Professor Ruwan Ranasinghe Honorable
Minister of Tourism for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has once again captured the world's attention, earning a series of prestigious international accolades that firmly establish the island as one of the best travel destinations for 2026. From being named the World's Best Island Destination to topping global wellness rankings, Sri Lanka continues to impress travellers, travel experts and leading tourism publications with its remarkable diversity, resilience and authentic hospitality.

Despite facing significant challenges over recent years, including the Easter attacks, the COVID-19 pandemic, economic difficulties and natural disasters, Sri Lanka has demonstrated extraordinary determination to rebuild and strengthen its tourism industry. Today, the island stands stronger than ever, welcoming visitors with unforgettable experiences that blend ancient culture, spectacular wildlife, tropical beaches, wellness retreats and warm hospitality.

A Remarkable Tourism Success Story

Sri Lanka's tourism industry has become a global example of resilience.

Working closely with airlines and international tourism partners, Sri Lanka Tourism has successfully adapted to changing global travel conditions by strengthening connections with European and Asian markets while maintaining confidence among international travellers.

Tourism remains the country's second-largest foreign exchange earner, playing a vital role in supporting local communities, creating employment opportunities and driving economic growth.

This ongoing success reflects the collaborative efforts of government agencies, tourism operators, airlines, hotels and local communities working together to ensure visitors continue to enjoy safe, memorable and high-quality travel experiences.

A Destination for Every Season

Sri Lanka
One of Sri Lanka's greatest strengths is its ability to offer outstanding travel experiences throughout the year.

Often described as a true 365-day destination, the island combines tropical beaches, cool mountain retreats, ancient cities, wildlife reserves and vibrant cultural festivals within a relatively compact area.

Travellers can enjoy surfing along the southern coastline, explore the misty tea plantations of the central highlands, embark on leopard safaris in Yala National Park, discover UNESCO World Heritage Sites or unwind at luxurious wellness retreats—all within a single holiday.

This incredible diversity continues to attract visitors seeking adventure, relaxation, culture and authentic local experiences.

International Recognition Places Sri Lanka in the Global Spotlight

Sri Lanka's growing popularity has been confirmed through an impressive series of international awards and endorsements received during 2026.

The island was named the No. 1 Trending Wellness Destination for 2026 by the BookRetreats.com State of Retreats 2026 Report, recognising Sri Lanka as a place where travellers can heal, restore and reconnect through holistic wellness experiences, Ayurveda traditions and peaceful natural surroundings.

Adventure travel company G Adventures also included Sri Lanka among the Top 10 Happiest Travel Destinations for 2026, praising its community-based tourism, slow travel experiences and meaningful interactions with local people.

Perhaps the most prestigious recognition came from Big 7 Travel, which crowned Sri Lanka the World's Best Island Destination for 2026 in its ranking of the 50 Best Islands in the World. Experts highlighted the genuine warmth of the Sri Lankan people together with the island's unique ability to combine adventure, relaxation, culture and wildlife within one unforgettable journey.

Sri Lanka
Travel + Leisure further strengthened Sri Lanka's global reputation by selecting it as one of the 50 Best Places to Travel in the World for 2026, recognising the country's exceptional wildlife, immersive cultural experiences and breathtaking natural beauty.

Meanwhile, U.S. News & World Report ranked Sri Lanka among the Top Five Places to Visit in Asia for 2026, highlighting its affordability and the remarkable variety of experiences available across the island, from heritage cities and tropical beaches to scenic mountain landscapes.

By July 2026, Sri Lanka had received more than 20 international endorsements and numerous tourism awards, demonstrating broad global confidence in the country's tourism industry.

A Strong Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

Sri Lanka's international success is supported by an increasing commitment to sustainable tourism development.

Across the island, eco-tourism initiatives, wildlife conservation programmes and community-based tourism projects are helping preserve Sri Lanka's extraordinary natural and cultural heritage while creating meaningful experiences for visitors.

Travellers are increasingly choosing experiences that benefit local communities, protect biodiversity and celebrate traditional culture, ensuring tourism contributes positively to both the environment and local livelihoods.

This responsible approach is helping position Sri Lanka as a destination where tourism growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.

Digital Innovation Reaching Global Audiences

Modern marketing strategies have played a major role in Sri Lanka's growing international visibility.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau has expanded its digital marketing campaigns through strategic partnerships with travel influencers, international media organisations, content creators and tourism professionals.

High-quality travel documentaries, engaging social media campaigns and global public relations initiatives have introduced Sri Lanka to millions of potential visitors, particularly younger travellers seeking authentic, immersive and experience-driven holidays.

These innovative promotional efforts continue to strengthen Sri Lanka's brand across key international markets.

Building on International Success

With worldwide recognition continuing to grow, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau is actively expanding its global promotional activities.

Strategic trade partnerships, international roadshows, digital advertising campaigns and public relations initiatives are helping maintain the country's strong international profile while encouraging new visitors to discover everything Sri Lanka has to offer.

Supported by endorsements from some of the world's most respected travel publications and tourism organisations, Sri Lanka is entering an exciting new chapter as one of the world's most desirable holiday destinations.

Preparations are also progressing for the 60th Anniversary of the International Sangha Conference, an important global gathering that highlights Sri Lanka's long-standing role as a centre of Buddhist heritage and spiritual learning.

These cultural initiatives continue to strengthen the country's appeal for travellers interested in history, religion and authentic local traditions.

The upcoming Sri Lanka MICE Expo and Professional Development Programme will provide additional opportunities to showcase the country's expanding conference infrastructure, luxury accommodation and world-class event services.

Developing the Tourism Leaders of Tomorrow

Behind every successful tourism destination is a highly skilled workforce, and the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) continues to play a vital role in developing the industry's future professionals.

As Sri Lanka's premier government-approved hospitality training institution, SLITHM operates campuses throughout the country, delivering academic qualifications and practical vocational programmes across every area of tourism and hospitality.

Sri Lanka: Asia's Rising Travel Star Where Ancient Wonders Meet Untamed Ad

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is rapidly becoming one of the world's most exciting travel destinations, offering an extraordinary blend of ancient history, breathtaking landscapes, wildlife encounters and warm hospitality. Once considered an extension to an Indian holiday, the island nation has firmly established itself as a destination worthy of its own dedicated journey.

With eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, spectacular national parks, mist-covered tea plantations, golden beaches and a fascinating multicultural heritage, Sri Lanka offers unforgettable experiences for every type of traveller. From adventurous hiking expeditions and thrilling wildlife safaris to luxury train journeys and coastal escapes, the island is capturing the attention of travellers and leading international tour operators alike.

A Stand-Alone Destination Worth Exploring

Travel experts increasingly regard Sri Lanka as one of Asia's premier independent travel destinations.

Luxury travel specialist Rumit Mehta, founder of Immersion Journeys and a respected Travel + Leisure A-List advisor, describes Sri Lanka as a destination that rewards travellers willing to explore beyond the traditional tourist trail.

Rather than simply visiting for a few days, more international visitors are choosing to spend one or two weeks discovering the island's remarkable diversity, moving from vibrant cities to mountain landscapes, ancient kingdoms and pristine coastlines within relatively short travelling distances.

Sri Lanka's successful post-conflict transformation, combined with significant investment in tourism infrastructure, has made the country more accessible than ever for international visitors.

Discover the Untouched Beauty of Northern Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka
For adventurous travellers seeking authentic cultural experiences, northern Sri Lanka offers an entirely different perspective on the island.

The historic city of Jaffna has emerged as one of the country's most fascinating destinations, where visitors can explore centuries-old Hindu temples, colonial architecture, colourful local markets and a distinctive Tamil culture that differs from other regions of Sri Lanka.

Less crowded than many southern destinations, Jaffna provides opportunities to discover hidden islands, quiet beaches, traditional cuisine and welcoming local communities while experiencing a side of Sri Lanka that many international visitors have yet to explore.

Walk Through the Highlands and Tea Country

Central Sri Lanka offers some of the island's most spectacular scenery.

The breathtaking Horton Plains National Park is a paradise for hikers, with well-maintained walking trails leading through cloud forests, grasslands and dramatic escarpments. One of the park's most famous attractions is World's End, where sheer cliffs drop almost 900 metres to the plains below, creating one of the country's most unforgettable viewpoints.

Nearby, the lush tea estates surrounding Nuwara Eliya and Ella invite visitors to experience the region's famous Ceylon tea heritage. Rolling green hills, historic tea factories and charming colonial-era bungalows create a landscape unlike anywhere else in Asia.

Travelling through the highlands by train is widely regarded as one of the world's most scenic rail journeys, passing waterfalls, mountain villages and endless tea plantations.

Adventure Along the Southern Coast

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's southern coastline offers endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation.

The vibrant beach town of Mirissa has become a favourite destination for sailing enthusiasts, with multi-day cruises exploring secluded beaches, crystal-clear waters and picturesque fishing villages such as Kudawella.

Cycling and guided walking tours allow visitors to discover hidden coastal communities, tropical forests and spectacular ocean views while experiencing authentic Sri Lankan village life away from the main tourist centres.

Surfing, whale watching, snorkelling and diving further enhance the region's reputation as one of the island's premier coastal destinations.

Wildlife Encounters Beyond Expectations

Sri Lanka is one of the best places in Asia to experience wildlife in its natural habitat.

Yala National Park is internationally recognised for having one of the world's highest densities of leopards, giving visitors an exceptional opportunity to observe these elusive big cats during professionally guided safaris.

The country's rich biodiversity extends far beyond its famous leopards. Elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer, monkeys and hundreds of bird species inhabit Sri Lanka's national parks and protected reserves.

For travellers seeking luxury wildlife experiences, Kotiyagala Luxury Villas offers exclusive accommodation surrounded by pristine wilderness. The boutique property features just 12 private villas, each with its own swimming pool, providing guests with exceptional comfort while remaining immersed in nature.

The surrounding forests support an impressive diversity of wildlife, including 44 mammal species and more than 215 recorded bird species, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and photographers.

Culture Shaped by Centuries of History

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's cultural richness is one of its greatest attractions.

The island's eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites showcase more than 2,000 years of civilisation, from the magnificent rock fortress of Sigiriya and the Sacred City of Anuradhapura to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy and the beautifully preserved Dutch colonial city of Galle.

The country's unique cultural identity has been shaped by Sinhalese, Tamil, Portuguese, Dutch and Burgher influences, creating a fascinating blend of architecture, cuisine, traditions and festivals rarely found elsewhere.

This multicultural heritage gives every region of Sri Lanka its own distinctive character and charm.

International Tour Operators Are Embracing Sri Lanka

The growing popularity of Sri Lanka is reflected in the increasing number of international travel companies introducing new itineraries.

Insight Vacations has launched an immersive 13-day journey through nine destinations, beginning with a colourful tuk-tuk tour of Colombo before exploring the island's cultural and natural highlights.

Trafalgar will introduce its first Sri Lanka tours in 2026, featuring iconic train journeys through tea country, wildlife safaris in Yala National Park and immersive cultural experiences.

Adventure travel companies continue expanding sailing, cycling and walking holidays throughout the island, reflecting growing international demand for authentic and active travel experiences.

Why Sri Lanka Should Be Your Next Journey

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka offers a remarkable combination of adventure, culture, wildlife, luxury and authentic local experiences within a compact and easily accessible destination.

Whether you're exploring the ancient cities of the Cultural Triangle, hiking through misty mountain landscapes, sailing along the southern coast, photographing leopards on safari or discovering the unique heritage of Jaffna, every journey reveals another fascinating chapter of this extraordinary island.

As more travellers discover its diversity, warm hospitality and world-class attractions, Sri Lanka is firmly establishing itself as one of the most rewarding travel destinations in Asia.

Sri Lanka Celebrates Historic Global Tourism Honour at Seoul International Travel Fair 2026

Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe
Sri Lanka has achieved another significant milestone on the international tourism stage with Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, Deputy Minister of Tourism, receiving the prestigious 2026 SITF Eminent Tourism Pioneer Award at the 41st Seoul International Travel Fair (SITF) in Seoul, South Korea.

Presented on 4 June 2026 at the historic IL-HWA-DANG, SamcheongGak in Seoul, the award recognises exceptional leadership, academic excellence and outstanding contributions to the global tourism industry. The honour places Sri Lanka among the world's leading tourism nations and highlights the country's growing influence in shaping the future of international travel.

A Landmark Achievement for Sri Lanka

The recognition of Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe represents a landmark moment in Sri Lanka's tourism history.

For the first time in the 41-year history of the Seoul International Travel Fair, a Sri Lankan has been selected to receive one of its most prestigious tourism awards. The achievement reflects not only Prof. Ranasinghe's personal dedication to tourism development but also the remarkable progress Sri Lanka has made in strengthening its international tourism profile.

The award further reinforces Sri Lanka's reputation as a destination that combines authentic cultural experiences, world-class hospitality, sustainable tourism initiatives and forward-thinking tourism policies.

One of the World's Most Respected Tourism Awards

Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe
The SITF Eminent Tourism Pioneer Award is regarded as one of the highest honours within the international tourism industry.

Recipients are selected through an extensive annual evaluation undertaken by the SITF Tourism Award Committee. The comprehensive assessment examines each nominee's academic achievements, industry leadership, policy development and long-term contribution to global tourism.

Only a small number of recipients are chosen each year following detailed research and careful scrutiny, making the award an exclusive recognition reserved for individuals who have made exceptional contributions to tourism worldwide.

In 2026, only six distinguished tourism leaders were honoured—three from the Republic of Korea and three international recipients—with Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe proudly representing Sri Lanka on the global stage.

Recognising Leadership in Tourism Development

The award acknowledges Prof. Ranasinghe's extensive contribution to tourism through both academic research and practical leadership.

His work has focused on strengthening Sri Lanka's tourism sector while promoting sustainable development, destination competitiveness, innovation and international collaboration.

By combining academic knowledge with government leadership, he has played an important role in supporting policies that position Sri Lanka as an attractive destination for leisure travellers, business events, cultural tourism and international investment.

The international recognition also reflects the Sri Lankan Government's commitment to developing tourism as a key pillar of national economic growth.

A Proud Moment for Sri Lanka

Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe
Following the presentation, Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe expressed his appreciation for the international recognition.

He described the award as both a personal honour and an important acknowledgement of Sri Lanka's growing reputation as one of Asia's premier travel destinations.

Prof. Ranasinghe thanked the organisers, tourism partners and industry colleagues for their continued commitment to strengthening global tourism and reaffirmed his dedication to promoting Sri Lanka's unique tourism experiences to international visitors.

He emphasised that tourism continues to serve as a powerful bridge between cultures while creating opportunities for economic development, international cooperation and lasting global friendships.

Strengthening Sri Lanka's Global Tourism Profile

The international recognition comes at an important time for Sri Lanka's tourism industry as the country continues to expand its presence in key global markets.

With its diverse landscapes, ancient heritage, pristine beaches, wildlife experiences, luxury accommodation and renowned hospitality, Sri Lanka is increasingly attracting visitors seeking authentic and meaningful travel experiences.

Recognition at prestigious international events such as the Seoul International Travel Fair enhances the country's credibility within the global tourism community while encouraging stronger partnerships with international travel professionals, airlines, tour operators and investors.

Awards of this calibre also help reinforce Sri Lanka's image as a destination committed to excellence, innovation and sustainable tourism development.

Looking Towards the Future

Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe
The 2026 SITF Eminent Tourism Pioneer Award is more than a personal achievement—it represents international recognition of Sri Lanka's broader vision for the future of tourism.

As the country continues to invest in sustainable growth, destination development, research, education and international collaboration, Sri Lanka is strengthening its position as one of Asia's emerging tourism leaders.

This historic honour demonstrates that Sri Lanka's contributions to global tourism extend beyond its natural beauty and cultural attractions, highlighting the country's growing influence in tourism leadership, policy development and academic excellence.

With increasing international recognition and continued commitment to innovation, Sri Lanka is well positioned to inspire travellers, industry professionals and tourism researchers for many years to come.
