Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2024

Mongolia
Lonely Planet has announced its Best in Travel Destinations 2024.

To mark the publishers 50th anniversary, the Best in Travel 2024 has expanded from the top 10 best cities, countries, and regions to include best value and best sustainable destinations.

Over the past 50 years Lonely Planet has printed over 150 million guidebooks covering 221 countries and other titles showcasing the wonders of the world for travellers.

Now in its 19th year Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel is voted for by the publishers global community of staff, local writers, and partners.

It looks to provide expert insight into lesser-known destinations and new takes on popular places.

New cycling trails, train and flight services making destinations more accessible, bids for UNESCO world heritage status and ongoing commitment to sustainability, community and diversity have all contributed towards this year’s list.

Best Countries

1. Mongolia 2. India 3. Morocco 4. Chile 5. Benin 6. Mexico 7. Uzbekistan 8. Pakistan 9. Croatia 10. St Lucia

Mongolia

For seekers of wide-open spaces, adventures and culture, the capital is teeming with people and unique attractions. Squeezed between Russia and China, Mongolia seems hard to reach given recent geopolitical events in its two large neighbours. But Mongolia’s doors are open and a tourism campaign has eased visa restrictions through 2025. www.discovermongolia.mn

India

There are lot of new ways to explore the world’s most colourful country, new flight services are providing easy access to much    loved hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and Kerala and India’s railways are in for a revamp, with stylish new trains rolling out across the network. Or take a 2,000-mile boat trip on the MV Ganges Vilas, the world’s longest river cruise. www.incredibleindia.org

Morocco

There’s nothing quite like wandering the Sahara Desert on camelback, hunting for bargains in a Marrakech souk and exploring the enchanting blue city of Chefchaouen. But this North African country made our list in 2024 thanks to the buzz from its historic performance at the World Cup, its ascension to the echelon of the world surf circuit, and its revived music festival, Mawazine. Research for Best in Travel 2024 took place prior to the 2023 earthquake which severely affected areas south of Marrakesh. We suggest travellers check for the latest updates on individual locations. Now more than ever tourism income can help support the country’s recovery. www.visitmorocco.com/en

Mexico

For travellers seeking adventure, culture, history, food and art, this year in there are new transportation options along with a celestial event. Take the freshly launched train to Caribbean beaches and ancient Maya ruins; view the 2024 solar eclipse from the golden sands of Mazatlán; or try a road trip to bohemian beach towns along Oaxaca’s rugged and beautiful coast. www.visitmexico.com/eng/home-2

Chile

Chile
A country of salt flats, rainforests, volcanoes, glaciers, and fjords. Change permeates the air across the country with expanded parklands, a new president and plans for a new equity-minded constitution. Chefs in Santiago are untapping the potential of endemic ingredients. Vintners are finding more natural ways to make wine. Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is imagining a sustainable future while rewilding efforts in Patagonia are restoring biodiversity. www.chile.travel/en

Benin

This bijou West African country punches above its weight in its charisma, history and cultural power. Once the site of the ancient Kingdom of Dahomey, it is also the spiritual home of voodoo, a fascinating and often misunderstood religion. Beat a path to Benin’s palm-fringed beaches and some of the best national parks this side of the continent. www.lonelyplanet.com/benin

Uzbekistan

From oasis to oasis follow the trading networks of centuries past. High-speed rail and a convenient domestic flight network have replaced the camel caravans once connecting prosperous fortress towns, yet the ancient cultural hubs of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva still evoke the era of the Silk Road. In the Nuratau Mountains, a community based tourism initiative shows visitors the life of shepherding communities. www.lonelyplanet.com/uzbekistan

Pakistan

The country has long lured travellers from all over the world, and its overdue for a resurgence. Following easing of political tensions, adventure tour companies are returning to Pakistan’s buzzing bazaars, Mughal-built mosques, alpine valleys, and snow-dusted Himalayan passes. Every rupee you spend helps the country rebuild after the devastating floods of 2022. www.tourism.gov.pk

Croatia

Sun-kissed coastline, myriad islands, dramatic mountains, and historic walled cities and the Vis archipelago has been recognised as a UNESCO Geopark With its entry into both the border-free Schengen Area and the Eurozone, travel in Croatia is even easier. The opening of the Peljesac Bridge and new highway means it’s now possible to travel directly between Split and Dubrovnik, without passing through Bosnia. The Bridge has also shone a spotlight on the previously overlooked part of the Croatian coastline, the Peljesac Peninsula. www.visit-croatia.co.uk

St Lucia

Known for its white sand and ceruleantinged waters, St Lucia is shifting its focus to make the island’s cultural heritage, distinctive traditions, and creative proclivities more accessible, an ideal experience for Carib-ophiles searching for something beyond the typical all-inclusive stay. www.stlucia.org/en_UK/

Luxury Escapes’ Top Bucket-List Destinations for 2024

Iberian Peninsula
From shrines and shinkansen in Japan to Sri Lanka safaris, these are our top bucket-list tour destinations of 2024, as chosen by our travel insiders.

With an unprecedented diversity of destinations and extraordinary experiences available to satiate your wanderlust in 2024, there’s never been a better time to tick off your must-visit list. We asked Joshua (Josh) Landy – Luxury Escapes’ Head of Tours and travel fanatic – for the lowdown on the world’s top destinations and where to visit in the next 365 days. From witnessing the spectacle of Egypt’s ancient pyramids to dogsledding beneath Scandinavia’s dancing Northern Lights, wherever you’re eager to explore, we have you covered.

Ready for your next adventure? Check out our handpicked tours.

Iberian Peninsula: Spain, Portugal & Morocco

Positioned at one of the great crossroads of history, Spain, Portugal and Morocco each offer a dazzling range of experiences for the intrepid traveller. “It’s never been easier to explore each magical destination than on a grand tour of the Iberian Peninsula,” says Josh. Flamenco and midnight tapas feasts await in Granada, Spain, while Portugal hides eponymous wine tastings galore in Porto and countless cruise opportunities down the lazy Douro River. Finally, Morocco gifts endless architectural beauty, vivid spice souks and unforgettable evenings in Casablanca, Fez and bustling Marrakech.

Ready to discover the best of Spain and Portugal? Check out this tour.

Japan

Japan
“There’s nowhere else like it,” says Josh, “especially in cherry blossom season.” The country is bursting with once-in-a-lifetime experiences; from Osaka’s neon-washed, food-filled streets to Sagano’s sprawling bamboo forests and Miyajima Island’s otherworldly shores, home to countless sacred deer. Whether it’s ancient shrines and manga museums in Kyoto, book-shopping and Michelin-star omakase in Tokyo or Hiroshima’s unbelievably beautiful Peace Memorial Park, Japan is like a Harajuku vending machine – overflowing with possibilities. Travel in spring to see the city parklands ignite in a wave of pink as hanami season descends and thousands carouse throughout the day in a boozy celebration of the fleeting impermanence of beauty.

South Korea

Spectacle-filled days and soju-fuelled nights – South Korea’s astonishing blend of ancient tradition and modern innovation makes it an unrivalled tour destination. Famished foodies will adore Seoul’s culinary soul, backed by a seemingly endless parade of kimchi, tteokbokki and smoke-infused barbecue. “If you’ve done Japan, and you’re looking for more,” says Josh, “South Korea’s got to be on your list.” Don’t miss visiting the Imjingak Resort Unification Park for a unique glimpse into North Korea – from the park’s observation platform you can see the infamous ‘Propaganda Village’ ghost town.

Vietnam

Vietnam
Travel from Vietnam’s soothing south to its storied north and let the country’s rip-roaring spirit inspire you. It’s affordable, too, points out Josh: “There’s no better place to find luxury for less.” Explore floating communities and coconut groves in the Mekong Delta, wander through Hoi An’s lantern-strewn streets – steeped in history and offering some of the best banh mis in the world – and glide through the ethereal emerald waters of Ha Long Bay, surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs and the occasional hardworking wooden junk boat.

Bali: Canggu

Canggu may not come as a surprise (it's been hailed as Bali's hottest spot for a while now by those in-the-know) – but with increased interest from digital nomads and well-heeled travellers comes a slew of must-try restaurants and uber-chic beach clubs. Move over Seminyak: this southwest enclave is the new kid on the block when it comes to the island’s best dining. If the beach club life is calling you, check into COMO Uma Canggu, where laidback brunches and oceanside cocktails rule supreme.

Scandinavia: Norway, Denmark and Sweden

Scandinavia
“Scandinavia’s perfect for explorers,” says Josh. “It’s completely different from the rest of Europe and the perfect place to see the Northern Lights.” Here, the volcano-strewn wilderness beloved by Vikings stands almost completely untouched; forested islands are surrounded by deep seas hiding frolicking whales, mighty glaciers dominate the horizon and each breath of fresh air tastes better than the last. The cities are no slouch either – some of the world’s most acclaimed fine dining can be found in Copenhagen, and Stockholm’s photogenic nature is near legendary. Plus, you can get around in one of the most unique ways on earth: via dogsled underneath the Northern Lights.

North America

“North America’s got it all,” says Josh, and he’s right – there's a tremendous number of must-visit destinations in the USA alone (with flights available from October at not-to-be-missed prices). A song of ice and fire takes on new meaning in the USA: if kicking up a flurry of the white stuff is your thing, the skiing in Utah and Colorado is unmatched, while the sun-kissed Hawaiian Islands dial up the heat with incomparable hikes, surf and culture. If cosmopolitan life is more your vibe, discover the world’s greatest art museums, galleries and restaurants in the city where the lights never go out or dim down – New York City. For a wander on the wild side, find lady luck in the heart of the Mojave Desert with a trip to Las Vegas and dance and dine your way through New Orleans’ monumental Bourbon Street, pulsing with neon lights, music and French aesthetic. Whatever you’re after, North America more than provides.

Ready to dive into North America? Discover Phoenix to Las Vegas, New England in the Fall or the Best Of Hawaii.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka
For many travellers, Sri Lanka’s mysterious jungle monasteries, sprawling tea fields and fascinating history place it firmly at the top of the list. “Loads of new, wellness-focused hotels have been built recently... it’s never been easier to tour Sri Lanka,” says Josh. Savour a truly secluded safari adventure among the sand-rimmed lakes of Wilpattu National Park, home to elephants, leopards and spotted deer, or strike out to Sigirya, called ‘Lion Rock,’ a truly awe-inspiring granite fortress built atop an ancient magma plug, originally home to ascetics and royalty.

Italy: Rome

The set-jetting trend (whereby travellers visit TV and movie locations) is really taking flight – and with a sequel in the works for Ridley Scott's epic Gladiator movie due for release in 2024, we're expecting a refreshed interest in all things Roman. While shooting for the movie is actually largely taking place in Malta and Morocco, where better to walk in the footsteps of real gladiators than the Colosseum? Happily, Qantas is set to reinstate its thrice-weekly direct flights from Perth to Rome in 2024, with CEO Cameron Wallace saying, "Our Perth to Rome route was one of the most popular across our international network last year and bookings show it's shaping to be that way again." Looking for an oasis in the city? You can't go past Six Senses Rome.

Botswana

Botswana
When will a safari to see the Big Five ever not be bucket list? If you want to walk on the wild side without compromising on luxury, look to the next-level safari lodges of Botswana. Properties here are as much as experience in themselves as the safari (case in point, Xigera Safari Lodge, whose 12 jaw-dropping suites feature freestanding tubs overlooking the plains of the Okavango Delta). Indeed, the price point is higher here than the likes of Kenya, but this is by design: fewer tourists mean a better experience both for visitors and the wildlife, which includes the highest population of elephants in the world.

‘Trees for Days’ initiative launches to support community and the environment

G Adventures has announced the launch of its new Trees for Days initiative, bringing the empowerment of local communities and protection of the environment and closer together to enact powerful change through travel and tourism.

Announced in Cusco, Peru on World Tourism Day, during the inaugural GX Summit – the first world community tourism summit – Trees for Days asserts G adventures’ commitment to preserving communities and the environment around the world. Moving forward, for every day a traveller is on a G Adventures trip, one tree will be grown, helping to both mitigate carbon emissions and increase support in 17 local communities around the world. The tree-planting projects are in locations that have been severely impacted by climate change through deforestation, or that are currently under threat. By supporting the development of sustainable tourism enterprises within these communities, the travel industry can help protect the environment, as well as create additional income streams for local people, most often benefiting and empowering marginalised Indigenous populations, women, and youth.

In partnership with G Adventures’ non-profit partner Planeterra, which uses community tourism to change lives, and Reforest, which actively supports tree planting and forest conservation work around the world, it is estimated that more than one and a half million trees will be planted each year. Travellers will be able to log into their G Adventures account and keep tabs on their tree grove in terms of how many trees they’ve grown and where they’ve planted their roots.

The small group adventure tour operator has already planted over one million trees after backdating the planting of trees for every day a traveller has joined a trip since 1 January, 2023. Soon, travellers will be able to contribute beyond the end date of their G Adventures trip by continuing to purchase trees in a region of their choice whenever they travel, via their G Adventures account.

Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures, says the vision for the Trees for Days project is to increase the positive impact customers have when travelling with G Adventures, while at the same time supporting communities impacted by climate change.

“As the pioneers of community tourism, supporting local communities is at the core of our DNA. With the increasing urgency to help our planet, I’m thrilled to be announcing our Trees for Days initiative in partnership with Planeterra and Reforest. Our non-profit partner, Planeterra has been instrumental in sourcing the community based tree planting projects, and Reforest - which we invested in last year - is providing the technology platform.

“Our travellers care about making a difference when they travel - and they do that simply by booking a tour with G Adventures. Together, we will address how community tourism can play an important role in helping the planet heal, while uplifting local communities, through reforestation and positive local impact,” says Poon Tip.

Jamie Sweeting, president of Planeterra, says the Trees for Days initiative is a win-win solution for all parties involved.

“The planting of trees not only contributes to the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but it helps promote healthier landscapes and ecosystems such as wetlands, grasslands, and forests, and provides crucial habitats, food, and shelter for wildlife, thus helping to maintain biodiversity.

“Beyond that, helping local environments grow and flourish means they become more resilient to extreme weather events, which protects - and even helps develop - local communities and their sources of income, especially in rural areas. More trees also means cleaner air, and a reduction in the effects of extreme heat,” says Sweeting.

Daniel Walsh, founder of Reforest, added that the Trees for Days programme is a great example of a corporate reforestation program that is not only looking to do some real good for climate, nature and local communities, but will also give customers a very engaging and personalised way to connect with that impact.

“Travellers increasingly want to feel like they are leaving a positive footprint, so a key benefit of this program is that they can feel that sense of ownership of the trees planted for them,” says Walsh.

The 17 projects being supported by the Trees for Days initiative are as follows:
  • Acción Andina Argentina (Argentina)
  • Acción Andina Bolivia (Bolivia)
  • Acción Andina Peru (Peru)
  • Ambadandegama Reforestation Initiative (Sri Lanka)
  • Ankilahila 1 Reforestation (Madagascar)Mount Kenya Landscape Restoration (Kenya)
  • Indrawati Reforestation (Nepal)
  • Argan and Caper Tree Growing (Morocco)
  • Kilimanjaro Reforestation (Tanzania)
  • La Tigra Agroforestry (Honduras)
  • Mahelmudi Reforestation (Nepal)
  • Maskarat Nursery: El Khair Women’s Coop (Morocco)
  • Nakaseke Community Reforestation (Uganda)

HOW CAN TOURISM EMPOWER WOMEN TO #BREAKTHEBIAS?

The Dhonk Centre
The President of the  Commission on Human Rights, Charles Malik once said "The fastest way to change society is to mobilise the women of the world." But women face many disadvantages, globally: biases that stop them from accessing education and opportunities, while leaving them vulnerable to violence and oppression. That’s why this year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #Breakthebias – imagining a gender- equal world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

In tourism, women are often concentrated in the lowest paid and lowest status jobs. But it doesn’t have to be like this. By opting to support female-led tourism experiences when we travel, the industry can give women opportunities they have genuine ownership over, and amplify their voices. This can empower communities to #breakthebias, and have a lasting impact on societies – particularly in developing countries. In this sense, travel has a genuine ability – and responsibility – to level the playing field.

That’s why Contiki – the social travel operator for 18-35s – seeks out female-led community experiences for its travellers.

Contiki’s Sustainability officer Tasha Hayes said “MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences give our travellers the opportunity to make a positive social or environmental impact on the communities and places we visit.  For many of the destinations we visit women and girls aren’t afforded the same rights or opportunities as our travellers would in their own countries.   Therefore any opportunity to support or promote a female led business or initiative is genuinely important alongside being an excellent learning opportunity for our travellers. We seek to demonstrate the great community benefit from travel and tourism while in turn educating our travellers on pressing global issues like women’s rights. Most importantly it’s about highlighting  the actions being taken to address these issues and what they can do as advocates after finishing their Contiki trip.

Here are some of the female-led MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® experiences it runs across the world.

The Dhonk Centre

Dhonk founder Divya Khandal has created a beautiful opportunity for growth and change in her home of Ranthambhore, India. Dhonk was created to provide alternative job opportunities in Ranthambore and to discourage participation in the region’s tiger poaching crisis. Working to reform this poaching pattern, Divya has created a place where the women at Dhonk can ethically provide for their families by creating handcrafted apparel and home products, while honouring Indian craftsmanship and design.

Thanks to Dhonk’s focus on education for girls and employment for women, Ranthambore is destined to create many more community leaders to follow in Divya Khandal’s footsteps for generations to come.

Real Country – New Zealand

Southland native Laura Douglas started Real Country in 2016, in an effort to share the real New Zealand with her visitors. She focused on taking women hunting before turning Real Country into a legitimate and thriving farm full of animals and rugged experiences.

Real Country offers a workshop for young girls that’s structured like a finishing school. Laura focuses on instilling confidence and independence in young girls, providing them with practical skills that they’ll have in their arsenal for life. This includes teaching them skills in hunting, farming, basic construction, changing tires, and jumpstarting vehicles. Laura now offers interactive tours at Real Country and teaches some of these skills to the public, along with running workshops for young women.

Ock Pop Tok - Laos

Combining great minds and cultures can be one of the best recipes for success and innovation. This is evident in the work done by the women of Ock Pop Tok. Meaning “East Meets West” in Lao, Ock Pop Tok was created by Joanna Smith and Veomanee Douangdala, of English and Laotian origin respectively. These two inspiring women have worked together to create one of the top textile and artisanal organisations in South East Asia. The company was founded in 2000 when the two women bonded over a love of traditional and innovative textiles, and weaving methods. They’ve grown their business from a small shop in Luang Prabang to a successful business, focused on providing a sustainable livelihood for local weavers – a job traditionally reserved for women.

Ock Pop Tok champions competitive wages, professional development, and opportunities for learning. It now employs over 90 people with a senior staff team of women.

Amal Women’s Cooperative - Morocco

Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen founded the Amal Women’s Cooperative in Marrakech in 2012, initially as a small haven for local women to master culinary arts.  She now has two training centers and accepts 60 women per year into her program, a non-profit that’s dedicated to the empowerment of Moroccan women through culinary training and job placement. Nora has put all her focus into improving her community and created Amal as a free-of-charge program, which even covers student living expenses.

Amal’s students are all young Moroccan women of low income, who are determined to better their situation. The training at Amal sets these women up for success in the culinary field, allowing them to be financially independent. Amal offers cooking classes to visitors and provides daily service at their restaurant as well.

Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco - Peru

Founded by Nilda Callanuapa in 1996, the Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco (CTTC) is a traditional weaving centre in Cusco, Peru. It’s been pivotal in its preservation of Peruvian culture, offering employment to local men and women to maintain the importance of this 10,000-year-old practice.

Nilda was determined to maintain her own cultural heritage while also finding employment opportunities for the locals. Now, CTTC is female managed, operated, and founded, and its focus is on keeping indigenous traditions alive by teaching the younger generations how to weave. CTTC also provides a place where local weavers can sell their crafts, creating revenue streams for the community.

The Iraq Al-Amir Women’s Co-operative - Jordan

In Jordan, female unemployment is high, and organizations such as The Iraq Al-Amir Women’s Cooperative aim to provide opportunities to combat employment disparity.

Iraq Al-Amir was founded in 1993 by the Noor Al-Hussein Foundation; a non-profit founded by Queen Noor of Jordan. Its aim is to teach and equip Jordanian women with new skills, business opportunities, and greater financial independence.

Iraq Al-Amir is not only managed and run by local women, but has provided handicraft training for more than 150 women from local villages. These handicrafts are sold in the gift shop and online, to both provide income and help to preserve local heritage. This ripple effect of women helping women has begun to change the lives of many families and single women in Jordan.
