Qantas Takes Off on First Flight to Vanuatu

Qantas
The Flying Kangaroo has taken off from Brisbane to Port Vila, the harbourside capital of Vanuatu, for the first time in its history.

The inaugural service, QF159, was at full capacity today with holidaymakers and business travellers making the near 3-hour journey to one of the Pacific's hidden gems.

The new route offers three direct flights per week from the Sunshine State, and from 12 December 2024* Jetstar will also offer up to four weekly flights between Sydney and Port Vila. Across both airlines this will create more than 150,000 new seats each year between Australia and Vanuatu and making it easier than ever for Australians to experience the beaches, rich culture, and unique adventures that Vanuatu has to
offer.

The new flights will promote tourism between Australia and Vanuatu, strengthening economic ties and providing a boost to the local economy and tourism economy of the broader Pacific region, encouraging ongoing Australian visitation to the island capital.

Qantas
Port Vila is one of the Flying Kangaroo's four new international routes from the Queensland capital that it has launched within 12 months. Today's inaugural service follows the launch of Brisbane to Wellington and Honiara in October 2023 and the upcoming launch of Brisbane to Manila in late-October 2024, which will add more than 100,000 seats between Australia and the Philippines each year.

Qantas Group CEO International Cam Wallace says: “We are thrilled to expand our network with the introduction of direct flights between Brisbane and Port Vila. This new route will maintain connectivity between Australia and the South Pacific, opening new opportunities for leisure and business travel to the region.”

“With its lush landscapes and crystal blue waters, Vanuatu is a truly remarkable destination and we are proud to offer our customers more ways to experience its natural beauty."

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan Graaff says: “This new Qantas route to Port Vila reinforces Brisbane Airport's role as Australia's Pacific hub.”

“The service offers Queenslanders an easy escape to paradise on our doorstep. It also provides the growing number of people from Vanuatu now living in Queensland, particularly those working in the agricultural sector, with direct access to home and family.”

Vanuatu Tourism Office CEO Adela Issachar Aru says: “The launch of Qantas' inaugural flight from Brisbane to Port Vila marks a significant milestone for Vanuatu's tourism industry and strengthens our connectivity with Australia.”

“Vanuatu offers an unforgettable escape, where travellers can immerse themselves in stunning landscapes, rich kastom, and adventure. We can't wait to welkam Qantas customers to our shores and share the beautiful experiences our 83 islands have to offer.”

The new service will be operated by a Qantas Boeing 737 aircraft on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. All Qantas fares include checked baggage, complimentary food and beverages, and seat selection. Qantas Frequent Flyers will also earn Qantas Points and Status Credits on eligible flights.

Thailand to Become the Second Macao to Attract International Tourists and Create Tourism Industry Jobs, Bringing Casino Bill in Effect

Thailand’s newly appointed Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced ambitious plans to develop up to seven integrated casino resorts (IRs) across the country as part of her broader strategy to stimulate the economy and further establish Thailand as a global tourist destination. According to local media reports, three of these IRs are proposed for Bangkok, with the remaining four to be located in key tourist provinces.

The development of these large-scale entertainment complexes is a central pillar of Paetongtarn’s economic recovery plans, aimed at boosting both domestic and international tourism, creating jobs, and driving significant foreign investment into Thailand.

Economic Stimulus Through Integrated Casino Resorts

The proposed casino resorts are part of three “mega projects” outlined in the Prime Minister’s policy statement, which will be delivered to Parliament later this week. This policy update, announced on Monday by Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister Suksit Srichomkwan, has already captured the attention of some of the world’s largest integrated resort operators, signaling a potential shift in Thailand’s traditionally cautious stance on casino development.

As part of the government’s economic stimulus plan, the new integrated casino resorts are designed to enhance Thailand’s appeal to tourists by offering a comprehensive entertainment experience, blending casinos with luxury hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, and cultural attractions.

According to Srichomkwan, the casino legislation currently under assessment by the cabinet includes provisions for three IRs in Bangkok, with each requiring a minimum investment of TBH100 billion (US$3 billion). The remaining IRs, proposed for Thailand’s popular tourist provinces, will each involve investments of around TBH50 billion (US$1.5 billion).

Impact on Tourism and Foreign Investment

Thailand, already a global tourism hotspot known for its cultural landmarks, beaches, and vibrant cities, stands to benefit significantly from the development of these integrated casino resorts. By incorporating world-class entertainment venues into the mix, the Thai government aims to attract high-spending international tourists and investors, positioning the country as a hub for luxury tourism in Southeast Asia.

The casino resorts will not only provide entertainment but will also contribute to the broader economy through job creation, infrastructure development, and increased revenue from gaming activities. Furthermore, by integrating other forms of entertainment such as nightclubs, shopping centers, stadiums, and water parks, the resorts will offer a diverse experience for visitors, ensuring long-term sustainability for the tourism sector.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s focus on economic recovery and growth is in response to the post-pandemic challenges that have impacted tourism-dependent economies like Thailand. By strategically locating these resorts in tourist-heavy regions, the government aims to maximize the economic impact and ensure that the benefits are distributed across multiple provinces.

The Pearl Necklace and Land Bridge Projects

In addition to the integrated casino resorts, Paetongtarn’s policy statement outlines two other mega projects aimed at addressing key national concerns: the Pearl Necklace project and the Land Bridge project.

The Pearl Necklace project is designed as a flood protection initiative for Bangkok and surrounding areas, which are increasingly vulnerable to rising sea levels. The project involves constructing nine artificial islands along a 100-kilometer coastal stretch, creating a buffer zone to protect the city from flooding while also providing additional space for infrastructure and development.

Meanwhile, the Land Bridge project seeks to enhance Thailand’s transportation and logistics infrastructure by developing deep seaports on both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea coasts. This project is expected to boost trade and travel by providing a more efficient route for goods and passengers between the two coastlines, reducing reliance on traditional overland transport.

These two infrastructure projects complement the casino resort development by addressing key environmental and logistical challenges, ensuring that Thailand’s economy remains competitive and resilient in the face of future challenges.

Casino Legislation and Licensing Terms

One of the key details of the proposed casino legislation is the licensing structure for integrated resort operators. According to reports, licensees will be granted an initial 30-year license term, which will be reviewable every five years. This long-term commitment is designed to attract significant foreign and domestic investment, giving developers the confidence to invest in large-scale projects.

The draft bill also outlines 10 types of businesses that can operate within Thailand’s integrated entertainment venues. These include:
  • Department stores
  • Hotels
  • Restaurants, nightclubs, pubs, and bars
  • Stadiums
  • Yacht and cruising clubs
  • Gaming areas (limited to 10% of total floor space)
  • Swimming pools and water parks
  • Amusement parks
  • Areas promoting Thai culture and OTOP products
  • Other businesses specified by the Policy Committee

This comprehensive list ensures that the integrated casino resorts will offer a wide range of attractions for tourists, combining traditional entertainment with cultural and recreational activities that showcase Thai heritage.

Global Interest and Market Potential

The prospect of developing integrated casino resorts in Thailand has already piqued the interest of some of the world’s largest casino operators, who see the country’s untapped market potential as a lucrative opportunity. With neighboring countries such as Singapore and Macau already benefiting from IR development, Thailand’s entry into this market could shake up the global casino tourism landscape.

Analysts suggest that Thailand’s central location in Southeast Asia, combined with its well-established tourism infrastructure, makes it an ideal destination for integrated casino resorts. The proposal is also seen as a game-changer for Thailand’s tourism sector, particularly in terms of attracting high-spending visitors from regions such as China, the Middle East, and Europe.

Conclusion: A Bold Vision for Thailand’s Future

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s plan to develop seven integrated casino resorts represents a bold step toward revitalizing Thailand’s economy and solidifying its position as a global tourism leader. With large-scale investments and ambitious mega projects on the horizon, Thailand is poised to attract more international visitors, stimulate economic growth, and create new opportunities for both local businesses and global investors.

While the success of these developments will depend on the implementation of effective policies and strong regulatory oversight, the future of Thailand’s travel and tourism industry looks promising. As the casino legislation progresses through Parliament, all eyes will be on Thailand as it takes steps to transform its economy through entertainment, culture, and sustainable growth.

It aims to bring together all these organisations under a shared vision to develop and manage an outstanding network of trails across the region.

This strategy applies to key trails in the area from Torquay in the east to Port Fairy in the west, bound by the coast to the south and Colac and Camperdown to the north.

Vietnamese, Lao, Thai provinces strengthen tourism connectivity

An overview of tourism promotion meeting (Photo: VNA)
A tourism promotion meeting between Vietnam’s Quang Binh province, Laos’ Khammouane province, and Thailand’s Nakhon Phanom province has been recently held in the central Lao locality.

A tourism promotion meeting between Vietnam’s Quang Binh province, Laos’ Khammouane province, and Thailand’s Nakhon Phanom province has been recently held in the central Lao locality.

At the August 30 event, participants discussed ways to promote tourism cooperation among the three localities.

They agreed that the three provinces, which all have significant potential for tourism development and transportation links, form the shortest transport corridor connecting Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand, thus opening up opportunities for cooperation and boosting the international tourism market among the provinces.

In bilateral and multilateral discussions, the provinces agreed to promote and support localities and businesses in each province in enhancing promotion activities; encouraging and creating the most favourable conditions for enterprises and investors to develop tourism and service facilities and projects.

A representative of Quang Binh introduced the delegates to the province's tourism potential and strengths, and called for investors to implement high-end resort projects that leverage its strengths in cave tourism, the diverse ecosystem of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, as well as coastal resorts, sports and entertainment complexes, adventure tourism, beach tourism, eco-tourism, and cultural and historical tourism products combined with wellness and health care.

On this occasion, the Quang Binh Department of Tourism, Khammouane’s Department of Information, Culture, and Tourism, and Nakhon Phanom’s Department of Tourism and Sports signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in state management of tourism; development of tourism products; promotion and marketing of tourism products; and coordination, support, and enhancement of their tourism industry to step up cooperation and exchanges./

WESTERN SYDNEY AIRPORT LANDS FIRST INTERNATIONAL AIRLINE

  • Singapore Airlines will operate at Western Sydney International Airport when it opens in 2026.

Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) has landed its first international airline, with Singapore Airlines confirming its intention to operate from the airport, connecting Western Sydney passengers to the world.

WSI CEO Simon Hickey said: “This inaugural international airline arrangement is a fantastic milestone for Western Sydney International Airport and reflects the positive response we’ve had from airlines, especially in regard to the unprecedented opportunities our 24-hour capability unlocks,” he said.

“Western Sydney International Airport’s late-night departure capacity, for instance, could allow
Singapore Airlines’ business travellers to finish a full day’s work in Sydney, take an overnight flight and arrive in Singapore before their first morning meeting the very next day.

“Late-night departures could also allow passengers to transit more swiftly from Singapore through their award-winning Changi Airport hub to connect to one of the 125 destinations served by the Singapore Airlines Group.”

Mr Hickey said Western Sydney International Airport was focused on delivering a smooth and simple experience for its customers, underpinned by the latest technology, which was another major drawcard for Singapore Airlines.

“Our combined international and domestic terminal will give Singapore Airlines customers a seamless transfer experience, while our state-of-the-art baggage system and efficient design, including five-minute taxi times on the tarmac, means passengers will be able to get on their flight faster and relax and enjoy the award-winning service on board,” he said.

Based in the state’s cultural heartland of Western Sydney, which is home to more than 150 different ancestries, this new commercial arrangement will also unlock new opportunities for the region’s residents who welcome family or friends overseas or travel to visit them.

“With the airport build now more than 80 per cent progressed – including the recent completion of our terminal roof – and today’s step forward to advance international airline negotiations, our diverse communities can really get a sense of their future airport, and the experience they’ll have flying from here in late 2026,” Mr Hickey said.

Singapore Airlines Regional Vice President South West Pacific, Mr Louis Arul, said, “This agreement reflects our commitment to enhancing network connectivity for travellers to and from Sydney, and providing additional services for Australia, which is a major market for the Singapore Airlines Group.

“This is a unique opportunity to work with a greenfield airport to set a new base line for customer experience throughout an airport ecosystem.

“We are working closely with WSI to ensure that our customers will continue to enjoy the comprehensive, end-to-end, world-class experience that is synonymous with Singapore Airlines,” Mr Arul said.

Today’s agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the parties in 2023, which set the scope to explore the airport’s future functionality, customer experience, sustainability, operational efficiency, and mutual commercial opportunities.

China’s hotel market to reach $157.46 billion by 2032

The China Hotel Market will reach US$ 157.46 billion by 2032, up from US$ 77.27 billion in 2023, with a CAGR of 8.23% between 2024 and 2032, according to the “China Hotel Market Report, Forecast by Type, Business Model, Sales Channel, End User, Age Group, Gender, Star Rating, and Company Analysis 2024-2032“.

Urbanization, economic growth, and an increase in both domestic and foreign travel are the main drivers of China‘s hotel sector boom. Demand is boosted by increased disposable money, better infrastructure, and government support for travel. The industry gains from an expanding middle class, improved digital integration, and a growing demand for upscale and distinctive travel experiences.
China Hotel Industry Outlook

Both local and foreign travel to China have grown significantly in recent years. Millions of visitors from all over the world have been drawn to the nation by its burgeoning attractions, varied landscapes, contemporary infrastructure, and rich cultural legacy. The industry’s expansion has also been aided by the Chinese government’s initiatives to promote tourism through laws, the construction of infrastructure, and marketing campaigns.

The Chinese hotel industry has experienced substantial growth and development in response to the increasing demand from both leisure and business travelers. Significant global hotel chains and local hotel brands have strengthened their footprint in China, which has boosted competition and given tourists more options for places to stay.
Driving Forces of the China Hotel Market

Economic growth boots the industry growth

One of the main forces behind China’s hotel business rise is economic growth. Rising disposable incomes allow more customers to spend on travel and lodging as China’s economy continues to grow, which in turn drives up demand for hotels. Due to their increased financial means, the growing middle class encourages both domestic and international travel, which raises occupancy rates and opens up new business prospects.

The expansion of the economy also encourages the construction of new infrastructure, such as high-speed rail and contemporary airports, which enhance accessibility and convenience of travel. This infrastructural improvement helps hotels expand in existing and developing metropolitan regions, increasing market penetration and promoting regional development.

Additionally, as China’s economy grows, more foreign tourists and business travelers come to the country, which increases demand for hotels. While more foreign tourists need a variety of lodging options, multinational corporations looking to expand their operations in China need business lodgings. Due of the increased competition brought about by this inflow, hotels are compelled to modernize their services and make improvements.

Rising domestic and international tourism

Domestic travel is fueled by China’s rapidly growing middle class and rising disposable incomes. There is an increasing need for a range of lodging options, from luxurious hotels to more affordable options, as more Chinese nationals travel within their own nation. This tendency is supported by the government’s promotion of travel through regional tourist projects and infrastructure upgrades including extended airports and high-speed rail. Major cities and up-and-coming tourist locations alike are encouraged to invest in hotels by this expanding domestic travel sector.

Additionally, China’s efforts to draw tourists from around the world through loosened visa regulations, advertising campaigns, and improvements to the country’s tourism infrastructure are crucial. International conferences and cultural festivals are examples of major events that increase hotel occupancy rates by drawing foreign tourists. In addition, China is becoming more accessible to foreign visitors because to enhanced transportation connections and the growth of tourism hubs. 287 million individuals entered and left China between January and June during 2024, according to figures released by the Chinese government. Of those, just 8.5 million used visa-free entrance, while 29.2 million were foreigners, making up roughly 10% of the total.

The competitive market environment created by both domestic and foreign visitors encourages hotels to innovate and improve their services. Opportunities for expansion are created by this dynamic in a number of markets, including high-end luxury and distinctive boutique experiences. In general, China’s hotel industry continues to grow and diversify due to the positive interactions between local and foreign travelers.

Shanghai Hotel Market

Shanghai’s position as a major international tourism destination and a hub for global finance has led to a robust hotel industry in China. Due to the city’s thriving economy, there is a high demand for upmarket hotels that offer executive services, conference spaces, and first-rate lodging for business travelers. Millions of tourists visit Shanghai every year due to its rich cultural legacy, which includes well-known locations like The Bund and the Yu Garden in addition to more contemporary attractions like Shanghai Disneyland.

A wide range of hotel alternatives, from luxury and boutique hotels to more budget-friendly options, are supported by this diverse group of travelers. Travelers’ access and convenience are improved by the city’s cutting-edge infrastructure, which includes Shanghai Pudong International Airport and a comprehensive metro system.

Additionally, market trends show that there is an increasing emphasis on combining technology with sustainability. Many hotels are embracing digital advances, such as smartphone check-ins and smart room amenities, while stressing environmentally responsible operations. Overall, Shanghai’s hotel market is positioned as a major player in the global hospitality industry thanks to its economic significance, thriving tourism sector, and ongoing infrastructure improvements.

Last May, when announcing this extension of the visa waiver policy, the Thai authorities also revealed their intention to introduce an electronic travel authorization system for visitors eligible for this visa exemption.

Like the United States (ESTA), Canada (AVE), South Korea (K-ETA), which already have a similar system, or Israel and the United Kingdom, which will officially launch their ETA in 2025, Thailand will therefore soon impose an electronic travel authorization (ETA) on travelers entering the country under the visa exemption regime.
Thailand Ministry of Foreign Affairs moves forward on ETA

In charge of developing electronic travel authorization with other government bodies, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently announces that it is working on the ETA system.

In a report released after a recent meeting between Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Rangsiman Rome, Chair of the House Committee on National Security, Border Affairs, National Strategy and National Reform, the Thai MFA states that it is “accelerating the implementation of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system”.

According to Thai diplomacy, the ETA “will be an important tool for screening and tracking the movement of foreigners entering Thailand”.

What we know about ETA for visa-exempt travellers to Thailand

Here is the latest information on the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) that will soon be introduced in Thailand (to be confirmed in the coming months):
  • ETA should be available by December 2024 in a pilote phase;
  • The ETA system should be fully deployed by June 2025;
  • The ETA application will be submitted on the electronic visa (e-Visa) portal: www.thaievisa.go.th;
  • Whether arriving by air, sea or land, all visa-exempt travelers will be required to hold an approved ETA before arriving in Thailand;
  • The ETA should be requested for each entry into Thailand (single entry);
  • The ETA should be free of charge;
  • ETA holders will be able to use the automated gates at immigration checkpoints using the QR code on the ETA;
  • Holders of diplomatic passports, official passports, UN Laissez-Passer and Border Pass users will be exempt from the ETA requirement for travel to Thailand.

93 nationalities exempt from visa requirements for 60 days

Citizens of the following 93 countries and territories do not need a visa, or an ETA for the time being, to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days:

NSW HOTEL OCCUPANCY LEVELS AND ROOM RATES PREDICTED TO RISE

Surging inbound tourism is predicted to boost NSW hotel occupancy levels and room rates in 2024-25, according to a new report by CBRE.

The property services firm predicts Sydney will be the key beneficiary among Australian capital cities as international arrivals recover. This influx of visitors is expected to push occupancy levels even higher during 2024-25.

According to the CBRE Hotels Australia Overview and Outlook report, domestic travel in commercial accommodation surpassed pre-pandemic levels in 2023 in terms of both travel nights and expenditure.

CBRE Australia Head of Hotels Research Ally McDade said last year's spike in outbound travel was beginning to moderate.

“The high cost of overseas flights and accommodation combined with geopolitical tensions globally are expected to benefit the local sector," she said.

In the year ending December 2023, the Sydney hotel sector experienced the highest occupancy of all major markets at 77 per cent (up 20 per cent year on year). Sydney had Australia's highest average daily room rate during the period at $269. Sydney also recorded the highest revenue per available room at $207, up 29 per cent year on year.

CBRE said Sydney would be the key beneficiary among Australian capital cities from recovering international arrivals, which it predicted would help push occupancy levels even higher during 2024-25.

Sydney also has the second largest pipeline in Australia of hotel stock under construction and due to open over the next two years, with the majority of room rates (56 per cent) in the "upper upscale" category.

Cast confirmed for Australian premiere of splash hit musical Titanique

The cast for the exclusive Sydney season in the show's first run outside New York has been announced.

Producers Michael Cassel and Eva Price has confirmed the ‘kooky krazy’ cast who will set sail aboard the award-winning splash hit TITANIQUE when it makes its Australian premiere exclusively in Sydney at The Grand Electric from 12 September 2024.

The irresistibly funny and irreverent send-up of the blockbuster film Titanic, driven by the songs of pop icon Céline Dion, TITANIQUE has become one of New York’s most sought after tickets. Tickets for the Sydney season are on sale now at titaniquemusical.com.au.

Inserting herself directly in the narrative as Céline Dion is music theatre and cabaret legend Marney McQueen who will share her very short, 90-minute story of her journey on the Titanic. Drew Weston will play the dreamer Jack Dawson opposite Georgina Hopson as the sweet ingenue Rose Dewitt Bukater while Australian stage and screen darling Matt Lee plays Victor Garber. Stephen Anderson also joins the company as Rose’s overbearing mother Ruth, along with Keane Sheppard-Fletcher as Rose’s lover Cal and Abigail Dixon making her professional debut as The ‘Unsinkable’ Molly Brown. Fresh from Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Abu Kebe will play The Iceberg.

Joining them on The Ship of Dreams for this unforgettable camp fantasia are Jenni Little, Trent Owers, Artemis Alfonzetti, Matthew Predny and Tyran Stig.

TITANIQUE’s director Tye Blue said: “I am trembling with anticipation to go launch the very first international production of TITANIQUE in Australia. Over the course of the last few months, the fabulous folks at Michael Cassel's office have helped me assemble a dazzling coterie stacked with true Aussie musical theatre glitterati, and I cannot WAIT to share these mind-blowing stars with the world. The comedy chops - top tier. The VOCALS - GIRL!! Let's just say the Grand Electric may want to re-enforce those rafters ASAP. Sydney is simply not ready. But I am!”

When the music of Céline Dion makes sweet Canadian love with the eleven-time Oscar Award-winning blockbuster film Titanic, you get TITANIQUE, off-Broadway’s most award-winning splash hit, which turns one of the greatest love stories of all time into a hysterical musical fantasia. Want to find out what really happened to Jack and Rose on that fateful night? Just leave it to Céline Dion to enchant the audience with her totally wild take, recharting the course of Titanic’s beloved moments and characters with her iconic song catalogue. Sailing on fierce powerhouse voices in show-stopping performances of such hits as My Heart Will Go On, All By Myself, and To Love You More – backed by the unparalleled energy of a full live band – TITANIQUE is a one-of-a-kind theatrical voyage bursting with nostalgia, heart, and campy chaos.

Co-written by Marla Mindelle, Constantine Rousouli and Tye Blue, TITANIQUE celebrated its off-Broadway premiere in June 2022 at Asylum Theater, starring the musical’s co-authors Mindelle (Sister Act, Netflix’s Special) and Rousouli (Cruel Intentions, Hairspray) as Céline Dion and Jack Dawson.

After several sold-out extensions, the musical transferred to the Daryl Roth Theatre on 20 November, 2022 where it continues to play to packed houses. TITANIQUE became such a hit with audiences that new productions will soon play Toronto, Montreal and London.

Sydney will be TITANIQUE’s exclusive Australian berth through support from the NSW Government via its events agency Destination NSW.
