Opening of KAI Yufuin in Oita Prefecture on August 3, 2022

  • A hot spring ryokan with a sculpted landscape painted with nature’s brush

Hoshino Resorts KAI Yufuin will be the 20th property operated by Hoshino Resorts under the hot spring ryokan brand, KAI, and is scheduled to open on 3 August 2022. It will be the fourth property in Kyushu, following KAI Aso and KAI Beppu in Oita Prefecture and KAI Kirishima in Kagoshima Prefecture. Its concept is a hot spring ryokan with a sculpted landscape painted with nature’s brush, where the cascading rice terraces with Mount Yufu as a dramatic backdrop can be captured. Relax at this hot spring ryokan where the change in season can be felt through the change in the appearance of the views of the rice terraces.

About KAI Yufuin
Nestled in a quiet location surrounded by the nature of Mt. Yufu, this is a hot spring ryokan where the seasonal scenery of cascading rice terraces can be enjoyed. For example, the reflection of the clear blue sky on the water before planting rice, the fresh green leaves just after planting, the golden color of the ear of rice that spreads, and the rice straw in late autumn, etc. KAI Yufuin, built around the rice terraces was designed by Kengo Kuma, following KAI Beppu. A relaxing hot spring stay can be enjoyed as one feels the charms of Yufuin such as its rich nature and rural village landscapes.

Characteristics of KAI Yufuin
Characteristic 1) Views of cascading rice terraces with the change in season
Before the rice planting in spring, the rice terraces are filled with water, where the clear blue sky and the surrounding landscape are reflected on its surface. After rice planting, the fresh green of young plants spreads, and in the summer, the grown rice moves with the wind, producing a refreshing tone. In autumn, the ears of rice grow in abundance, turning rice terraces into gold. The landscape of rice terraces with rice straws after harvest is a familiar scene of Yufuin in winter. Guests can also enjoy a mystical landscape view of the rice terrace surrounded by the morning mist from autumn through winter. There is a terrace within the premise where guests look out into the rice terraces and feel the change in season.

Characteristic 2) KAI Signature Rooms
KAI signature rooms are unique to the KAI brand, where regional culture can be appreciated from within the guest rooms. KAI Yufuin will have 6 room types, where all are signature rooms. One characteristic is the inclusion of a ceiling light that was inspired by firefly baskets, which were once used as sources of light by keeping fireflies in straw baskets. The lighting in the room uses rare shichito matgrass which is grown in the Kunisaki Peninsula of Oita Prefecture, and its unique texture and light aroma can be enjoyed in the rooms. Moreover, Oita Prefecture produces the largest amount of giant timber bamboo in Japan, and bamboo crafts made from these bamboo materials are famous as traditional crafts. The bamboo is used for the headboards and sofa in the rooms for guests to be in close proximity to the traditional crafts and culture of this region.

Characteristic 3) KAI Local flavors – Kaiseki course to enjoy nature’s blessing from the mountains
Kaiseki dinner course that incorporates local food culture is served in a semi-private dining room. The meal makes use of nature’s blessings from the mountains such that for starters, wild boar meat and shitake mushroom pate sandwiched in monaka wafer is served along with watercress salad with a dressing of kabosu citrus, a signature agricultural product of Oita Prefecture. For the special kaiseki course, shabu-shabu style hot pot of thinly sliced beef, wild boar meat, deer meat, and bear meat using can be enjoyed. VINES, WHALES AND COSY COASTAL STAYS: ESCAPE TO A WINTER WONDERLAND IN THE SHOALHAVEN

From once-in-a-lifetime encounters swimming with majestic humpback whales, to award-winning winery adventures, and cosy accommodation with in-house fine dining, Shoalhaven is the ultimate destination for travellers looking for a unique escape this winter. Just two hours from Sydney and Canberra!

From May to November each year, the Shoalhaven coast comes alive with the annual whale migration. The Shoalhaven, with its restful bays is a favoured spot for whales and their calves to take a break as they travel along the ‘Humpback Highway’, making the Shoalhaven one of the best spots for a guaranteed sighting or up-close encounter.

Book a whale watching eco-cruise with Jervis Bay Wild or Dolphin Watch to get up close with humpback whales, or try a ‘Swim with the Whales’ experience with Dive Jervis Bay or Woebegone Freedive, two of only a few licensed to do so in Australia. A unique way to have an in-water experience with the humpbacks. Travellers who have embarked on a swim with whales’ experience have described it as ‘life-changing’ and ‘unforgettable’ with curious whales often coming over for a closer look at swimmers; and with small capacity charters, it is a boutique and intimate experience you’re not soon to forget.

“Shoalhaven has some of the best whale watching experiences along the east coast, with a season that lasts from May to November. There is a huge variety of experiences including eco cruises inside Jervis Bay along white sand beaches and in calm, clear waters. Pair that with the rugged coastline combined with the green rolling hills of the south coast and nine cellar doors make for an excellent cosy stay,” said Coralie Bell, Tourism Manager, Shoalhaven City Council.

For the lovers of wine, the Shoalhaven's temperate climate and lush soil produces some of the world's most highly acclaimed drops. The region is home to nine cellars doors including award-winning Silos Estate, Mountain Ridge Wines, Coolangatta Estate, and Cupitt’s Estate. Those looking for something unique can choose from a range of activities and locations including High Tea in a giant teacup to horseback rides through the vines, meeting miniature animals as you sip and perching up with a wine upon a hill overlooking 360 views of the Shoalhaven River or Kangaroo Valley escarpment.

Brett Richardson, President, Shoalhaven Wine Coast says: “The Shoalhaven Wine Coast is now a well-established wine region that offers visitors a diverse range of delicious award winning wines, premium dining options and unique visitor experiences. The wineries in our region offer everything from cellar door tastings to fine dining, boutique accommodation and high teas; fromageries and breweries; historic buildings and the most amazing views you can imagine".

The winter weather makes you want to savour mouthwatering local produce in relaxing and cosy surrounds which is available at one of the Shoalhaven’s many opulent dine-in accommodation offerings. From luxury accommodation pods and a farm to table menu at Cupitt’s Estate; pair an overnight stay with ocean view rooms and fine dining at Bannisters Pavilion or Bannister’s By the Sea featuring Rick Stein’s award-winning seafood restaurant; enjoy the rustic beauty of Mountain Ridge Wines family run farm-stay and locally sourced menu featuring monthly market dinners; unique outdoor safari tents and a three course bush tucker meal await at Paperbark Camp; sustainable gourmet eats and a coastal view at Bangalay Dining and Villas on Seven Mile Beach; and casual dining meets charming 18th century accommodation at Coolangatta Estate.

Your next cosy escape awaits on the South Coast, just two hours from Sydney and Canberra.

Azerai Welcomes Back Overseas Visitors to Vietnam with Exclusive New Offerings

Azerai Ke Ga Bay launched2020 as the
brand's first oceanfront resort.
As Vietnam lifts the last of its travel restrictions for international visitors, one of Southeast Asia’s most ambitious new luxury hotel groups is rolling out a welcome mat that leads to new accommodation, pursuits and packages.

Vietnam announced the end of travel restrictions on March 16 after being closed for two years due to COVID-19. International visitors now only need to present a negative RT-PCR issued within 72 hours before departure for Vietnam or a negative rapid antigen test within 24 hours of departure and certified by a competent authority in the issuing country.

Azerai Ke Ga Bay, an elegant and secluded oceanfront retreat in southeastern Vietnam, launched in November 2020 while the country’s borders were closed due to the pandemic.

Now that Vietnam has announced the end of quarantine and other restrictions, overseas visitors can experience the 46-key resort and its pristine five-kilometer white sand beach for the first time. Azerai Ke Ga Bay is located 180 kilometers east of Ho Chi Minh City and features a mix of contemporary suites and private-pool suites set amid lush gardens.

All three of Azerai Resorts’ properties in Vietnam—the others include Azerai Can Tho in the Mekong Delta and Azerai La Residence, Hue in the former imperial capital—have rolled out special offerings that cater to travelers’ renewed desire for privacy, exclusivity and space.

The properties have also each unveiled a suite of unique experiences to explore the local surroundings and be more fully immersed in the culture.

Azerai Can Tho earlier this year introduced one- and two-bedroom private pool villas to complement the resort’s existing three-, four- and five-bedroom villas, offering spacious and private new accommodation options for groups of all sizes, from couples to extended families.

The villas range from 636sqm (Pool Villas) to 784sqm (River Pool Villa) to an expansive 1,583 sqm (Mekong Pool Villa) and include dedicated villa hosts who can help to personalize the guest experience. And, of course, villa guests have access to all of the resort’s world-class amenities and culinary offerings, in addition to private luxury boat cruises in the Mekong Delta, lavish picnics under the resort’s mature banyan trees and other local excursions and activities.

Azerai La Residence, Hue debuted an elegant 55-foot (17-meter) cruise boat in 2021, offering guests one of the most stylish and sophisticated ways to experience the Perfume River in central Vietnam. With its classic hardwood trim and bright red accents, as well as spacious private lounge areas in the front and back, the new boat provides a stark contrast to the crowded and noisy dragon boats so commonly seen in Hue.

Azerai Can Tho introduced 1- and 2-bedroom
private pool villas earlier this year.
The new vessel, locally built, accommodates up to 16 passengers and embarks on three types of excursions: an afternoon tea cruise, a sunset cocktail cruise and a dinner cruise. The covered middle section of the boat serves as a dining room by night and sightseeing deck by day.

For more information on applying for an e-visa visit https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/. Citizens of 13 countries qualify for visa exemptions and can visit for up to 15 days regardless of passport type and entry purpose.

The latest conditions for entry into Vietnam should be confirmed with the nearest Vietnamese consulate and/or through a booking agent to ensure compatibility.

ABOUT AZERAI RESORTS
Azerai is a new story and brand of resorts offering guests simple elegance, refined design, and discreet and attentive service in places of unique beauty and cultural interest. The brand was formed by hotelier Adrian Zecha, and the name is derived from Zecha’s initials and the latter part of a Persian word, caravanserai, which references the storied old inns of the Middle East.

5 Ways to spoil mum while you're on a bareboat charter

Mother's Day is just around the corner. For those who don't know, like the husband of the person writing this article, it's Sunday the 8th of May!

But who needs a day when every holiday, especially something as unique as a bareboat holiday, is an opportunity to spoil Mum.

Add some special touches to your bareboat charter with these simple ideas:

1 - Order a welcome seafood platter and bubbles through a local provisioning company
2 - Find a secluded beach, pack a book and picnic, taking it ashore where mum can have some "me time" in paradise

“Audiences will feel energised and invigorated by a number of festival firsts. This includes the longest ever continuous Light Walk winding all the way from the Sydney Opera House to Central Station, the Vivid Sydney Dinner, Vivid Sydney Supper Club and more, as well as all the innovative light-art installations, projections, eclectic music performances, and thought-provoking talks we all know and love.

“Vivid Sydney is an open invitation for Sydneysiders and visitors from Australia and the world, to come and experience Sydney at its creative best after dark. The 2022 festival has been two years in the making and is not to be missed,” Mr Ayres said.

Festival Director Gill Minervini, who will deliver her first Vivid Sydney in 2022, said this year's program captures the essence of Sydney’s soul, exploring what makes the city so unique. “Vivid Sydney tells a compelling story of creativity, innovation, and technology through light, music, and ideas that is distinguishably Sydney, yet authentically universal. International diving locations to tick off every bucket list

(Credit: PADI)
With borders are now well and truly open, and Aussies finally thinking about travel again, world leaders in diving training, PADI are calling on locals to visit their list of must-see diving sites across the globe.

From the pristine, rainbow painted reefs of the Fijian Islands, through to deep-water, cave-filled waters of Mexico, PADI’s ‘Bucket List’ collection of diverse international dive locations promises eye-capturing moments for any appetite – and includes options suitable for all levels and abilities!

As the colder weather nears for Australia, this could be the perfect time to think about how you can escape to warmer water this Winter for the ultimate solo-trip, couples getaway or family holiday.

1. Fiji and the Bahamas in April
Fiji and the Bahamas have great visibility and exciting marine animal action in their mild waters in April.

Bega Lagoon, one of 333 Fijian islands, is a shark haven where bull sharks, whitetip reef sharks, blacktip reef sharks, nurse sharks, and tiger sharks gather in mass numbers among the vibrant hues of healthy coral. The ‘soft coral’ capital of the world,

Fiji’s pristine reefs, including the famous dive location Rainbow Reef, are frequently visited by blue ribbon eels, manta rays, bumphead parrotfish and pilot whales.

A recent study of over 3000 shark dives in Fiji’s Shark Reef Marine Reserve, located in the Bega Channel off the southern coast of Viti Levu, found that bull sharks form tight friendships. Look out for a pair of BFFs!

Book a dive experience in Fiji at 42 PADI Dive Centres.

The Bahamas in the Caribbean is home to some of world’s most spectacular mega-fauna at its trifecta of popular destinations – Bimini, Gran Bahamas, and Tiger Beach.

Visiting Bimini is to travel back in time to a place before commercial development; where dives happen with bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, dolphin pods and schools of eagle rays. Large schools of colourful fish swarm the artificial shipwreck reefs at Honeymoon Beach.

Grand Bahamas has a larger island vibe with incredible shark dives, gorgeous coral structures, turtles by the dozens and plenty of reef fish. There’s also a freshwater cavern and cave system that is still being explored.

The most spectacular tiger shark gatherings and greatest shark diving in the world happens at Tiger Beach. Tiger, lemon, hammerhead and whitetip reef sharks are abundant in crystal-clear azure waters topped only in visibility by an aquarium!

A Bahamas diving experience can be booked with 19 PADI Dive Centres.

2. Galapagos Islands, Ecquador in May

The Galapagos off the coast of Equador is teeming with large schools of hammerhead sharks and manta rays, as well as sea horses, turtles, penguins, sea lions and marine iguanas, especially in May, when the water is calmer, warmer and clearer.

The Ecuadorian government has established over 60,000+ kilometers of new marine reserves in the Galapagos, and industrial fishing has been banned by Ecuador, Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica, providing an additional 500,000 square kilometers of protected waters for seal life. A trip here 2022 not only helps Ecuador's eco-tourism efforts, but also supports the expansion of protections at this world heritage site.

3. Cozumel, Mexico in June
(Image provided by PADI)
The underwater nirvana of lush coral walls, dramatic caverns and blossoming reefs in Cozumel make it a top place to dive at any time of the year. But the magic happens in June when the official great gathering season begins for groups of up to 30-40 whale sharks and dancing manta rays. Diving with whale sharks is only legal between May to September and divers can have a more intimate experience early in the season.
