Pop-up Photo Exhibition at the Festival of Fleeces

During the Festival of the Fleeces in Merriwa over the long weekend (10,11,12 June) there will be a pop-up photography exhibition in a main street shop front at 133 Bettington Street. 

Two exhibitors are contributing, Ellie Matthews from Merriwa and Roger Skinner from Muswellbrook. 

Ellie's contribution is themed 'for the love of rust' and showcases a range of photographs of rusty surfaces around Merriwa. Ellie's photos range from rusty roof tops to abstract micro closeups. The exhibition also offers an interactive opportunity to photograph a rust installation. 

Roger, who has a long held love for and association with photography, is contributing a selection of his landscape photography recently exhibited in the Muswellbrook Regional Art Gallery. Roger will also have on display a series of projected images set up in a back room alcove with seating for viewing pleasure. Rogers's work will be available for purchase. 

The exhibition will be open from midday Friday 10th until 7pm, and reopen on Saturday 11th at 10am until 5pm.

Maisie Morrow sashed The Sydney Royal Land Showgirl Winner

This years Sydney Royal Land Showgirl Winner comes from the Upper Hunter, where she recently was crowned Miss Merriwa Showgirl. The winner, Maisie Morrow, will hold the official position of young female ambassador for the agricultural show movement and rural NSW, and has the honour of officially opening the 2018 Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Maisie Morrow is honoured to represent her town Cassilis and Zone 5 – Oberon. She is involved in the Cassilis Rural Fire Brigade, Merriwa Show Society, Merriwa Country Women’s Association and the Scone Grasslands Society.

As an agronomist and livestock nutritionalist for Landmark, coupled with a degree in rural science, Ms Morrow is well prepared to take on the vital ambassadorial role of Sydney Royal Showgirl.

“Raising awareness of rural and regional NSW is essential for economic sustainability of global primary industries,” Ms Morrow said.

“We are a key contributor in the food security discussion and must maintain an active voice so farmers and producers have a seat at the table.”

Her interest in being a Showgirl was driven by her passion to support women in agriculture and emphasising their integral role in the industry.

“I would like to use this powerful position as a rural ambassador to encourage women to engage in their communities and showcase the diverse opportunities that exist in rural NSW,” she said.

The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl 2017 – First Runner Up

Emma Gorman represents Zone 7 – Hillston and her hometown Wagga Wagga, where she is a medical student in her final year at the University of NSW.

“It’s important we acknowledge rural communities cannot survive without young people; they are the future doctors, farmers and teachers who will continue our agricultural shows,” Ms Gorman said.

The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl 2017 – Second Runner Up

Isabel Hawken is a registered nurse in Orange representing Zone 5 – Oberon and aspires to work for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

“I have particularly enjoyed networking with other young women and people within my local community to address concerns and celebrate our region,” Ms Hawken said.

The competition has come a long way since 20 women first competed in 1962 and the inaugural winner, Miss Margaret McKay (late RAS Councillor Mrs Margaret Pennefather) was awarded $200 and a silver tray.

Rail Trail Information Sessions in the Upper Hunter

Work has commenced on the preparation of a feasibility study to establish whether it is possible to develop a recreation trail on the disused railway between Merriwa and Sandy Hollow, with a possible extension to Denman.

“Rail trails”(as they are known) have a long history in the USA and the first Australian rail trail was developed in WA over 25 years ago. There are now over 100 rail trails in Australia, built primarily on publicly owned land. They bring numerous benefits to host communities and are a vital piece of community infrastructure. They are designed for “non-motorised” users - cyclists, walkers, runners, parents pushing prams, horse rider, people in wheelchairs. They can also be used for events such as fun runs. One of their key advantages is that they offer safe, flat routes away from dangerous roads – many rail trail users (particularly family groups) are not people who cycle on roads due to traffic. Rail trails traverse a variety of urban and rural landscapes including farms and paddocks, vineyards, forests and wetlands – users appreciate the opportunity to travel through and enjoy this range of landscapes.

The Upper Hunter Shire Council and Muswellbrook Shire Council have commissioned the feasibility study to investigate the practicalities, challenges and potential benefits from developing the trail. The work is in response to the NSW Government’s announcement in 2014 that it had made funding available for the development of rail trails in NSW.

The study has now entered a critical stage with a series of community consultation events to take place in mid August.

The consultants, Mike Halliburton Associates and Transplan Pty Ltd, will host a number of ‘Open Houses’ where members of the community can drop in and discuss the project with the consultants. Representatives of the two Councils – Upper Hunter Shire Council and Muswellbrook Shire Council (which are funding the study) will also be present to discuss the project.

The study is in the process of assessing the works required to develop the rail trail, the costs associated with the construction and the potential economic and other benefits that the trail would bring to the region and users of the trail.

The dates and places for the ‘Open Houses’ are:

• Sandy Hollow – 9.00am - 11.00am - Tuesday August 11th at Sandy Hollow Hall.
• Merriwa – 2.00pm– 7.00pm - Tuesday August 11th at Merriwa RSL Club.
• Denman – 2.00pm– 7.00pm - Wednesday August 12th at Denman Memorial Hall.
The purpose of these sessions is to provide information about the project via a display and one-on-one conversations with the consultants and Council representatives as well as providing an opportunity for community members to ask questions.

Watch the red socks running for 25 years Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces

In 2015, the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces is celebrating 25 years. This volunteer-led event relies on the generosity of the local community and businesses each year to provide an authentic rural festival to over 5,000 visitors and locals alike. The highlight of the annual festival, held on the June Long Weekend each year, is the Festival Parade led by a mob of sheep in red socks.

The Festival of the Fleeces Committee Chairperson Cr Deirdre Peebles said “The Festival Committee has lined up many exciting attractions to celebrate the twenty fifth year.”

“Along with the traditional Running of the Sheep, the committee has invited Ray Hadley and the 2GB Continuous Call Team to attend and promote our unique country event. The Australian Wool Industry will be holding a fashion parade of quality woollen garments, as seen at Australian Fashion Week, and visitors will be entertained by Tamworth’s ‘Rockabilly Sweetheart’ Shelly Minson, 2014 Golden Guitar winner along with her 4 time Golden Guitar winning husband Lawrie Minson.” Cr Peebles said.

The Festival is the largest event for the Merriwa district attracting a significant number of tourists from all over the state who come to experience the country hospitality.

Some of the many events held over the weekend include sheep yard dog trials, shearing demonstrations, a Bush Poets breakfast, wool spinning demonstrations, felting exhibitions, educational displays for children including Crocstars reptile show, My Pet Dinosaur, a ‘ROAR’ petting zoo and a spectacular “KaBoom” fireworks display on the Saturday evening.

Merriwa celebrates Festival of the Fleeces every June to commemorate their involvement within the Australian Wool Industry. Events are held on the Saturday and they range from the Street Parade, Petting Zoo, Yard Dog Trials, Whip Cracking, the dog agility, exhibitions and much more.

The event started in 1990 and visitors come from all over the state to Merriwa is a unique and friendly rural town nestled in the Upper Hunter Valley. A large number of visitors come to Merriwa looking for that ‘breath of fresh air’ and to experience our region’s history.

Held every year on the June Long Weekend, the Festival of the Fleeces combines history, wool and fun, 2015 promises to be no different.

The Running of the Sheep at the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces is gaining notoriety Australia-wide. In the 24 years the festival’s been held, thousands of people have traveled from far and near to see the spectacular and when they arrive they quickly realise that the Festival of the Fleeces offers an entire feast of entertainment.

There’s something for everyone at this year’s Festival of the Fleeces and it truly is a great celebration. For something new and exciting, the festival will be hosting the inaugural Sheep Yard Dog Trials, and the Festival Team Penning Championships.

25th Annual Running of the Sheep – 6 June 2015

Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces is a major family event in the Upper Hunter Region and recognises the importance that sheep and the wool industry have played in our history. The Festival provides an invaluable representation of life on the land with sheep to the youth of today as well as a reminder to the older generation of our past. The event started in 1990 and visitors come from all over the state to Merriwa is a unique and friendly rural town nestled in the Upper Hunter Valley. A large number of visitors come to Merriwa looking for that ‘breath of fresh air’ and to experience our region’s history. Held every year on the June Long Weekend, the Festival of the Fleeces combines history, wool and fun, 2015 promises to be no different.

The Festival of the Fleeces attracts a large number of tourists from all over the State. Visitors come to Merriwa to experience the country hospitality and to observe the skills demonstrated, including shearers using past and present techniques, blacksmiths, horse riding skills, wool spinning, farriers, trained working dogs and their handlers. Of course the main event is the ‘Running of the Sheep’ leading the parade along Merriwa’s main street wearing red socks, a sight not seen outside of Merriwa!

In 2015, the Festival will include The Sheep Yard Dog Trials; Bush Poet’s Breakfast; Circus West; Team Penning and Whip Cracking competitions; Croc Stars Reptile Show; Laser Tag; ROAR Petting Zoo; and the children’s amusement rides. Sponsorship and donations large or small all benefit the community in holding this event and without such support these events may not go ahead. Each event adds to the atmosphere of the weekend and allows thousands of people the chance to experience country life and the hospitality Merriwa has to offer.

The Running of the Sheep at the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces is gaining notoriety Australia-wide. In the 24 years the festival’s been held, thousands of people have traveled from far and near to see the spectacular and when they arrive they quickly realise that the Festival of the Fleeces offers an entire feast of entertainment.

Radius Percussion in the Upper Hunter

James Townsend & Adam Wills

Following the tradition established in 2011, 2013 will also see a schools concert tour and two public concerts presented by one section of the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music.

UHCM Director Adam Wills will join with fellow percussionist James Townsend to form Radius Percussion,  a dynamic percussion duo that will undertake a week-long tour performing at schools throughout the Upper Hunter and the presentation of public concerts at Merriwa and Scone. The concerts will feature a wide variety of music, including some familiar tunes and some new music composed for the duo.

Technological Advances Impacting the Meetings Industry

In a first for the Middle East GIBTM 2013 has given delegates a glimpse of how technology will shape events in the future, becoming the first show in the region to present the hybrid event initiative Event Camp Middle East 2013.

This hybrid format included seminar sessions focused on technological advances impacting the meetings industry, broadcast from both the show floor and streamed online from destinations as far afield as the US and Australia.

It extended GIBTM’s reach to an online global audience of 16,000 users across 10 countries in just two hours.

“By pioneering this hybrid format we have taken GIBTM out of the four walls of the show floor to a global audience,” said Lois Hall, Exhibition Manager, which kicked off at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) yesterday and runs until Wednesday (March 27)

“We recognise the importance of technology and social media in shaping content and the way in which meetings’ professionals are connecting now and how they will do so in the future, which is why this year’s show has embraced these ground-breaking trends.”

The session took on added relevance when it was reiterated that the Middle East was the fastest growing region for twitter users with 2.1 million recorded in June 2012, while in November 2012 the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region had 45 million facebook users, 50% of whom accessed the media via mobile.

Josh Dry, marketing executive at ShowGizmo, which provides GIBTM’s show app and voluntarily co-organised Event Camp Middle East 2013 with Paul Cook, principal at Hybrid Event Centre and managing director at Planet Planit Ltd, said the show was proving an industry leader by showing meeting professionals what future events could look like.

The population Merriwa will be increased as people from all over the state of NSW flock to the town to enjoy the Festival of Fleeces. The Festival of the Fleeces is a celebration of the regions historic association with the Australian Wool Industry. This event is a fun filled family day out that raises money for Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Merriwa VRA. Festival events will be held Friday night 8th June and all day Saturday 9th June in the town centre of Merriwa.

The township of Merriwa is located in NSW, Australia, 82km from Muswellbrook, or 293 km from Sydney.

Features of the Festival include Running of the Sheep (where sheep run down Bettington Street, Merriwa’s main street, dressed in Red Socks) and the Festival Parade which commences at 12 noon. With rides, Art Show, games, team penning, Quilting display, dog high jumps, whip cracking, clowns, stalls there is something for everyone. Plus a whole lot more to keep the family entertained.

There will be demonstrations of sheep shearing, where people can watch the old-time blade shearer as he shows his skills taking the fleece, through to today’s shearer with his motor run blades.

The Art Competition is open for all to enter, with prizes for traditional painting, water colour painting, miniature painting, print making section, drawing, The Photography Competition has sections for Colour, Black and White, and Novice.

The Festival of Fleeces concludes with KaBoom letting their fireworks off at 6.15pm at the Show Ground and a Team Penning competition at 6.45pm.
