VisitBritain’s global marketing director, Robin Johnson, explains that the campaign taps into the growing trend of film and TV tourism, where popular shows and movies influence travel decisions. “Film and TV have become major drivers of travel. Whether it’s shows like Bridgerton or White Lotus, or iconic films such as Harry Potter, more and more travellers are inspired to visit locations made famous by the screen,” Johnson said.

The UK’s flourishing film and TV industry, with billions of pounds being invested by major studios, makes it a hub for creative production. With nearly as much production taking place as in California, the UK has become a global destination for film lovers and those wanting to see cinematic landscapes up close.

The campaign’s success will be measured by its impact on the UK economy, with VisitBritain aiming to drive £15-£18 of value for every pound spent on public funding.

The UK government has highlighted the importance of tourism, with the sector contributing £74 billion (AU$147 billion) to the economy. Tourism Minister Sir Chris Bryant expressed confidence that this new initiative will help grow the sector even further, with a goal to attract 50 million visitors annually by 2023.

A Multimedia Global Campaign

The Starring GREAT Britain campaign will run across multiple platforms, including digital billboards in high-traffic locations like Gare du Nord Station in Paris and Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. The campaign will also feature branded content on social media and drive traffic to VisitBritain’s global consumer website. Here, visitors can explore film-themed itineraries, ranging from romance to fantasy, action to adventure, all designed to inspire and extend travel experiences.

One of the highlights of the campaign is a digital map that links film-inspired locations and experiences across the UK, encouraging visitors to expand their itineraries and explore new regions. VisitBritain has published its tourism forecast for 2024

VisitBritain has published its tourism forecast for 2024 showing an increase in inbound visits and spend overall to the UK compared to 2023 levels, although with varying rates of recovery and growth across its major inbound visitor markets.

Looking at the number of visits to the UK, 39.5 million visits are forecast, up 5% on the 37.8 million expected in 2023, which is 3% below 2019 levels.

VisitBritain’s overall forecast for spending by international visitors in the UK in 2024 is £34.1 billion, up 7% on the spending predicted in 2023 and up 20% on 2019, although 96% of 2019 levels when adjusted for inflation.

Ship burning

With flaming torches and gleaming swords, hundreds of ‘Vikings’ march through Lerwick, in Scotland’s Shetland Isles – before setting fire to a full-size wooden ship. No, you’re not dreaming: every January for over 140 years, Up Helly Aa has honoured the islands’ Norse roots in spectacular fashion.

Cheese rolling

Dare you enter one of Britain’s most dangerous races? At the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Roll, contestants chase a giant piece of cheese down a steep 180-metre (600ft) slope – strangely a bone-breaking, hair-raising spectacle. Held in Gloucestershire every summer, this traditional race is thought to be more than 600 years old.

Morris dancing

With handkerchiefs twirling and ankle-bells tinking, Morris Dancers hop, skip and jump through Britain’s villages. A mainstay of traditional summer celebrations, you’ll find them at fêtes and festivities all over the country from Shrewsbury Folk Festival, the Padstow Obby Oss, to Lincoln Big Morris.

Silly swimming

Nowhere celebrates New Year’s Eve quite like Scotland. Known as Hogmanay, festivities sweep the nation for up to three days. But it’s the Loony Dook that comes afterward that will bring you back to earth (or sea) with a bump. On 1 January, Edinburgh locals take a fancy-dress swim in the icy Firth of Forth – and the wilder your outfit, the better.

Wearing leeks

Every St David’s Day, Welsh people pin a leek or daffodil to their clothes – the national vegetable and flower. Held on 1 March, this centuries-old celebration features parades, parties and festivals in honour of the nation’s patron saint, so be sure to don your petal or veggie badge accessory.

Maypole dancing

whether you manage a glorious patterns or a horrendous tangle, the art of Maypole Dancing is quite a tradition? British villages mark the arrival of spring by dancing with ribbons tied to a ‘maypole’ alongside what is hopefully an intricate jig to create a colourful woven symbol of unity. Try it for yourself at Hever Castle, Rode Hall and other May Day festivals.

Quirky festivals and events

Maldon Mud Race

The annual Maldon Mud Race sees around 300 competitors complete a 400 metre dash over the muddy bed of the River Blackwater in Promenade Park. Taking place at low tide, the runners – often kitted out in fancy dress – have to make their way to the opposite bank of the river and back again. In addition to the main race, the event is accompanied by numerous promotional stalls and a charity duck race.

World Conker Championships

Played using the large woody seeds of horse chestnut trees, the World Conker Championships will see competitors smash their way to victory in the picturesque Northamptonshire village of Southwick. Hosted by the Ashton Conker Club, the competition has taken place since 1965 and involves players using a conker threaded on a piece of string to break their opponent’s. Competitors take it in turns to strike, the winner being the person who’s conker stays intact.

Olney Pancake Race

The ladies of Olney in Buckinghamshire traditionally mark Shrove Tuesday by running through the town while tossing pancakes into the air. The Olney Pancake Race dates back to 1445, and participants must have lived in Olney for at least three months to compete. A Shriving Service follows the race, which includes a prize giving to all runners.

World Pea Shooting Championship

The World Pea Shooting Championship sees competitors go head-to-head trying to hit a set of targets with maple peas. Innovative peashooters are welcome, with past winners using laser sights in addition to their 30cm long blowpipes. If you want to enter you’ll need to hit the target – comprised of three circles of putty – from 3.5 metres away, and if you’re a top scorer you’ll progress to the championship. In addition to pea shooting, the event in Witcham, Cambridgeshire, has a number of animal experiences, novelty games and other stalls for those of all ages to enjoy.

World Snail Championships

Ready, steady, slow! Set to return in 2023, the World Snail Racing Championships usually involve around 200 snails and are part of the Congham Fete, near King’s Lynn, in Norfolk. The region is an ideal breeding ground for snails and has hosted snail racing for more than 25 years. Entrants creep over a 13-inch course in the fastest time possible, with a Snail Trainer to the World Championships watching over proceedings to ensure fair play all round. Find yourself a snail to participate, or just watch on as the molluscs slide off in search of glory.

World Bog Snorkelling Championships

Dive in at the deep end with a visit to the annual World Bog Snorkelling Championships in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales. Taking place at the Waen Rhydd bog on the outskirts of the town, competitors take the plunge to snorkel two lengths of the bog – around 110 metres – as quickly as possible while swimming doggy paddle and keeping face down in the water. For those who want to test themselves, a Bog Triathlon runs the day before the main event and includes an eight-mile run, 12-mile cycle and 60-yard bog snorkel.

World Gurning Championships

Established in 1267, Egremont Crab Fair and Sports features an abundance of traditional and bizarre events, including the stand-out World Gurning Championship. Found on the West Cumbrian coast, a matter of miles from the western fringe of the Lake District National Park, you can look forward to watching on as people distort their faces to pull grotesque poses through a horse collar, known as a braffin.

Peter Pan Goes Wrong at the Lyric Theatre, London

23 November – 14 January
The creators of the multi award-winning sell-out success, The Play That Goes Wrong, are presenting a new riotous spin on Peter Pan which will land at the Lyric theatre in the West End for the holiday season. The production promises to create pan-demonium this Christmas as a slap stick turn on a classic tale unravels in front of the theatre goers’ eyes. This unique brand of hilarious comedy has found universal appeal on a global scale.

Coronation Christmas, Tower of London

29 November – 4 January
The Tower of London will be decked in festive imagery with a nod to the Coronation as visitors explore this iconic site with views over Tower Bridge and stories a plenty within the walled fortress. Visitors will wander the route with Yeoman Warders spotted along the way to discover which one of the Royal Beasts will be taking care of the Crown, Cloak, Orb and Sceptre. The visit can finish with a Christmas Day feast, Coronation style at the foot of the mighty White Tower and an opportunity to pose on a throne for the ultimate group shot.

Kingdom of Winter at the ExCel,London

December – January
The Kingdom of Winter will be a huge new Christmas activation at London ExCeL which will include a circus, ice rink and fairground rides. Two food and drink villages each with a two-storey alpine-inspired chalet bar and street food vendors will add to the festive cheer. Dates and more details of this brand-new experience will be announced on the ExCel website later in the year.

Christmas Actually at the Royal Festival Hall, London

7 – 11 December
The world premiere of Christmas Actually, a variety extravaganza curated by Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’ Diary), will run for 8 performances only at London’s Southbank Centre. This fun festive feast for the senses is the ultimate Christmas show and will feature a star-studded stocking stuffed with music and performance. The show raised funds for Comic Relief which supports charitable projects in the UK and internationally.

Christmas World at Dreamland, Margate, Kent

15 -22 December 2023
Christmas is coming to Dreamland Margate with a brand-new experience at the iconic seaside venue which will create a magical, glittering, winter wonderland with a variety of festive food and drinks stalls, classic funfair games and specially selected rides. Dreamland’s famous Roller Disco will host a magical all-weather Snowball Fight zone. SLADE will appear on the 21 December to blast out their Christmas classics and Martin Kemp’s Back to the 80’s Christmas Party will be held on the 22 December. Steins By The Sea will bring the German Bierkeller to Margate on select evenings to create an ideal Christmas Party location with an evening of festive themed entertainment.

Leeds Christkindlemarkt, Leeds

November – December
Millennium Square in Leeds is transformed for the city’s Christkindelmarkt German Christmas Market with the addition of more decorated wooden chalets displaying hand-crafted jewellery and festive decorations, authentic German food, a Christmas Carousel and a Bavarian style eatery offering a delectable selection of traditional food and drink and evening entertainment. The city has a range of shopping, shows and experiences on offer throughout the winter season. New in 2023 will be a Christmas trail through the city to discover festive delights and treats along the way, with details to be announced later in the year.

Chatsworth At Christmas, Derbyshire

4 November – 7 January
This Christmas there will be a new theme for the trail at this iconic property and estate which will be announced in September 2023. Chatsworth delights each year with innovative new experiences and events and is one of the uniquely British Christmas experiences not to be missed. Discover the magic of Christmas at Chatsworth in the stately home, explore the enchanting, illuminated walk around the gardens at dusk and enjoy the Christmas market full of gifts, festive fare, winter warmers and sweet treats.

Christmas Kingdom at Bamburg Castle, Northumberland

11 November – 7 January
Newly redesigned and inspired by Northumberland’s myths and legends, the Christmas experience at Bamburgh castle takes a journey through the staterooms steeped in stories and folklore to discover a world sprinkled full of fairy magic. Fantastical creatures fly through frosted forests tinkling laughter while mermaids and shape-shifting selkies dive through shell-encrusted lagoons. There is also an extra option to meet Father Christmas for little ones.

Christmas at Kew, London

15 November – 7 January
The iconic Kew Gardens will illuminate the tree lined avenues, gardens and glasshouses to create a spectacular light trail. In 2023 there will be new bespoke installations that will include: Lili, a series of abstract, illuminated flowers that will tower 3m above the trail, Spark Ballet with 24 sparkling light filled lanterns, Candles which will see 100 suspended floating candles and Trapezoid, one of the longest light tunnels to ever appear at Kew. Book early to secure a place as there is a limit to tickets and key dates will sell out.

Dunham Massey, Cheshire

17 November – 31 December
This year, the after-dark illuminated festive trail will have spectacular new creations including colour-changing batons of light stretching out into the distance. One example is Nova, a huge silver shrouded in mist as if fallen from the sky and star-shaped arches along the trail. The stunning house, gardens and deer park will be adorned with seasonal sparkle. There are independent street food vendors with spiced winter warmers and hot chocolates available, and a bespoke marshmallow stall where visitors can toast their sweet treats over an open fire.

The Story of Sleeping Beauty at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire

17 November – 1 January
The exceptional after-dark trail will have a new lights theme for 2023 as the Sleeping Beauty tale will be reimagined inside the Palace. Christmas at Blenheim Palace is a place where new memories are made as a multitude of twinkling lights and seasonal sounds fill the air with festive fun. Explore the Palace rooms transformed by the story of Sleeping Beauty as this classic fairy-tale is created for a new audience. In the Great Court outside there is a range of gifts available from the Christmas Market.

Christmas Lights at Leeds Castle, Kent

24 November – 31 December
The delightful experience at Kent’s Leeds Castle returns with a new trail and twist for 2023, following the huge success of last year’s first event. Sony Music has announced new installations and a new route to provide magical scenes, set to create lasting festive memories. New displays include sparkling chandeliers suspended in the trees, a laser garden filled with beams of light, a route through twinkling mirrored hearts and Feast of Light bedecked with multicoloured glowing strings. Street food vendors will be on hand with spiced winter warmers, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows.

Castle of Light, Edinburgh, Scotland

24 November – 3 January
The iconic and spectacular after-dark trail at Edinburgh Castle is being transformed this festive season with new projections which will animate the walls and there will be immersive, enchanting installations that will guide visitors through a sea of twinkling lights displays in the castle grounds. Festivities take place outdoors at the iconic castle in the heart of the city at the top of the Royal Mile.

Christmas at Bute Park, Wales

24 November – 1 January
The award-winning experience is the biggest festive light trail Wales has seen and in 2023 it is set to shine brighter than ever with a host of new installations, including a hypnotic laser journey and a display with an epic orb of iridescent colour. The park will be lit up with a stunning array of lasers, neon trees and flame-lit festive installations. Along the route there will be food and drink stalls with delicious festive treats.

Luminate at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Llanarthne

29 November – 24 December
This year the event has been re-imagined and will take in a sparkling array of fun new interactive elements and light installations along a new route around the Botanic Garden. A mesmerising mile-long walk, with stunning lighting elements will be set to seasonal ambient music to create a timeless experience not to be missed.

Cardiff Christmas Festival, Wales

6 – 24 December
New for 2023 this festival will have a performance of Welsh of the West End which will see the Britain’s Got Talent musical theatre group appear in the intimate surroundings of the Spiegel tent for one night only on the 17 December. The festival is this year in a larger festival site in Sophia Gardens and throughout the season will also include returning shows: Castellana, a jaw dropping blend of world class cabaret, circus, burlesque, and comedy and Santa’s Wish, a magical Christmas musical adventure for all the family.

Britain’s most haunted places – and how to explore them

Dare you visit our darkest, most haunted corners? From playful poltergeists to headless queens, Britain’s oldest houses and landmarks are (legend has it) brimming with ghosts. Whether you’re an avid ghoul-hunter or an ardent sceptic, these spooky tours, creepy pubs and infamous hotels will certainly send a shiver down your spine…

Hampton Court Palace, Richmond

For more Tudor terrors, head to Hampton Court Palace. King Henry VIII has been spotted here. You may hear Catherine Howard’s chilling screams or even see Jane Seymour in the shadows. In 2003, they were joined by a new ghoul, the ‘Skeletor’: he was caught on CCTV opening a door but then disappeared without a trace.

Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire

Looming over its namesake town, the ruins of Whitby Abbey inspired Bram Stoker to write the tale of Dracula, and you don’t need much imagination to see why. Maybe you’ll witness the spectre of St Hilda peering from a window, or the wails of Constance de Beverley, an imprisoned nun? Popular ghost walks depart from a nearby graveyard…

Margam Castle, Port Talbot

If you hear children giggling at Margam Castle, you’re in trouble. Apparently, they love to lurk in doorways and levitate objects – while the murdered gamekeeper screams with rage, and an old blacksmith roams the grounds. So much fun! On its Paranormal Night events expect sightings of floating orbs are ‘abundant’ - you have been warned.

Cawdor Castle, Nairnshire

Have you seen Muriel Calder? You can’t miss her: she has long brown hair, a blue dress – and no hands. So we’re told, this Cawdor Castle heiress was murdered by her father in the 1700s, after she was caught cavorting with a rival clan member. Perhaps you’ll see her in an upstairs window, looking out for her lover…

Blickling Estate, Norfolk

Always dreamed of meeting royalty? Hopefully you’ll bump into Anne Boleyn at Blickling House, as she wanders the corridors with her severed head. On 19 May, the anniversary of her death, ghost hunters gather at the estate’s gates: legend has it, she can be seen arriving at her birthplace in a carriage pulled by headless horses.

Mary King’s Close, Edinburgh

Edinburgh certainly has a few grisly secrets around its aging cobbled streets but Mary King’s Close is its darkest. This underground city is supposedly overrun with ghouls: plague victims, phantom pipers, prisoners of war and even a headless drummer. If you’re brave enough for a guided tour, don’t forget to bring a doll for Annie, its resident ghost-child…

Bodmin Moor, Cornwall

Is it a giant fox, an escaped zoo animal, or something more sinister? While you’re hiking on Cornwall’s Bodmin Moor, try not to dwell on The Beast. This huge panther-like cat has been spotted some 60 times over the years, with yellow eyes and insatiable hunger for livestock. In 2016, a set of big paw prints were spotted in nearby St Austell.

Pluckley, Kent

Maybe you should think twice before visiting Pluckley. It looks lovely, but it’s actually Britain’s most haunted village, plagued by a shrieking man, a woman who set fire to herself, and a highwayman who appears at ‘Fright Corner’ – to name but a few. A drink at the Black Horse might soothe your nerves, but beware, you maybe sharing your pint with a ghost or two.

Want to party with poltergeists? Join a seance to chat with the spirits? Craig y Nos Castle in the Brecon Beacons is full of opportunities to spook yourself silly. It was once a sanitorium, and has been running ghost tours for over a decade.

If its taxidermy animals don’t give you the creeps, the Drovers Inn’s ghoulish stories certainly will. From dead children and ghostly lights, to a frozen family at the foot of your bed, this Loch Lomond hotel isn’t quite as serene as it looks.

Chillingham Castle

Feeling fearless? Join a ghost-hunting tour of Northumberland’s Chillingham Castle, before bedding down in this medieval fortress for the night. With a little luck - or maybe not - you’ll meet its woman-in-white in the pantry, and witness the spooky voices in the chapel.

St Briavels Castle, Gloucestershire

At 800 years old, St Briavels Castle – now a YHA hostel – has seen it all. But its gatehouse still holds horrible secrets: visitors often report a chilling atmosphere, and its walls bear the scars of graffiti carved by long-deceased prisoners.

Paranormal pints: Britain’s spookiest pubs

Pilchard Inn, Devon

It won’t just be the timbers which are shivering here. In the 1300s, the Pilchard Inn was the hideout of pirate Tom Crocker, who was eventually hanged for smuggling. Legend has it, he appears on the August anniversary of his death.

Stag Inn, Hastings

With its mummified cats, a murdered sea captain in the cellar, and ghoulish girl dressed all in white, The Stag Inn isn’t for the faint-hearted. Ask the bar staff about the secret underground tunnel, if you dare.

Adam and Eve, Norwich

The spirit of Lord Sheffield lives on at the Adam and Eve, where he likes to run his fingers through customers’ hair! He was murdered here in 1549, and the pub is a favourite of ghost hunters.

The Skirrid Mountain Inn, Abergavenny

Welcome to the most haunted pub in Wales. While it serves a great pint, Abergavenny’s Skirrid Mountain Inn is best known for its creepy footsteps, slamming doors and whispering voices.

Ye Olde Starre Inne, York

Bonfire Night experiences in Britain

Bonfire Night is a celebration of a failed plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. Back in 1605, a group of plotters had planned to destroy the buildings, with members of parliament and King James I inside. Their plan was thwarted when one of the plotters, Guy Fawkes, was discovered in a cellar beneath the Palace of Westminster, alongside 36 barrels of gunpowder. Fawkes was promptly arrested and tortured until he gave up the names of his co-conspirators. He was then tried for treason and sentenced to death.
