Ovolo Sydney Unveils an Exciting New Era of Luxury on Sydney’s Historic Finger Wharf

Ovolo Sydney
Ovolo Sydney had announced an impressive renovation project that was set to transform its Woolloomooloo property and introduce a new chapter for one of Sydney’s most distinctive waterfront hotels.

The major investment had been designed to elevate the guest experience through a combination of sophisticated new design, enhanced accommodation and fresh food and beverage concepts, while continuing to celebrate the character and heritage of the iconic Finger Wharf.

A New Vision for Ovolo Sydney

The renovation had been inspired by the heritage of Woolloomooloo’s historic Finger Wharf, with contemporary design elements carefully incorporated to create a more refined and sophisticated hotel experience.

Ovolo Sydney had been positioned to welcome a new generation of sophisticated and creative travellers, with the renovation reimagining the property while retaining the distinctive personality for which Ovolo had become known.

The hotel’s heritage setting had remained central to its identity. The historic Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf had originally been constructed in the early 20th century and had played an important role in Sydney’s maritime and immigration history before being transformed into a vibrant waterfront precinct.

Reimagined Rooms and Suites

Ovolo Sydney
A key element of the renovation had been the upgrading of guest rooms and suites. The refreshed accommodation had been planned to provide an elevated experience for travellers seeking luxury, comfort and distinctive design in one of Sydney’s most desirable waterfront locations.

Ovolo Sydney had already combined the character of the heritage wharf with contemporary accommodation, including spacious rooms, lofts and suites, with many offering views towards the marina and Sydney skyline.

The refurbishment had taken this foundation further, with every detail considered as part of the hotel's new direction.

New Food and Beverage Experiences

The transformation had also extended beyond accommodation, with a series of new food and beverage offerings planned to launch later in the year.

Food and drink had remained an important part of the Ovolo Sydney experience, with Bar Woolloomooloo providing a relaxed waterfront setting for Australian wines, cocktails and bistro-style dishes.

The new offerings had been intended to complement the hotel's repositioning and create additional reasons for both hotel guests and Sydney locals to visit the historic wharf.

A Prime Sydney Waterfront Location

Ovolo Sydney
Ovolo Sydney’s location had continued to be one of its strongest attractions. Situated at 6 Cowper Wharf Roadway in Woolloomooloo, the hotel had been within easy reach of the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay and the Sydney CBD.

The property had also offered event and corporate facilities, making its new direction relevant to leisure travellers, business visitors and MICE groups seeking a distinctive Sydney venue.

With its historic setting, waterfront atmosphere and ambitious renovation, Ovolo Sydney had been preparing to enter an exciting new phase as a luxury boutique hotel in Woolloomooloo.

Donut King partners with Ovolo Hotels for a donut-themed hotel takeover for National Donut Day

Ovolo Woolloomooloo
Australia’s most iconic donut brand, Donut King, has teamed up with award-winning designer hotel collection, Ovolo Hotels to offer the most unexpected partnership in celebration of National Donut Day and its most popular product - the hot cinnamon donut.

Famous for being the ‘Home of the Hot Cinnamon Donut’, Donut King is taking its cred to the next level and has created a fully immersive hotel takeover including two crave worthy ‘Hot Cinni Suites’ and guest experiences in what gives a whole new meaning to ‘sweet dreams’.

Set in the heritage-listed Woolloomooloo wharf at Ovolo Hotel in Sydney, two elegant suites have been transformed into a cinnamon donut filled premium escape with each room filled with spiced details including shimmers of pinks, cinnamon and sweet pink wall paint, an exclusive Donut King bed design with luxury king sized sheets, plush rugs, cushion fabrics and cinnamon donut themed pop art.

Taking cues from the hot, sweet and spiced flavour of a Donut King hot cinni and Ovolo’s avantgarde approach to hospitality, the in-room guest experience will of course bring sugar highs all for the price of one Donut King hot cinnamon donut.

The ‘Hot Cinni Suite’ in room guest experience includes a cinnamon donut diffuser, cinnamon coloured luxury towels and oversized bathrobes, delicate cinnamon smelling bathroom amenities and pink deco glassware for drinks to re-hydrate after the sugar rush. And it wouldn’t be five-star service without a ‘Press for Hot Cinni Donuts’ exclusive call service.

And it doesn’t stop there, the unexpected duo, Donut King and Ovolo Hotels have also extended the hot cinnamon donut craze to other areas of the hotel for every guest to join in on the celebrations of the hot cinni donut over National Donut Day and all weekend long:
  • The lobby area will be transformed with accents of pink and cinnamon lighting that pay homage to the iconic cinni donut but also to the distinctiveness of Ovolo Hotel’s quirky and friendly hospitality
  • Creation of cinnamon inspired cocktail ‘Cinnitini’ created by Ovolo Sydney’s Mixologist
  • Cinni inspired bar bites take-over including Donut King cinnamon donuts with dulce de leche, cauliflower bites with cinnamon spiced mayo and chicken skewers with cinnamon BBQ sauce
  • Room service donuts available to order free for all hotel guests

“At Donut King, we are famously known as the home of the hot cinnamon donut because when it comes to our cinnamon donuts, we have the best, no question,” said Raquel Hine, Marketing Manager at Donut King.

“We all have memories of family time spent with a Donut King signature cinnamon donut, and millions of Aussies have grown up sharing the experience which is why we set out to hero our number one product in all its glory every year on a huge industry day. We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Ovolo Hotels to create an unmissable and biggest donut experience yet for Australia.”

Ovolo Hotels is equally excited about the partnership. “Partnering with Donut King to offer our guests an undeniably exhilarating and unexpected culinary experience during their stay, is a sweet deal,” said James Clark, General Manager at Ovolo Sydney.

“We’re constantly exploring new experiences for our guests to enhance their stay, and we believe they will absolutely crave and love this limited yet delightfully sweet addition.

Bookable stays are only available for a limited time-period from Friday June 6 to Sunday June 9 and for the first five guests that book the stay. One night per guest, per stay.

First Look at Ovolo South Yarra as It Opens It's Digital Doors

Designer hotel collection, Ovolo Hotels has revealed the first images of its latest hotel, Ovolo South Yarra, which is now live for bookings from 8th April 2021.

Located next to the famed intersection of Toorak Road and Chapel Street in Melbourne's cultural hub of South Yarra, Ovolo South Yarra blends past, present and progressive, as a place where retro chic and pop art collide.

The hotel is home to 123 rooms ranging from micro-hotel rooms to Rockstar Suites named after the era's most iconic, lyrical lovers – take a guess. Taking its design cues from the days of disco, rock gods and retro glamour, the vibe is bold, creative and unpredictable.

“Ovolo South Yarra will set the scene for an extraordinary hotel experience embodying Ovolo's philosophy of connecting with its customers emotionally and will complement the local cultural scene through its art, design and unique restaurant concept,” said Girish Jhunjhnuwala.

Designed with long-term collaborators of Ovolo, award-winning designers Luchetti Krelle, Ovolo South Yarra infuses retro-plush, with accents of chrome and colour, it is a heady mix of 'mod' and retro futurism. The tension between past and future is appropriated with integrated modern art installations and collaborations with local and international artists such as Mr Brainwash, Punk Me Tender, and Australian artist Ben Tankard.

“Retrofuturism explores the themes of tension between past and future and the nostalgia of those eras is appropriated with integrated modern art installations and collaborations with local and international artists, said Rachel Luchetti”

On entry, experience raw brutalism and monolithic forms, such as a domineering concrete reception desk worth the weight of two elephants or 6 tonnes, and a central fireplace with bright orange flue. A vast internal lightwell, admired from the Lobby or internal rooms, serves as the heartbeat of the hotel. The largest lightwell in Australia, showcases a digital art display, a throwback to golden era of 8-bit arcade games, and simplicity of a lower resolution world.

This announcement follows the much awaited reveal of the collaboration with renowned Melbourne chefs Shannon Martinez (Smith & Daughters, Smith & Daughters Deli) and Ian Curley (French Saloon, Kirk's Wine Bar), who will lead Lona Misa an innovative vegan bar and kitchen located in the hotel. A rebellious renaissance from root to stem, sustainably crafted to be shareable, seasonal and flavourful, Latin fare and bistro dining collide against the norms of the classical medley you know of vegan and vegetarian dining.

“Shannon is a real pioneer for plant-based dining. For what she brings to the table, taking on some of Australia's most unconvinced carnivorous chefs, she has set a foundation for vegetarian and plant-based dining to be taken seriously,” said Ian Curley.

“I'm excited about working with Curley. My style could not be more opposite from his! This restaurant is going to be a different take on my food. My flavours, inspiration paired with his polish - a bit of nip-tuck,” says Shannon on working with Ian.

Ovolo is about further enriching guest stays in unconventional ways, but a constant is always the wonderful array of fabulous inclusions called 'The Perks'. When booking direct, guests can savour sundowner drinks at social hour, midnight treats from the minibar, and complimentary breakfast to kickstart your day. Plus get superspeed Wi-Fi, 24-hour gym access and self-service laundry to keep you looking and feeling fresh.

Ovolo South Yarra is located on 234 Toorak Road, South Yarra. It is anything but under-the-radar.

Book now at ovolohotels.com for stays from 8 April 2021, rooms from $279 per night.

“While our international borders remain closed and travel restrictions continue to fluctuate around the country, our cities run the risk of continuing to bear the brunt of this pandemic despite offering so many incredible, safe experiences and being more affordable than ever.”

“As part of this campaign we are calling on Australians to help support their fellow Australians by booking a city escape, which in turn will help to support the thousands of city-based hotels, restaurants, bars, cultural attractions and experiences that rely on tourism for their livelihoods.”

With domestic restrictions lifting, Ovolo are seeing signs of consumer confidence improving and is looking forward welcoming Australians to some of Australia’s best designer hotels as they explore the incredible destinations and tourism experiences that are right on our doorstep. Moments of wonder, inspired interiors and delightful details, await at every destination.

Dash Living, Asia's pre-eminent serviced living community in Hong Kong and Singapore, today announced the launch of two major new Hong Kong projects in Aberdeen and Sheung Wan in collaboration with designer hotel group Ovolo. The two additions to the portfolio demonstrate how Dash Living is developing new multi-property partnerships in the region and how Ovolo Group is adapting to new market conditions .

A total of 135 rooms and suites that form part of a new generation of serviced rental solutions for hyper-mobile millennials will be available for booking. The Aberdeen by Dash Living, soon-to-be converted from Mojo Nomad By Ovolo, offers 79 rooms ranging from studios to executive suites. The 56-room The Sheung Wan By Ovolo, only remaining under Ovolo's management for stays under 7 days, will offer units from studio, one bedroom, to family room options.

Dash Living, founded by serial entrepreneur Aaron Lee in 2014, has now grown to manage and operate over 1,300 units across serviced apartments, co-living homes and hotel rooms across Asia. It has more than 250,000 square feet under its management. As one of the leading regional hospitality groups, it provides more flexibility and a better living experience to people living in or visiting expensive cities in the region, including Hong Kong and Singapore, and more to come.

The Ovolo Group was founded by entrepreneur Girish Jhunjhnuwala and first entered the real estate market in 2002; then further expanded into the hotel industry in 2010. Ovolo Hotels quickly became one of Hong Kong and Australia's most dynamic independent owner operated hospitality firms by providing guests with the best in effortless living across hotels and food and beverage outlets. It owns and operates twelve hotels across Hong Kong, Australia and Bali.

“These two new properties are in superb locations in Hong Kong and means Dash Living is now providing its unique solutions with an even wider coverage in the city,” said Aaron Lee, founder of Dash Living. “We are now in eight locations in Hong Kong, creating an accommodation community with tech, co-working, lifestyle and other benefits.”

Dash Living offers a collection of apartments, co-living homes and hotel rooms across prime areas of Hong Kong, including Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan and Mongkok. The Aberdeen by Dash Living will include communal areas spanning across three floors including a lounge, a living area, a movie-viewing space, a common kitchen, a laundry, a gym and an entertainment terrace perfect for barbecues. The management will be similar to that for a hotel, but for co-living long stays. The Sheung Wan by Ovolo includes a gym and laundry room for residents as well as a thriving authentic Mexican restaurant, Te Quiero Mucho.

Yin Meets Yang, North Meets South to Open Lona Misa

Opening in April 2021, Lona Misa will be South Yarra's newest vegan and vegetarian bar & kitchen. Bringing Lona Misa to life are hospitality legends, and renowned Melbourne chefs Shannon Martinez (Smith & Daughters, Smith & Daughters Deli) and Ian Curley (French Saloon, Kirk's Wine Bar).

In the kitchen, yin meets yang, North meets South, oil meets vinegar. With decades of experience in European fine and bistro dining, Curley along with vegan chef and author Martinez, will curate a heavily vegan and vegetarian menu offering. Lona Misa will be produce led, paying homage to Martinez' Latin roots, and will see the duo collaborate as Creative Culinary Partners.

Enter an all-day venue from café to wine bar, a warm space taking you from lunch to dinner. Home to 90 seats and sustainably crafted to be shareable, seasonal and flavourful, Latin fare and bistro dining collide against the norms of the classical medley you know of vegan and vegetarian dining.

Lona Misa on all front is artfully combined, rich in history, unchartered in territory and designed by award-winning agency, Luchetti Krelle. Located in the new designer hotel, Ovolo South Yarra, on the famed intersection of Toorak Road and Chapel Street in Melbourne's cultural hub, guests of Lona Misa will enjoy a rebellious renaissance from root to stem.

“When approached with the opportunity to continue to work with Ovolo on this new concept in Melbourne, the best person in the country for this I thought would be Shannon” says Ian.

“Shannon is a real pioneer for plant-based dining. For what she brings to the table, taking on some of Australia's most unconvinced carnivorous chefs, she has set a foundation for vegetarian and plant-based dining to be taken seriously.”

“I'm excited about working with Curley. My style could not be more opposite from his! This restaurant is going to be a different take on my food. My flavours, inspiration paired with his polish - a bit of nip-tuck,” says Shannon on working with Ian.

“It's funny, I've known Curley a long time, and we've both always refused to come across the river. Melbourne hospitality will get what I mean when I say he is 100% southside, I'm 100% northside. Finally, the meeting of North and South - it's going to be a something else, a collaboration Melbourne will love.”

Martinez and Curley will oversee the menus across the restaurant and bar, working closely with local farmers and producers, to source all fresh ingredients. The drinks programme, will celebrate the liveliness of La Bamba, liberating libations day to night, accompanied by seasonal cocktails, house made sodas and adventurous wines sourced from some of Australia's most progressive producers, with a strong focus on natural, organic and carbon neutral wines.

Take what you know of vegan and vegetarian dining and think vibrant, loud, and unapologetic.

Lona Misa is located at 230 Toorak Road, within Ovolo South Yarra and will launch in April 2021.

Gaylibi returns to Alibi Bar with a throuple of Queens

Mardi Gras goers rev your engines within Woolloomooloo’s wharf walls on Friday 5 March as plant-based party jewel Alibi Bar spills out onto the streets for the return of Gaylibi. Bursting at the bodice to welcome Mardi Gras goers into their bosom in celebration of pride, protest, passion and diversity, for one spicy night.

Pull up to this pre-Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade party from 3pm to find a throuple of Queens to greet you on arrival in drag, lyrical and liquid form. Sydney drag royalty will rally revellers to legendary lyrical anthems from the greatest queens of all, welcoming you with your complimentary choice of Queentail. Served virgin, redeem your ‘Just The Nip’ dollars at Alibi Bar to turn your Queentail mocktail into a cocktail with Roku Gin or Haku Vodka to accompany you down Alibi’s rainbow runway.

The team of Queens hosting Gaylibi and their Queentail counterparts are:

Vybe
What makes a good time, great? The right Vybe… and this one is EXCEPTIONAL! Named after Sydney’s iconic Queen of the party, Vybe, this little tipple is fully loaded with enough sass to blow your wig off and leave you wanting more.

Candy in colour and zesty in flavour this quaffable concoction of guava, lime and house made lemon is here for a good time, not a long time. Enjoy this Queentail crowned with your choice of Roku Gin or Haku Vodka.

Jacqui St Hyde
Alluring, sweet with a little bite, tantalising and stunning to look at… this little number embodies everything about Sydney’s Drag Enchantress, Jacqui St Hyde. With purple, pink and blue hues, lychee, fresh rose syrup and butterfly pea syrup, house made citrus reduction and fresh lemon. Watch her blossom with force with the addition of a nip of Roku Gin.

Minnie Cooper
Just like its namesake the legendary Sydney Queen, Minnie Cooper, this showstopper will really make your engine purr. The green queen Minnie Cooper serves up a healthy dose of thirst-quenching freshness. Muddled with mint, house made lemon myrtle syrup, kiwi puree and mint bitters. Spiked with your choice of Roku Gin or Haku Vodka.

Set on the edge of Woolloomooloo’s finger wharf thoroughfare, a live DJ will siren Mardi Gras goers into the depths of Alibi Bar with the sounds of Mariah, Tina, Liza, Madonna, Kylie and more.

Come for the glitter. Stay for the party. Live for the Queens.

Ovolo Hotels Engages Community to Bring HK Residents Home with The Ovolo Homecoming Project

Ovolo partners with HK NGOs including Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, The Zubin Foundation and Pathfinders to offer HKD1 per night rooms to those in financial difficulties

Ovolo Hotel is proud to announce the launch of The Ovolo Homecoming Project in partnership with Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and The Zubin Foundation with further support from Pathfinders. Together, the Hong Kong based hotel group and its local partners are working towards bringing stranded Hong Kong residents back home.

Through The Ovolo Homecoming Project, Ovolo Hotels will offer Hong Kong residents with financial difficulties the opportunity to quarantine at Ovolo Southside for the peppercorn rent of HKD$1 per night for the 21-night quarantine period instated by the Hong Kong Government. To begin with, Ovolo Hotels has pledged up to 200 room nights towards this campaign.

Ovolo Hotels has begun vetting applications and is working hand in hand with The Zubin Foundation and Pathfinders to find suitable candidates. The first guest is due to start quarantine at Ovolo Southside on 12th February, with more stays due to be confirmed soon.

Potential candidates for The Ovolo Homecoming Project need to fill out an application form via the Ovolo website, Ovolo Hotels and The Zubin Foundation will then review each applicant with the timeline taking about ten days. Once the candidate is confirmed for the 21-night quarantine stay at Ovolo Southside, they can also apply for help with their travel costs, which will be met in part at a ceiling of $4,000 per person by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.

Girish Jhunjhnuwala, CEO of Ovolo Hotels, states: “The Ovolo Homecoming Project is the first of its kind, and I am very proud to be partnering with the likes of Shalini Mahtani from The Zubin Foundation and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, both very respected organizations in our community, on such a meaningful project. Apart from helping the people of Hong Kong, I am hoping that this project will also set a precedent for other Hong Kong leaders to step forward and give back to the community around them – the community that's given us all so much.”

Shalini Mahtani, Founder and CEO of The Zubin Foundation, adds: “At The Zubin Foundation, we improve the lives of marginalised ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. The poverty rate of ethnic minorities pre-Covid was already high at 25.7%. The pandemic has further hit the ethnic minority community, especially those who work in the F&B, airport related jobs and construction. We are proud to be partnering with Ovolo's $1 initiative supporting ethnic minorities individuals who are in financial need. Ovolo will be providing financially needy ethnic minorities who are Hong Kong residents and who are unable to afford to quarantine in Hong Kong's hotels, with a daily rate of HK$1 up to 21 days. This is incredible and we hope that others will follow Ovolo's lead.”

Ms. Ginny MAN, Chairman of Board of Directors, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, concludes:

“It has always been the mission of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) to help the poor and people of Hong Kong since its establishment in 1870. We are glad to join hands with Ovolo Hotel Hong Kong and The Zubin Foundation in providing financial support to those who are now stranded at overseas country because of the pandemic to return to Hong Kong through the Ovolo Homecoming Project. Our Group is most willing to subsidize the air fares through the TWGHs Emergency Relief Fund. We hope that we can help alleviate their financial burden, and serve different strata of people in the community at their difficult times.”

Ovolo Hotels has been at the forefront of Quarantine in Hong Kong since regulations were first put in place by the HK Government in 2020. The launch of Ovolo's Quarantine Concierge in 2020 was extremely well received by residents, and The Ovolo Homecoming Project represents an extension of their maxim that all returning residents should be treated with both dignity and respect
