; for beginners, the short hike will take around 20 minutes with medium slopes and hills. For much experienced hikers, you can opt for a different trail where you can start by going uphill the concrete road, where at its top is a protected water reservoir and the lookout tower which basically covers the whole capital’s view as far as the eye can see. Upon reaching the top of the hill, hikers have the option to take the trail into the jungle for a hike to Bukit Sarang Helang (Eagle’s Nest). The 50-minute hike to Sarang Helang is steep and challenging, but the view from the top makes the hike worth it especially approaching sundown.

Located 2 hours drive away from the capital in the district of Belait, this famous waterfall trail is located in Labi. Before starting off on this trail, it is advised to notify the Teraja police station as a precautionary measure and to register yourself at the traditional Teraja Longhouse.

The local Iban ethnic community together with the local tourism agency has dedicated to promote eco-tourism of Bukit Teraja, showcasing their many different routes and waterfalls in the area. Hikers are advised to hire a local from the Longhouse as a guide into the rainforest to avoid getting lost in the many trails.

The main attraction in this park is the Wasai Wong Kadir which takes approximately an hour to hike from the Teraja Longhouse. At the end of the trail, hikers get to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Wong Kadir and Teraja Waterfalls and you can also enjoy a quick dip into the lake to cool down from the heat and refresh before heading back.

3 Things to Do while Transiting Through Tutong

Foodventure with Tanda Kasih Restaurant
Take a detour to one of the local favourite eateries in Tutong – Tanda Kasih Restaurant. Located right along the outskirts of Kampong Keriam, you can find the botanical inspired restaurant famously known for their signature chicken rice.

Visit the Mercu Tanda Kenangan (The Keris Monument)
Located not far from the Tutong Municipal Department, this picturesque monument was officiated as the Tutong District’s tribute to His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei’s 58th birthday in 2004.

The monument stands tall with an arch and surrounded by 8 sheathed keris, a local double-edged dagger historically used in combat by male civilians and members of the royal family and as a symbol of power and ethnic pride of the Malay community in the country.

Visit the Warisan Emas Landmark
A landmark monument in Tutong Town provides beautiful backdrops for pictures creating an experience unlike any other. Most of the sculptures symbolize and depict Bruneian culture and tradition, such as a globe showcasing the Brunei map enveloped by the number 60 serving as a tribute to the Sultan of Brunei’s 60th birthday in 2006.

Visitors can also find the “gulingtangan” sculpture spread out across which symbolizes the rich heritage and appreciation for Brunei’s cultural arts. The other replicas of the ‘beduk’, ‘tekiding’, ‘lasok’ and ‘nyiru’ represent the fortification of Islam as the state’s religion and the hardwork the citizens selflessly endured to strive for independence. The Warisan Emas cultural landmark is not to be missed!

1) Thrilling ‘Temuai’ Longboat Ride
In order to get to Ulu Temburong National Park, you will have to use the traditional ‘temuai’ longboats, which are designed specifically to withhold the current of the winding Temburong River. Modern longboats are now equipped with high-powered motor engines, allowing for easy maneuvering going upstream against the current.


The National Park is located upstream from the river, making it an adventure and challenge on its own to get there especially during the rainy or dry season. There are also many areas where cascading water indicates shallow sections of less than a meter deep with huge rocks on the river bed. The temuai drivers are highly skilled and experienced, trained to maneuver through the most difficult of streams even in the dark night. Ulu Mutong Waterfalls, one of the more accessible and exciting waterfalls in the park is a rare sight to behold. The waterfall has two sections; with the upper falls creating a deep, natural pool for swimming in the clear, cold natural water surrounded by the sights and sounds of the forest.

The slightly bigger main section below has a gentler flow is home to Doctor Fish. “Doctor Fish” or garra rufa is a tiny freshwater fish that nibbles the dead skin cells on your feet and legs for a natural fish spa experience. It is one of the few places in the world where you can find this experience directly in the natural environment. A little nerve wrecking initially as the tiny fishes swarm to you in huge numbers the moment you submerge a part of your body in the waters.

LAUNCHING OF BRUNEI GASTRONOMY WEEK

1. The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism launched the Brunei Gastronomy Week on the 19th February 2020 at the Dewan Setia Pahlawan Hall of Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. This is an annual initiative by the the Brunei Tourism Board and Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. This is the 4th Brunei Gastronomy Week organized in conjunction with the 36th National Day celebration. 

2. Officiating the launching of the Brunei Gastronomy Week was the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong. Also present at the official launching ceremony were Foreign Dignitaries, Members of Brunei Tourism Board, Permanent Secretary and Deputy Permanent Secretaries of Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, Restaurants, Hoteliers and Travel Agencies.

 

3. The objective of the event is to celebrate Brunei and create an awareness on the Bruneian Cuisine; to encourage more hotels and restaurants to serve the Bruneian cuisines in a more sophisticated way; to further improve on the taste and elevate the presentation of Bruneian dishes to be served as part of a fine dining experience or at receptions held within or outside the country; to provide a unique Bruneian gastronomical experience to visitors within or outside Brunei. 

PARTICIPANTS OF BRUNEI GASTRONOMY WEEK 2020 

4. The theme for Brunei Gastronomy Week 2020 is “All about Coconuts”. Coconut is an ingredient widely used in Bruneian cuisines such as in our rice, chicken and vegetable dishes. 

5. There are 12 hotels and restaurant companies including the national carrier Royal Brunei Airlines participating in Brunei Gastronomy Week. Throughout the two week period, participating restaurants will be promoting their own signature dishes such as Slow Cooked Beef by Radisson Hotel, Grilled Prawn with Coconut Kerabu by Mulia Hotel and Coconut Salad by Eco Ponies.

7. The event was also followed by an Award Ceremony for the Brunei Gastronomy Week 2019 participants. Awards were presented for Best Taste – The Rizqun International Hotel; Best Presentation – The Horizons Seafood Restaurant; Royal Brunei Catering; Most Creative – The Brunei Hotel; Most Innovative – Radisson Hotel Brunei Darussalam; and Most Wholesome – Eco Ponies Garden. 

8. Chef Rizal from The Rizqun International Hotel stated in interview that “Brunei Gastronomy Week is a great opportunity for the Chefs to produce new menus and use ingredients and methods which may not be known to diners. For a Young Chef, it is also a learning experience to understand traditional recipes and ways of cooking. It allows them to innovate and create new dishes from traditional cuisines and present them in a different manner”.

As students, we are able to showcase our skills and talents based on the dishes that we have chosen to serve”. 

BRUNEI GASTRONOMIC CUISINE – BOOK SOFT LAUNCH

11. The soft launch ‘Brunei Gastronomic Cuisine – Unique Bruneian Flavours’ was also held during the event. The publication was produced by Astera Consultant and Syensai Design & Co supported the Tourism Development Department under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. The book pays homage to the beautiful fare prepared and served over the years in the quest to define Bruneian flavours and refine the art of Bruneian cuisine.

13. Members of the public are encouraged to experience the Brunei Gastronomy from the 23rd February until the 8th March 2020 in participating hotels and restaurants.

The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism has collaborated with the Brunei Hotels Association of Hotels to invite several hotels and restaurants in Brunei Darussalam and Royal Brunei Airlines to participate in this yearly event. The actual event will commence starting from 23rd February to the 8th March 2020 at all the participating hoteliers and restaurants. The target audience predominantly consists of local as well as international visitors who are currently in the country.

Labi Coffee is the First and Only Commercial Coffee Plantation in Brunei

After 40 years as a farmer, Yong Khian Fook decided he wanted to try something new. He began planting 2,000 coffee trees on 2 hectares on his farm in rural Labi, Belait in 2012. Now there are 10,000 coffee trees growing on 8 hectares. 

There is a mix of arabica and robusta coffee trees grown. The coffee trees grow to about 3 to 3.5 m tall. White flowers appear first followed by green berries which turn red when maturing. It takes 2 or 3 years after planting before berries (coffee beans) can be harvested.

It is a long process to get to the point of enjoying a nice cup of coffee. First, he and his team of workers grow the coffee trees with their dark green oval leaves, then pick the fruit (known as cherries) that take about 7-9 months to mature, then peel back the skin to reveal usually 2 flat seeds, known as coffee beans, then they dry the coffee beans, then they peel off the coffee beans silver bean (parchement layer), then they roast the coffee beans

Labi Coffee

Yong Khian Fook is a second generation farmer who looks after Labi Coffee with his family and staff. In the 1990's Labi was famous for growing oranges, His family farm grew 5,000 orange trees. In the early 2000's a virus suddenly hit the crop nationwide, and a ban was placed on planting orange trees. The Fook family had to cut all the orange trees and pulled the roots from the ground. 

Other families started growing vegatables, but Yong started looking for a more valuable, robust and less perishable crop in the long term. He came across the idea of growing coffee trees. By 2012 he had planted 2,000 coffee trees. He hopes to end up with all of his 19 hectare farm growing coffee trees. 

Labi coffee has now made his first commercial sales and is selling to local shops and is export Brunei's first homegrown coffee.

The year’s milestones in Asia travel

With the dawn of a new year just days away we take a look back at the milestones that impacted Asia’s travel trade in 2019.

Brunei was in the news in late March when its ruler announced the ratification of Draconian laws that targeted the LGBT community.

Brunei had happily adopted the inhumane penal code and punishments of British colonial rulers a century earlier, but in recent years it embraced even stricter rules under ‘Sharia’ law.

It prompted a global boycott campaign targeting hotels owned by the royal family. Gathering steam the boycott ultimately forced the country to postpone laws that included stoning for adultery and sodomy.

It is likely that hosting the high profile ASEAN Tourism Forum in January 2020, weighed in prompting Brunei to back-track on introducing the revised laws. The boycott fizzled out, and the promotion of the ASEAN Tourism Forum resumed.

But keep an eye on the tiny nation once the ATF travel extravaganza concludes, and the travel influencers and PR gurus depart for home. Brunei’s extreme interpretation of Sharia law will make a comeback.

A coordinated terror attack that killed 259 people including 45 tourists on Easter Sunday in Colombo Sri Lanka shocked the world.

Sri Lanka suffered decades of violence during a civil war without a single tourist casualty, but the April 2019 the bombing of churches and hotels deliberately targeted tourists. Confidence in Sri Lanka sank to an all-time low and massive holiday cancellations followed plunging hotels and the travel industry into debt and despair.

But Sri Lanka is now experiencing recovery, although possibly not at a rate to eliminate the losses inflicted following the bombings. Promotions are gearing up, and the travel trade in Sri Lanka is now predicting an up-turn in 2020.

An international rescue effort in 2018 that evacuated 11 teenage footballers and their coach from the flooded chambers of Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province, Thailand, caught the world’s attention. Back in July this year the famous cave hit the news once more when it reopened to visitors along with an impressive pavilion honouring the rescue teams and the Thai Navy Seal hero who died during the search of the flooded chambers. Over 1 million tourists have since visited the cave and pavilion.

It remains a dramatic example of what nations can achieve through teamwork and that message should filter through to the travel industry as it heads for 2020. Teamwork across borders is essential for tourism to prosper.

Unfortunately, Thailand has seriously damaged its tourism reputation in other areas during 2019 mainly blamed on the Immigration Bureau for accelerating a campaign called “Bad guys out, good guys in” that failed to differentiate between the two.

One sore point for genuine tourists and long-stay visitors is the requirement that foreigners must report any changes of address for stays of 24 hours or more.

In most cases, hotels report details of foreign guests using a TM30 form, manually or online, but as more visitors book Airbnb or use homestay accommodation, the reporting becomes a hassle for landlords. In some cases, the Airbnb host is an absentee landlord unable or unwilling to comply with the TM30 rule.

If they fail to report the responsibility, then shifts to the tourist. They may face an immigration bureau fine when they leave the country or when visiting the bureau on other business. We should not assume that tourists are immune to the government directive on the TM30.

The reintroduction of strict reporting rules, ignored for 30 years or more, is now a negative issue that generates the most comments. Whatever the Immigration Bureau says to the contrary, it is has become a deterrent that will damage tourism.

Launch of the Brunei-China Year of Tourism 2020

The joint tourism year initiative between Brunei Darussalam and the People’s Republic of China was officially launched in the Brunei capital of Bandar Seri Begawan on Friday 17 January 2020 at the Jerudong International School (JIS) Arts Centre. The event was attended by high-level officials of China and Brunei to mark the start of a one-year event in tourism cooperation.

Xi Jinping, President of China and Sultan Hassanal, His Majesty Sultan of Brunei Darussalam sent congratulatory messages respectively to the Opening Ceremony of the tourism year.

Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China HE Mr Zhang Xu read the congratulatory message from China from President Xi Jinping, where he said: “During the past two years, His Majesty and I successfully exchanged visits, and agreed to upgrade China-Brunei relations to a strategic cooperative partnership.”

In his message, Xi said China and Brunei are friendly neighbours across the sea, and mutually trusted friends and partners. Xi said in the past two years, he and Sultan Hassanal exchanged historic mutual visits and agreed to establish the China-Brunei strategic cooperative partnership. The two countries, he said, had also pledged to be good partners featuring mutual trust in politics, mutual benefit in the economy, mutual understanding in people-to-people and cultural exchanges, tourism cooperation and mutual assistance in multilateral affairs. The year of tourism is as an opportunity to be good friends treating each other with sincerity and good partners seeking common development.

“For friends, what is precious is mutual understanding. Brunei has always been an important link along the ancient maritime Silk Road. It is thanks to this maritime Silk Road that our ancestors started exchanges over 2,000 years ago (in China’s Western Han Dynasty), and our peoples have got to know each other and developed a close bond of friendship,” the President said in his message.

“Many beautiful stories of our exchanges are still being told today. I hope our two sides can take Brunei China Year of Tourism as a great opportunity to increase people-to-people and cultural exchanges as a sincere and good friend and a trusted partner for common development. I wish the 2020 Brunei China Year of Tourism a grand success,” he added.

The Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong read out the congratulatory message from His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

In the message, His Majesty said he was pleased to celebrate the Year of Tourism as it represented a new opportunity for both Brunei and China to further deepen their longstanding, warm and close friendship they had together that was based on the strong foundation of mutual trust, respect and understanding. He said Brunei and China, as strategic cooperative partners, have been continuously expanding new areas of mutually beneficial cooperation.

His Majesty in the message also stated that the tourism industry is an important sector in Brunei Darussalam’s economic diversification efforts. The People’s Republic of China is a valuable tourist market for Brunei Darussalam, which is further enhanced by the increase in connectivity with various cities across China.

Hassanal said he believes that the tourism departments of both countries will make full preparations to ensure a complete success of the year of tourism.

“I am happy that both our officials have made significant preparations to ensure this year-long event is a great success. This will strengthen economic growth, enhance our people-to-people exchanges, and bring mutual benefits to our countries. Brunei Darussalam will be proud to share its diverse cultural and traditional heritage as well as its pristine rainforests rich in flora and fauna that visitors can experience while in Brunei Darussalam,” said His Majesty in the message.

Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador at Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brunei attended the ceremony as the Guest of Honor and announced the opening of the Brunei-China Tourism Year 2020 by the striking of a ceremonial gong.

After the speeches, cultural performances of classical folk tunes and dances by Brunei and China were presented. The performances by China included ta cultural dance from the Hui race, China’s most populous Muslim race, along with traditional Chinese music show ‘Moonlit Night on the Spring River’. Brunei performed folk dances such as the Joget and the Jipin Tar onstage. The performances were organized by the China Arts and Entertainment Group.

Throughout the Year of Tourism, both Brunei and China will host a wide array of activities such as exhibitions, forums, training sessions and world cultural heritage presentations to further enhance cultural and tourism cooperation.

It is hoped that economic growth between Brunei and China will be boosted as a result of the Brunei-China Year of Tourism 2020. Trade ties and relations between the two countries will be strengthened with the offering of opportunities to build wider business and trade connections. The Tourism Year will bring about more people-to-people interactions, cultural exchanges and bilateral collaborations.

The introduction of direct and increased air connectivity between the two countries, such as the newly launched route of Royal Brunei Airlines to Beijing will boost tourist traffic. Yang Berhormat Dato in his speech highlighted the connectivity between Brunei and the China that has expanded with flights to Shanghai, Hong Kong, Changsa, Nanning, Kunming, Hanhgzhou, Haikou and, most recently, Beijing.

According to Brunei's Tourism Development Department, China is one of the top source markets for tourist arrivals for Brunei with a recorded number of 43,000 arrivals from January to July 2019.

In 2018 Brunei received over 65,600 Chinese tourists in 2018, up more than 20 percent compared to 2017.
