Turkey Tops the List as the World’s Most Dangerous Driving Destination

According to the research, Turkey ranks as the most dangerous country for drivers, achieving a danger score of 8.53 out of 10.

The findings show that Turkey records the highest road fatality rate among all countries analysed, with 20.99 fatalities per 100,000 vehicles. Even more alarming is its injury rate of 1,272.64 injuries per 100,000 vehicles, making it a significant outlier in the study.

For travellers planning a self-drive adventure through Turkey's spectacular landscapes, historic cities and coastal routes, the findings serve as an important reminder to exercise caution and thoroughly understand local road conditions and driving regulations before departure.

United States Ranks Second Despite Excellent Infrastructure

The United States secured second place on the danger index with a score of 8.15 out of 10.

While America boasts some of the world's best road infrastructure and achieved one of the highest road quality scores in the study, it also recorded the highest absolute number of road fatalities, with 44,194 deaths and more than two million injuries reported during 2024.

The country's fatality rate of 17.05 per 100,000 vehicles was the second highest among the nations examined.

Experts suggest that the elevated risk is influenced less by infrastructure quality and more by the sheer scale of the country, extensive driving distances, high traffic volumes and widespread vehicle usage across vast road networks.

For travellers undertaking iconic road trips such as Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway or journeys through the American Southwest, careful trip planning and awareness of local driving laws remain essential.

Italy Remains a Popular Yet Higher-Risk European Road Trip Destination

Italy continues to be one of Europe's most sought-after holiday destinations, attracting millions of visitors who rent cars to explore picturesque regions such as Tuscany, Sicily, the Amalfi Coast and the Italian Lakes.

However, the study places Italy third overall with a danger score of 7.51 out of 10.

The country recorded 6.75 fatalities and more than 520 injuries per 100,000 vehicles, positioning it within the mid-to-high risk category among Europe's leading tourism destinations.

Narrow historic streets, heavy summer traffic and differing local driving styles can create additional challenges for international visitors unfamiliar with Italian roads.

France Completes the Top Ten

France ranks tenth in the global danger index with a score of 5.39 out of 10.

Despite appearing in the top ten, France performs considerably better than several higher-risk destinations. The country benefits from excellent road infrastructure, achieving one of the strongest road quality scores in the study.

With 7.18 fatalities and 145.20 injuries per 100,000 vehicles, France remains a relatively safe option for travellers planning famous driving routes through Provence, Normandy, the Loire Valley or the French Alps.

Lavery. On Location : National Gallery of Ireland

Sir John Lavery

7 October 2023 to 14 January 2024 

The National Gallery of Ireland partnered with National Museums Northern Ireland and the National Galleries Scotland in an exhibition of more than 70 paintings by modern Irish master Sir John Lavery (1856-1941). 

Dublin’s National Gallery of Ireland will be the first venue for the exhibition, which will then be staged at Belfast’s Ulster Museum (part of the National Museums Northern Ireland) from 23 February to 9 June 202, and) and the National Galleries Scotland in Edinburgh from 20 July to 27 October 2024. 

The majority of Lavery’s solo exhibitions featured works related to his travels, with the artist painting the people and scenery around him. Lavery always travelled with his painting kit, a small ‘pochade’ box or a larger collapsible easel designed specifically for 25 x 30-inch canvases. 

While not exclusively devoted to the notion of Lavery as artist-traveller, the exhibition focuses on some of the key destinations depicted in Lavery’s art including Scotland and Palm Springs, Spain and Switzerland.

The exhibition also includes on-the-spot studies he made in Switzerland, Spain, Ireland, and Italy, while cities from Glasgow to London, Venice, Cannes and New York are also represented. 

The National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin is one of the country’s most popular visitor attractions housing the nation’s collection of European and Irish art from about 1300 to the present day.

An exhibition of Andy Warhol’s paintings, prints, photographs, films and installations will showcase the artist’s range of artworks produced over four decades. 

Andy Warhol Three Times Out has been five years in the making and includes more than 250 works on loan from museums and private collections in the USA, Canada, Europe and the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. 

Warhol’s work selected for the exhibition include the iconic Campbell's Soup Cans; Flowers; Marilyn Monroe; Elizabeth Taylor; Jackie Kennedy and Chairman Mao. 

There are also his observations on identity and mortality in his multiple self-portraits, skulls, electric chairs and avant-garde films Empire, Sleep, Kiss and Outer and Inner Space. Visitors to the exhibition will also see Warhol's immersive Silver Clouds sculpture. 

Andy Warhol is one of the most important and recognisable artists of the 20th-century, devising new ways of image making, experimenting with multiple images silkscreened on canvas, printing, photography, film, publishing, advertising, performance, video and television.

Overall, though, California leads the way for summer travel by offering amazing diversity throughout the state, from expansive beaches to culturally rich cities, not to mention some of the country’s best food and wine offerings.

Ireland launches bid for Eurovision glory

Broadcaster RTÉ has launched its bid for Eurovision glory, announcing the first two artists competing to represent the Emerald Isle: Rachel Goode and Brendan Murray.

They will join a further 4 entries (revealed over the coming days) in a Eurovision special version of the Late Late Show, where a winner will be chosen by a combination of professional national jury, international jury and a public vote.

The chance to represent Ireland at the Contest in Turin has been extremely popular this year, with hundreds of entries being received by RTÉ following a callout for submissions last September.

The top destinations Aussies are willing to quit their jobs for this summer

After two years of cancelled holidays, screen fatigue, and globetrotting only via Zoom backgrounds, it’s clear Aussies are determined to break free of the 9-5 life and get back to exploring the world with a carpe diem mindset.

New research from Contiki* reveals 70% of young Aussies are rethinking their current career with desire to travel (50%), burn out (40%) and wanting to enjoy new experiences (44%) being the top contributors.

With an urge to clean their desk and clear their mind, the pressure facing burnt out workers has sparked the ‘The Great Resignation’, with many anticipated to change roles, or start new careers entirely as they desire change and variety.

The research reveals over 1 in 10 (13%) of 18-35 year olds confirm they will hand in their notice and resign for travel in 2022. A further 19% admit they would quit if the right destination calls – Goodnight Sydney, Buongiorno Ragazzi Roma.

Switching a business suit for a bathing suit
While hot-desking policies provide a great opportunity to travel to different places, the nation can’t seem to shake the appeal of jumping on a plane, with 61% of Aussies committing to making international travel a priority in 2022.

From paralegals who’d rather be paragliding to plumbers with nothing but blocked holiday plans – adventurous Aussies are excited to get back out exploring, with the most appealing activities being a European getaway (54%), Greek Island hopping (34%) and spending time living on a yacht (30%).

The top incentives drawing Aussies towards travelling as restrictions ease are:

However, millennials are willing to break the news in style with 5% willing to quit their job via a TikTok video if it meant they could set sail for Santorini.

The Celtic Routes

Celtic Routes is a tourism heritage partnership between the six Irish and Welsh counties of Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Wicklow, Wexford and Waterford that is aiming to showcase ‘Celtic culture, spirit and soul’.

The relationship between the two Celtic nations has been based on a shared heritage of landscapes, ancient crosses, chapel ruins and sacred stones.

Irish migrants who settled in Wales in the 5th century left the Ogham stones that still line the Welsh coastline today.

The project is part funded via the European Regional Development Fund through the Ireland Wales Cooperation programme 2014-2020.

The Celtic Beacons
Each of the six partner counties has put forward their five best Celtic Routes ‘experiences’ under the title Celtic Beacons.

Each Beacon highlights a particular moment in Celtic history, whether it was 2,000 years ago, 200 years ago, or in living memory.

These include well known locations, including the ancient market town of Aberystwyth in Ceredigion and the Viking City of Waterford.

Three Celtic Moments
The six counties have also each suggested three Celtic Moments, which showcase the times and places where the connection with the past, the land and the spirit is heightened.

Highlights include whales breaching at Hook Head, seal spotting at Cemaes Head and the Aberaeron Mackerel Fiesta.

The Celtic Discoveries
The Celtic Discoveries feature additional options for visitors, including the Ring of Hook coastal drive and some of the castles including Dinefwr, Kidwelly and the ruins of  Wicklow’s Black Castle.

In total, the Celtic Routes area encompasses 78 visitor experiences that can be enjoyed across the six counties.
