China and Viet Nam Strengthen Cross-Border Tourism Cooperation

A new wave of tourism cooperation between China and Viet Nam is creating fresh opportunities for cross-border travel, with businesses from Guangxi and Quang Ninh joining forces to develop stronger tourism connections between the two neighbouring destinations.

The agreements highlight the growing importance of cross-border tourism, improved connectivity and closer cooperation between travel businesses in southern China and northern Viet Nam.

Tourism Businesses Build New Partnerships

A business networking conference between China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Viet Nam's Quang Ninh Province was held in Nanning on July 7, bringing together representatives from more than 110 enterprises.

Eleven pairs of businesses from Guangxi and Quang Ninh signed memoranda of understanding, cooperation agreements and commercial contracts covering a range of sectors.

The agreements included smart border gate development, logistics infrastructure, agricultural, forestry and fishery products, cross-border cultural tourism, and testing and inspection services.

For tourism, the agreements are particularly significant, with five tourism and cultural enterprises from Guangxi signing cooperation deals with travel companies in Quang Ninh.

Expanding China-Viet Nam Cross-Border Tourism

Vietnam
The tourism agreements aim to encourage two-way tourist exchanges and make greater use of the complementary tourism resources available on both sides of the border.

By connecting tourism companies in Guangxi and Quang Ninh, the cooperation could help develop new travel experiences and strengthen the China-Viet Nam cross-border tourism market.

The partnership also provides opportunities for travel businesses to work together on itineraries that connect destinations across the international border, giving visitors greater choice when planning regional holidays.

Stronger Connections Through Smart Border Gates

Guangxi and Quang Ninh share an important international border, making efficient border crossings essential for tourism and trade.

Major projects including the Dongxing-Mong Cai cross-border economic cooperation zone and the Dongxing-Mong Cai smart border gate are progressing, according to information provided for the conference.

Once completed, these projects are expected to strengthen connectivity and provide additional momentum for cross-border trade and investment.

For travellers, improved border infrastructure has the potential to make journeys between Guangxi and Quang Ninh more convenient while supporting greater tourism movement between China and Viet Nam.

Tourism and Economic Links Continue to Grow

China
The relationship between Guangxi and Viet Nam extends beyond tourism. Guangxi authorities reported that trade between Guangxi and Viet Nam exceeded CNY 300 billion, equivalent to approximately US$41.8 billion, in 2025.

The latest business agreements demonstrate how tourism is becoming part of a broader network of economic and commercial cooperation.

The conference also highlighted opportunities in areas such as employment and technology. Yang Qian, General Director of Guangxi Jinxiu Dongyue Co. Ltd., said the company had recruited more than 200 Vietnamese workers for enterprises in Guangxi since March.

A Promising Future for Cross-Border Travel

The closer cooperation between Guangxi and Quang Ninh presents an encouraging outlook for China-Viet Nam tourism.

As tourism companies develop new partnerships, border infrastructure improves and cross-border connectivity becomes stronger, travellers could benefit from more integrated experiences linking the two destinations.

For visitors seeking cultural discovery, regional travel and authentic cross-border experiences, the developing tourism relationship between Guangxi and Quang Ninh offers an exciting reason to explore both sides of the China-Viet Nam border.

Discover Yunnan in Summer: China’s Southwest Unveils a New Wave of Cultural Tourism Experiences

Yunnan
Yunnan Welcomes Summer Travellers with Culture, Nature and New Experiences

China’s Yunnan Province is preparing for a busy summer travel season with an expanded program of cultural tourism experiences designed to give visitors more reasons to explore the region.

From spectacular karst landscapes and clear waters to ethnic performances, sunset concerts, study tours and regional food experiences, destinations across Yunnan are introducing new activities while improving visitor services.

The initiative reflects the province’s growing focus on combining nature, culture and interactive experiences to create more memorable holidays for families, independent travellers and visitors seeking authentic encounters with southwestern China.

For travellers planning a summer holiday in China, Yunnan offers an appealing combination of dramatic scenery, rich ethnic heritage, outdoor adventures and distinctive local cuisine.

Puzhehei Adds Music, Culture and Interactive Experiences

One of Yunnan’s most popular summer destinations, Puzhehei scenic area, is expanding its tourism program beyond its traditional attractions.

Located in Yunnan’s Wenshan region, Puzhehei is renowned for its striking karst formations, tranquil waters and picturesque landscapes. Visitors have traditionally come to enjoy flower viewing, sightseeing and the much-loved water fights that provide a refreshing activity during the warmer months.

This summer, however, the destination is adding a broader selection of cultural and entertainment experiences.

Visitors can enjoy sunset concerts, ethnic cultural performances and Yi ethnic dances, creating opportunities to experience local traditions while taking in the area's natural scenery.

The combination of spectacular landscapes and evening entertainment gives travellers more opportunities to enjoy Puzhehei throughout the day and into the evening.

The strong interest in the destination is already evident, with more than 60 percent of guest houses around the Puzhehei scenic area reportedly booked.

Experience Yunnan Through Ethnic Culture

Yunnan is one of China’s most culturally diverse provinces, home to numerous ethnic communities with distinctive languages, traditions, music, dance, clothing and festivals.

For international visitors, experiencing this cultural diversity can add an important dimension to a journey through the province.

Ethnic performances and traditional dances allow visitors to see elements of local heritage presented in engaging ways, while themed tourism programs are creating opportunities for travellers to participate rather than simply observe.

At Puzhehei, the inclusion of Yi ethnic dances alongside concerts and outdoor activities demonstrates how destinations are combining traditional culture with contemporary tourism programming.

This approach can appeal particularly to travellers who want to experience more than sightseeing and are looking for cultural activities that connect them with the character of a destination.

Study Tours Bring Families Closer to Nature

Yunnan
Yunnan is also expanding tourism experiences aimed at families and younger travellers.

Tourism destinations across the province are introducing and improving study tours that combine travel, outdoor exploration and educational activities.

At the Xishuangbanna Tropical Flowers Garden, operators have been refining study-tour routes, expanding science-related educational content and strengthening safety and crowd-management measures.

Wang Hui, deputy general manager of Yunnan Xishuangbanna Tropical Flowers Garden Operation and Management Co., Ltd., said the organisation had improved its study-tour routes and prepared additional popular science content while strengthening safety officer rotations, crowd control and parent-child service arrangements.

The objective is to allow children to explore nature and gain knowledge in a safe and organised environment.

For families travelling through Yunnan, these experiences offer an opportunity to turn a holiday into an educational adventure, introducing children to tropical plants, biodiversity and the natural environment.

Summer Retreats and Self-Driving Adventures

The province’s cultural tourism program extends well beyond individual attractions.

A number of destinations are working together to launch activities covering study tours, summer retreats, self-driving holidays and other seasonal experiences.

Self-driving travel provides an especially flexible way to explore Yunnan, allowing visitors to travel between scenic areas, towns and cultural attractions while enjoying the province’s varied landscapes.

For travellers who prefer slower journeys, summer retreats can provide opportunities to spend more time in scenic surroundings and experience local communities away from the busiest tourist centres.

The variety of tourism themes means visitors can tailor their Yunnan holiday according to their interests, whether they are travelling as a family, with friends or independently.

Taste Yunnan’s Famous Summer Mushrooms

Food is another important part of the Yunnan tourism experience.

The province is famous for its wide variety of wild mushrooms, and mushroom tasting is being incorporated into the summer cultural tourism program.

For food-focused travellers, discovering regional ingredients can be one of the most enjoyable ways to understand a destination.

Yunnan’s mushroom cuisine reflects the province’s rich natural environment and culinary traditions. Seasonal food experiences also give visitors an opportunity to explore local flavours that may not be readily available elsewhere.

Mushroom-themed activities therefore add a gastronomic element to the province’s broader summer tourism offering, complementing its nature-based and cultural experiences.

Cultural Tourism Vouchers Encourage Travel

Yunnan
To further encourage tourism consumption, Yunnan has begun distributing cultural tourism consumption vouchers with a total value of 70 million yuan.

The vouchers are being made available to residents across Yunnan as well as tourists from other parts of China.

The initiative is designed to encourage visitors to participate in cultural and tourism activities while supporting businesses across the tourism sector.

For travellers already planning a holiday in Yunnan, tourism incentives can provide additional opportunities to explore attractions, participate in activities and experience the province’s diverse tourism products.

Better Services for a More Comfortable Holiday

Expanding tourism experiences is only one part of Yunnan’s summer tourism strategy.

Destinations are also focusing on improving visitor services, safety arrangements, crowd management and family-friendly facilities.

This is particularly important during the summer peak season when popular attractions can experience significant increases in visitor numbers.

By improving safety officer rotations, crowd control and parent-child service mechanisms, tourism operators are working to create a more comfortable experience for families and other visitors.

The combination of expanded activities and improved services is helping Yunnan prepare for increased summer demand.

Why Yunnan Should Be on Your China Travel List

Yunnan offers an extraordinary variety of experiences within one province.

Travellers can explore dramatic mountains and karst landscapes, walk beside lakes and rivers, discover colourful markets, experience the traditions of ethnic communities and sample distinctive regional cuisine.

Destinations such as Puzhehei provide opportunities to combine outdoor adventures with cultural entertainment, while Xishuangbanna offers tropical environments and educational experiences.

For families, the province provides nature-based activities and study tours. For food lovers, regional cuisine and seasonal ingredients offer a different perspective on Yunnan. For culture seekers, ethnic performances, traditional dances and local customs create opportunities to experience the province’s rich heritage.

A Fresh Approach to Summer Travel in Yunnan

Yunnan
Yunnan’s latest cultural tourism initiatives demonstrate how destinations can build on their natural attractions by adding experiences that encourage visitors to stay longer and explore more deeply.

Sunset concerts, ethnic performances, Yi dances, study tours, summer retreats, self-driving routes and mushroom tasting are broadening the range of activities available to visitors.

At the same time, tourism operators are investing in improved services, safety measures and family-friendly experiences.

For travellers looking for an inspiring summer destination in China, Yunnan offers a compelling blend of natural beauty, cultural discovery, outdoor recreation and culinary experiences.

As the summer peak season approaches, the province is showing that the future of tourism is not simply about seeing a destination. It is about experiencing it through its landscapes, people, culture, food and stories.

Vientiane's Green Transformation: How a Laos-China Low-Carbon Project is Creating a More Sustainable City

Laos
Vientiane, the relaxed capital of Lao PDR, is taking another step towards a greener urban future through a major Laos-China low-carbon development project.

The Vientiane-Saysettha Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone is introducing clean energy, electric transport and modern environmental technologies designed to reduce carbon emissions while improving urban services.

The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 1,200 tonnes each year, according to the China International Development Cooperation Agency. It forms part of China's wider South-South climate cooperation program and is intended to demonstrate how low-carbon technologies can support sustainable urban development in partner countries.

For Vientiane, the initiative represents more than an environmental project. It is part of the city's continuing transformation and could contribute to creating a cleaner, more efficient urban environment for residents, workers and visitors.

A Low-Carbon Vision for Vientiane

Officially inaugurated in 2022, the Vientiane-Saysettha Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone covers approximately 11.5 square kilometres.

The development is one of the largest Laos-China cooperation projects and has been designed as both an industrial park and a new urban area. It is expected to attract investment of approximately US$5 billion, bringing together businesses, infrastructure and urban development within a planned environment.

At the heart of the project is the concept of demonstrating how economic development and environmental responsibility can work together.

Rather than relying solely on traditional urban infrastructure, the demonstration zone incorporates clean-energy technologies and lower-emission transport as part of its development model.

Solar Energy Lighting the Way

One of the most visible elements of the project is the introduction of solar-powered street lighting.

Solar street lights can provide illumination while reducing reliance on conventional electricity sources and lowering energy consumption. In a growing urban area, such infrastructure can contribute to more efficient public services while supporting broader carbon-reduction objectives.

For residents and visitors, improved street lighting can also contribute to a more accessible and comfortable urban environment after dark.

The use of solar technology demonstrates how relatively straightforward renewable-energy solutions can become part of everyday city infrastructure.

Electric Buses and Greener Transport

Laos
Transport is another major component of the low-carbon initiative.

Electric buses have been introduced in the demonstration zone, together with new-energy trucks and specialised environmental vehicles.

Moving towards electric and other low-emission vehicles can help reduce the pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions associated with conventional fossil-fuel-powered transport.

For a developing urban area, the introduction of electric public transport also provides an opportunity to establish cleaner mobility infrastructure as the city grows, rather than having to replace large amounts of conventional transport infrastructure later.

The project therefore demonstrates how sustainable transport can become part of urban planning from an early stage.

Smarter Environmental Management

The low-carbon initiative extends beyond energy and transport.

Environmental monitoring vehicles and environmental law enforcement vehicles have been introduced to strengthen environmental management within the demonstration zone.

These vehicles can support monitoring activities and help authorities respond to environmental issues more effectively.

The combination of monitoring technology, environmental enforcement and clean-energy infrastructure reflects a broader approach to sustainable urban development in which environmental protection becomes part of day-to-day management.

Supporting Businesses and Jobs

The demonstration zone is also intended to support economic development.

According to information from the China International Development Cooperation Agency, the project has improved urban services and environmental management while creating employment and supporting business operations for hundreds of Chinese and regional companies located in the zone.

This highlights an important aspect of sustainable development: environmental improvements need to work alongside economic opportunity.

The zone is intended to attract substantial investment while demonstrating that industrial and urban development can incorporate cleaner technologies and environmental safeguards.

A Partnership for Climate Cooperation

Pha That Luang, Laos
The Vientiane-Saysettha project forms part of a wider international climate cooperation program.

It is one of 10 low-carbon pilot projects launched by China in partner countries under its South-South climate cooperation program.

These projects are intended to share experience, technologies and practical approaches to reducing emissions and strengthening climate resilience.

For Lao PDR, the initiative provides an opportunity to expand expertise in areas such as renewable energy, sustainable transport and environmental management while developing the skills required to manage increasingly complex urban environments.

Building Environmental Skills in Laos

Technology alone cannot create a sustainable city.

The project therefore includes training programs designed to strengthen Laos' environmental management capacity.

Training can help local officials and environmental professionals develop the knowledge required to operate new technologies, monitor environmental conditions and implement effective environmental policies.

Developing this local expertise is particularly important for the long-term success of low-carbon projects. Infrastructure may provide the foundation, but trained people are needed to maintain, manage and improve it.

What the Project Means for Visitors

Visitors to Vientiane may not immediately notice every element of the low-carbon demonstration zone, but the broader transformation has implications for the city's future as a destination.

Cleaner public transport, improved environmental management and more efficient urban infrastructure can contribute to a more pleasant city for both residents and tourists.

Vientiane is known for its relaxed atmosphere, Buddhist temples, French colonial influences, Mekong River setting and distinctive Lao culture. As the capital continues to develop, maintaining environmental quality will become increasingly important.

Low-carbon urban development provides an opportunity for economic growth without sacrificing the qualities that make Vientiane attractive to visitors.

A Greener Future for Vientiane

The Vientiane-Saysettha Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone represents an experiment in combining urban growth, investment and environmental responsibility.

With solar-powered street lighting, electric buses, new-energy trucks, environmental monitoring vehicles and strengthened environmental management, the project is introducing a range of practical technologies designed to reduce emissions.

Its expected annual reduction of more than 1,200 tonnes of carbon emissions demonstrates the potential impact of coordinated low-carbon measures.

The project also highlights the importance of combining infrastructure with investment, employment, environmental training and local capacity building.

As Vientiane continues to grow, initiatives such as the Vientiane-Saysettha Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone could help shape a more sustainable urban future for Lao PDR.

For travellers, a greener Vientiane offers the prospect of experiencing the Lao capital while benefiting from cleaner transport, improved urban services and a city increasingly conscious of its environmental responsibilities.

Scoot Opens the Door to Guiyang: Discover China’s Scenic Southwest from Australia

Scoot Pikachu Jet
Australian travellers looking for a new destination in China will soon have another exciting option, with Scoot announcing new flights to Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province.

From 26 October 2026, the Singapore Airlines Group low-cost carrier will operate three weekly flights to Guiyang, opening a new gateway for Australian travellers wanting to discover one of southwest China’s emerging tourism destinations.

With one-way Economy Class fares starting from AUD270 from Perth and AUD300 from Sydney and Melbourne, inclusive of taxes, the new Scoot Guiyang flights offer another potentially attractive option for travellers planning a China holiday.

The new route also strengthens Scoot’s growing China network while expanding opportunities for Australian travellers to connect through Singapore and explore more of Asia.

Guiyang: A New Chinese Destination to Discover

Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou province and provides a gateway to a region renowned for dramatic mountain scenery, lush landscapes, distinctive cultures and spectacular natural attractions.

Unlike China's better-known tourism cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, Guiyang offers visitors an opportunity to explore a less familiar side of the country.

The city combines modern urban life with historic neighbourhoods, traditional culture and easy access to some of Guizhou's most impressive natural and heritage attractions.

For Australian travellers who have already visited China's major cities, or those searching for a different China travel experience, Guiyang could prove an intriguing new destination.

New Scoot Flights to Guiyang from October 2026

Scoot will commence three times weekly flights to Guiyang from 26 October 2026.

The new service will be operated by Airbus A320neo aircraft and forms part of Scoot's Northern Winter 2026/2027 schedule.

According to the airline's announcement, one-way Economy Class fares to Guiyang start from:

  • AUD270 from Perth
  • AUD300 from Sydney
  • AUD300 from Melbourne

The fares are inclusive of taxes.

Flights are available for booking through Scoot's website, mobile application and progressively through other booking channels.

Travellers should check the latest fare conditions, baggage allowances and flight schedules before booking, as fares and schedules can change and flights remain subject to government and regulatory approvals.

Explore the Historic Qingyan Ancient Town

Scoot 787
One of the attractions highlighted by Scoot is Qingyan Ancient Town, one of the best-preserved historic towns in Guizhou.

Located near Guiyang, Qingyan provides visitors with an opportunity to step away from modern China and experience traditional architecture, historic streets and cultural heritage.

The town's atmospheric lanes and stone buildings make it an appealing destination for travellers interested in Chinese history, architecture and photography.

Qingyan can also provide an excellent introduction to the distinctive character of Guizhou before travellers venture further into the province.

Discover Huangguoshu Waterfall

For nature lovers, one of Guizhou's major attractions is Huangguoshu Waterfall.

Located southwest of Guiyang, the spectacular waterfall is one of the largest in Asia and is surrounded by dramatic mountain and river landscapes.

The scale of Huangguoshu makes it one of the standout natural attractions in southwest China.

For Australian travellers accustomed to Australia's spectacular waterfalls, coastlines and national parks, visiting Huangguoshu provides an opportunity to experience a dramatically different natural environment.

A visit can also be combined with exploring other landscapes and cultural attractions throughout Guizhou province.

A Region of Mountains, Culture and Green Landscapes

Guizhou is particularly appealing for travellers who enjoy nature and cultural experiences.

The province is characterised by mountains, valleys, forests, waterfalls and rivers, while its diverse ethnic communities contribute to a rich cultural landscape.

Visitors can discover traditional villages, local food, festivals, handicrafts and distinctive architectural traditions while travelling through the region.

For travellers increasingly looking beyond conventional sightseeing, this combination of nature and culture makes Guizhou an intriguing destination for a longer China itinerary.

Scoot Expands Its China Network

Scoot Cabin Crew
The Guiyang announcement is part of a wider expansion of Scoot's Asia-Pacific network.

With the addition of Guiyang, Scoot says it will operate 81 weekly flights to 16 cities in mainland China.

The airline's overall network will expand to 86 destinations across 18 countries and territories spanning the Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Europe.

Scoot's expanding network provides Australian travellers with additional opportunities to use Singapore as a gateway to destinations throughout Asia.

For travellers who enjoy combining destinations, a Guiyang holiday could potentially be incorporated into a wider itinerary that includes Singapore or other Asian cities served by Scoot, subject to available connections and booking arrangements.

More Scoot Flights Across Asia-Pacific

Guiyang is not the only destination receiving additional capacity.

As part of its Northern Winter 2026/2027 schedule, running from 26 October 2026 to 29 April 2027, Scoot is increasing frequencies on several routes in response to anticipated year-end travel demand.

The airline has announced progressive increases to destinations including Hat Yai, Phuket, Clark, Kota Kinabalu, Okinawa and Tiruchirappalli.

Scoot is also introducing larger aircraft progressively on flights to Phu Quoc.

The announced frequency changes include Hat Yai increasing from 12 to 14 weekly flights, Phuket from 17 to 21, Clark from seven to 10 weekly flights from December 2026, Kota Kinabalu from 10 to 13 weekly flights from January 2027 and Okinawa from four to five weekly flights.

Tiruchirappalli will increase from 12 to 14 weekly flights from December 2026, while Phu Quoc will have daily flights with a gradual transition from Embraer E190-E2 aircraft to aircraft from the Airbus A320 family.

Why Guiyang Could Be the Next Big China Travel Discovery

The introduction of direct Scoot services to Guiyang from Singapore is significant for Australian travellers because it provides a new route into a part of China that has considerable potential for international tourism.

Guizhou offers a different travel experience from China's traditional gateway cities.

Its combination of dramatic landscapes, minority cultures, historic towns and outdoor attractions makes it particularly suitable for travellers seeking authentic cultural and nature-based experiences.

The new flights also arrive at a time when Australian travellers are increasingly looking for new destinations across Asia.

Affordable airfares, expanding airline networks and easier connections are making it possible to explore destinations that previously required more complicated itineraries.

Plan a China Holiday with Guiyang at the Centre

Scoot E190 E2
A visit to Guiyang can form part of a broader southwest China itinerary.

Travellers could begin in Guiyang before exploring Qingyan Ancient Town and continuing towards Huangguoshu Waterfall.

Depending on the length of the holiday, visitors could then explore other parts of Guizhou and experience its mountain scenery, villages, food and cultural attractions.

The destination could appeal particularly to independent travellers, couples, photographers, adventure seekers, food lovers and visitors who have already explored China's major cities.

For Australian travellers, the new Scoot service also creates the possibility of combining Guiyang with Singapore or another Asian destination as part of a multi-destination holiday.

More Choice for Australian Travellers

Scoot's new Guiyang service demonstrates how the aviation network across Asia continues to evolve.

For Australian travellers, additional routes mean more choice when planning holidays and more opportunities to discover destinations away from traditional tourism circuits.

Perth travellers will have access to advertised one-way fares from AUD270, while travellers from Sydney and Melbourne can access advertised one-way fares from AUD300, inclusive of taxes.

Actual fares will depend on travel dates, availability, fare type and any additional services selected.

As always, travellers should check the current fare and flight information directly with the airline before making travel arrangements.

Guiyang Beckons from October 2026

From 26 October 2026, Guiyang will become part of Scoot's expanding international network, offering Australian travellers a new way to discover the mountains, waterfalls, historic towns and cultural richness of Guizhou.

The new three-times-weekly service provides an exciting opportunity to explore a less familiar side of China while benefiting from Scoot's expanding Asia-Pacific network.

For travellers searching for new places to visit in China, Guiyang deserves a place on the list.

With Qingyan Ancient Town, Huangguoshu Waterfall, spectacular mountain landscapes and a rich multicultural heritage, Guizhou offers the kind of destination experience that can turn a conventional China holiday into something much more memorable.

MENA Tourism Eyes Chinese Traveller Recovery as Outbound Demand Shows Resilience Ahead of ATM 2026

Dubai
The Middle East and North Africa tourism industry is preparing for the gradual return of Chinese travellers, with new research revealing that China's outbound travel market remains remarkably resilient despite recent geopolitical disruption.

Research from Dragon Trail International, Official Research Partner of Arabian Travel Market, indicates that Chinese outbound travel demand strengthened during the first half of 2026, creating renewed opportunities for destinations across the MENA region.

With Arabian Travel Market 2026 taking place from 14 to 17 September at u.World Trade Centre, the Chinese market is expected to be an important topic of discussion as tourism organisations assess changing traveller behaviour and prepare for the next phase of international tourism growth.

Chinese Outbound Travel Continues to Strengthen

China remains one of the world's most important outbound tourism markets, and the latest research suggests that demand for international travel continues to build.

According to research conducted by Dragon Trail International for ATM 2026, 77 per cent of surveyed Chinese travel agents reported higher outbound travel demand during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

Summer travel demand has also strengthened, with 70 per cent of surveyed travel agents reporting an increase in outbound summer travel demand year-on-year.

Official figures from China's National Immigration Administration provide further evidence of the market's resilience. Border crossings by mainland Chinese citizens increased by 10.7 per cent during the first half of 2026.

For MENA tourism destinations, these figures indicate that the appetite for international travel remains strong and that the region has an opportunity to reconnect with Chinese visitors as confidence gradually improves.

Geopolitical Events Have Temporarily Changed Travel Patterns

The Middle East tourism industry has not been immune to the effects of geopolitical uncertainty.

Recent developments temporarily affected Chinese demand for travel to parts of the region, highlighting the importance of safety and stability when Chinese consumers make international travel decisions.

Dragon Trail International expects the recovery of Chinese travel to the Middle East to take time, with market momentum potentially strengthening into 2027 if regional stability continues.

Chinese government travel advisories covering GCC countries have now been lifted, providing an important foundation for destinations seeking to rebuild traveller confidence.

For tourism organisations, the next stage will involve communicating clearly with potential visitors and demonstrating that destinations are ready to welcome Chinese travellers with appropriate services, experiences and support.

Luxury Travel Could Lead the Recovery

ATM 2026
Luxury tourism is emerging as one of the most promising opportunities for MENA destinations seeking to attract Chinese visitors.

The Dragon Trail International research identifies luxury travel as the segment most likely to recover first, with 42 per cent of Chinese travel agents identifying high-net-worth travellers as having the strongest recovery potential.

This is particularly relevant to the Middle East, where destinations such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have invested heavily in luxury hotels, resorts, retail, gastronomy, entertainment and bespoke travel experiences.

The region's established reputation for premium hospitality provides a strong foundation for attracting Chinese luxury travellers looking for high-quality international experiences.

Luxury tourism can also generate significant economic value through longer stays, premium accommodation, high-end shopping, private experiences and personalised travel services.

FIT Travellers Offer Another Major Opportunity

Fully independent travel, or FIT, is another important segment identified by the research.

Forty per cent of Chinese travel agents surveyed highlighted FIT travel as having strong recovery potential.

The growing importance of independent travellers reflects the changing Chinese outbound tourism market, where many experienced travellers are increasingly interested in designing their own itineraries and seeking more personalised experiences.

For MENA destinations, this creates opportunities to promote flexible itineraries that combine culture, food, shopping, luxury accommodation, adventure, wellness and entertainment.

Digital marketing and Chinese-language travel information will also be increasingly important as independent travellers research and book their journeys.

Younger Chinese Travellers Are Reshaping Demand

Younger travellers are another segment with significant potential.

The research identified younger travellers as one of the groups offering strong recovery opportunities, with 38 per cent of respondents highlighting this market.

Younger Chinese visitors can bring different expectations to international travel. They are often highly engaged with digital content and social media and may place greater emphasis on unique experiences, local culture, food, entertainment and shareable travel moments.

For MENA destinations, attracting younger travellers may therefore require marketing that goes beyond traditional destination imagery.

The region's contemporary architecture, desert experiences, cultural attractions, food scenes, adventure activities and luxury lifestyle offerings can all form part of a more diverse proposition.

Shorter Booking Windows Change the Marketing Strategy

ATM 2026
Another significant finding from the research is the changing way Chinese travellers are booking international trips.

Chinese travellers are increasingly making decisions within shorter booking windows, while demand for single-destination itineraries is also increasing.

This presents both challenges and opportunities for MENA tourism organisations.

Shorter booking periods mean destinations need to maintain an active and responsive presence in the Chinese market rather than relying solely on long-term promotional campaigns.

Tourism businesses must also ensure that accurate destination information, availability and booking options are easily accessible when consumers are ready to make a decision.

Single-destination travel can benefit destinations capable of offering enough experiences to encourage visitors to stay longer rather than combining several countries or cities into one trip.

Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and the UAE Stand Out

The research identifies several MENA destinations with strong potential in the Chinese market.

Chinese travel agents identified Türkiye as having the strongest growth potential following the introduction of visa-free travel for Chinese visitors.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also continue to be viewed as destinations with significant long-term opportunities, particularly in the luxury travel sector.

The UAE has already established itself as one of the region's leading international tourism destinations, with Dubai offering extensive air connectivity, luxury accommodation, shopping, entertainment, business events and leisure experiences.

Saudi Arabia is undergoing an ambitious transformation of its tourism sector and is developing new destinations, cultural experiences and luxury tourism products as part of its broader tourism development strategy.

Building Traveller Confidence Will Be Essential

While Chinese outbound demand remains strong, rebuilding confidence in travel to the Middle East will be an important priority.

Safety remains a major consideration for Chinese travellers, meaning tourism organisations need to communicate effectively and transparently about destination conditions.

The recovery will also depend on maintaining strong air connectivity and ensuring that travel businesses can provide the services Chinese visitors expect.

Destination marketing organisations and tourism companies will need to understand the changing preferences of Chinese travellers and adapt their strategies accordingly.

As competition for Chinese visitors increases, simply being visible in the market will not be enough. Destinations will need to demonstrate why their experiences are relevant to today's Chinese traveller.

ATM 2026 to Explore the Chinese Tourism Opportunity

ATM 2026
These issues will be explored in greater depth at Arabian Travel Market 2026 in Dubai.

Sienna Parulis-Cook, Director of Marketing and Communications at Dragon Trail International, will present exclusive new research during ATM 2026 in a session titled "Welcoming Back the Chinese Tourism Market: Insights for the Middle East".

The session will take place on the Future Stage and will examine destinations attracting interest from Chinese consumers, the channels influencing travel decisions and the experiences Chinese travellers are seeking across the MENA region.

For tourism organisations, the session will provide valuable insight into how consumer behaviour is evolving and how destinations can refine their strategies to capture renewed Chinese demand.

China's Presence at ATM 2026

China will have a strong presence at Arabian Travel Market 2026, with exhibitors including the Macao Government Tourism Office, China Cultural Center in the UAE, DerbySoft Inc., The Garden Hotel Company Ltd., Guangzhou, China Highlights International Travel Service Co., Ltd. and HeyTrip International Limited.

The presence of Chinese tourism organisations and travel businesses will provide further opportunities for networking, partnership development and market intelligence.

ATM 2026 is also expanding its overall exhibition footprint in response to strong international demand, with Asia's presence projected to increase by 14 per cent.

A New Chapter for MENA and Chinese Tourism

The gradual return of Chinese visitors could become an important growth opportunity for the MENA tourism industry.

China's outbound travel market remains resilient, while changing consumer preferences are creating new opportunities across luxury travel, FIT tourism and younger visitor segments.

For destinations across the Middle East and North Africa, the challenge will be to rebuild confidence, understand the evolving Chinese traveller and develop targeted marketing strategies that communicate the region's strongest experiences.

The opportunity is significant.

As Chinese outbound tourism continues to expand, destinations that prepare early, build strong partnerships and deliver relevant experiences will be better positioned to benefit from the next phase of international travel growth.

Arabian Travel Market 2026 will provide an important forum for this conversation, bringing together destinations, airlines, hotels, travel companies, tourism organisations and industry experts to examine the forces shaping the future of global tourism.

Arabian Travel Market 2026

Arabian Travel Market 2026 will be held from 14 to 17 September 2026 at Dubai World Trade Centre in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The 2026 event is centred on the theme "Travel 2040: Driving New Frontiers Through Innovation and Technology", examining the innovation, technology and emerging trends expected to shape the future of international tourism.

The event will provide an important meeting point for MENA tourism organisations and international travel businesses seeking to understand changing source markets, strengthen partnerships and identify new opportunities.

Laos and China Strengthen Mekong Partnership with US$3.31 Million in Sustainable Development Projects

Chinese Ambassador to Laos Fang Hong and
Lao Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Maithong
Thammavongsa signing cooperation agreements in Vientiane
Regional cooperation across the Greater Mekong region continues to gather momentum, with the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) and China signing agreements for seven new Mekong-Lancang Special Fund projects valued at US$3.31 million. The latest investment highlights the ongoing commitment of both nations to sustainable development, community wellbeing and stronger regional partnerships.

For travellers interested in the future of Southeast Asia, these initiatives demonstrate how international cooperation is helping preserve natural resources, improve livelihoods and create long-term opportunities for communities across the Mekong region.

Seven New Projects to Support Sustainable Growth

The cooperation agreements were signed on 16 June 2026 during a formal ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vientiane, the capital of Laos.

Representing the Lao Government was Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Maithong Thammavongsa, while Chinese Ambassador to the Lao PDR Fang Hong signed on behalf of the Chinese Government. Representatives from several Lao ministries attended the ceremony as official witnesses, reflecting the importance of the new development initiatives.

The seven approved projects will receive a combined investment of US$3.31 million under the ninth batch of the Mekong-Lancang Special Fund (MLSF) for 2026.

Investing in Communities Across Laos

The newly funded projects focus on areas that directly improve the quality of life for local communities and support long-term national development.

Funding will be directed towards human resource development, helping to strengthen education, training and workforce skills. Additional projects will support sustainable agriculture, improved water resources management, enhanced public health services and poverty reduction programmes.

These initiatives are designed to create lasting benefits for communities while supporting Laos' broader economic and social development goals.

Understanding the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Framework

The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) framework was established in 2016 to strengthen collaboration among the six countries connected by the Mekong River system.

Its member nations include Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Together, these countries work to promote sustainable development, improve regional connectivity, encourage economic cooperation and protect the valuable natural resources of the Mekong Basin.

The Mekong-Lancang Special Fund was launched by China in the same year and began financing development projects in 2017. Since then, it has become an important source of practical support for initiatives that improve livelihoods throughout the region.

A Decade of Successful Development Cooperation

Luang Prabang Night Market in Laos
The latest agreements build upon an impressive record of cooperation between Laos and China.

Over the past ten years, Laos has received funding for 100 development projects with a combined value exceeding US$26 million through the Mekong-Lancang Special Fund.

These projects have contributed to improvements across numerous sectors, including education, agriculture, healthcare, environmental management, infrastructure and poverty alleviation.

The continuing partnership demonstrates the shared commitment of participating countries to achieving sustainable and inclusive growth throughout the Mekong region.

Supporting the Future of Sustainable Tourism

For the tourism industry, sustainable development initiatives such as these are particularly significant.

Healthy river systems, thriving rural communities, improved public services and sustainable agricultural practices all contribute to creating attractive destinations for both domestic and international travellers.

As Laos continues to invest in environmental management and community development, visitors can expect to experience authentic cultural attractions alongside increasingly sustainable tourism experiences that benefit local people and protect the country's extraordinary natural heritage.

Building a Stronger Mekong Region

Officials from both governments expressed confidence that the newly approved projects will further strengthen regional cooperation while delivering tangible benefits to communities throughout Laos.

By investing in education, agriculture, healthcare, water management and poverty reduction, the Mekong-Lancang Special Fund continues to play an important role in supporting socio-economic development and improving quality of life across the region.

As cooperation between the six Mekong-Lancang member countries continues to expand, these initiatives highlight how international partnerships can contribute to a more sustainable, resilient and prosperous future for one of Asia's most fascinating and culturally rich regions.

Fresh tropical flavours, vibrant cultural connections and growing regional cooperation are taking centre stage in southern China as Guangxi launches the landmark "ASEAN Fruits Gather in Guangxi" event. Designed to strengthen trade, tourism and cultural exchange between China and ASEAN nations, the initiative is transforming Guangxi into a major gateway for some of Asia's most celebrated tropical fruits while creating exciting new opportunities for visitors to experience the region's rich culinary heritage.

Held at the Nanning International Railway Port, the 2026 event highlights the growing partnership between China and ASEAN countries, combining agriculture, logistics, technology and tourism in a celebration of regional cooperation. For travellers, it also showcases Guangxi as an emerging destination where food, culture and international trade come together.

A New Gateway for ASEAN Fruit Trade

The official launch of the "Sharing a Large Market – Exporting to China" campaign, under the theme "ASEAN Fruits Gather in Guangxi," demonstrates Guangxi's strategic role in connecting Southeast Asia with one of the world's largest consumer markets.

Leaders from China, Vietnam, Timor-Leste and other ASEAN countries attended the opening ceremony, emphasising the importance of strengthening economic partnerships while creating smoother trade links for high-quality agricultural products.

The initiative is expected to improve market access for premium tropical fruits while supporting producers, exporters and businesses throughout the ASEAN region.

For visitors, the growing fruit trade also enhances Guangxi's reputation as a destination where travellers can experience an incredible variety of fresh produce from across Southeast Asia.

Celebrating the Flavours of Southeast Asia

One of the event's highlights is the remarkable showcase of ASEAN's famous tropical fruits.

Countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines and Timor-Leste presented their signature fruit varieties through exhibitions, promotional videos and cultural presentations.

Visitors can discover an extraordinary selection of tropical delicacies including durian, mangosteen, dragon fruit, mangoes, rambutan, longan, pomelo, jackfruit and many other regional specialities.

These colourful displays celebrate not only agricultural excellence but also the cultural diversity that makes ASEAN one of the world's most exciting culinary destinations.

Guangxi Strengthens Its Position as a Regional Trade Hub

Located on China's southern border, Guangxi has become one of the country's most important gateways for trade with Southeast Asia.

Its modern transport infrastructure, including railways, highways, ports and logistics centres, enables fresh fruit to move quickly from orchards across ASEAN into markets throughout China.

The regular operation of cross-border refrigerated freight trains represents another significant milestone, helping preserve product quality while reducing transport times.

This efficient logistics network supports farmers, exporters and consumers while also encouraging greater regional connectivity.

Technology Powers the Future of Agriculture

The initiative extends well beyond traditional trade by embracing digital innovation and smart agriculture.

Officials highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital technology and cold chain logistics.

Emerging technologies such as AI-assisted orchard monitoring, smart supply chain management and market forecasting are expected to improve efficiency while reducing waste throughout the fruit industry.

China Post also announced nationwide online sales campaigns and themed livestream promotions across ten provinces, introducing ASEAN fruits to millions of Chinese consumers through digital platforms.

The integration of technology with agriculture demonstrates how modern innovation is reshaping international food trade.

Tourism and Culinary Experiences Go Hand in Hand

For travellers, the event highlights another compelling reason to visit Guangxi.

Food tourism continues to grow worldwide, with visitors increasingly seeking authentic culinary experiences that reflect local culture and regional traditions.

Nanning and Guangxi offer excellent opportunities to explore bustling produce markets, vibrant food festivals, traditional restaurants and cross-border culinary influences that blend Chinese and Southeast Asian flavours.

Visitors can enjoy seasonal fruit tastings while learning about the agricultural traditions and cultural heritage that define the region.

These experiences add another dimension to Guangxi's appeal as both a business and leisure destination.

Diplomatic representatives from ASEAN countries emphasised the importance of improving transport links, customs procedures and cross-border e-commerce to facilitate future growth.

Projects focusing on rail, road, sea freight and smart border systems will further strengthen regional integration while supporting tourism and commercial exchanges.

The event also encouraged new business partnerships through project signings between Chinese and ASEAN companies, opening fresh opportunities for cooperation across the agricultural supply chain.

This growing collaboration reflects the increasingly close relationship between China and ASEAN nations across trade, culture and tourism.

A Festival That Showcases Regional Unity

The 2026 "ASEAN Fruits Gather in Guangxi" program features six major themes designed to promote cooperation, innovation and consumer engagement.

Activities include diplomatic presentations introducing national fruit specialities, exhibitions highlighting Guangxi's expanding trade infrastructure, digital marketing initiatives, fruit tasting experiences and project signing ceremonies that strengthen future partnerships.

Together, these activities celebrate not only the region's exceptional agricultural products but also the shared commitment to economic growth, cultural exchange and sustainable regional development.

Why Guangxi Deserves a Place on Your China Travel Itinerary

As Guangxi continues strengthening its role as China's primary gateway to ASEAN, visitors are discovering a destination rich in culture, cuisine and natural beauty.

From the spectacular karst landscapes of Guilin and the picturesque Li River to the vibrant city of Nanning and its growing international trade centres, Guangxi offers travellers an authentic experience that combines traditional Chinese culture with the dynamic flavours of Southeast Asia.

The "ASEAN Fruits Gather in Guangxi" initiative adds another compelling attraction, giving food lovers, cultural explorers and business travellers an opportunity to experience one of Asia's most exciting cross-border success stories.
