Qatar & Virgin
Velocity Frequent Flyer is giving Aussie travellers even more reason to fly, with a suite of exclusive new perks launching on Virgin Australia’s long-haul international flights (VA1–29). Whether it’s chasing summer in Europe or exploring new corners of the world, Velocity is making the journey smoother and more rewarding than ever.

After tripling the number of available Reward Seats for Velocity members on flights between Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne to Doha for travel until February 2026, Velocity is raising the bar yet again, dialling up the benefits for members flying on Virgin Australia’s long-haul services to the Qatari capital.

Leading the charge is an Australian airline-first perk - a USD$20 “Dine on Us” voucher to spend at select restaurants and cafés at Hamad International Airport, recently named the World’s Best Airport at the 2024 Skytrax World Airport Awards. Linking the voucher is easy: each member (including children) just need to add their Velocity Frequent Flyer number to their booking before check-in to enjoy a bite between flights².

Other great benefits available across all Velocity membership tiers, include:
  • Business Upgrades⁵: From 1 July 2025, all Velocity members can request upgrades using their Points from Economy Flex fares to Business Class on Virgin Australia long-haul flights (VA1-VA29) up to 24 hours before departure, giving members greater flexibility to enjoy the world-class Qsuite experience on their long-haul flight. Gold and Platinum members can use their Points to upgrade to Business class on both Flex and Choice fares.
  • Advance Seat Selection⁴: Gold and Platinum members can access complimentary Advance Seat Selection for themselves and up to eight guests on the same booking, including on Preferred and Extra Legroom seats. Red and Silver members receive discounted rates (10% for Red, 20% for Silver) when purchasing seat selection for Economy Choice and Economy Reward Seat fares.
  • Family Pooling⁶: Velocity’s exclusive Family Pooling benefit allows members to combine Points and Status Credits with up to five other family members living at the same address, fast-tracking their way to rewards. A family of four holding Red status flying from Sydney to Paris via Doha on return Economy Flex fares with Qatar Airways could earn 86,000+ Points and 1,120+ Status Credits.
  • Gold and Platinum Velocity members will also receive further benefits when travelling on Virgin Australia flights from Australia to Doha, such as:
  • Lounge Access³: Velocity Gold and Platinum members receive complimentary access to Qatar Airways owned and operated lounges, as well as third party partner lounges.
  • Additional Checked Baggage Allowance⁷: More baggage allowance when flying on a flight with a Virgin Australia (VA) or Qatar Airways (QR) number, depending on fare type and route.
  • Priority Baggage, Check-in and Boarding⁸: Fast-track your airport experience with priority baggage handling, check-in and boarding, including access to Business Class counters when flying on Qatar Airways-operated services.

Velocity Frequent Flyer CEO Nick Rohrlach said the new benefits are designed to make travel more rewarding and seamless for Velocity members and give them more reason to fly Virgin Australia on their long haul international trips.

"We know our members value great rewards when they fly and our expanded benefits on these new services to Doha deliver exactly that - more upgrade options, more perks, and a better travel experience,” Rohrlach said.

CT Partners Welcomes Approval of Qatar Airways’ Investment in Virgin Australia

Virgin
In a significant move for the Australian travel industry, CT Partners has welcomed the Federal Government’s approval of Qatar Airways’ acquisition of a 25 per cent stake in Virgin Australia. This strategic investment is set to strengthen international travel options and enhance competition, particularly for premium-class travelers.

As Australia’s leading independent travel-buying network, CT Partners has solidified its position in the industry, with its Total Transaction Value (TTV) surpassing $2 billion in FY24. This includes an impressive $1 billion generated from preferred airline production, cementing its status as the third-largest travel buying group in the country.

Increased Capacity and Enhanced Competition

The approval of Qatar Airways’ investment brings significant benefits to Australian travelers, particularly through the Virgin Australia–Qatar Airways wet lease agreement. The addition of 28 services per week is expected to provide much-needed capacity, especially for business and first-class cabins. With economy airfares to Europe stabilizing or decreasing in 2025, the increased competition will ensure better pricing for premium cabin seats, offering greater value to corporate and leisure travelers alike.

CT Partners CEO Matt Masson emphasized the positive impact of this development:

“The additional 28 services per week via the Virgin Australia–Qatar Airways wet lease will provide a much-needed boost to business and first-class capacity. The extra competition will ensure better-value premium cabin pricing, as while economy airfares to Europe have stabilized or decreased in 2025, business and first-class cabins have continued to increase year to date.”

Enhanced Connectivity and Premium Travel Experience

Qatar Airways is renowned for its extensive route network, particularly across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. As a member of the oneworld alliance, the airline provides seamless connections for Australian travelers, further strengthening Virgin Australia’s global footprint.

One of the standout features of Qatar Airways’ fleet is its commitment to in-flight innovation. The airline has equipped 30 aircraft, covering 50 per cent of its Boeing 777 fleet, with Starlink Wi-Fi—an upgrade that is expected to be a game-changer for corporate travelers relying on connectivity during flights.

Masson added:

“The Qatar Airways route network in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa is extensive — it’s part of the oneworld alliance, and the in-flight product is award-winning. Starlink Wi-Fi has been fitted on 30 aircraft, covering 50 per cent of its B777 fleet, which is a game-changer for Australian corporate travelers.”

A Bright Future for Australian Travelers

The approval of Qatar Airways’ stake in Virgin Australia marks an exciting chapter for the Australian aviation industry. With increased flight capacity, competitive pricing, and enhanced travel experiences, both business and leisure travelers stand to benefit from this partnership.

CT Partners remains at the forefront of industry advancements, ensuring its network of independent travel agencies continues to provide exceptional value and service to their clients.

  • Virgin Australia and Big Red Group’s domestic travel brand, Experience Oz, have commenced a multi-year partnership giving millions of Australians better value, choice and more access to popular travel experiences when booking at virginaustralia.com.

Experience Oz, one of Australia and New Zealand’s largest tour and attractions marketplaces, covers upwards of 50 regions, and supports over 4,000 experience operators, ranging from cruises, tours, activities and more. The new partnership aims to boost both domestic tourism and the experience economy by providing ease and additional benefits when booking travel and packaged experiences at virginaustralia.com.

Amidst the high cost of living, fun-filled holidays for Australians will be more possible, with Experience Oz’s 4,000+ adventures available for Velocity members to book now using Points to pay for all or part of the booking with Points + Pay. Velocity members will now also have thousands of additional ways to earn Points.

To celebrate the new partnership, any experience booking made at virginaustralia.com before 11:59pm AEST 27th November 2023, will go in the running to win their dream holiday with two Virgin Australia domestic return flights and a $1,000 Experience Oz voucher*. Plus, until midnight 27th November members will earn triple Points (9 Velocity Points) as part of a limited time promotion^.

Virgin Australia Group Chief Commercial Officer, David Emerson said partnering with one of the country’s largest experience marketplaces will give Virgin Australia guests and Velocity members more value and choice.

“We are excited to be partnering with Experience Oz, marking a wonderful addition to the Virgin Australia family – one that will make the next family holiday more possible for millions of Australians,” said Mr Emerson.

“From today, the partnership will give our 11.5 million Velocity members thousands of additional ways to earn and redeem Points at a time when value and getting more from your dollar has never been so important.

“We are also proud to be supporting the experience economy and thousands of operators across the country by making it easier and more convenient for our guests to book a flight and experience all on our website,” he said.

Big Red Group co-Founder and CEO, David Anderson said the partnership will continue to power the company’s mission of shifting the way people experience life.

“We know that Australians will continue to prioritise travel, both for personal experience and to support the recovering industry,” Anderson said.

“But with the cost of living crisis becoming more acute, identifying ways to increase the value of experiences, and to ensure travellers have the chance to make memories on trips that might be closer to home, is key.

“Enabling Aussies to both earn and redeem Velocity Points when booking experiences is a key way we’re looking at creating more value for consumers.

“We’re proud to partner with Virgin Australia to continue to support our 3,000 operator businesses, and to help Aussies continue to connect.”

With Big Red Group leading the growth of the experience economy locally, its partnership with Virgin Australia is the first of multiple to come for Experience Oz.

Virgin Voyages Announces USD$550 Million in Funding Led by Ares Management to Further Accelerate Growth

Virgin Voyages
Virgin Voyages (the “Company”), the multi, award-winning cruise brand from Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, today announced it has closed on a USD$550 million capital raise to accelerate its growth plans. The funding round was led by funds managed by the Private Equity Group of Ares Management (“Ares”), a leading global alternative investment manager, and also includes additional capital from existing investors including Virgin Group and Bain Capital. The new funding raise will enable Virgin Voyages to strengthen its financial position while supporting the brand’s rapid expansion into international markets, with a relentless focus on creating an outstanding and innovative customer experience.

As Virgin Voyages looks ahead to its next phase of growth, the Company further announced that
founding Chief Executive Officer, Tom McAlpin, is retiring as CEO and transitioning to the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors. He will continue to support the brand and team at an executive and industry level. Nirmal Saverimuttu, who currently serves as President and Chief Experience Officer, has been appointed the new Chief Executive Officer.

“It is hard to express just how proud I am of all that the Virgin Voyages Crew has created and the strong endorsement we are receiving from Ares. We have won numerous industry awards and received many five-star reviews because of our passion for this brand,” said McAlpin. “While I will miss the day-to-day, I believe it is the right time to step aside as CEO. Nirmal is a great friend and experienced leader who lives and breathes the Virgin Voyages culture. I know he will help take this amazing brand and Crew to new heights, and I look forward to continuing to support the leadership team as Chairman.”

Virgin Voyages officially launched in August 2021 and currently operates three ships, servicing the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and by the end of the year, Australia and New Zealand. The brand is already making waves, including being named No. 1 in the mega-ship category in the 2023 Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards and a recent clean-sweep of the five cruise categories in the 2023 Cruise Critic Cruisers’ Choice Awards.

“With this new investment alongside our partners at Virgin Group and Bain Capital, we believe the Company is on strong footing to capitalize on its differentiated product and value proposition in the growing cruise industry,” said Aaron Rosen, Partner and Co-Portfolio Manager of Special Opportunities in the Ares Private Equity Group. “We believe that Virgin Voyages continues to be at the forefront of industry growth, and we look forward to working with Tom, Nirmal and the entire management team on this next chapter,” added Jordan Smith, Partner in the Ares Private Equity Group.

“The success of this capital raise shows how much Virgin Voyages has achieved and how much further it can go. We are very proud of the experience that Virgin Voyages has created and continues to deliver every day across its fleet,” said Josh Bayliss, CEO of the Virgin Group. “At Virgin, we have always aimed to create extraordinary experiences and challenge the status quo while putting purpose at the core of everything we do. With Tom at the helm, Virgin Voyages has established itself as a company that can do that consistently. We are so grateful for his and the team’s leadership in creating a truly brilliant business and look forward to this next phase of the Company’s growth.”

Saverimuttu was a founding leader of Virgin Voyages and joined the business as Chief Commercial Officer in 2014 from the Virgin Group after successfully closing the first investment round. In early 2021, he took on the expanded role of President and Chief Experience Officer.

“I want to send our deepest thanks, on behalf of all our Crew and the Board, to Tom for his leadership and passion for the business. We are so grateful for all he has done and are thrilled to continue to partner with him as our Chairman,” said Saverimuttu. “Virgin Voyages is a beloved brand because of our Crew’s dedication and passion for delivering epic experiences for our guests. I am looking forward to working with the Ares team and our existing investors to deliver on our growth and expansion plans as we look ahead to our very bright future.”

Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC served as exclusive financial advisor and sole placement agent to Virgin Voyages. Kirkland & Ellis LLP served as legal counsel to Virgin Voyages. Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP served as legal counsel to Ares.

Virgin Voyages Expands Globally, Introduces 19 New Destinations & 27 New Mermazing Itineraries

Resilient Lady
Virgin Voyages, Richard Branson’s award-winning cruise line, is introducing 19 new ports and 27 epic new itineraries available through April 2025.

Spanning all corners of the globe, the new offerings feature nine incredible new ports of call in Australia, new seaside gems in the Caribbean and a return to the UK, all following strong Sailor demand.

Named the Number 1 mega-ship ocean cruise line in Travel + Leisure’s 2023 World’s Best Awards, Virgin Voyages is loved for its incredible value, exclusively adult experiences, Michelin chef-curated menus, impeccable service and focus on relaxation and wellbeing. A brand celebrated for its fresh approach to sailing, Virgin Voyages is giving guests what they’ve been craving with its broadest selection of destinations along with new summer and winter itineraries debuting across the fleet.

“Over the past year, our repeat Sailor rates have tripled and our loyal travellers have been asking for more destinations to visit. We have listened to their calls and delivered in a big way with new ports, fresh itineraries and more amazing experiences,” said Shane Riley, Vice President, International Sales and Marketing, Virgin Voyages.

“For Aussie sailors, we are excited to add nine new ports to our cruises down under. From the end of 2024, Sailors can choose from 15 new itineraries and now visit some of Australia’s most stunning destinations including Port Douglas, Kangaroo Island and Broome.”

With this new announcement, Virgin Voyages’ fleet will offer a total of 63 itineraries to some of the world’s most inspiring locales. Among the new options are what the brand is calling its “Seachange Series.” These reimagined repositioning voyages offer more opportunities for travellers to extend their holidays and explore the world at large.

Details on the current deployments and what to look forward to aboard each ship are included below.

Resilient Lady

After returning from her inaugural season in Australia, Virgin Voyages’ newest Lady will sail three itineraries from her homeport in Athens from May through July 2024. On the agenda are the popular “Greek Island Glow” to the islands of Santorini and Mykonos; “Adriatic Sea and Greek Gems,” sailing along Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast before stopping in Kotor and Corfu; and finally “Starry Nights in Greece & Croatia,” which offers a mix of the other two seven-night itineraries.

Resilient Lady
Back by popular demand, Virgin Voyages will also return to its British brand roots with a series of three-to-six-night sailings aboard Resilient Lady. Kicking off in mid-August 2024 and running through September, highlights include “English Sights and European Delights,” which docks in Le Verdon (Bordeaux), La Coruna and Bilbao. The beautiful cities of Amsterdam and Bruges are also on the docket this fall.

Resilient Lady’s European schedule also includes two fantastic repositioning voyages from Portsmouth to Barcelona, adding Morocco to the brand’s roster of new destinations. On the heels of this voyage, Resilient closes her Med season with a Barcelona to Athens voyage, merging the best of the brand’s signature “Irresistible Med” and “Greek Island Glow” itineraries and introducing Catania, Sicily as well.

Finally, Resilient Lady will set off on a 44-night repositioning from Athens to Australia in October 2024, making stops in awe-inspiring, bucket-list destinations like Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore and Bali along the way. Once Down Under, Sailors have the option of 15 brand new itineraries and 10 new ports including Broome, Albany, Adelaide, Newcastle, Mooloolaba, Port Douglas, Willis Island, Brisbane, Eden and Kangaroo Island. Valiant Lady To start her 2023 winter season, Valiant Lady will return from Barcelona on October 29, 2023 and begin her signature itineraries from Miami such as the “Eastern Caribbean Antilles” and “Western Caribbean Charm.” From January through March 2024, she will operate out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, offering two southern Caribbean voyages originally scheduled for Brilliant Lady including “The Southeastern Caribbean Isles” and “Sunsets in the Lesser Antilles.”

With Scarlet Lady heading into dry dock next year, sister ship Valiant Lady will trade places starting in April 2024. Departing from Miami, Valiant Lady will continue to offer Scarlet’s four- and five-night Caribbean rotations that Sailors love, along with a special six-night “Holidaze and Nights” voyage.

Scarlet Lady

Next summer between May and October 2024, Scarlet will soak up the Mediterranean sun, taking on Valiant Lady’s two seven-night itineraries: “Irresistible Med” and “French Daze and Ibiza Nights.”

On November 3, Scarlet will embark on an 11-night repositioning voyage from Barcelona to Civitavecchia, stopping in Mallorca, Corsica and Sardinia. After a short period in dry dock for general maintenance, enhancements, and recalibrations, Scarlet Lady will spring back into action with a 16-night Transatlantic voyage from Rome to Miami. This new itinerary boasts calls in Funchal (Madeira, Portugal) as well as Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain).

After arriving in Miami on December 14, 2024, Scarlet Lady will offer Valiant’s signature six and eight night winter voyages through the spring of 2025 including “Western Caribbean Charm” and the “Eastern Caribbean Antilles.” Originally debuting in the fall of 2022, these longer routes from Miami feature late-night stays in San Juan, authentic experiences against the beautiful and rugged landscape of Roatan, and a taste of the US Virgin Islands with a day-trip to St. Croix.

Brilliant Lady

While having introduced three mid-sized vessels in less than two years is an industry first, even Cruise Critic’s No. 1 cruise line (voted by readers) is susceptible to global issues. Despite careful planning, Virgin Voyages is facing unexpected construction, supply chain and staffing challenges that have delayed the introduction into service of its new ship, Brilliant Lady. The award-winning brand has established industry leading service and experiences, and given the challenges outlined, has made the tough decision to postpone Brilliant Lady’s highly anticipated launch. Virgin Voyages is evaluating new possible launch dates when it is able to deliver the standards the brand’s Sailors have come to expect.

Brilliant Lady
"Virgin Voyages is hoping to make a big splash in Australia and has already scheduled its second season Down Under, but even the strongest travel brands face unforeseen challenges every now and then," Riley added. "We know Aussies will love the new ports and itineraries as much as we do, and we can't wait for Resilient Lady's arrival later this year."

Always wanting to do right by its Sailors, Virgin Voyages will offer anyone impacted by the new itineraries price-and-promotion-protected options to rebook and receive USD$300 - USD$600 in Sailor Loot or a full refund.

Travellers wanting to experience one of the exciting new ports can take advantage of 30% off Med 2024 voyages and up to a USD$600 Bar Tab when they book by September 28. A handful of select Caribbean sailings and repositioning voyages are also eligible for $500 off.

Starting Monday, the new itineraries will be available to view and book. Please visit www.VirginVoyages.com or contact your First Mate (travel advisor).

  • Hosted by Matty J with surprise performance from double platinum singer Kita Alexander and heartwarming moments with Timomatic, Darryl Brohman and surfer Owen Wright, sick children and their families from all over Australia enjoyed an unforgettable weekend on “Happiness Island” (Hamilton island) and Whitehaven Beach

Starlight Children’s Foundation (Starlight) and Virgin Australia transformed the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, Hamilton Island, into “Happiness Island” to celebrate their monumental 13,000th Starlight Wish milestone.

To mark the special occasion, Starlight, Virgin Australia and Hamilton Island brought together 10 sick kids and their families from across Australia for an unforgettable VIP weekend full of fun, laughter and special memories in one of Australia’s most sought-after holiday destinations.

To kick off the festivities, families were welcomed into the Virgin Australia lounge by Starlight Ambassadors, media personality Darryl Brohman and singer-songwriter Timomatic, before taking a fun-filled flight up to the picturesque Hamilton Island, where they were warmly welcomed by the kids of Hamilton Island Community School.

The celebrations continued with an official welcome dinner emceed by TV personality, Matty J, a surprise intimate performance from Kita Alexander and a spectacular fireworks display.

Throughout the weekend the Hamilton Island Community provided the kids and families unforgettable experiences, including a thrilling Whitehaven cruise, a bowling and pizza night, and a sunny beach BBQ!

Enjoying the festivities will be Starlight Wish recipients:
  • 9y/o Tyson from Sydney with chronic granulomatous disease
  • 9y/o Xavier from Brisbane who is in remission from stage 3 bladder cancer
  • 11y/o Talan from Cairns who has rare perthes disease

Also receiving her wish for the very first time, was 15y/o Lara from Canberra, who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. Lara wished for a relaxing family holiday to Hamilton Island – which was granted at “Happiness Island” as Starlight’s official 13,000th Wish!

When sick kids’ worlds are filled with hospital and treatment, a Starlight Wish is an incredible gift of happiness, giving sick kids something fun to look forward to and creating new memories to treasure forever.

With wishes ranging from theme park adventures, and celebrity meet and greets, to zookeeper experiences and performing at the Sydney Opera House, each family attending the weekend has been positively impacted by Starlight’s Wishgranting program over the last ten years.

Starlight CEO Louise Baxter said: “At Starlight we recognise being sick shouldn't mean missing out on the happiness of childhood. Happiness is one of the strongest determinants to how we perform in education, employment and long-term healthy life behaviours.”

“For 35 years, Starlight has been granting children their life-changing Starlight Wish. Since Virgin Australia came on-board, we have seen these important moments of happiness and connection truly soar – taking children and their families on holidays they couldn’t otherwise experience. These adventures create lasting memories and provide a sense of hope when it is needed most” Louise Baxter said.

Travel and holiday wishes are the most popular wish choice, with almost half of Starlight Wishes involving air travel with official Wishgranting partner, Virgin Australia.

Virgin Australia Chief Marketing Officer, Libby Minogue said: “Since our partnership began in 2010, Virgin Australia has helped Starlight grant almost 3,000 wishes, flying kids to unforgettable experiences and holidays across the country,” they said.

“Set against the incredible backdrop of Hamilton Island, the 13,000th Starlight Wish milestone was one to remember. From a pre-flight experience in our Lounge, to games onboard and surprise mid-flight entertainment, it is an incredible privilege to make the journey even more wonderful for Starlight kids and their families.”

Over the last decade, Hamilton Island has welcomed over 250 sick kids for their Starlight Wish. This year alone, 12 sick kids have travelled to Hamilton Island for their Starlight Wish, with at least 12 more booked to travel before the end of the year.

Hamilton Island CEO, Pete Brulisauer said: “We’re delighted to see Hamilton Island play a role in the celebration of 13,000 Starlight Wishes, and grateful for the opportunity to partner with Starlight and Virgin Australia to make a meaningful difference in the lives of these deserving kids. I’m also pleased to see the Hamilton Island Community come together to support this event, from our school and local fire brigade to the various businesses that operate on the island. A big thank you to AV Partners and Skylighter Fireworks for the services they provided in kind to make this a truly special event.”

Starlight relies on corporate partnerships and the community to help fulfill life-changing Starlight Wishes. With over 700 sick kids still waiting for their Starlight Wish this year, the need for ongoing support continues.
