Sail Port Stephens has this week been secured by Destination NSW for an additional two years. The sailing regatta is a local tourist attraction and is expected to contribute more than $1.6 million into the local Hunter economy. The regatta has become an important annual event on the Australian yachting calendar, with competitive racing every day and a vibrant social program taking place each night.
Beginning in 2008 with 25 boats competing, it now attracts over 150 boats each year and continues to grow.
Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said the event showcases Port Stephens and the Hunter, and encouraged visitors to take advantage of everything the area has to offer.
“The Port Stephens area is one of the best sailing destinations in NSW, with a strong local sailing industry and community as well as perfect conditions for sailing. With 26 golden beaches, a vast blue bay and many beautiful inlets, Port Stephens is an idyllic beach getaway and I encourage visitors to take time out to experience these while they are at the event,” Ms Chipchase said.
