After almost four years in the planning, design and construction, Baillie Lodges flagship property Southern Ocean Lodge has today reopened on the wildly beautiful south coast of South Australia's Kangaroo Island.

Southern Ocean Lodge's original architect Max Pritchard and his team have led the recreation of the property and have included all the features guests loved best along with some considered extras, set for a new era of travel on Kangaroo Island.

The new iteration of the globally acclaimed Southern Ocean Lodge holds almost the same footprint as the original with the Great Room taking centre stage on the island's limestone cliffs and with twenty-three luxurious suites easing along the coastline. In a deft design manoeuvre, the guest suites have been reoriented to open towards the southeast, each taking in uninterrupted views of the Southern Ocean and rolling coastal wilderness. All guest suites feature private decks, an EcoSmart fireplace and sink-in bathtub.

New to the property is the ultra-premium Ocean Pavilion, cleverly designed to offer a single four-bedroom owner's residence or two separate two-bedroom suites to create the ultimate Kangaroo Island hideaway for families and friends travelling together. The Great Room terrace now boasts a wet-edge pool, while spacious new surrounds for the Southern Spa allow for three treatment rooms, a gymnasium, sauna and hot and cold plunge pools.

Designed for a new generation of travel to Kangaroo Island and in the context of a changing climate, Southern Ocean Lodge sets new benchmarks for environmental sustainability in the tourism industry.

Clever design employs cutting-edge technologies including boosted rainwater water capture and solar power generation, smart building materials, a remote-controlled sprinkler system and a reinvigoration of the surrounding natural environment with some 45,000 biodiverse native plants propagated onsite and planted in a natural buffer from the wilderness. Day one of the tour departs Adelaide on a scenic coach transfer to Cape Jervis, travelling through the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula with its vineyards, coastal views and rolling hills. Then enjoy a 45-minute SeaLink ferry cruise to Australia’s third largest island - Kangaroo Island.

Here, embark on an exciting day visiting Frenchman’s Rock, named by members of Nicolas Baudin’s crew on the ship Le Geographe in 1803, the Chapman River Bridge at Antechamber Bay and South Australia’s first ever lighthouse, Cape Willoughby Lighthouse.

Enjoy lunch and wine tasting at the new and unique False Cape Wines Cellar Door surrounded by vineyards and built out of recycled wood, jetty timbers and limestone sourced from the property, before continuing to stunning Pennington Bay, famous for its surfing due to the powerful swells that roll in from the Southern Ocean.

Watch the healthy colony of Long-nosed Fur Seals frolic, rest and play in the waters at Cape du Couedic and take a stroll around the historic Cape du Couedic Lighthouse and Weir’s Cove on this south-western most tip of Kangaroo Island

Next, discover the picturesque and impressive formations of Remarkable Rocks. This cluster of large granite boulders balances dramatically on the cliff edge, which plunges 75 metres into the Southern Ocean, and are the work of nature, which has shaped and eroded them over some 500 million years with the forces of wind, sea spray and rain They really are a photographer’s dream.

Throughout Flinders Chase National Park, take advantage of the opportunity to search for kangaroos, wallabies, and a variety of birdlife. Koalas can even be observed peacefully perched in their eucalypt habitats.

In the afternoon, explore some of the most spectacular beaches on Kangaroo Island and marvel at the stunning coastlines the island has to offer, before returning to Adelaide.

The SeaLink Kangaroo Island Racing Carnival is a three-day celebration of racing, entertainment, food, and wine from Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 February 2022 at the Cygnet River Racecourse. SeaLink is offering punters day packages to attend the famous ‘Kangaroo Island Cup’ race.

COUP FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA AS KI LANDS SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUIT COVER

South Australia has made a huge splash, landing one of three covers for the highly sought-after annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.

Kangaroo Island was up against six international locations (Costa Rica, Kenya, Exuma, Nassau, Puerto Vallarta and St. Lucia) for the highly coveted cover, featuring Camille Kostek.

Other covers featured Tyra Banks (Bahamas) and Alex Morgan (St. Lucia).

On sale and on web and social platforms today, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit has a reach of over 70 million readers globally.

Kangaroo Island was last featured in 1985 when Elle Macpherson was photographed with sea lions on what is now Seal Bay Conservation Park. Australia last featured in Sports Illustrated Swimsuitin 2013.

South Australian Tourism Commission, Chief Executive, Rodney Harrex said this is a major coup for South Australia.

"Securing a cover of such an iconic publication is a wonderful opportunity to showcase one of our prized tourism destinations on the global stage," said Mr Harrex.

The Kangaroo Island shoot took place in September 2018 and features a star-studded cast of models including Samantha Hoopes, Olivia Culpo, Tara Lynn, Myla Dalbesio, Hailey Clauson and cover-girl Camille Kostek.

"The United States represents a huge tourism opportunity for SA and, with a reach of more than 60 million in the US alone, we are sure to capture their attention," said Mr Harrex.

"We expect that the resulting digital reach, through Instagram, Facebook etc. will have a lasting effect in bringing more international visitors to our shores."
