TAT Welcomes NEOS Air’s Historic Ostrava-Phuket Flight, Enhancing Connectivity to Thailand’s Premier Destinations

In a significant milestone for travel between Eastern Europe and Thailand, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) celebrated the first flight from Ostrava to Phuket, marking the beginning of NEOS Air’s new direct route. This partnership, a collaboration between TAT’s Prague Office, Čedok – the Czech Republic’s leading tour operator, and NEOS Air, is a game-changer for the Czech and Slovak tourism markets, making it even easier to experience Thailand’s sunny beaches and vibrant culture.

A Warm Welcome to Phuket

The inaugural flight, NO461, arrived at Phuket International Airport on December 13, 2024, with TAT hosting a special welcome ceremony to celebrate the occasion. Local and national representatives from Phuket’s public and private sectors gathered to mark the event, highlighting the growing importance of the region as a top destination for winter travellers.

Ms. Suladda Sarutilavan, Executive Director of TAT’s Europe Region, spoke about the significance of this new service, saying, “This new connectivity underscores Thailand’s appeal as a premier holiday destination. It also reinforces our commitment to sustainable tourism growth in international markets. The collaboration with Čedok is pivotal in driving winter travel to Thailand, with the new Phuket service benefitting nearby destinations like Krabi and Khao Lak in Phang-nga.”

A Direct Connection to Thailand

The new route connects Milan, Italy, with Ostrava in the Czech Republic, before continuing directly to Phuket, providing more accessible travel options for holidaymakers in the region. The service is operated by NEOS Air’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with 327 seats per flight. This seasonal service runs from December 12, 2024, to March 6, 2025, with six flights scheduled.

Čedok, which has long been a key player in promoting travel to Thailand, has reserved 120 seats per flight for its Thailand tour packages, making it easier than ever for Czech travellers to experience the Land of Smiles. With additional charter services from Prague and Brno, Čedok now offers a total of 5,940 seats on 26 flights between the Czech Republic and Thailand.

Expanding Eastern European Reach

NEOS Air’s expanded operations go beyond just the Ostrava-Phuket route. Additional flights include services from Prague to Krabi (January 7 to March 25, 2025), Brno to Phuket (October 31, 2024, to March 28, 2025), and Bratislava to Phuket (November 7, 2024, to March 13, 2025). Collectively, these services contribute to a remarkable 51,971 air seats between Thailand and Eastern Europe for the winter 2024-2025 season, providing enhanced travel connectivity across the region.

Key Market Insights: Czech Tourism on the Rise

The Czech Republic has become one of Thailand’s fastest-recovering markets post-COVID-19, with a 23.51% increase in Czech arrivals from January 1 to December 12, 2024. By the end of the year, Thailand is expected to welcome 60,000 Czech tourists, generating 5 billion Baht in revenue. The number of Czech visitors has surged dramatically, with arrivals growing by 170% year-on-year and nearly reaching pre-pandemic levels.

Czech tourists typically enjoy long stays, spending an average of 17.9 days in Thailand with a trip expenditure of 68,603 Baht. This places Czech travellers second among Central and Eastern European markets in terms of spending, underscoring the importance of this growing market for Thailand’s tourism economy.

TAT anticipates even greater growth in 2025, with 78,000 Czech tourists expected to visit Thailand, further solidifying the Kingdom’s position as a leading winter destination in Southeast Asia.

European Sleeper night train from Prague to Brussels

The European Sleeper Brussels/Amsterdam/Berlin night train will be extended to the Czech capital Prague from 25 March 2024. 

The trains will run from Czechia on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and from Belgium on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. 

Along the way it will stop in Dresden, the nature reserve of Saxon Switzerland and in the Elbe valley. The journey will take approximately fifteen hours.

The Czech Republic boasts one of the densest rail networks in Europe and train travel is one of the easiest options how to explore the country beyond Prague. 

Most of the other Czech city break destinations such as Brno, Olomouc or Karlovy Vary are only up to 2,5 hour train ride away from the capital, providing an excellent alternative to busy Prague.

Žatec and the iconic Žatec hop landscape have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List

Žatec and the iconic Žatec hop landscape is the first ever hop-growing region to be included in the List. 

Žatec, a town in Louny District in the Ústí nad Labem Region of Czechia, lies on the Ohře river. 

It has an over-700-year-long tradition of growing Saaz noble hops used by several breweries.

The new UNESCO site consists of two parts that naturally complement each other and document the unique hop heritage of Žatecko. 

The hop-growing landscape is represented by the hop farms around the town and villages of Stekník and Trnovany, 

In Žatec, there is a unique set of hop-growing buildings, many of which are not found anywhere else in the world. 

The latest UNESCO listing becomes the 17th tangible Czech heritage site to be recognised and including, intangible ones, Czechia now has over 30.

2018 is a very important year for the Czech Republic, as October 28th will mark the centennial anniversary of Czech statehood.

The magical number eight has played a significant role in modern Czech history:

* In 1938, Czechoslovakia lost its border territories that had been part of the country since the Middle Ages.

* In February 1948, the Communist Party seized power and for the next 40 years, a totalitarian regime ruled in Czechoslovakia.

* The Prague Spring of 1968, which was the dawn of socialism with a human face, ended with the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops in August of the same year.

* Democratic movements in late 1989 brought the totalitarian dominance of the Communist Party to an end in Czechoslovakia and in other European countries and provided the chance to again be free. Maybe it should have happened one year earlier to stay true to our number eight tradition

This is just the beginning of 2018 and like one hundred years ago, everything is in place for us to live a happy, and in all respects, a fulfilled life in a democratic and prosperous country. 

Despite all the turbulent times mentioned above, no historic Czech cities, nor its nature, castles or chateaux were destroyed. Twelve incredible sites together with other surviving intangible traditions have been inscribed in UNESCO s World Heritage List.

Vietnamese cuisine wins increasing popularity in Czech

The crowds of visitors around booths selling Vietnamese food at the Embassies Food and Culture Festival in the Czech Republic’s capital city of Prague on May 13 reflected the increasing popularity of the Southeast Asian country’s cuisine in Prague.

According to a recent survey published on a local newspaper, 85 percent of interviewees said they loved Vietnamese restaurants in Prague. About 67 percent of respondents said they frequently eat Vietnamese food, while 19 percent said they take the food very frequently. One percent told the survey that they have Vietnamese dish every day.

When being asked about the taste of Vietnamese food, more than a half of the interviewees answered “very tasty” while 37 percent wanted to try.

According to many Czech diners, Vietnamese food is simple, elegant but rich in flavor and colour as well as in nutrition.

Several streets in downtown Prague are lined with Vietnamese restaurants and the Vietnamese food corner at the Prague Trade Centre in the suburbs is always crowded on the weekend.

The popularity of Vietnamese food in Prague is partly attributable to the efforts of the Vietnamese embassy and Vietnamese community over the past years to introduce the country’s food at various local festivals and events.

Whether gathering buzz right now, overlooked in years past, or perennial favorites with a fresh face, these are our picks for the Best in Europe for 2014.

1. Greece

Think that dream trip to Greece is out of your budget range? Think again. Greece tops our list this year as experiencing the country’s sunburnt islands and ancient culture is far more affordable than many expect. Greece’s ongoing financial crisis has caused visitor numbers to decrease and, as a result, prices have dropped in an effort to woo back travelers. In fact Santorini was added to the European Backpacker Index for 2014 (news.gtp.gr). And if you’re after a tipple with your moussaka, bonus: Wine Enthusiast magazine voted the Aegean Islands one of the best wine travel destinations for 2014 (winemag.com). Also, with tourism still playing catch-up, you’ll experience smaller crowds and emptier beaches. Tip: if you patronize independent businesses and outfitters, your dollars will be funneled back into the local economy.

2. Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana might not roll off the tongue for many travelers but it’s worth learning how to pronounce as you’re bound to hear much more about Slovenia’s capital in the years ahead. Ljubljana is already one of Europe’s greenest and most livable cities, boasting a friendly cafe culture by day, and vibrant nightlife after the sun sets. This year gives Ljubljana even more reasons to preen, as the city celebrates the 2000th anniversary of the Roman colony Emona on the same site as the modern-day city. Quirky Roman-themed events and exhibitions will take place throughout the year, and the showpiece event 'Ave, Emona!' (22-24 Aug) will transport the city’s central Kongresni trg (Congress Square) back in time (slovenia.info). Ready your sword for those gladiator fights (or watch from a safe distance). Plus it makes the perfect base with plentiful, inexpensive buses radiating out of the city to the rest of Slovenia, which is as picture-perfect as Switzerland but much easier on the wallet.

3. Southwest England, UK

Imagine yourself motoring through the romantic English countryside, stopping in charming villages, gawping at castles, and staying in the quaintest guesthouses and B&Bs this side of Downton Abbey. You’re in Southwest England, where dramatic rural landscapes yield to breathtaking coastal scenery and even reputable surf breaks. Southwest England is a popular holiday getaway for in-the-know Brits so go now before the rest of the world catches on. Picture-perfect Cornwall and Devon provide key stopping points along the South West Coast Path, a walking trail which wiggles for over 1100 spectacular, calf-cramping kilometers. This region is producing some of the UK’s most innovative cuisine as well: locally sourced, ethically produced, organic and prepared by fantastic home-grown talent. 4. Italy

Must-have experiences abound in this nation saturated with history, culture, art, architecture, food, and natural beauty. Italy’s show-stopping cities include Rome, Venice, and Florence, yet every region of this revered travel destination is guaranteed to provide an unforgettable vacation. Italy made the list this year as it’s lesser-known, lesser-visited (and perhaps less expensive) areas offer even the most seasoned bel paese (beautiful country) visitors new, authentic and unexpected experiences. Sip prosecco in the Veneto countryside, revel in Umbria’s preternatural beauty, be a beach bum in Puglia, escape the mainland on Sardinia or soak up the cultural complexity of Sicily. Whatever you do, prepare to be dazzled.

5. Viking Denmark

What comes to mind when you think of Denmark? Vikings naturally! Instead of learning about them through the History Channel (history.com) or British Museum (britishmuseum.org), head to Denmark where burial sites, rune stones, settlements and museums bring these ancient people to life. Spy some Viking artifacts in Copenhagen’s National Museum before heading to Roskilde to learn more about Viking voyages and seafaring craft. Viking history continues on the island of Funen, birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, and across the Jutland peninsula: check out the Viking Moot (moesmus.dk), where 800 costumed folks gather and geek out, or settle in Ribe, Denmark’s oldest town (founded around 700 as a Viking marketplace), recently voted ‘Europe’s Best Big-Time Small Destination’ (hotel.info).

6. Seville, Spain

Seville is the vivacious capital of Spain’s fascinating Andalucía region, and a brilliant alternative to pricier and more touristed Madrid and Barcelona. The laid-back pace, authentic flamenco shows and the region’s best tapas bars are merely a few reasons why Seville entices visitors to simply enjoy themselves. And that they do – being out at night among the city’s relaxed, heady crowds is unforgettable, no matter how much sangria you drink. While Seville has the country’s most passionate and portentous Semana Santa (Holy Week), prices soar; consider September or October this year as a prime time to visit.

7. Outer Hebrides, Scotland

The Isle of Skye is one of Scotland’s most touristed destinations but we think the Outer Hebrides, the 119 islands lying further off Scotland’s northwest coast, deserve more love. Curious visitors will discover natural beauty in wildflower-speckled machair (grassy sand dunes) and dazzling sugar-white beaches, majesty in rugged hills and sprawling lochs, and mystery in the islands’ fascinating past. The pace of life is nice and slow, which offers ample time to savor the islands’ increasing foodie/craft beer/booze offerings after a long day of exploration and adventure. Cycling is an idea way to sightsee the prehistoric sites, ancient castles, old island blackhouses (traditional cottages) and arts and crafts studios.

8. Plzeň, Czech Republic

Thirsty for a day of culture washed down with a refreshing pint? Plzeň is serving up both in spades, which may be why it was chosen as the European Capital of Culture for 2015 (alongside Mons, Belgium). Merely a 90-minute trip from Prague, but far less crowded, Plzeň is the birthplace of the beloved pilsner as we know it today. Of course no visit is complete without a tour of the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, and you can work off some of the requisite post-tour beers by exploring the underground tunnels of the city, climbing to the top of Gothic church St Bartholomew’s spire, and strolling in and around Republic Square, one of the nation’s largest public spaces.

9. Stavanger, Norway

Stavanger is a city big in atmosphere with a small-town feel. Home to almost two dozen museums and, according to some, the highest concentration of wooden architecture in Europe, Stavanger’s appeal is really about atmosphere. Its scenic waterfront comes alive at night, especially in summer, and the city is a hotbed for street art: they host an annual festival, allowing artists from around the world to work on public buildings. It also serves as the gateway to Lysefjord, the southernmost of Norway’s signature fjords and home to one of its most recognizable vantage points, dramatic Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock). Norwegian Air has also just started low-cost, but controversial (nytimes.com), flights to Norway from US cities.

10. Toulouse, France

AITF 2013 - WHOLE WORLD – ONE EXHIBITION

The traditional trade events of the tourism industry – the Azerbaijan International Travel and Tourism Fair, AITF 2013, and the 7th Caucasus International Hospitality Fair, Horex Caucasus 2013 – opened on 4 April at Baku Expo Centre exhibition complex. For over 12 years, AITF has been identifying the trends and ways of development in recreation and travel in the region, setting the tone for a successful year in the tourism sector, and serving as one of the drivers of future growth of the sector. Since its foundation AITF has been conducted with the active support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan. AITF’s international prestige is confirmed by the support given from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and the International Tourism Trade Fairs Association (ITTFA). The exhibition is also supported by AzPromo and the National Confederation of Entrepreneurs’ (Employers’) Organizations of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The exhibition has received the recognition of the international exhibition community through the approval of UFI (the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry).

The official opening ceremony was attended by the Minister for Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan, Abulfaz Garayev, and the Executive Director of ITE Group, Mr Edward Strachan.

In his speech, the minister said that the growing number of exhibitors demonstrated the continued development of tourism in Azerbaijan, and the increased attention paid to Azerbaijan by the world’s leading tour operators. “AITF 2013 aptly reflects the development of tourism throughout the whole of Azerbaijan, and it is no coincidence that the exhibition includes stands from 22 regions of the country with their own tourism offers, each demonstrating the potential for hotels, recreation zones holiday hotels and health resorts.” The Minister noted that the prestige of the exhibition is growing daily. At this exhibition, meetings are held, cooperation agreements signed, and new programmes and prices announced.

Mr Edward Strachan , Regional Director of ITE Group plc, on welcoming the participants of the exhibition, said that AITF 2013 would kick-start the tourist season in Azerbaijan, which was a great way to revitalize the many tour companies in the hotel and service industries. The size of the trade event for the hotel and restaurant industry, Horex Caucasus 2013, which is of great interest to many professionals and business people in the hotel industry, has also increased.

The VIP tour of the exhibition stands was joined by the Minister for Resorts and Tourism of Crimea, Alexander Liev, and the Minister for Resorts and Tourism of the Stavropol Region, Valentina Chentsova, as well as extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors, participants, visitors and media representatives.

The second day of AITF 2013 and HOREX Caucasus 2013 was marked by a visit from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Baku Expo Centre. The President viewed the displays from the world’s leading tour operators, international airlines, and manufacturers of equipment for hotels and restaurants, as well as becoming acquainted with the displays from the regions of Azerbaijan. Foreign exhibitors demonstrated to the President the potential of their countries, which are seeking to establish steady business relations with Azerbaijan in the fields of tourism, information and cultural exchange.

251 companies from 35 countries, representing a wide range of tourist services with an emphasis on contemporary trends, were involved in AITF 2013. This year, there were 20 national stands, including those from permanent participants such as Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, the United Arab Emirates, Georgia, Russia, Slovenia, Turkey and Egypt. At the same time, the exhibition clearly demonstrated to its foreign participants the rich tourism potential of Azerbaijan, serving to promote our country as an excellent tourist destination and opening up new horizons for the 2013 tourist season.
The main sections of the exhibition covered airlines, tour operators, hotels, health centres, companies specialized in adventure travel, business travel, sports, eco-tourism, luxury holidays, and implementation of Medical Tourism. An innovation this year was the introduction of a new section entitled “Real Estate Abroad”.

HOREX Caucasus 2013 involved 30 companies displaying their products for the hotel and restaurant businesses and other commercial enterprises. The exhibition has grown by 40% compared to last year and included the following sections: textile design and different interior decoration solutions; hotel cosmetics and perfumery; equipment for professional kitchens from five star restaurants to fast food businesses; restaurant (dining) crockery and glassware; cleaners and modern cleaning equipment; software management for chain restaurants, supermarket equipment and so on.

Bilateral meetings were held between representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and representatives of the line ministries of Stavropol and Crimea, workshops took place, and a twinning-project with the European Union entitled “Capacity building in the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan” was unveiled on the first day of the exhibition. Participants used the exhibition to announce new flight routes and rebate programs, and to give presentations about tourist destinations.

Australian Gymnasts Win Prizes At Monte Carlo

Two seventh generation members of the famous Ashton Circus family earned massive applause and prestigious awards at the first ever New Generation International Circus Festival held in Monte Carlo earlier this month, Feb 2012.

Jordan and Merrick Ashton performed a comedy knockabout act and Merrick a slack-wire presentation.

They won three awards:

A.    1st prize “Prix Jury Junior International” for their knock-about comedy table act.

B.     Bronze Clown also for this act

C.     Prix Erich Rozewicz for Merrick’s slack-wire act.

New Generation International Circus Festival

Other competitors came from Ukraine, Russia, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Czechoslovakia, Netherlands, Switzerland, China and Monaco. So you can appreciate they were the only representatives selected from the southern hemisphere ! Congratulations to these two young Australians!
