Qantas Takes Off on First Flight to Vanuatu

Qantas
The Flying Kangaroo has taken off from Brisbane to Port Vila, the harbourside capital of Vanuatu, for the first time in its history.

The inaugural service, QF159, was at full capacity today with holidaymakers and business travellers making the near 3-hour journey to one of the Pacific's hidden gems.

The new route offers three direct flights per week from the Sunshine State, and from 12 December 2024* Jetstar will also offer up to four weekly flights between Sydney and Port Vila. Across both airlines this will create more than 150,000 new seats each year between Australia and Vanuatu and making it easier than ever for Australians to experience the beaches, rich culture, and unique adventures that Vanuatu has to
offer.

The new flights will promote tourism between Australia and Vanuatu, strengthening economic ties and providing a boost to the local economy and tourism economy of the broader Pacific region, encouraging ongoing Australian visitation to the island capital.

Qantas
Port Vila is one of the Flying Kangaroo's four new international routes from the Queensland capital that it has launched within 12 months. Today's inaugural service follows the launch of Brisbane to Wellington and Honiara in October 2023 and the upcoming launch of Brisbane to Manila in late-October 2024, which will add more than 100,000 seats between Australia and the Philippines each year.

Qantas Group CEO International Cam Wallace says: “We are thrilled to expand our network with the introduction of direct flights between Brisbane and Port Vila. This new route will maintain connectivity between Australia and the South Pacific, opening new opportunities for leisure and business travel to the region.”

“With its lush landscapes and crystal blue waters, Vanuatu is a truly remarkable destination and we are proud to offer our customers more ways to experience its natural beauty."

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan Graaff says: “This new Qantas route to Port Vila reinforces Brisbane Airport's role as Australia's Pacific hub.”

“The service offers Queenslanders an easy escape to paradise on our doorstep. It also provides the growing number of people from Vanuatu now living in Queensland, particularly those working in the agricultural sector, with direct access to home and family.”

Vanuatu Tourism Office CEO Adela Issachar Aru says: “The launch of Qantas' inaugural flight from Brisbane to Port Vila marks a significant milestone for Vanuatu's tourism industry and strengthens our connectivity with Australia.”

“Vanuatu offers an unforgettable escape, where travellers can immerse themselves in stunning landscapes, rich kastom, and adventure. We can't wait to welkam Qantas customers to our shores and share the beautiful experiences our 83 islands have to offer.”

The new service will be operated by a Qantas Boeing 737 aircraft on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. All Qantas fares include checked baggage, complimentary food and beverages, and seat selection. Qantas Frequent Flyers will also earn Qantas Points and Status Credits on eligible flights.

Thailand to Become the Second Macao to Attract International Tourists and Create Tourism Industry Jobs, Bringing Casino Bill in Effect

Thailand’s newly appointed Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced ambitious plans to develop up to seven integrated casino resorts (IRs) across the country as part of her broader strategy to stimulate the economy and further establish Thailand as a global tourist destination. According to local media reports, three of these IRs are proposed for Bangkok, with the remaining four to be located in key tourist provinces.

The development of these large-scale entertainment complexes is a central pillar of Paetongtarn’s economic recovery plans, aimed at boosting both domestic and international tourism, creating jobs, and driving significant foreign investment into Thailand.

Economic Stimulus Through Integrated Casino Resorts

The proposed casino resorts are part of three “mega projects” outlined in the Prime Minister’s policy statement, which will be delivered to Parliament later this week. This policy update, announced on Monday by Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister Suksit Srichomkwan, has already captured the attention of some of the world’s largest integrated resort operators, signaling a potential shift in Thailand’s traditionally cautious stance on casino development.

As part of the government’s economic stimulus plan, the new integrated casino resorts are designed to enhance Thailand’s appeal to tourists by offering a comprehensive entertainment experience, blending casinos with luxury hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, and cultural attractions.

According to Srichomkwan, the casino legislation currently under assessment by the cabinet includes provisions for three IRs in Bangkok, with each requiring a minimum investment of TBH100 billion (US$3 billion). The remaining IRs, proposed for Thailand’s popular tourist provinces, will each involve investments of around TBH50 billion (US$1.5 billion).

Impact on Tourism and Foreign Investment

Thailand, already a global tourism hotspot known for its cultural landmarks, beaches, and vibrant cities, stands to benefit significantly from the development of these integrated casino resorts. By incorporating world-class entertainment venues into the mix, the Thai government aims to attract high-spending international tourists and investors, positioning the country as a hub for luxury tourism in Southeast Asia.

The casino resorts will not only provide entertainment but will also contribute to the broader economy through job creation, infrastructure development, and increased revenue from gaming activities. Furthermore, by integrating other forms of entertainment such as nightclubs, shopping centers, stadiums, and water parks, the resorts will offer a diverse experience for visitors, ensuring long-term sustainability for the tourism sector.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s focus on economic recovery and growth is in response to the post-pandemic challenges that have impacted tourism-dependent economies like Thailand. By strategically locating these resorts in tourist-heavy regions, the government aims to maximize the economic impact and ensure that the benefits are distributed across multiple provinces.

The Pearl Necklace and Land Bridge Projects

In addition to the integrated casino resorts, Paetongtarn’s policy statement outlines two other mega projects aimed at addressing key national concerns: the Pearl Necklace project and the Land Bridge project.

The Pearl Necklace project is designed as a flood protection initiative for Bangkok and surrounding areas, which are increasingly vulnerable to rising sea levels. The project involves constructing nine artificial islands along a 100-kilometer coastal stretch, creating a buffer zone to protect the city from flooding while also providing additional space for infrastructure and development.

Meanwhile, the Land Bridge project seeks to enhance Thailand’s transportation and logistics infrastructure by developing deep seaports on both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea coasts. This project is expected to boost trade and travel by providing a more efficient route for goods and passengers between the two coastlines, reducing reliance on traditional overland transport.

These two infrastructure projects complement the casino resort development by addressing key environmental and logistical challenges, ensuring that Thailand’s economy remains competitive and resilient in the face of future challenges.

Casino Legislation and Licensing Terms

One of the key details of the proposed casino legislation is the licensing structure for integrated resort operators. According to reports, licensees will be granted an initial 30-year license term, which will be reviewable every five years. This long-term commitment is designed to attract significant foreign and domestic investment, giving developers the confidence to invest in large-scale projects.

The draft bill also outlines 10 types of businesses that can operate within Thailand’s integrated entertainment venues. These include:
  • Department stores
  • Hotels
  • Restaurants, nightclubs, pubs, and bars
  • Stadiums
  • Yacht and cruising clubs
  • Gaming areas (limited to 10% of total floor space)
  • Swimming pools and water parks
  • Amusement parks
  • Areas promoting Thai culture and OTOP products
  • Other businesses specified by the Policy Committee

This comprehensive list ensures that the integrated casino resorts will offer a wide range of attractions for tourists, combining traditional entertainment with cultural and recreational activities that showcase Thai heritage.

Global Interest and Market Potential

The prospect of developing integrated casino resorts in Thailand has already piqued the interest of some of the world’s largest casino operators, who see the country’s untapped market potential as a lucrative opportunity. With neighboring countries such as Singapore and Macau already benefiting from IR development, Thailand’s entry into this market could shake up the global casino tourism landscape.

Analysts suggest that Thailand’s central location in Southeast Asia, combined with its well-established tourism infrastructure, makes it an ideal destination for integrated casino resorts. The proposal is also seen as a game-changer for Thailand’s tourism sector, particularly in terms of attracting high-spending visitors from regions such as China, the Middle East, and Europe.

Conclusion: A Bold Vision for Thailand’s Future

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s plan to develop seven integrated casino resorts represents a bold step toward revitalizing Thailand’s economy and solidifying its position as a global tourism leader. With large-scale investments and ambitious mega projects on the horizon, Thailand is poised to attract more international visitors, stimulate economic growth, and create new opportunities for both local businesses and global investors.

While the success of these developments will depend on the implementation of effective policies and strong regulatory oversight, the future of Thailand’s travel and tourism industry looks promising. As the casino legislation progresses through Parliament, all eyes will be on Thailand as it takes steps to transform its economy through entertainment, culture, and sustainable growth.

The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority goes off-track with trail destinations

The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority has released a shared vision to establish the region as one of Australia’s outstanding trail destinations.

The strategy provides a framework for coordinated planning, management, and promotion of trails in the region. The Great Ocean Road region has long been recognised as an exceptional destination for nature-based tourism, with its trails being a major attraction for visitors and an asset for residents.

The trail system in the Great Ocean Road region traverses the lands of both the Eastern Maar and the Wadawurrung people.

More than 14 public entities are responsible for trail development, infrastructure delivery, asset maintenance, emergency management, destination promotion, and the management of biocultural landscapes across the region.

The draft strategy was developed in collaboration and coordination with organisations across the region, including state departments and authorities, five local governments, Traditional Owners, and various committees of management. It aims to bring together all these organisations under a shared vision to develop and manage an outstanding network of trails across the region.

This strategy applies to key trails in the area from Torquay in the east to Port Fairy in the west, bound by the coast to the south and Colac and Camperdown to the north.

The trails included in the strategy are:
  • Proposed Anglesea Mountain Bike Trail Networking
  • Camperdown to Timboon Rail Trail
  • Forrest Mountain Bike Network
  • Proposed Great Ocean Road Coastal Trail
  • Great Ocean Walk
  • Otway Walks & Waterfalls
  • Old Beechy Rail Trail
  • Port Fairy to Warrnambool Rail Trail
  • Proposed Otway Hinterland Horse Trail
  • Surf Coast Walk
  • Twelve Apostles Trail
  • Warrnambool Foreshore Promenade

The purpose of the strategy is to:
  • Guide future coordination, development, management, and promotion for trails across the Great Ocean Road region.
  • Achieve greater consistency, connectivity, advocacy, and investment activity.
  • Provide recognition of & tangible support for Eastern Maar and Wadawurrung people.
  • Strengthen brand identity and promotion.

“We recognise the need to collaborate with stakeholders to create an outstanding trails destination right here on the Great Ocean Road.

“Working together to improve trails across the region would strengthen our visitor economy, generate income and jobs, and improve our quality of life.

“Let us know which trails you use and the opportunities for the trail network.

“The region’s trails are a major attraction for visitors and an asset for residents, offering opportunities for walking and mountain biking, and providing access to areas of outstanding natural beauty, cultural landmarks, and unique recreational experiences.”

Vietnamese, Lao, Thai provinces strengthen tourism connectivity

An overview of tourism promotion meeting (Photo: VNA)
A tourism promotion meeting between Vietnam’s Quang Binh province, Laos’ Khammouane province, and Thailand’s Nakhon Phanom province has been recently held in the central Lao locality.

A tourism promotion meeting between Vietnam’s Quang Binh province, Laos’ Khammouane province, and Thailand’s Nakhon Phanom province has been recently held in the central Lao locality.

At the August 30 event, participants discussed ways to promote tourism cooperation among the three localities.

They agreed that the three provinces, which all have significant potential for tourism development and transportation links, form the shortest transport corridor connecting Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand, thus opening up opportunities for cooperation and boosting the international tourism market among the provinces.

In bilateral and multilateral discussions, the provinces agreed to promote and support localities and businesses in each province in enhancing promotion activities; encouraging and creating the most favourable conditions for enterprises and investors to develop tourism and service facilities and projects.

A representative of Quang Binh introduced the delegates to the province's tourism potential and strengths, and called for investors to implement high-end resort projects that leverage its strengths in cave tourism, the diverse ecosystem of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, as well as coastal resorts, sports and entertainment complexes, adventure tourism, beach tourism, eco-tourism, and cultural and historical tourism products combined with wellness and health care.

On this occasion, the Quang Binh Department of Tourism, Khammouane’s Department of Information, Culture, and Tourism, and Nakhon Phanom’s Department of Tourism and Sports signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in state management of tourism; development of tourism products; promotion and marketing of tourism products; and coordination, support, and enhancement of their tourism industry to step up cooperation and exchanges./

WESTERN SYDNEY AIRPORT LANDS FIRST INTERNATIONAL AIRLINE

  • Singapore Airlines will operate at Western Sydney International Airport when it opens in 2026.

Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) has landed its first international airline, with Singapore Airlines confirming its intention to operate from the airport, connecting Western Sydney passengers to the world.

WSI CEO Simon Hickey said: “This inaugural international airline arrangement is a fantastic milestone for Western Sydney International Airport and reflects the positive response we’ve had from airlines, especially in regard to the unprecedented opportunities our 24-hour capability unlocks,” he said.

“Western Sydney International Airport’s late-night departure capacity, for instance, could allow
Singapore Airlines’ business travellers to finish a full day’s work in Sydney, take an overnight flight and arrive in Singapore before their first morning meeting the very next day.

“Late-night departures could also allow passengers to transit more swiftly from Singapore through their award-winning Changi Airport hub to connect to one of the 125 destinations served by the Singapore Airlines Group.”

Mr Hickey said Western Sydney International Airport was focused on delivering a smooth and simple experience for its customers, underpinned by the latest technology, which was another major drawcard for Singapore Airlines.

“Our combined international and domestic terminal will give Singapore Airlines customers a seamless transfer experience, while our state-of-the-art baggage system and efficient design, including five-minute taxi times on the tarmac, means passengers will be able to get on their flight faster and relax and enjoy the award-winning service on board,” he said.

Based in the state’s cultural heartland of Western Sydney, which is home to more than 150 different ancestries, this new commercial arrangement will also unlock new opportunities for the region’s residents who welcome family or friends overseas or travel to visit them.

“With the airport build now more than 80 per cent progressed – including the recent completion of our terminal roof – and today’s step forward to advance international airline negotiations, our diverse communities can really get a sense of their future airport, and the experience they’ll have flying from here in late 2026,” Mr Hickey said.

Singapore Airlines Regional Vice President South West Pacific, Mr Louis Arul, said, “This agreement reflects our commitment to enhancing network connectivity for travellers to and from Sydney, and providing additional services for Australia, which is a major market for the Singapore Airlines Group.

“This is a unique opportunity to work with a greenfield airport to set a new base line for customer experience throughout an airport ecosystem.

“We are working closely with WSI to ensure that our customers will continue to enjoy the comprehensive, end-to-end, world-class experience that is synonymous with Singapore Airlines,” Mr Arul said.

Today’s agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the parties in 2023, which set the scope to explore the airport’s future functionality, customer experience, sustainability, operational efficiency, and mutual commercial opportunities.
