Italy in a shoestring: the best ticket deals and free admission to museums and attractions

As living costs rise around the world, many travellers have been busy mastering the art of being frugal – and planning an overseas trip is no exception. But while Italy enjoys a reputation for its great many luxurious experiences and appreciation for the finer things in life, it’s also a country where excellent value can be found around every corner, from places to stay to the things you eat and how you travel.

One of the best ways to save on your travel budget is to seek out free tickets, season tickets or combined tickets that allow access to museums at heavily discounted rates. Here is a guide to getting around Italy's breathtaking museums, all while keeping an eye on your wallet.

By seeking out free tickets, season tickets and combined tickets that allow access to museums at heavily discounted rates: unmissable opportunities for all art and archaeology enthusiasts.

Here is a guide to getting around Italy's breathtaking museum heritage, for a complete immersion in beauty with one eye on your wallet.

The MiBACT initiatives

MiBACT stands for Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali per il Turismo (Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities for Tourism). The Ministry has an ongoing policy of promoting culture, including through reduced entrance fees to museums.

Children under the age of 18 can access all state museums, monuments, galleries and archaeological sites free of charge. All they need to do is show an identity document. Entrance is also free for Italian citizens who are resident abroad. Admission to State Archives and Libraries is free for everyone.

Domenica al Museo (Sunday at the Museum) is a Ministry initiative that offers free admission - for everyone - on the first Sunday of each month from October to March, and on some other specific dates.

To consult the dates with free admission, visit the official website

Milan and Lombardy

In Milan there is a museum that is always free to enter: it is the Hangar Bicocca, a majestic post-industrial hub focusing on contemporary art.

The price of admission to the Gallerie d'Italia, a circuit that in addition to Milan is also to be found in Naples, Turin and Vicenza, is particularly advantageous. The full-price ticket costs only €10, €8 for the over 65s, and is free for the under 18s here too.

If you' re heading to Lombardy for a stay lasting a few days, you may wish to purchase the Abbonamento Musei Lombardia e Valle d’Aosta (Lombardy and Aosta Valley Museums Subscription), a card that allows free access to the museums, royal residences, villas, gardens, towers, permanent collections and exhibitions in Milan, Lombardy and the Valle d'Aosta that are part of the circuit. It is valid for 365 days from the date of purchase. The season ticket (€45) also includes discounts on theatre performances, concerts, festivals and theme parks.

You can find all the details and the list of museums at AbbonamentoMusei website

Turin and Piedmont

If you're planning to visit the magnificent Egyptian Museum in Turin, we recommend you do so on your birthday because you're in for a treat: admission is free.

If you are in a couple, on Valentine's Day you get in 2 for the price of 1. The GAM is particularly inexpensive: full price is €10, but this is reduced to 8 for the over 65s and 18-25 year olds.

Also in Piedmont you can buy the Abbonamento Musei Piemonte e Valle d'Aosta (Piedmont and Aosta Valley Museums Subscription), to enter the circuit's structures free of charge. Rates start from €48.

Venice

The MUVE - Fondazione Musei Civici Venezia (Venice City Museums Foundation) offers themed combined tickets. An example is the Museums of St. Mark's Square, including the Doge's Palace, at €25, €13 for students and over 65s; or the Museums of the Venetian 18th century.

The Venezia Museum Pass, also promoted by the MUVE, gives access to ten museums, where children under six years old always get in free.

Florence

To move around the immense Florentine museum heritage, the Firenze Card is worthwhile, but only if you stay in the city for at least two days. The Card costs €85 and gives access to 75 museums over 72 hours, including the Uffizi Galleries. If, on the other hand, you only want to visit the latter, one of the most important museum centres in the world, be aware that entry also includes a visit to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale and the Museo dell'Opificio delle Pietre Dure. The Uffizi Galleries, Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens package is also very convenient, with prices varying depending on the month.

Rome

An excellent choice is the MIC Card: only €5 for free or reduced access to the Sistema Musei Roma Capitale for 12 months, including the Capitoline Museums and the Ara Pacis Museum, as well as a series of archaeological areas.

If, on the other hand, you are only staying in Rome for a few days, we recommend the RomaPass card, which you can buy from ATAC dealers. You can choose between a 72-hour card at €52, with free entry to the first two sites and the others discounted, or a 48-hour card, which at €32 allows the first entry free and the others at a discount.

On the last Sunday of the month, the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel are open for free.

Naples

The Naples Pass is a convenient and affordable pass. At a cost of €37, with a 3-day validity, you gain access to the city's museums, while with the 7-day pass you also enter the Pompeii and Herculaneum excavations and many of Campania's major institutions.

The Pass also offers discounts in restaurants, hotels and shops, tours and guided visits.

Travelers See Sunny Skies Ahead for Upcoming Trips

According to the latest Longwoods International tracking study of American travelers, earlier concerns about COVID-19, gas prices, inflation and airfares have declined significantly. The percentage of travelers who report that COVID-19, gas prices, inflation and airfares will greatly impact their travel plans in the next six months are all at their lowest levels this year – 10% for COVID-19, 20% for gas prices and 22% for inflation and airfares.

“Barring any unanticipated events, we predict holiday and winter travel will be robust,” said Amir Eylon, President and CEO of Longwoods International. “Traveler sentiment is at its most positive level since the beginning of the pandemic.” Forty-nine percent of travelers will be traveling with their spouse or significant other on their upcoming holiday trips, and 43% will be on the road with their family including children. Seventeen percent will be accompanied by extended family members, and 19% will be traveling with friends.

The survey, supported by Miles Partnership, was fielded October 11, 2023 using a national sample randomly drawn from a consumer panel of 1,000 adults, ages 18 and over. Quotas were used to match Census targets for age, gender, and region to make the survey representative of the U. S.population.

With an ease in design and a definite focus on creating luxurious interiors, the new hotel will offer a tranquil retreat with an essence of opulence. Its ambient lighting presents a perpetual dance between darkness and light, showcasing spectacular tones and textures, with the beauty of The Sebel's artwork echoing louder, and the elegance of its finishing touches radiating brighter.

Charlottesville Virginia Named Wine Region of the Year in Wine Enthusiast's 2023 Wine Star Awards

The Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau (CACVB) is thrilled to announce that the Charlottesville area and the Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA) in Virginia have won Wine Region of the Year in Wine Enthusiast's 2023 Wine Star Awards. The Charlottesville area was just one of five wine regions nominated around the world for this prestigious award and was the only nominee located in North America. Wine Enthusiast's executive media team made its winning selections based on many factors, including impact on consumers and trade in the wine space, company or brand vision, and trendsetting. The Wine Star Awards celebrate the innovation of individuals and entities that have significantly contributed to the success of the wine and alcoholic beverage world.

The region's history with wine dates to the days of Thomas Jefferson, who believed Charlottesville and Albemarle County's terroir to be ideal for growing grapevines. While Jefferson's intuition about the land was correct, the varieties of grapes he chose were not. After several failed grape-growing experiments at Jefferson's mountaintop home of Monticello, the region did not see successful vineyard ventures until the mid-1970s, when winemakers began experimenting with grapes better suited for the land. Since that time, the Monticello Wine Trail was created and has flourished, currently boasting more than 40 vineyards within a 25-mile radius of Charlottesville. The Monticello Wine Trail regularly receives major accolades in the annual Virginia Governor's Cup wine competition and in 2023, won nearly half of all the gold medals awarded.

The CACVB is leveraging this major accomplishment through Historic Vines New Roots, a marketing initiative which tells the story of the region's rich history through the lens of wine. This effort focuses on the destination's acclaimed wineries and strives to make wine more accessible, inclusive, and approachable for everyone. By showcasing the region as a welcoming and inclusive destination for all, the Charlottesville area will continue to attract new audiences and wine lovers for years to come. The CACVB has also unveiled a new tourism video to highlight its distinction as Wine Enthusiast's 2023 Wine Region of the Year.

“Words cannot express my excitement on behalf of our community, our wineries and the CACVB,” said Courtney Cacatian, Executive Director of the CACVB. “I am beyond thrilled that our high-quality wines and our approach of collaboration, inclusivity and welcoming has won us this recognition on a global stage. We look forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world to taste our wine.”

“For more than 40 years it has been the goal of grape growers and winemakers in the Monticello AVA to show the world the quality of wine that we can produce here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains,” said George Hodson, CEO of Veritas Vineyard and Winery. “We are dynamic, creative, cooperative and inclusive and those things have led us to quickly progress in the quality of our winemaking and grape growing. We truly believe that this is just the beginning of the recognition that our grape growers and winemakers deserve. We are grateful for the cooperation and support of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the commitment that we have from the administration and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.”

“A hero cocktail on our new Zephyr Signature Cocktail menu is the Zephyr St Tropez Spritz – a taste of the glamourous French Riviera. Crafted with the richness of charred pineapple rum and the depth of barrel-aged gin, this spritz offers a luxurious twist on a classic. Sparkling rosé wine, fresh basil, and a splash of soda complete the experience, creating a refreshing and sophisticated cocktail that carries you to the sun-kissed shores of St. Tropez.”

To complement its new vibrant cocktail list, Zephyr's summer food menu spotlights Spanish, Italian, and Greek flavours. Nitin Kumar, Food & Beverage Director at Hyatt Regency Sydney says, "Celebrating typically Summer-infused cuisine and culture, Zephyr's food menu is designed to capture the essence of the coastal region and compliments the super yacht inspired décor and ambiance."

Zephyr's DJ will also be spinning tracks on Friday and Saturday evenings to set the summer mood and keep the good times rolling.

A haven for locals and visitors alike, Zephyr Sky Bar provides an elevated experience that marries breathtaking rooftop views with exceptional food and an extensive drinks list. Whether it's an afterwork social drink, an evening with friends or celebrating a special occasion, enjoy a Taste of the Mediterranean at Zephyr this summer.

Lepogo Lodges, in Limpopo Province, is one of Africa’s few entirely non-for-profit safari lodges

Vast, remote and serene, the Lapalala Wilderness awakens the senses with its deep valleys and spectacular cliffs echoing to the sound of tumbling streams. From crystal clear rock pools to wide open plains, this is an area rich in an abundant array of wildlife and largely untouched by man.

Lepogo Lodges consists of 2 separate lodges, both of which can be booked in their entirety. Noka Camp is the first to open and sleeps 12. Melote House will be an exclusive use house, sleeping up to 16 and will open in 2023.

The group is opening its Melote House, its second lodge in January 2024. Melote House is built in tiers to maximise the views over the Lapalala Wilderness, and its design is carbon-neutral and features rammed earth walls built with earth taken out of the hillside it sits on.

Suiting multi- generational family living, the exclusive-use lodge has a main house sleeping 12 and an adjacent separate cottage sleeps four.

Coral Expeditions enters Ecotourism Hall of Fame

Coral Expeditions, Australia's pioneering cruise line, was recently inducted into the Ecotourism Hall of Fame in recognition of two decades of unwavering commitment to advanced and sustainable Ecotourism practices. This achievement coincides with Coral Expeditions' remarkable milestones in 2023 including a celebration of 40 years of operations and completion of 30 years of continuous expedition operations in the Kimberley coast.

Established in 1983, Coral Expeditions chose early on to follow a pathway of responsible and sustainable tourism, with a dedication to preserving the world's most fragile and remote environments and to showing respect to the communities and special places they explore. Since their foundation, Coral Expeditions has been at the forefront of eco-friendly travel, setting benchmarks in sustainable practices and promoting awareness of environmental conservation. They have achieved this by offering guests unforgettable journeys that immerse them in the natural world while promoting and educating about the culture and heritage values of people and place.

This recognition in the Ecotourism Hall of Fame underscores Coral Expeditions' outstanding contribution to responsible travel, and their continuous efforts to protect and sustain the world's most delicate ecosystems.

"It's a great honour for our team. We have been on an incredible journey and are excited to continue our pathway and evolution for many more decades to come" said Managing Director, Mark Fifield. "We take our Ecotourism responsibilities very seriously and strive to continuously improve and to create a high value experience for both our guests and the communities we explore. This is another area where we are leading the cruise industry, with practices and credentials proven over a sustained period".

Ecotourism Australia CEO Ms Elissa Keenan congratulated Coral Expeditions, along with another 12 operators for their outstanding efforts over a significant period. “Our new Hall of Fame entrants have been ECO Certified for more than twenty years and are among Australia's first sustainable tourism innovators. They join 50 operators who been awarded Hall of Fame status since 1997. These are the pioneers” Ms Keenan said.

“With travellers increasingly seeking transformative and sustainable experiences that make a difference, these operators are at the forefront of world-class sustainability leadership.

Ecotourism Australia's ECO Certification program standard is recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The certification not only provides operators with key business development tools and equips them to champion their dedication to sustainability in tourism, but it ensures continuous accountability towards long-term sustainability goals. All operators are audited at regular intervals in what is a robust and highly credible program.

Coral Expeditions and their guests actively engage in a diverse range of best practice business processes and various conservation and community minded initiatives including;
  • Emission minimisation and reduction practices across their 3-vessel fleet
  • Undertaking environmental impact assessment in partnership with environmental authorities managing sensitive heritage areas
  • Developing industry leading health protocols in partnership with authorities and leading the cruise industry back to operation during the Covid pandemic
  • An Australian regional procurement policy and ongoing sourcing of fair-trade suppliers
  • Reduction in use of plastics across fleet operations
  • Partnership with Great Barrier Reef Marine Authority programs such as Eye on the Reef, Reef Guardians, Master Reef Guides and COTS management
  • Founding partnership with the “Forever Reef” coral biobank project supported through a pioneering Citizen Science program
