New Zealand Sets Sights on Record $253 Million International Conference Market

Penelope Ryan
Aotearoa New Zealand Raises the Bar for Business Events

New Zealand is positioning itself as one of the world's leading destinations for international conferences and business events, with Tourism New Zealand unveiling ambitious plans to secure conference bids worth a record NZ$253 million in the coming financial year.

The announcement highlights the growing strength of New Zealand's business events sector and reinforces the country's reputation as a world-class destination for conferences, conventions, incentive travel and corporate meetings.

Tourism New Zealand's Global Manager Business Events, Penelope Ryan, says the organisation is building on an exceptionally successful year that saw the country achieve its highest-ever conference bidding value.

"We're delighted to be closing out this financial year hitting our targets of 110 bids worth NZ$185 million in value, which is the highest we've ever reached," Ryan said.

The organisation will maintain its target of securing 110 conference bids in the coming year while significantly increasing the projected value target to NZ$253 million.

Business Events Deliver Major Economic Benefits

NZICC
Business events continue to play a vital role in New Zealand's visitor economy, attracting high-value travellers who typically spend more, stay longer and often visit during shoulder and off-peak tourism seasons.

According to new data released by Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA), multi-day conferences generated an impressive NZ$925 million in economic activity across New Zealand during 2025. These events also contributed more than 735,000 international visitor nights, providing significant benefits to hotels, restaurants, transport operators and tourism businesses nationwide.

The business events sector is increasingly recognised as a key contributor to New Zealand's knowledge economy, creating opportunities for collaboration, innovation and international engagement across a wide range of industries.

Government Funding Boost Strengthens Conference Bidding

New Zealand
The sector has received further encouragement through an additional NZ$1 million in government funding dedicated to business events.

The funding will strengthen Tourism New Zealand's Conference Assistance Programme, helping attract more international conferences, conventions and incentive travel groups to destinations throughout the country.

The enhanced support is expected to increase New Zealand's competitiveness when bidding against other global conference destinations and help secure more high-value events over the coming years.

Global Recognition for New Zealand's Recovery

New Zealand's business events industry is also receiving international recognition for its strong post-pandemic recovery.

The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) recently named New Zealand an "early recovery leader" in its annual global rankings for 2025. The country climbed to 45th place globally, improving from 48th position in 2024.

Significantly, the number of international association meetings hosted in New Zealand during 2025 exceeded pre-pandemic 2019 levels, demonstrating the sector's remarkable resilience and growth.

These results reflect increasing confidence among international event organisers in New Zealand's ability to deliver world-class conferences and large-scale business gatherings.

World-Class Convention Centres Driving Growth

New Zealand
A major factor behind New Zealand's success is its investment in modern conference infrastructure.

The country now boasts three world-class convention centres located in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, creating a strong national network capable of hosting major international events.

These facilities are attracting conferences and conventions from around the world while supporting regional economic development and tourism growth.

Ryan notes that New Zealand's reputation as a safe, welcoming and easily accessible destination continues to resonate strongly with international event planners.

Growing Demand from International Markets

Tourism New Zealand is also witnessing increasing interest from corporate and incentive travel groups across key global markets.

North America, Australia and South-East Asia are emerging as particularly strong sources of demand, with many organisations looking beyond traditional European destinations for fresh and unique business event experiences.

New Zealand's combination of stunning natural landscapes, innovative event facilities, high safety standards and memorable visitor experiences is proving increasingly attractive for companies seeking distinctive conference and incentive travel destinations.

As global business travel continues to recover and evolve, New Zealand is well positioned to capture a growing share of the international meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions market.

A Bright Future for New Zealand Business Events

With record conference bidding targets, significant government support, expanding infrastructure and growing international recognition, New Zealand's business events industry is entering an exciting new phase of growth.

The ambitious NZ$253 million target demonstrates confidence in the country's ability to attract high-value international conferences while delivering lasting economic, social and knowledge-sharing benefits for communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.

As organisations worldwide seek inspiring destinations for meetings and conferences, New Zealand continues to strengthen its position as one of the most compelling business events destinations in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA) Chief Executive, Lisa Hopkins says the 29th annual industry showcase comes at a time when international business event arrivals are rebounding strongly in New Zealand.

Why Auckland Is Ready for MEETINGS 2026: A City of Transformation, Connection and Meaningful Moments

Auckland
As one of the hosted media delegates for MEETINGS 2026 in Auckland, I am about to step into a week that will showcase why Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is positioning itself as one of the world’s most compelling destinations for business events, conferences and incentive travel. With the event about to begin, the city is preparing to welcome international visitors into an environment shaped by transformation, innovation, culture and hospitality.

Auckland is entering a defining moment where connectivity, sustainability and place-based storytelling are reshaping how delegates will experience New Zealand’s largest city.

Auckland Ready for MEETINGS 2026

MEETINGS 2026 arrives at a time when Auckland is actively redefining its identity as a global business events hub. The city has invested heavily in transport systems, accommodation development and waterfront revitalisation to enhance how visitors will move through and experience the urban landscape.

For international delegates, this will mean a seamless experience between airport arrivals, hotels, convention venues and key city attractions. Auckland is being designed to feel more connected and intuitive, allowing more time for meaningful meetings, collaboration and discovery.

From the perspective of a hosted media delegate, Auckland is not only preparing for an event but building long-term capability to support the future of global business events and incentive travel.

A Region in Transformation

Auckland
Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is undergoing one of the most significant periods of urban transformation in its history. Landmark infrastructure projects, transport upgrades and the development of world-class venues are reshaping how people will move through and experience the city.

New hotel developments and an expanding hospitality scene are strengthening Auckland’s ability to host major international events while maintaining its distinctive sense of place. These developments reflect a city focused on long-term growth, resilience and global competitiveness.

This transformation is both physical and experiential, designed to enhance every stage of the visitor journey from arrival through to departure.

Designed for Connection

Few cities are as naturally designed for connection as Auckland. Surrounded by harbours and volcanic landscapes, the city is compact, accessible and inherently social in its structure.

Waterfront precincts, cultural districts and central business areas are closely linked, creating an environment where movement between venues feels effortless. For business event delegates, this will translate into greater opportunities for networking, collaboration and shared experiences.

The city’s layout encourages interaction, whether through informal waterfront meetings, structured conference sessions or cultural experiences embedded within the urban environment.

Experiences Grounded in Place

Māori storytelling
What will distinguish Auckland as a business events destination is its deep connection to people, culture and environment. Experiences across the city increasingly reflect regenerative tourism principles, Māori storytelling and locally sourced food systems.

Delegates will be invited to engage with the land and its stories, gaining insight into Aotearoa New Zealand’s cultural identity and environmental values. These experiences are designed not only to inform but to create lasting emotional connections with place.

Sustainability-led initiatives and community-focused tourism programmes will further strengthen Auckland’s reputation as a destination committed to responsible and meaningful travel.

Full of Moments

Auckland is a city defined by moments. From harbour sunrises to rooftop gatherings and urban explorations, each part of the day reveals a different perspective of the region.

Delegates will move between natural and urban environments within minutes, experiencing contrasts that range from vibrant waterfronts to native green spaces and contemporary cityscapes. This rhythm creates a dynamic and memorable visitor experience.

As a hosted media delegate, it is already clear that Auckland’s strength lies not in a single attraction but in the accumulation of meaningful experiences that together form a powerful sense of place.

A Global Destination for Business Events

MEETINGS
Auckland’s readiness for MEETINGS 2026 reflects a broader ambition to position itself among the world’s leading business events destinations. Continued investment in infrastructure, cultural experiences and sustainable tourism practices is building a strong foundation for international engagement.

For event organisers and delegates, Auckland will offer a compelling combination of accessibility, authenticity and innovation. It is a destination where business outcomes and meaningful travel experiences are designed to work hand in hand.

Welcome to Auckland: Discovering the Heartbeat of Tāmaki Makaurau at MEETINGS 2026

Auckland
MEETINGS 2026 offers an inspiring introduction to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, a destination where culture, innovation, sustainability and hospitality come together to create one of the most dynamic cities in the Southern Hemisphere. As a hosted media delegate, I am fortunate to explor a region undergoing remarkable transformation while remaining deeply connected to its history, people and natural environment.

Known to Māori as Tāmaki Makaurau, meaning "the place desired by many", Auckland has attracted people for centuries. Blessed with fertile landscapes, abundant natural resources and magnificent harbours, the region has long been recognised as a place of opportunity and connection. Today, Auckland continues to evolve as a globally connected city while proudly maintaining its unique local identity.

A City Defined by Connection

One of the most striking aspects of Auckland is the way it seamlessly connects land and sea, culture and commerce, tradition and innovation. From the sparkling waters of the Waitematā Harbour to the city's growing skyline, every part of Auckland reflects a region that embraces progress while celebrating its heritage.

As host city for MEETINGS 2026 for the second consecutive year, Auckland is showcasing its growing importance as a leading destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions. Significant investments in infrastructure, transport, accommodation and visitor experiences are helping shape a city ready to welcome the world.

Experiencing the Rhythm of Auckland

Kelmarna Community Farm
Throughout the hosted programme, delegates are being introduced to the many experiences that define Auckland's character. Waterfront hospitality, regenerative tourism initiatives, innovative food systems, transformative transport projects and elevated city viewpoints each revealed a different side of the region.

Together, these experiences demonstrate how Auckland is creating meaningful connections between visitors and place. Sustainability, cultural authenticity and community engagement were recurring themes, highlighting the city's commitment to responsible growth and world-class visitor experiences.

The Spirit of Tāmaki Taumata Rau

The programme also reflected the spirit of Tāmaki Taumata Rau, often described as the place of many peaks. The name symbolises aspiration, achievement and collective ambition, qualities that are evident throughout modern Auckland.

Whether viewed through its ambitious infrastructure projects, thriving business events sector or commitment to environmental stewardship, Auckland is a city looking confidently towards the future. At the same time, it remains grounded in the values and traditions that have shaped the region for generations.

A Destination Entering a New Era

Auckland
Auckland is currently experiencing one of the most exciting periods in its history. New transport networks, world-class convention facilities, premium hotels and innovative visitor experiences are transforming how people explore and experience the city.

For delegates attending MEETINGS 2026, these developments offer a glimpse into a destination that continues to raise its international profile while delivering authentic and memorable experiences. The city is not only investing in infrastructure but also in creating a stronger sense of place and connection for visitors.

A Region Full of Moments

MEETINGS 2026 reveals why Auckland continues to attract visitors from around the globe. It is a city where stunning natural beauty meets urban sophistication, where cultural heritage enriches contemporary experiences and where innovation drives future growth.

From the waterfront to the city skyline, from community initiatives to major infrastructure projects, Auckland is a destination full of moments waiting to be discovered. Landmark MEETINGS set for NZICC next week

New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC)
New Zealand's largest business events showcase MEETINGS opens in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland next week, where more than 600 buyers will meet over 250 exhibitors from 18 regions.

From 16-18 June at the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC), MEETINGS will connect influential buyers from New Zealand and international markets with regional destinations, venues, accommodation providers, and off-site experiences.

Run by Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA), over 1,500 attendees are expected and 6,000 pre-scheduled appointments are planned. International buyers are travelling from Australia, Southeast Asia, China, India, Japan and North America to meet with New Zealand's exhibitors.

Lisa Hopkins, BEIA Chief Executive says MEETINGS 2026 will be a landmark event for the industry at New Zealand's newest and largest convention centre.

“This year the opening, trade show and celebration events are all being held under the one roof at the NZICC, within walking distance of most host hotels, creating a totally connected experience,” she says.

“Over 105 business event organisers and media are crossing the Tasman to meet in Auckland with the support of Air New Zealand, Tourism New Zealand and Auckland host hotel partners. At least half of our buyers are new to MEETINGS this year, and are yet to experience Auckland and the NZICC,” she says.

Auckland Convention Bureau is hosting two separate tours of the city for buyers and media on Tuesday 16 June before the official opening that evening.

Being host venue for MEETINGS 2026 marks a significant milestone for the NZICC.

“Hosting MEETINGS 2026, New Zealand's premier business events showcase, is one of the most meaningful milestones in NZICC's opening year,” says Prue Daly, General Manager of NZICC.

“After years in the making, welcoming our own industry, clients and friends to share our venue, purpose-built for connection, creativity and collaboration feels especially significant - and powerfully reinforces why NZICC was created in the first place.”

Pōhutu Geyser

Before the official opening, Auckland Convention Bureau will also host dedicated city tours for buyers and media, highlighting the city’s growing appeal as a destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions.

A Showcase for the Future of Business Events

The All Blacks Experience is Coming to AIME 2026

In collaboration with Tourism New Zealand, the All Blacks Experience will appear at AIME 2026 as an immersive activation designed to inspire, engage and connect. Feel the Power of the Haka and the Emotion Behind the Moment

All Blacks
For many people, the haka is the most recognisable expression of the All Blacks brand. It’s powerful, it’s intense, and it commands attention. But what makes it truly unforgettable is not simply what you see, it’s what you feel.

At AIME 2026, attendees will be able to experience that emotional force first-hand through the All Blacks Experience activation. It’s a reminder that the most impactful moments in events are not created by scale alone, but by authenticity, purpose and cultural depth.

This is New Zealand storytelling at its strongest, delivered through movement, meaning and presence.

Ian Jones and the Real All Blacks Story: It’s Not Just About the Wins

You might think you know the All Blacks story. The trophies, the records, the global reputation.

But Ian Jones reminds us it’s not just about the wins. It’s about the way an environment is designed to shape behaviour, connection and performance.

That is the deeper lesson the All Blacks Experience brings to AIME 2026. Behind every great team is a culture built deliberately. Behind every unforgettable moment is a framework that makes excellence repeatable. The All Blacks are not simply successful because they are talented, they are successful because their environment is engineered to bring out the best in people.

For business events professionals, that is where the real inspiration begins.

World-Class Experience Design in Action

This is world-class experience design in action. From the changing rooms to the haka, every detail is intentional and built to create meaning and memory, not just moments.

For anyone working in events, sport, or brand experience, the All Blacks Experience offers a powerful reminder that what audiences remember most is how you make them feel. The smallest decisions in design, language, ritual, lighting, sound, pacing and storytelling can influence the biggest outcomes.

It’s a blueprint for creating:
  • Stronger delegate engagement
  • More emotional event storytelling
  • Higher-impact brand activations
  • Deeper cultural connection
  • More memorable incentive travel experiences

In a trade show environment where attention is constantly being pulled in every direction, the ability to create genuine focus and emotional resonance is a competitive advantage.

Why the All Blacks Experience Matters for AIME Attendees

AIME 2026 is the meeting place for the business events industry across Asia Pacific, and it continues to evolve into something more than a traditional trade show. IAPCO EDGE Auckland to unlock the next level of professional education for Conference Organisers

Auckland
The International Association of Professional Congress Organisers (IAPCO) will bring its flagship EDGE education programme to Auckland from 16-19 March 2026, inviting Professional Conference Organisers (PCOs) and business events professionals from around the world to take part in an immersive, masterclass-style training programme at the highly anticipated New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC).

IAPCO EDGE Auckland will deliver a high-impact educational experience designed to elevate professional standards, sharpen strategic thinking, and equip PCOs and event organisers with the skills required to thrive in an increasingly complex global meetings environment.

The first IAPCO EDGE Seminar was held in Auckland 10 years ago. IAPCO will celebrate this significant milestone of its acclaimed education programme with a year-long celebration.

Purpose-built for IAPCO members, conference organisers who work in-house, or for associations, and business events professionals that work alongside PCOs, EDGE is not a traditional workshop. Instead, it is an intensive, highly interactive programme focused on real-world challenges, peer-to-peer exchange, and future-focused thinking – delivered by industry leaders and experts.

New Zealand International Convention Centre
With places strictly limited, demand is expected to be high for what is widely regarded as one of the meeting industry’s most valuable professional development opportunities.

Stephen Noble, Chair of the IAPCO Training Academy, said EDGE represents the pinnacle of professional education for conference organisers.

“Over 10 very successful years, this masterclass-style EDGE seminar has become the very best education available those who work in and around conferences.

“EDGE gives PCOs and business events professionals the opportunity to take their education to the next level – challenging thinking, sharing knowledge and strengthening the capabilities that underpin quality, confidence and excellence in conference delivery.

“We are very proud to bring EDGE back in Auckland, where it all started a decade ago.”

Hosting EDGE in Auckland also marks a significant moment for New Zealand’s business events sector, whereby they will be showcasing the New Zealand International Convention Centre – opening in February 2026 – as a world-class venue for global professional education and collaboration. EDGE will be one of the first major education programmes hosted at the venue.

IAPCO EDGE Auckland is proudly supported by The Conference Company, Tourism New Zealand Business Events, New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC), Auckland Convention Bureau, Auckland Conventions Venues & Events, and Urban Gourmet, reflecting a strong partnership between IAPCO and New Zealand’s business events community.

With limited places available, interested delegates are encouraged to secure their participation early to avoid missing out on this exclusive development opportunity.

Registrations are now open.

New Zealand Ticks the ‘Total Package’ for Events

New Zealand
100% Overseas Appeal, 0% Difficulty Rating

When it comes to hosting unforgettable conferences and incentives, New Zealand has set a new benchmark with its 100% Pure New Zealand campaign. The message is clear: across the Tasman lies a destination that combines international appeal with effortless accessibility.

“New Zealand offers the ease and exceptional facilities of an interstate event with the added attraction of an international destination,” says Tourism New Zealand Global Manager Business Events, Penelope Ryan. “Hosting an event here can take a similar travel time as flying to some Australian states, but with the potential to boost attendance and forge trans-Tasman ties.”

Whether you’re planning a program that’s 20% adventure and 80% relaxation, or an even blend of nature and vibrant culture, New Zealand delivers a tailor-made experience for every delegate.

A Country Built for Conferences and Incentives

New Zealand’s infrastructure continues to strengthen, thanks to an impressive wave of new hotel developments and world-class conference facilities. From luxury wellness retreats and adrenaline-fuelled adventures to fine dining and Māori cultural experiences, the country offers a complete package for business events.

“For conferences, we can offer the mix organisers want — innovative content, experiential learning, and outstanding pre- and post-event activities,” says Ryan. “New Zealand is politically stable, multicultural, and renowned for its warm welcome. With growing airline capacity, you can now fly directly from Australia to Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Queenstown, Hamilton, and Dunedin. It’s easy to get here, and even easier to do business.”

Meeting Expectations Across the Country

A new generation of state-of-the-art convention centres is transforming New Zealand into one of the most exciting business events destinations in the Asia-Pacific.

Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre
In the South Island, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre is enjoying its busiest season since opening in 2022. Between August and November 2025, it is expected to welcome over 32,000 visitors across more than 80 events, including six major international conferences such as the UroGynaecological Society of Australasia Annual Scientific Meeting and the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference.

For Australian delegates, the convenience of a short flight means conferences can easily become extended ‘bleisure’ trips — blending business with leisure and exploration. “We’re seeing delegates plan pre- and post-event touring, often with friends and family,” says Te Pae General Manager Ross Steele.

Wellington Welcomes the World

Further north, the Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre has added a powerful boost to the capital’s event capabilities. The vibrant, compact city is perfectly suited for conference attendees who want to explore everything from world-class museums to waterfront dining.

Tākina is hosting its largest-ever number of international conferences this season, including the International Conference on Urban Health 2025 and The International Council for Open and Distance Education’s 30th World Conference. Upcoming highlights also include iPRES 2025 and the Pacific Rim International Conference on Artificial Intelligence.

Auckland’s NZICC Set to Shine in 2026

In Auckland, the highly anticipated New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) will open in February 2026 — marking a major milestone for the nation’s events industry.

The NZICC is set to open in 2026
Two of Australasia’s largest medical associations, the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO), have already confirmed their conferences for the new venue.

“As a trans-Tasman organisation, we are thrilled to hold our 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting at the NZICC,” says Professor Dave Story, President of ANZCA. RANZCO CEO Mark Carmichael adds: “It’s been over a decade since our Congress was last hosted in New Zealand — we’re excited to experience Auckland’s energy and innovation.”

Connecting at AIME 2026

Tourism New Zealand’s Business Events team will showcase the country’s exceptional offerings at AIME 2026, joined by a record 37 New Zealand partners. “This is the perfect opportunity to explore New Zealand’s venues, landscapes, and support for business events,” says Ryan. “Be sure to visit us for kōrero and kai — a chat and a snack — and discover why New Zealand truly ticks every box.”
