Malta holds its Michelin magic: Seven starred restaurants confirmed for 2026, one new Bib Gourmand, and five newly recommended venues
Leading the charge, ION Harbour (Malta), by celebrated British chef Simon Rogan, retains its two Michelin Stars, maintaining its place as one of the Mediterranean's most distinguished dining destinations. In addition, six restaurants hold their Michelin Star: Rosamì (St. Julian's), Fernandõ Gastrotheque (Sliema), Under Grain (Valletta), Noni (Valletta), De Mondion (Mdina) and Le GV (Sliema).
Malta's Bib Gourmand category also continues to grow, with five restaurants now recognised for delivering high-quality cooking at accessible price points. Verbena in Mġarr earns the accolade for the first time this year, joining AYU (Gzira), Grain Street (Valletta), Rubino (Valletta) and Commando (Mellieħa).
Five venues join the recommended list, reflecting the breadth of culinary talent found across the islands: Osteria Scottadito (Nadur), Bistro Boca (Ta' Xbiex), Anima (St Julian's), Le Majoliche (St Julian's) and Scala (Mdina).
Three culinary professionals were also honoured with Michelin Special Awards, recognising excellence beyond the plate:
Young Chef Award – George Attard, Level Nine at The Grand, Gozo. At just 31, Attard returned to his native Gozo in 2025 to lead Level Nine at The Grand, perched atop the Grand Hotel Gozo overlooking Mgarr harbour. His distinctly contemporary Mediterranean menu blends local inspiration with modern technique and pure, authentic flavours.
Service Award – Rosamì, led by Charlo Cachia. Set inside a magnificent Maltese-style villa overlooking Balluta Bay, Rosamì's experienced and passionate front-of-house team delivers a seamless gastronomic journey — from warm welcome to fond farewell.
Sommelier Award – Miljan Radonjic, De Mondion, Mdina. Recognised for his gracious manner and deep wine expertise, Radonjic has become a quiet star of Malta's fine dining scene, known for thoughtful pairings that elevate every meal at the Michelin-starred De Mondion.
Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, said: “The recognition bestowed upon Malta in the 2026 Michelin Guide reaffirms the islands’ standing as a destination synonymous with quality, authenticity, and refined experiences. The retention of all seven starred restaurants, together with the expansion of recommended establishments and special award recipients, reflects the dedication, innovation, and professionalism of our culinary community. Gastronomy is a central pillar of Malta’s premium tourism strategy, and these distinctions strengthen our international reputation as a destination that consistently delivers excellence to discerning travellers.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Hon. Ian Borg said: “These accolades highlight the tangible progress Malta continues to achieve in elevating its tourism product. Culinary excellence plays a vital role in shaping a destination’s identity and competitiveness, and the sustained success of our MICHELIN-recognised establishments demonstrates this shared commitment to higher standards across the industry. As we move forward, our strategy remains firmly centred on attracting high-value visitors while ensuring that our tourism growth is rooted in sustainability, authenticity, and a consistently superior level of service for visitors and locals alike.”
Smaller than Greater Sydney, Malta punches well above its culinary weight. With seven Michelin-starred restaurants spread across the archipelago, visitors can combine world-class fine dining with UNESCO-listed historic towns and the Mediterranean coastline, all within easy reach.

Malta: A Mediterranean Gem Calling Australian and New Zealand Travellers
![]() |
| Malta |
A Taste of Malta
Maltese cuisine is a delectable fusion of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours, shaped by centuries of trade, migration, and colonisation. Every bite tells a story, from rustic street food to refined dining experiences.
A Culinary Crossroads
Italian & Sicilian Influence – With its close ties to Italy, Malta’s cuisine features pasta, tomatoes, olive oil, and seafood. The island is home to the indigenous tal-Bidnija olive, which produces exquisite olive oil. Traditional dishes like timpana (baked macaroni pie) and kapunata (Maltese ratatouille) put a unique Maltese spin on beloved Mediterranean flavours.
Arabic & North African Roots – The influence of Arab rule is evident in Malta’s use of spices like cumin, coriander, and cinnamon, as well as ingredients like dates and almonds. Mqaret (crispy date fritters) and couscous-based dishes are testament to these deep cultural ties.
British Influence – Malta’s history as a British colony until 1964 introduced a love of tea and foods like corned beef, which found its way into traditional Maltese fare. The popular hobz biz-zejt (Maltese bread with tuna, tomato paste, and capers) reflects this heritage.
Greek Flair – The use of honey, cheese, and filo pastry in Maltese cuisine draws clear parallels to Greek gastronomy. Gbejniet, a traditional Maltese sheep or goat cheese, and pastizzi, savoury filo pastries filled with ricotta or mushy peas, highlight these connections.
Raise a Glass to Malta’s Exclusive Wines
Beyond its exceptional food, Malta is home to a thriving wine scene with varieties that can only be found on the islands. The indigenous Gellewza and Girgentina grape varieties produce some of the Mediterranean’s most distinctive wines.
Malta’s vineyards, scattered across both Malta and Gozo, benefit from fertile soil, coastal breezes, and abundant sunshine, creating ideal conditions for winemaking. Whether you prefer a bold red, a crisp white, or a delicate rosé, Malta’s wineries promise a unique tasting experience. Visitors can explore rolling vineyards, sample handcrafted wines, and pair them with local specialties like fresh cheeses and olive oil.
For an immersive experience, step inside 400-year-old wine cellars and learn about Malta’s traditional production methods. A glass of wine enjoyed in the heart of the countryside or along a coastal terrace offers a taste of the island’s rich viticultural legacy.
A Year-Round Mediterranean Escape

| Malta |
Malta’s crystal-clear waters also make it a diver’s paradise, offering underwater caves, reefs, and wrecks that attract enthusiasts from around the world. For those who prefer to stay above the waves, the island’s beaches and boat tours provide endless opportunities to soak up the Mediterranean’s turquoise beauty.
With festivals and events happening throughout the year—from traditional feasts and cultural celebrations to world-class music festivals—there’s never a dull moment in Malta. Whether you're drawn by its history, culinary experiences, or sun-drenched shores, Malta promises an unforgettable escape for Australian and New Zealand travellers eager to discover a new Mediterranean gem.

Gozo: Malta’s Hidden Gem
![]() |
| Gozo |
A Rural Escape Full of Charm
Gozo is a refreshing alternative to the bustling mainland, with its lush green landscapes and sparsely populated villages. The island invites visitors to immerse themselves in its rustic lifestyle. Traditional experiences, such as goat and sheep milking, showcase Gozo’s agricultural roots. Watch as the fresh milk is transformed into delicious Gozitan cheese, a local delicacy.
Accommodation options on the island cater to all tastes, ranging from luxurious 5-star hotels to cozy hostels. For those seeking a more authentic experience, traditional farmhouses—many complete with private pools—offer a serene retreat in the countryside.
A Treasure Trove of History
History enthusiasts will find plenty to marvel at in Gozo. The island is home to the Ggantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world’s oldest freestanding temples. These awe-inspiring megalithic structures, set amidst lush countryside, were once thought to have been built by giants due to the enormous size of the stones.
Nearby, the Ta’ Kola Windmill provides an intimate glimpse into Gozo’s past. This beautifully preserved windmill demonstrates how Gozitans of yesteryear ground wheat to make bread and other staples.
Another must-visit is the recently restored Cittadella, an ancient fortified town perched atop one of Gozo’s iconic three hills. Overlooking the capital city of Victoria, Cittadella is a labyrinth of narrow streets, historic bastions, and a stunning cathedral, offering panoramic views of the island.
Culinary Delights Await
Gozo is a paradise for food lovers. Its culinary scene includes Michelin-recognized restaurants and charming local eateries serving traditional Maltese cuisine. Many establishments use fresh, locally grown produce, often sourced from family-owned farms. Seafood lovers will delight in the daily catch brought in by Gozo’s fishing boats, ensuring the freshest flavors.
Adventures and Natural Wonders
Gozo is not just for history and food enthusiasts; it’s also a haven for adventure seekers and nature lovers. The island’s dramatic cliffs and countryside are perfect for hiking, offering scenic routes and spectacular views. One highlight is the Inland Sea at Dwejra, a serene spot renowned for its stargazing opportunities, as it’s free from light pollution.
During the summer months, Gozo comes alive with vibrant festivals, and for those looking for nightlife, a handful of clubs provide entertainment well into the night.
The Allure of Comino
Just a 10-minute boat ride from Gozo lies Comino, a tiny island with a big reputation. Famous for its Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon, Comino’s crystal-clear waters attract swimmers, snorkelers, and divers from around the world. The island is also home to the Santa Marija Tower, a 17th-century watchtower built by the Knights of St. John. The tower, along with Comino’s Isolation Hospital, offers fascinating insights into the island’s storied past. With only one permanent family residing on Comino, the island retains a sense of adventure and seclusion, making it an idyllic day trip or overnight camping destination.

Handwritten Collection Celebrates Its First Anniversary With a Dozen Fascinating and Heart-Warming Hotels
![]() |
| Hotel Morris Sydney |
“Much like a handwritten note, the signature style of each host at a Handwritten Collection hotel is what guests remember and what really sets the brand apart,” said James Wheatcroft, Global SVP Midscale Brands, Accor. “This resonates strongly with travelers who are eager to experience their destinations more fully. Handwritten Collection taps into a growing desire for unique hotels with charm and personality, while delivering the assurance of Accor's high standards of hospitality and globally renowned membership benefits.”
The hoteliers, or hosts, of the Handwritten Collection are passionate people who welcome guests into their world. The personal touches that each host shares with guests reflect their tastes, interests, and little quirks of their personalities. Guests discover these touchpoints at various moments throughout their stay. A culinary specialty, a unique cocktail, a design motif, or the welcome of a friendly pet – these are just a few of the ways Handwritten Collection hotels express the personal traits and passions of their hosts.
“We designed Handwritten Collection to support the growing number of independent hotels in the midscale segment who are keen to leverage the powerful benefits of a leading global hotel group, while retaining the unique character they have curated”, said Camil Yazbeck, Global Chief Development Officer, Premium, Midscale & Economy, Accor. “We are very pleased with the extremely positive response to Handwritten Collection from owners and partners in our first year, and we look forward to exploring many more new opportunities for Handwritten Collection across global markets, with high expectations for a fresh round of hotel signings in 2024.”
Collection brand hotels are proliferating around the world at a rate of 25% a year, with one of the highest growth rates in the industry today. The data supports the ambitious growth plan of Handwritten Collection.
Handwritten Collection - The current portfolio
1) Close to Sheshan National Park, Hotel Shanghai Sheshan Oriental – Handwritten Collection (China) reflects its host's passion for seas and oceans around the globe. Built in the Mediterranean style and boasting a large tropical landscape, the hotel is surrounded by a 4,400 sqm outdoor beach and swimming pool, including a kid's pool to satisfy all age needs to get immersed in the seaside vibe. In the Social Hub, guests will soon find books about the seas and oceans. This collection will be curated for all ages, from art to children's books, and novels to comics. Finally, the host's passion will also be present at the bar with a Signature cocktail - The Seawater Martini, a salty alternative to the traditional dirty martini.2) At The Hotel Faber Park Singapore – Handwritten Collection (Singapore), guests experience the elegance and history of a bygone era. Through its architecture and design, the hotel tells the story of Mount Faber Park, one of the oldest parks in Singapore. In 1845, the park's namesake, Captain Charles Edward Faber of the Madras Engineers, built a winding road to the summit to install a signal station. The hotel's design and layout are inspired by Captain Faber's intrepid path through the rolling foothills. Surrounded by lush green parkland and featuring spectacular vistas of the city and harbor, guests will feel at ease among the sense of history and devotion to nature at this special place.
3) Designed as a chic and arty holiday home, Saint Gervais Hotel & Spa – Handwritten Collection (France) feels like a getaway to Turkey, thanks to the host's passion for Ottoman culture. Guests arrive to the sound of oriental music and a welcome ritual with Turkish eau de cologne. Spa treatments are infused with rosewater and orange blossom extracts, while a library corner in the lobby offers books for a deep dive in Turkish history. Fresh daily breakfasts are prepared with some of the owner's favorite ingredients, such as börek, feta, olives, parsley and tomatoes. Turkish coffee and tea are available throughout the day, with Turkish inspired cocktails in the evening, made with raki liquor and pomegranate syrup.
4) Residing within a historic Italian Renaissance styled building, Hotel Morris Sydney – Handwritten Collection (Australia) is a rare example of the renowned Inter-War Palazzo style by architect, Virgil Dante Cizzio. The hotel has found new life as a boutique hotel with an evocative bar - poised like dusk, between old and new, light and dark, Italian design and Australian influence. Each venue represents a distinct but interlinked story and to move between the bar and hotel is to experience a transition in mood and design. Touchpoints of the host's penchant for Italian culture include a refreshing Italian drink on arrival; a 'Bar Morris bill ritual' of dice for a chance at a complimentary Amaro nightcap; and a deck of 'scopa' playing cards placed in-room.
5) The hosts of Andaman Beach Hotel Phuket - Handwritten Collection (Thailand) strive to create moments of connection for guests through a passion for world travel. Guests are offered welcome drinks and sweets inspired by either Phuket or the different destinations that hotel team members have explored. Guests are also invited to enjoy a reading corner in the lobby at their leisure, where they will find a series of travel books with bookmarks recounting the host's own travel experiences. Each guestroom is uniquely designed, although they all feature a thoughtfully placed local guidebook, curated by the host, with recommendations for special encounters with local artisans throughout Phuket.
6) Splendid Hotel Lac d'Annecy – Handwritten Collection (France) celebrates its host's passion for Art Deco design. The hotel is the work of renowned designer Thierry D'Istria, who introduced a series of Art Deco motifs to the hotel's architecture and interiors, then layered in elements of 1950s modernity. A carefully curated selection of Art Deco pieces, artwork, sculptures and vintage pieces add a touch of whimsy to the guest experience, while the hotel's restaurant is done up in true Art Deco style. At the bar, guests are invited to choose from a list of both creative and classic cocktails, including the host's favorite, the Cosmopolitan.
7) At the coastal Relais San Martino Salento – Handwritten Collection (Italy), the owner's fascination with the sea is a recurring motif throughout the hotel. From the glittering glass spheres in the hotel's décor, to marine-based wellness treatments, seawater guestroom amenities, sea inspired cocktails and a restaurant menu designed around seawater – guests will feel immersed in the beachy, oceanic vibe. Once they are fully inspired to go for a dip, guests are invited to go wild swimming at the nearby beach, or enjoy the enchanting wellness area, featuring an outdoor pool, whirlpool, fitness boutique, and a meditation citrus grove.
8) At Oru Hub Hotel Tallinn – Handwritten Collection Tallinn (Estonia) the hotelier shares a passion for traveling from the moment guests arrive, with the feel of stepping into a photo collage. Estonian design agency Velvet and the interior architecture studio Aeris created an award-winning design for the hotel, with a balance of relaxing and social spaces, including a workshop and a yoga room. Images from the host's favorite travel moments feature throughout the hotel. These photos are also used to create postcards which guests can mail to friends from the hotel mailbox, and are bound as a photobook that includes anecdotes from the host's travels.
9) The Crown Kraków – Handwritten Collection (Poland) is a historic site that has been revived by hoteliers with a passion for Polish art and a vision to marry the artistic and utilitarian ambitions of the Art Deco movement with the comforts of modern hospitality. The hotel is decorated with the works of the hosts' favorite contemporary artists: painter Jacek Hazuka and sculptor Adam Myjak. Postcards and a monograph of their works are available to guests. Social events are often held with Polish artists in the bar – best enjoyed while sipping the hotel's signature Belvedere vodka cocktail, a vibrant concoction inspired by the colorful work of artist Leon Tarasiewicz.

Maldives revealed as the most popular travel destination of 2021
With ever changing restrictions, a pandemic meaning some countries were less safe to travel to than usual and a country dying to get out of their homes and into a new environment, the results are revealing.
Top 10 travel destinations of 2021 - Ranked
Ranking Country Search Volume
1 Maldives 2,960
2 Mexico 2,930
3 Thailand 1,600
4 Turkey 1,300
5 Spain 880
6 USA 730
7 Malta 720
8 Portugal 590
9 Mauritius 480
10 South Africa 390
Exotic international travel destinations reign supreme as the most popular countries people want to visit in 2021. Holidaymakers seem to be looking to travel far from home next year with the Maldives as the country at the top of people's list.
Mexico and Thailand come in 2nd and 3rd, each country as exotic as the last. Looking at Europe Brits want to travel to Turkey, Spain and Malta in the new year following a trend of people wanting to go to sunny spots over more prominent winter destinations.
Recent booking data from Club Med also shows that Italy has recently been a popular choice. Kamarina in Sicily saw a large increase of 214% in September compared to the same time last year while Cefalù, also in Sicily, saw an ever larger increase of 350%.

10 Thailand 33,000
Greece came out as the top destination for people in the UK looking to get away after a long year of uncertainty and restrictions. The country was one of the first to open back up to travellers after the first lockdown, and since then has been a popular spot for Brits.
The Maldives is the 2nd most popular country. People who have saved up over lockdown may now have more disposable income meaning a Maldives holiday that may traditionally be too expensive is now officially on the cards. Turkey came in third place with a mad rush of people looking to travel to the country once restrictions were lifted. Club Med has seen a 155% increase in booking to their Palmiye resort in September compared to the same time last year.
People looking to travel closer to home and spend their holidays in the UK increased massively over the past year with 49,470 people looking for staycations. With more restrictions preventing people from taking an overseas holiday, they instead spent time exploring the great outdoors in their own country.
