As another intense European summer brings soaring temperatures and crowded tourist hotspots, travellers are increasingly choosing a different kind of luxury holiday. The growing "coolcation" trend is encouraging holidaymakers to swap packed city streets and heatwaves for refreshing island escapes, crystal-clear waters and unforgettable ocean adventures.

From the remote Seychelles to the tropical islands of Palau, Bali and Costa Rica, these luxury escapes redefine the perfect summer holiday.

Why Coolcations Are Becoming the Hottest Travel Trend

The concept of the coolcation has rapidly gained popularity among travellers looking for alternatives to traditional summer destinations.

Luxury resorts located on secluded islands and coastal regions are becoming increasingly attractive for travellers who value relaxation, sustainability and authentic experiences over crowded attractions.

Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts offers a collection of remarkable properties where guests can reconnect with nature while enjoying exceptional comfort and personalised service.

Luxury Travel Meets Nature and Adventure

 Costa Rica gulf
Today's luxury travellers increasingly seek experiences rather than simply destinations.

Ocean adventures, wildlife encounters, cultural immersion and sustainable tourism now play a central role in many holiday decisions.

The Four Seasons collection of island resorts responds perfectly to this shift by combining exceptional accommodation with carefully curated experiences that showcase each destination's unique natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Whether paddling across the Indian Ocean, snorkelling among coral reefs, flying above tropical islands or sailing into a Pacific sunset, guests create lasting memories while escaping the pressures of crowded tourist centres.

The Perfect Escape from Europe's Summer Crowds

As climate patterns continue to influence travel choices, cooler coastal destinations and island retreats are expected to remain among the fastest-growing sectors of global tourism.

Travellers seeking tranquillity, comfort and authentic experiences are discovering that paradise often lies far beyond the traditional summer hotspots.

Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts continues to lead this evolution by offering extraordinary destinations where luxury seamlessly blends with nature, adventure and personalised service.

For anyone planning an unforgettable holiday away from Europe's summer heat, these remarkable island escapes provide the perfect opportunity to relax, explore and experience the world's most beautiful coastal destinations.

Blue Safari Seychelles : Island Conservation Society

Blue Safari Seychelles, which focusses on conservation in the Outer Islands of Seychelles has joined with local NGO the Island Conservation Society and its conservation partners to open a conservation centre on Astove Island.

This centre will cover conservation priorities on the Astove and Cosmoledo Atolls, part of The Aldabra Group of Islands, which are located 1,000 km from the main island of Mahé.

This group of islands has an exceptionally high biodiversity value and is home to rare, endangered, or endemic species like the Menai White-eye, the last nesting colony of Brown Boobies in the Seychelles and giant tortoises.

With historically low levels of human development and limited fishing pressures, The Aldabra Group has one of the least impacted coral reefs in the region.

The main conservation priorities for the new centre will be invasive species eradication and the reintroduction of native species.

It will also undertake habitat assessments and determine population sizes of endangered species and a complete bird census.

Invasive species like non-native mammals such as rats, cats, and goats have a huge impact on bird, invertebrate, and vegetation diversity and small, isolated islands are the most vulnerable.

The result of these long-term eradication plans will help increase habitat and the successful reintroduction for seabirds.

The centre will also undertake an annual sooty tern census on Cosmoledo Atoll, and check the nesting success of other seabirds, such as Red Footed and Masked Boobies.

The opening of this new centre is one step in encouraging and amplifying land and marine conservation in the Outer Islands of Seychelles. Astove Atoll was first ‘discovered’ between 1000 and 1500 AD but was not inhabited until 1760, when a Portuguese ship ran aground.

After 250 years of inhabitation, the atoll was abandoned, and nature was left to take over and thrive. In 2014, Astove Atoll was declared a nature reserve securing its protection for decades to come.

Discover the beauty of The Seychelles without restrictions at STORY Seychelles

The Indian Ocean island destination has announced that it will be welcoming visitors from across the globe, irrespective of their vaccination status, as from March 25, 2021. Visitors from South Africa will still not be permitted to enter Seychelles for the time being until further review.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Sylvestre Radegonde in a press briefing this morning, Thursday, March 4, 2021, at the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) conference room at Botanical House following the Tourism Task Force Committee meeting.
Visitors will now only be required to present a negative PCR test taken 72 hours prior to departure.
There will be no quarantine requirement nor restriction on movement upon entry into Seychelles.
Additionally, the minimum stay in establishments upon arrival will no longer be applicable.

However, visitors will still be required to adhere to other public health measures put in place in view of the pandemic these will include wearing of face masks, social distancing, regular sanitisation or washing of hands.

The new measures also give visitors access to all communal area within the hotel premises inclusive of bars, swimming pools, spas and Kid’s club.

Minister Radegonde stated that the decision to review and relax the entry procedures in the country has been made possible in view of the success registered in the aggressive vaccination campaign that the country embarked on earlier in the year.

“The vaccination campaign has been quite successful. The government has done everything in its power to make sure that the population is protected. We have now arrived at the point where opening our borders further is the next step to allow for our economic recovery. The measures being announced reflect broadly the recommendation of our tourism partners and have been done in full consultation with and the endorsement of our health authorities.”

PONANT Shares its Commitment on World Oceans Day

On the occasion of World Oceans Day, on 8th June 2020, PONANT, the world leader of luxury expeditions, shared its commitment through two projects. These two actions, both linked to the oceans, are part of the twenty or so projects taken up by the company's foundation, created a year ago.

Beach Clean-Up in the Seychelles
The PONANT Foundation supported the clean-up project of the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles led by the Seychelles Islands Foundation and Queen's College. This action, called Aldabra Clean-Up, has triggered a wave of behavioural changes in the Seychelles and internationally, highlighting to a wide audience around the world the impact of plastic pollution on small island nations. Two scientific missions were carried out on board our ships to monitor the island's marine ecosystem.
  • 26,000 kg of marine debris removed from Aldabra in five weeks between February and April 2019;
  • A team of 12 volunteers;
  • 5,000 kg of plastic sandals used by schools to make works of art.

Tracking Humpback Whales
The PONANT Foundation and the NGO Conservation International (CI) conducted a study on the behaviour of humpback whales in Antarctica in February 2020. A CI research team spent 3 weeks aboard one of the company's vessels to collect and analyse information for the scientific community. This mission was carried out with the assistance of the captains and naturalist experts on board and presented to passengers who were made aware of this approach.
  • 6 on-board scientists (Australia and New Zealand);
  • 60 whales listed;
  • 16 hours of underwater recording.

More than 20 projects supported throughout the world by the PONANT Foundation.

Since its creation in June 2019, the PONANT Foundation has supported more than 20 research, awareness-raising and conservation projects. It is active in 3 areas:
  • Supporting innovative initiatives for the preservation of the oceans
  • Supporting the acquisition of scientific knowledge of the polar environment
  • Promoting exchanges with indigenous peoples

"The philosophy that has driven us since the company's creation is the same today: we protect best what we know well. Since 2019, the PONANT Foundation has been working to preserve the oceans and the polar regions and encourage exchanges between peoples. More than 20 research, awareness-raising and conservation projects have been supported around the world." says Jean Emmanuel Sauvée, President of PONANT and member of the PONANT Foundation Board.
