Soaring Back to Brisbane: Kuala Lumpur Reconnects with Queensland

A New Chapter in Air Travel Begins This November

After a hiatus since 2023, air connectivity between Malaysia and Queensland is getting a fresh boost. Beginning 29 November, the direct flight route between Kuala Lumpur and Brisbane will be reinstated, marking a major milestone in the recovery of international travel and tourism between Southeast Asia and Australia.

Five Flights a Week, Thousands of New Travel Opportunities

Operated five times weekly, this route will inject a remarkable 75,400 inbound seats into Queensland over its first year of operation. These increased flight options offer greater flexibility and convenience for both leisure and business travellers, as well as a timely advantage for tourism operators preparing for the summer travel season.

A Boost for Queensland’s Tourism Economy

The reopening of this route is expected to have a significant economic impact, bringing Malaysian travellers directly into Brisbane and encouraging longer stays in the region. From the Great Barrier Reef to the Gold Coast, the renewed connection gives Southeast Asian tourists easier access to some of Australia's most iconic attractions, fostering deeper cultural exchange and economic benefit.

Convenience and Comfort with Direct International Access

This direct route eliminates the need for stopovers, offering a smoother and faster travel experience between the two cities. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) serves as a major hub in Asia, giving Brisbane greater visibility and accessibility within the broader Asia-Pacific network.

Brisbane Airport Welcomes the Return

Brisbane Airport Corporation has welcomed the return of these flights as a strategic move that aligns with Queensland’s ambitions to expand international visitation. Travellers arriving from Malaysia will find a warm welcome, vibrant city life, and a gateway to natural wonders waiting just beyond the terminal.

Flying High with Passion and Pride: Malaysia Airlines Unveils Exciting Developments

Malaysia Airlines

A dynamic new livery, return to Brisbane, and bold strides in regional connectivity

A Striking Collaboration Takes to the Skies

Malaysia Airlines has taken its brand visibility to new heights—quite literally—by unveiling a stunning new co-branded aircraft livery in collaboration with global football giants Manchester United. Painted on the airline’s flagship A330-300, this eye-catching design blends Malaysia’s national identity with the world-famous football club’s unmistakable red, capturing a spirit of global unity, pride, and passion.

The unveiling was a moment of celebration, made even more special by the attendance of Manchester United legends Dimitar Berbatov, Nemanja Vidić, and Luís Nani. Fans can catch these icons up close during special meet-and-greet sessions from 18 to 20 April 2025 at the MAG Arena, adding a vibrant fan experience to the airline’s latest campaign.

Return to Brisbane: A Welcome Comeback

One of the biggest announcements is the airline’s much-anticipated return to Brisbane, beginning 29 November 2025. This reestablished route reconnects Malaysia and Queensland with direct flights, offering all-in promotional fares starting from RM 1,999 in Economy Class and RM 8,999 in Business Class.

Brisbane's return complements increased frequencies to Sydney and Melbourne, reaffirming Malaysia Airlines’ commitment to the Australian market. With the introduction of the A330neo fleet on selected Australia-New Zealand routes, passengers can look forward to an upgraded travel experience that combines efficiency with comfort.

This strategic focus on Australia reflects strong demand in both directions, supported by new tourism partnerships and promotions expected to be highlighted during the MATTA Fair 2025.

Strengthening Regional Ties Across Asia-Pacific

In addition to Australia, Malaysia Airlines is boosting its footprint across Asia-Pacific. More frequent flights are now available to popular cities such as Auckland, Surabaya, Phuket, and Trivandrum, giving travellers more flexibility and seamless connections across the region.

These added services are part of a broader initiative to strengthen the airline’s role as a leading connector in the region, particularly in the ASEAN and South Asian markets.

Narrowbody Comfort Redefined with Lie-Flat Seats

Malaysia Airlines
One of the standout innovations unveiled is the airline’s new lie-flat Business Class seats for its Boeing 737-10 aircraft—the first of their kind for Malaysia Airlines’ narrowbody fleet. These seats are designed to offer long-haul comfort on shorter regional journeys, enhancing consistency across the customer experience.

Passengers travelling from destinations like Trivandrum to Kuala Lumpur, with onward connections to cities such as Melbourne, can now enjoy a premium, seamless cabin journey throughout. This step is part of Malaysia Airlines’ fleet modernisation plan, which aims to operate 55 new-generation Boeing 737-8 and 737-10 aircraft by 2030.

More Choice with Enhanced Fare Options

Malaysia Airlines continues to refine its offerings to better suit modern traveller preferences. Economy Class fare categories now include Economy Value (formerly Economy Lite), Economy Basic, and Economy Flex. Economy Value includes 7kg of cabin baggage, 20kg of checked baggage, in-flight meals, booking flexibility, and even a discount for children—delivering exceptional value alongside traditional Malaysian hospitality.

Loyalty Made Local: EnrichMoney Evolves

Further enhancing the traveller experience is EnrichMoney, Malaysia Airlines’ multi-currency e-wallet and Visa prepaid card. With its new "Pay with EnrichMoney Points" feature, members can now redeem points instantly via DuitNow QR at participating merchants in Malaysia. From 18 April to 31 May 2025, members will enjoy RM5 off for using the feature—bringing loyalty rewards into daily life in a meaningful way.

Looking Ahead: Growth Through Partnerships and Innovation

Backed by strategic collaborations with international organisations such as Google, Atout France, Panorama Group, and Student Universe, Malaysia Airlines is driving digital transformation and expanding global reach. These partnerships signal the airline’s forward-looking approach as it continues its journey toward becoming a Top 10 global and Top 5 Asian carrier.

As it blends sporting prestige with aviation innovation, reopens global routes, and refines the travel experience with modern fleet updates, Malaysia Airlines is not just charting a flight path—it’s crafting a bold future.

Malaysia Aviation Group Soars Ahead: Positive Results and a Vision for the Future

Malaysia Aviation Group
A third consecutive operating profit and big plans in the skies

Resilience Takes Flight

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has wrapped up 2024 with strong financial footing and renewed optimism for the future, reporting a positive Net Profit After Interest and Tax (NIAT) of RM54 million, and a solid operating profit of RM113 million—marking the third consecutive year of profitability.

Even in the face of operational challenges, including proactive capacity reductions and delays in aircraft delivery, MAG posted an EBITDA of RM788 million, a testament to its strategic adaptability. With a load factor of 80%, up three percentage points from the previous year, and passenger numbers rising to 16.6 million, the Group continues to show that its core business is thriving.

A Strategic Shift to Strength and Sustainability

MAG’s ability to stay profitable, even after reducing capacity by 18% in the final quarter of 2024, speaks volumes about the Group’s operational efficiency and market strategy. These cuts, although impacting short-term revenue, were necessary due to extended maintenance periods and supply chain disruptions. Despite this, the Group maintained a cash balance of RM3 billion, without requiring capital injections from its main shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, since 2021.

A notable boost also came from a reversal of impairments amounting to RM426 million—linked to assets initially written down during the COVID-19 crisis—reflecting improved market conditions and operational performance.

Airline Performance: Highs and Headwinds

Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB), MAG’s flagship airline, achieved a RM139 million operating profit. Although this was a significant drop from the previous year due to lower yield and capacity cuts, MAB saw a 17% increase in passenger volume and a load factor improvement to 81%.

MAB also grew its international network with new routes to Male (Maldives), Da Nang (Vietnam), and Chiang Mai (Thailand), while resuming services to Kolkata, India. Despite the headwinds, Malaysia Airlines maintained a strong performance reputation, earning APEX Four-Star Major Airline status, being ranked among the Top 10 for World’s Best Cabin Crew, and climbing to #39 in the Skytrax World’s Best Airline rankings.

Meanwhile, subsidiaries Firefly and Amal by Malaysia Airlines faced mixed outcomes. Firefly’s expansion into jet operations led to short-term losses, while Amal improved its financial performance by 36% year-on-year.

Cargo and Ground Operations on the Rise

MAG’s non-airline segments demonstrated robust growth. MAB Kargo posted higher profits driven by increased capacity and stronger load factors for both freighter and belly cargo. AeroDarat Services, the Group’s ground handling provider, tripled its operating profit, supported by increased flight handling for both MAG and external carriers.

MAB Academy, the Group’s training division, posted year-on-year improvement, while MAB Engineering Services faced talent challenges amidst rising demand for aircraft maintenance.

Looking to 2030: A Vision for the Skies

Group Managing Director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail reaffirmed MAG’s long-term ambition through its Destination 2030 strategy. At its core is a modernised fleet featuring 55 new-generation Boeing 737-8 and 737-10 aircraft, and the ongoing integration of A330neo aircraft, already flying to Melbourne, Bali, and Auckland, with more to come.

MAG’s global reach is also expanding. With forward bookings up 9% year-on-year, the Group is eyeing further growth in ASEAN, Australia, New Zealand, and South Asia, and is set to return to Paris in March 2025—its second European destination.

Investing in Infrastructure and Talent

MAG is also bolstering its support systems. MAB Academy’s new simulator building, due by Q2 2025, will boost regional pilot training capabilities. Meanwhile, Hangar 4 at Subang Airport, set to open in Q1 2026, will enhance maintenance capacity. MAG’s catering division, now operating out of the new MCAT West facility, is also scaling up to support growing demand.

These efforts are more than just operational—they are aligned with Malaysia’s broader economic aspirations. By investing in jobs, connectivity, and global partnerships, MAG is not only flying high but helping to lift the nation with it.
