Destination Canada and ITAC Secure a $100,000 USD Investment from Expedia Group to Boost Indigenous Tourism in Canada

The Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) and Destination Canada announced they have secured a significant $100,000 USD investment from Expedia Group to help boost Indigenous tourism across Canada.

The investment marks a major milestone in advancing Indigenous tourism in Canada and supporting Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #92: calling upon the corporate sector in Canada to adopt the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a reconciliation framework and to apply its principles, norms and standards to corporate policy and operational activities involving Indigenous peoples and their lands and resources.

“Thanks to Destination Canada and Expedia Group’s ongoing work and commitment to Indigenous Tourism, we are heading towards our shared-vision to make Canada the world leader in Indigenous tourism experiences,” said Keith Henry, President and CEO of the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada. “By investing in Indigenous tourism businesses and communities across Canada, we’re able to move towards reconciliation together.”

Expedia Group’s contribution marks a major boost into ITAC’s newly established Indigenous Tourism Destination Fund (ITDF). Launched September 7th, ITDF offers a unique opportunity for travellers, Indigenous businesses and non-Indigenous companies to actively participate in and support Indigenous tourism development. The fund channels contributions into four critical areas: infrastructure, product development, workforce and marketing initiatives.

Aditi Mohapatra, Vice President, Global Social Impact and Sustainability, Expedia Group, said: “We are proud to be supporting such an important cause. The Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada and Destination Canada’s work in championing and growing Indigenous tourism in Canada is exemplary and Expedia Group’s contribution is intended to help propel this work even further. As part of Expedia Group’s Open World™ social impact and sustainability strategy, we are committed to helping provide economic advancement for communities underrepresented in the travel industry, and this collaboration does just that.”

Destination Canada and Expedia Group’s partnerships align with ITAC’s ambitious vision to:
  • Ensure Canada becomes a world leader in Indigenous tourism
  • Raise $2.6 billion over seven years
  • Accelerate the growth of Indigenous tourism to $6B by 2030
  • Create 800 new Indigenous tourism businesses
  • Generate an additional 21,000 jobs

This collaboration is a direct result of Destination Canada and Expedia Group’s strategic partnership that was created in 2019 with the shared belief that travel can be a powerful force for positive change, as well as Expedia Group’s commitment to creating a more inclusive industry. The alliance laid a strong foundation by bringing together all 13 provinces and territories, as well as national organizations like ITAC, with the goal of promoting Indigenous tourism on a global scale.

“Destination Canada on behalf of Team Canada and together with Expedia Group have a multi-year Joint Business Plan where we work together to help Canada stand out as a destination of choice for travel. We are so pleased to see our partners at Expedia Group’s tangible support for ITAC and the Indigenous Tourism Fund,” said Gloria Loree, Senior Vice-President, Marketing Strategy and Chief Marketing Officer, Destination Canada. “Only with meaningful and clear action, in tandem with our partners, can we truly support Indigenous tourism, and help Canada become a beacon of hope for other communities around the world.”

Community-based tourism makes Bac Kan an idyllic getaway in Vietnam’s northeast

Brocade products of the Dao are introduced at a trade fair
In recent years, Bac Kan province has emerged as a magnet for both local and international travelers, allured by its community-based approach to tourism.

Once a pivotal bastion during the August Revolution 78 years ago, Bac Kan has transitioned into a hub of cultural immersion, where homestays harmoniously blend with authentic ethnic minority villages.

Amidst this vibrant tapestry, the enchanting melodies of traditional “Then Singing” and the music of the Tinh resonate, embracing visitors with a heartfelt welcome.

Then singing and Tinh playing clubs at Ba Be Lake help preserve the traditional music of the Tay ethnic minority

Numerous Then singing and Tinh playing clubs have sprung up around Ba Be Lake, the main hub for tourism development in Bac Kan province. Members of these clubs are mostly local farmers who share their passion for folk singing and playing traditional musical instruments.

In addition to setting up these music clubs, the local government has been working on getting everyone involved in tourism. They’re really keen on giving visitors a chance to fully experience how the locals live by arranging stays in traditional stilt houses, cooking sessions, and even weaving workshops.

Thu Phuong, a tourist from Hanoi, said this is a lovely choice for young people or families aiming for a short getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. Aside from the famous Ba Be Lake, there are also some intriguing cultural aspects waiting to be explored, she added.

In addition to the tourism activities set up by the local government, those who come to Ba Be can really get into nature by joining in a bunch of community activities at the homestays and farmstays.

Dang Van Hung, an owner of some facilities of these kinds, said, "Staying at a farmstay facility allows you to chill out and dive into hands-on programs with the locals such as fishing by the lakes, nabbing mussels, getting your hands dirty in the rice fields, or even gathering corn up on the mountains.”

Currently, a lot of those homestays run by the ethnic minorities in Bac Kan province have gotten with the times and are using apps like Booking, Agoda, and even Facebook to get the word out about themselves.

In the first half of this year, Bac Kan province welcomed over 570,000 visitors, 2.5 times more than during the same time last year. That’s hitting 74% of their yearly goal. The total cash flow from tourism has added up to 17 million USD. The province has its sights set on making tourism and the forest economy the big game changers in its upcoming development plans.

Pham Duy Hung, Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee, said Bac Kan province is really getting into gear with investments and exploring new avenues to make the most of its tourism potential.

"They’re all about creating a welcoming environment for traditional cultural values to thrive. Natural scenery and the rich tapestry of cultural identities are going to leave quite a mark on anyone who visits," he added.

Local cuisine helps allure visitors to Bac Kan
Possessing a series of regional and international landscapes along with the cultural diversity of ethnic minorities, Bac Kan province is conquering new goals in community tourism development.

With its collection of both local and global landscapes: Ba Be National Park — an ASEAN Heritage Park; RAMSA Area — a wetland site designated to be of international importance; and Ba Be Lake — one of the 20 largest natural freshwater lakes in the world in need of protection; and a whole mix of ethnic diversity and cultures, Bac Kan is expected to reach exciting new horizons in the realm of community tourism development.

Nedd Brockmann’s guide to the best runs in Sydney and NSW

Nedd Brockmann at the finish line in Bondi
Credit: Bradley Farley
Late last year Nedd Brockmann, a then 23-year-old electrician, ran 4,000km from Cottesloe Beach in Western Australia to Bondi (about 100km per day) in 46 days – faster than anyone else before. His goal was to raise $1 million for homelessness but he more than doubled that amount, taking in $2.5 million. Now a household name, Nedd has become a running icon.

This month he ran the Sydney Marathon in just over three hours. We asked the Bondi local for his tips on great running tracks, the state’s best parmy and where he likes to holiday in NSW.

What are your top three favourite runs in NSW?

Centennial Parklands (Cenny P as the locals call it) in Sydney has to be number one. The park is close to home, flat as a tack (with hills on the outside if you need), has an awesome running community, great views and is the perfect place to switch off!

Narrabeen Lagoon in Sydney’s Northern Beaches is a close second. It’s a picturesque run and out of the hustle and bustle of the eastern suburbs. It's also very flat, which I love. Give me a straight, long run every day of the week and I’m a happy man.

Third and final would have to be my family farm in Forbes. There’s no one around and a run on the farm brings me back to my roots – reminds me what it’s all about.
What’s your favourite post-run meal in Sydney?

I have to say it’s either breakfast or a sandwich depending on the time of day when I finish. The best breakfast in Sydney would have to be between Pina in Potts Point and A.P Bakery on the rooftop of Paramount House Hotel in Surry Hills. The sandwich battle is between S’wich in Bondi and South Dowling Sandwiches in Darlinghurst.

What about the best schnitzel or parmy in NSW to help you refuel after a marathon?

It’s definitely hard to pick just one. The Nelson Hotel in Bondi Junction does a ripper. I’ve also heard the Settlers Inn Hotel in Port Macquarie does an absolute banging parmy – I’ll have to test it out soon!

What about a great run for people-watching?

Bondi to Coogee Walk, Sydney
The Bondi to Coogee coastal run, for sure! You can even start in Maroubra and head up to Bondi to extend the run to 12km. I inevitably bump into friends when I’m on this track, especially on a weekend in summer, so sometimes it turns into more of a walk!

And for being in nature with more solitude when running?

The Blue Mountains are incredible. The Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park north of Sydney is stunning as well.

Where’s your favourite place in Sydney to take your dog for a run?

Queens Park by far! There are lots of friendly faces (dogs in particular) and acres and acres to run [with] your furry friend. My dog Dougie loves the park, mainly because of all the birds he gets to chase! It offers a nice bit of freedom for him in the middle of the eastern suburbs.

Where’s your favourite place to holiday in NSW?

Forbes NSW - Credit: Forbes Visitor Information Centre
I love heading back out into the country to my hometown of Forbes. There’s nothing quite like the fresh air of the country and the friendliness of the country folk.

What do you love about The Sydney Marathon?

It’s so good to see so many people getting after it! I do think running has been picked up massively over the last few years so it’s epic to be a part of the event. Everyone has their own journey and story and I think running allows people to connect. It’s awesome to see people being a part of something much bigger than themselves!

I’m excited to do the whole thing [the Sydney Marathon]. However, I do, as I said, love Centennial Park so I’m keen to run into there. Also, the finish line, obviously, at the beautiful Sydney Opera House is going to be pretty stunning. Running over the Sydney Harbour Bridge is pretty iconic so it’s going to be an awesome day.

Thai PM chairs special airport welcome for Chinese and Kazakhstani tourists

Events at four of Thailand’s key international airports mark the five-month visa exemption for Chinese and Kazakhstani nationals from 25 September 2023 to 29 February 2024.

Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Srettha Thavisin presided over the welcoming ceremony at Suvarnabhumi Airport, one of four key airports holding momentous celebrations to welcome the first groups of tourist arrivals from the People’s Republic of China and Republic of Kazakhstan under the temporary tourist visa exemption scheme, which is effective from today until 29 February 2024.

Present along with the Prime Minister were H.E. Mr. Han Zhiqiang, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of Thailand, H.E. Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Minister of Tourism and Sports, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), as well as other senior officials and key figures from the public and private sectors.

PM Srettha said “The government has identified tourism as a key driver for revenue generation and job creation to relieve the economy. This reflects the quick-win measures to boost tourism income through the ‘ease of travelling’ policy by revising and facilitating the visa application procedure and exempting the visa fee for tourists from the targetted countries. The visa exemption scheme is initiated for travellers from China and Kazakhstan, as both are considered markets with significant growth potential to revive Thai tourism.”

Chinese and Kazakhstani travellers arriving in Thailand throughout the five-month period will be granted a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay for the purpose of tourism in Thailand.

China is one of Thailand’s important markets in terms of both revenue and tourist numbers. From 1 January to 17 September 2023, Thailand welcomed 2,341,080 Chinese visitors – about 37% of the record year in 2019, making China the second largest market after Malaysia. Meanwhile, the number of Kazakhstani tourists almost doubled to 109,865 from 56,529 in 2019, making Kazakhstan a high growth potential market.

The government is optimistic that the visa exemption scheme will be an important mechanism for driving the Thai economy and reviving Thai tourism. Saving both time and the visa fee, the scheme is expected to stimulate a quicker decision among Chinese families, tour groups, and incentive travellers to choose Thailand as their preferred destination during the upcoming Golden Week through to the New Year and the Chinese New Year.

The government expects the quick-win tourism measures will help propel Thailand towards the 2023 targets of 25-30 million international tourists and about 80% of the revenue achieved in 2019 or at 1.5 trillion Baht. The overall tourism revenue target for 2023 is 2.38 trillion Baht from both domestic and international tourists. From 1 January to 17 September 2023, Thailand recorded 19,000,988 foreign visitors.

TAT has forecasted that the visa exemption scheme will help reach 4.01-4.4 million Chinese tourists and achieve the revenue target of 257.5 billion Baht in 2023. Specifically, during the five-month stimulus visa period, Thailand is expected to welcome 2,888,500 Chinese tourists, who will generate 140.3 billion Baht in revenue, or representing about 62% of the record year in 2019. The number of Kazakhstani tourists is anticipated at 150,000 throughout 2023, and 129,485 in the five months or a 49.7% increase over the same previous period, thus generating an income of 7.93 billion Baht.
TAT in cooperation with the public and private sectors is organising the special airport welcome ceremonies at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, and Phuket International Airports. Arriving passengers on the designated flights at all four airports will be presented with cultural shows unique to each location, floral garlands, and souvenirs to mark the momentous events, thus underlining Thailand’s long-standing position as the preferred destination for travellers from around the world.

Reel vs Real: A Guide to the Filming Locations of Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air follows an ultra-committed pilot flying in the tropics who finds herself falling for the man sent to sink her business. Starring Delta Goodrem, Joshua Sasse, Roy Billing and Steph Tisdell, the story follows Delta Goodrem’s character as she flies to remote island communities, weathers a tropical storm and works to keep her business flying.

The movie’s fictional base is Fullerton, but keen eyes will spot the similarities with real-life popular holiday destination Airlie Beach. The movie was primarily filmed in The Whitsundays, and it’s easy to see why. As the scenes play out, the landscapes steal the show, showing off all the things The Whitsundays and Airlie Beach is famous for: islands, azure blue water, ocean views around every corner and diverse locations.

With myriad Hollywood and local movies – such as Ticket to Paradise and Spiderhead – recently filmed in The Whitsundays, the renowned location is no stranger to movie sets.

Some of the most memorable moments of Love is in the Air, featuring The Whitsundays include:

Reel life: Fullerton Airways
Real Life: Scenic flight from The Whitsunday Airport

There are a few ways to experience The Whitsundays and all it has to offer. One of the best ways is from the air. The Whitsunday Airport, located only eight minutes from Airlie Beach is the home of Ocean Rafting’s Scenic flights and the thrilling experience of skydiving with Skydive Australia.

No stranger to show-stopping events, The Whitsunday Airport is home to The Whitsunday’s only Runway Dinner and has hosted many celebrities on scenic flights or helicopter transfers to their island destination.

Reel life: Delivering supplies to remote islands
Real life: Secluded getaway, supplies included

Scenes of delivering supplies to islands and an emergency landing for plane repairs were filmed at Sinclair Bay and Resort, a private getaway for a select few.

Thankfully, The Whitsundays has a few options in the secluded getaway category. Take your emergency recharge at Elysian Luxury Eco Island Retreat or Palm Bay Resort, both located in secluded bays of Long Island. Both resorts come with onsite supplies in the form of a restaurant and bar each, to ensure you have all the time in the world to relax and recharge.

REEL: A drive through Fullerton township
REAL: Airlie Beach – where holiday vibes are permanent

Fullerton township is located on the water’s edge in Tropical North Queensland… sound familiar? The Whitsundays’ Airlie Beach was base camp for the cast and crew while they were filming in The Whitsundays and doubled as the Fullerton township.

Boasting year-round holiday vibes, Airlie Beach is everything a beachside town should be: laid-back, with great food and cold drinks, activity options galore and pools with ocean views to lay by.

REEL life: Stunning scenic flights
REAL LIFE: Get into the sand on Whitehaven Beach

Fullerton Airways regularly flies to remote islands delivering all sorts of supplies. The Whitsunday Islands provide the perfect scene with breathtaking islands and azure blue water.

Take your holiday out of the clouds and immerse yourself in the stunning scenery with day trips to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. Choose your method of transport with a variety of boats heading out each day and helicopters for a Love is in the Air experience.

Wat Trai Phum and Wat Bot Chanaman
Translated from Thai, Um Phra Dam Nam literally means ‘diving while holding the Buddha’s image’. Legend has it that local villagers found a Buddha image floating in the river and brought it to the temple, but it then mysteriously disappeared before being found back at its original spot on the river. Hence, the Buddha image is brought back to the river each year, so the villagers can dive into the river holding it in the hope of receiving a blessing of ‘abundance and nature’s balance.’

TRAVEL LIKE A VIP

PS is a VIP private terminal at LAX. Instead of 2,200 footsteps from car seat to plane seat, members of The Private Suite can do it in just 70 footsteps. Private TSA screening is done in the building, and The PS team handles ticketing and luggage. Members spend their preflight in totally private suites, each with its own bathroom, food service pantry, a two-person daybed, and a runway view of aircraft landing and taking off. When it’s time to board, PS members are driven in a BMW 7 Series sedan across the tarmac directly to their aircraft. For more info about membership and to book a trial experience, visit the PS website.

From expedited customs entry kiosks and exclusive lounges to complimentary makeovers and express massages, there are plenty of ways for travelers to live it up like a celebrity at LAX. Here are some tips for travelers looking to live large. Travel Like A VIP At LAX

TOP 10 THINGS TO DO NEAR LAX

Right after you land or before you board your flight, it's an L.A. tradition to stop at the In-N-Out Burger near LAX for favorites like a Double-Double Animal Style, chocolate shake and Animal Style french fries. The late, great Anthony Bourdain called it the best restaurant in L.A., and you might see students from nearby Otis College of Art and Design, or hungry guests of the Westin LAX and Hotel June. Diners seated at the outside tables have an unparalleled view of jets taking off and landing on the nearby runways.

Vietjet on 27 September has officially announced a direct route between Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and Tiruchirappalli (India) which will start flying on 2 November 2023, with three return flights per week initially.

The direct route from Tamil Nadu to Vietnam marks an important milestone for the development of Tiruchirappalli Airport and the tourism industry of the two countries. Speaking at the event, Mr. Jay L Lingeswara – Vietjet’s Vice President of Commercial said, "Along with the flight from Kochi to Ho Chi Minh City, this new route showcases Vietjet's capability to connect the southern region of India with Vietnam cities by air, which open up more opportunities for travel and trade exchanges with reasonable costs and good services."

The new route will potentially benefit Indian-born people living in Australia (approximately 710,380 by the end of June 2021) who are looking for a more cost-effective alternative to travel back to India. From 2 November 2023, Vietjet will operate 35 weekly round-trip flights connecting five Indian destinations including New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Tiruchirappali with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam, using a modern fleet of aircraft.

According to Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, the number of Indian travellers to Vietnam in the first 6 months of 2023 increased by over 200% as compared to pre-pandemic 2019’s and has placed India in the top 10 inbound markets of Vietnam.

Additionally, the diversity of colours, scents, and sounds are the characteristics of the “Pearl of the Far East," strengthening Ho Chi Minh City's position as one of the most popular Asian tourist places among independent travellers, couples, and families.

From Ho Chi Minh City, Vietjet can take tourists to explore Vietnam's famous coastal regions such as Da Nang City and Nha Trang City, etc. via the airline's extensive flight network, convenient flight hours, and reasonable ticket prices.
