Easy Winter Hikes in Jasper

Pyramid Lake Loop
Jasper National Park in winter is a wonderland of frosted forests, frozen waterfalls, and serene snow-covered trails. Winter hiking transforms the already stunning landscape into a magical escape, perfect for explorers of all ages and abilities. With the right gear and a spirit of adventure, you can rediscover the Canadian Rockies from a whole new perspective. Here are some of Jasper’s most accessible and enchanting winter hikes.

1. Pyramid Lake and Athabasca Overlook

This family-friendly trail is a delightful mix of breathtaking views and accessible terrain. The route offers stunning aerial perspectives of Patricia and Pyramid Lakes, framed by the rugged peaks of the Rockies. After your hike, warm up with a hot drink or a meal at Aalto at Pyramid Lake Lodge, where the cozy atmosphere complements the scenic surroundings.

  • Access: From downtown Jasper, take Pyramid Lake Road to the parking area at the far end, past Pyramid Lake Lodge.

2. Lake Annette Loop

The tranquil Lake Annette Loop is a winter favorite for its serene setting and easy navigation. This well-marked trail circles the frozen lake, surrounded by alpine views that inspire a sense of calm. Pack a thermos and snacks to enjoy at the picnic tables by the beach area—it’s a perfect spot to soak in the beauty of winter.

  • Access: From Jasper, follow Highway 16 east toward Edmonton. Turn onto Maligne Lake Road, cross the Athabasca River, and make your first right. At one kilometre, take the left turn toward Lake Annette.

3. Jasper Discovery Trail

Jasper Discovery Trail
For a mix of nature and history, the Jasper Discovery Trail is an ideal choice. This loop encircles the Jasper townsite and is divided into three sections—Wapiti Trail, Bighorn Alley, and Red Squirrel Trail. As you follow the bear symbols marking the route, you’ll pass through woodlands, meadows, and along the Athabasca River, with opportunities to explore historical landmarks like Old Fort Point.

  • Access: The trail circles the townsite, so you can start from anywhere. Look for the bear symbols to guide your way.

4. Maligne Canyon

Winter transforms Maligne Canyon, the deepest canyon in Jasper National Park, into an icy spectacle. Frozen waterfalls, icicles, and towering ice pillars create a surreal atmosphere. The trail includes six bridges that offer incredible views of the icy depths. For an immersive experience, join a guided tour with Maligne Canyon Icewalks, which takes you into the heart of this iconic site.

  • Access: From Jasper’s east end, take Highway 16 east for three kilometres. Turn right onto Maligne Lake Road, cross the Athabasca River, and keep left at the fork. Maligne Canyon is on your left.
  • Note: Due to recent wildfires, parts of the Maligne Canyon area are currently closed. Check Parks Canada’s website for updates before planning your visit.

What to Bring for Winter Hiking

  • Microspikes: Slip-on traction aids that provide grip on icy trails, essential for routes like Maligne Canyon.
  • Gaiters: These waterproof covers protect your boots and keep snow and moisture out, ensuring warm, dry feet.
  • Hiking Poles: Helpful for balance and stability on snowy or uneven terrain.
  • Warm Socks: High-quality, insulated socks are key to avoiding cold feet and ensuring a comfortable hike.
  • Layers: Dress in moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer shell.

Start Early, Stay Comfortable

Pyramid Lake Lodge
For an early start to your adventure, consider staying at one of Jasper’s charming lodges. Pyramid Lake Lodge offers chic chalet vibes, while Marmot Lodge delivers cozy mountain-style accommodations. Both provide the perfect base for exploring Jasper’s winter wonderland.

Stay Safe and Informed

Before heading out, ensure your chosen trail isn’t in avalanche terrain. Parks Canada provides regular trail reports, so check for updates to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.

Discovering Jasper in winter is a breathtaking experience, where every trail leads to a new wonder. With its accessible hikes and serene beauty, Jasper is the perfect destination for those seeking tranquility and adventure in equal measure. Bundle up, step outside, and let winter in Jasper captivate you.

An Immersive Design Inspired by Cape Town's Beauty
