Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Tamworth Powerstation Museum in Tamworth, New South Wales, and it proved to be a fascinating and educational travel experience. For anyone interested in Australian history, technology, heritage or the everyday objects of the past, this unique museum offers an engaging glimpse into how electricity transformed life in Tamworth and beyond.

What makes the museum particularly special is its connection with Tamworth’s place in Australian history. In 1888, Tamworth became the first town in Australia to be lit by municipal electric street lighting. The museum stands on the historic site where the steam engines powered that early street-lighting system.

Stepping Back Into Everyday Life

As I explored the museum, I was particularly interested in the collection of old electrical appliances and household items. I saw old televisions, vacuum cleaners, jugs and a fascinating variety of light bulbs.

Seeing these objects in person made me realise just how dramatically household technology has changed. Modern televisions are slim and lightweight, vacuum cleaners are designed with convenience in mind, and electric jugs have become an everyday kitchen essential. The older appliances were often much larger and had very different designs from the products we use today.

For me, these displays were more than just old objects. They provided a fascinating connection with the everyday lives of previous generations and showed how electrical technology gradually became part of Australian homes.

The collection of different light bulbs was another highlight of my visit. Something as simple as a light bulb has undergone significant technological development, and seeing different examples together made that progression much easier to appreciate.

The museum's collection covers the history and social impact of electricity, including household appliances, industrial equipment and developments in electrical science and design. The collection contains approximately 9,500 objects of historical, cultural and social significance.

The visit also made me reflect on how dependent we are on electricity today. We use it for lighting, cooking, cleaning, entertainment, communication and countless other activities. It is easy to take this convenience for granted until we see how different everyday life was before modern electrical technology became widespread.

My visit to the Tamworth Powerstation Museum was enjoyable, informative and memorable. Rather than simply reading about technological history, I could see actual objects and understand how electrical innovation influenced ordinary people's lives.

The museum is also home to two John Fowler steam-driven engines, which are working replicas associated with the beginnings of Tamworth's electric street lighting. Visitors can experience the engines operating at selected times during the year.

I would recommend adding the Tamworth Powerstation Museum to a Tamworth travel itinerary, particularly for visitors interested in Australian heritage, science, technology and local history. This highly anticipated talent quest, now a staple of the Festival, provides a powerful platform for emerging artists to showcase their voice, hone their skills, and kick-start their musical careers.

Open to young performers aged 17 and under, The Golden Gig attracts aspiring singers from across Australia and beyond, offering a rare opportunity to perform in front of industry professionals and a passionate audience. Contestants also stand a chance to win exciting prizes, including monetary awards, professional mentoring, and musical equipment—all designed to help take their careers to the next level.

The Golden Gig Experience: A Stepping Stone to Success

Among the many talented young performers who have benefited from The Golden Gig is 15-year-old Lucy Beveridge from the Upper Hunter. Lucy’s journey with The Golden Gig began in 2024, where she impressed the judges and earned second place in the 13-17 years age group. A highlight for Lucy was the opportunity to perform with the provided Golden Gig band, something she doesn't often get to experience.

“I don’t get to play with a band often. I loved performing my original songs with them. The Golden Gig also gave me the opportunity to share my original songs with a wider audience,” Lucy said, reflecting on her time in the competition.

Lucy’s experience didn’t end with the talent quest. Her involvement in The Golden Gig opened doors to further professional opportunities, including performing alongside the Bushwackers—triple Golden Guitar winners and Roll of Renown Inductees—in a new rendition of the iconic song “I Am Australian (Youth Collaboration)”. Lucy also had the chance to perform live with the band at the Hats Off To Country event in Tamworth in July 2024.

“The Golden Gig has given me so much confidence as a musician, and I grew and learned a lot from the experience. I would really encourage young performers to enter as it’s such a fantastic opportunity,” she added.

A Launchpad for Future Country Music Stars

The Golden Gig continues to serve as a crucial stepping stone for young talent. Festival Manager Barry Harley highlights how the competition plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of country music.

“The Tamworth Country Music Festival is dedicated to discovering and nurturing young talent in the country music industry. This partnership with McDonald’s helps provide aspiring artists with a platform to showcase their skills and gain valuable exposure. We are proud to support the next generation of country music stars,” Barry said.

Over the years, several Golden Gig alumni have gone on to achieve great success. For example, 2022 Golden Gig finalist Lane Pittman went on to compete on The Voice, tour with US star Luke Combs, and received his first Golden Guitar nomination in 2023. Meanwhile, 2024 Golden Gig winner Maia Fletcher will return to the 2025 Festival, performing with her band The Dollys at various free and paid concerts.

Mentorship and Prizes for Aspiring Stars

Returning as the official Golden Gig ambassador is 6-time Golden Guitar winner Amber Lawrence, who credits Tamworth’s talent quests for helping launch her own career.

“The music industry can be so tough, especially when starting out young. The Golden Gig gives artists an amazing opportunity to perform in front of an appreciative audience and professional judges. Thanks to Macca’s for providing a platform for young people to learn, grow, and excel,” Amber said.

In addition to the invaluable exposure, entrants in The Golden Gig will compete for major prizes. Winners in the 12 years and under category will be in the running for three professional mentoring opportunities, an electric-acoustic guitar, up to $500 cash, and a $250 Capitol Music voucher.

The 13-17 year-old category will see its winner awarded a spot at the Country Music Association of Australia’s Junior Academy, valued at $3,300, as well as three separate professional mentoring opportunities, an electric-acoustic guitar, up to $500 cash, and a $250 Capitol Music voucher.

A NEW ROUTE FOR ICONIC COUNTRY MUSIC PARADE

The Country Music Parade

The 2025 Toyota Tamworth Country Music Parade promises to be an exciting and vibrant highlight of the 53rd Tamworth Country Music Festival. This iconic event, set to take place on Saturday, January 25, 2025, will feature an updated route and a fresh, reimagined format that enhances the experience for both participants and spectators.

Key Highlights:

• Route: The parade will start at 9:00 AM from Peel Street, just south of Hill Street. It will travel north, turn left onto White Street, then left onto Kable Avenue, concluding at the intersection of Kable Avenue and Hill Street. The entire route spans approximately 1 kilometre.
• Participants: Local community groups, businesses, venues, and artists will join the parade, bringing a colorful mix of performances, decorations, and country music energy.
• Theme: The 2025 parade's theme is "Country’s Always Been Cool in Tamworth!" This invites participants to showcase their best creative interpretations of what makes country music and culture "cool," with an emphasis on dressing up, carrying props, banners, flags, and other fun items.

In early 2024, US based artists Lainey Wilson made light of the trend in her hit single ‘Country’s Cool Again’. But as the 53rd Tamworth Country Music Festival edges closer, it’s evident country’s always been cool in Tamworth!

Proclaimed Australia’s ‘Country Music Capital’ in 1969 by Radio 2TM, Tamworth hosted its first Country Music Festival four years later. In the lead up to the 2025 event, Tamworth is reinforcing its position as the home of country music and embracing the popular move toward the authentic look and sound which attracts hundreds of thousands of people to the Region every January.

For 10 jam-packed days in January, 2025, Tamworth will welcome thousands of visitors to the nation’s largest celebration of country music. Held during the Summer School Holidays, it’s an event not only for music lovers, but for families, young adults, party-goers and travellers. The festival features hundreds of artists performing free and ticketed shows. Tamworth is where memories are made.
On Tuesday 8 October, two of Australia’s “coolest” country music singers Max Jackson and Wade Forster strutted their way through Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall, decked out in their own cool classic country gear. Their authentic outfits stood out in a stream of business attire and urban casual wear. Confident and striking, Max and Wade captured the essence of what it means to be country.

Newcastle-based artist Max Jackson is a country girl through and through, having grown up in Coonamble, in regional New South Wales. Max rose to fame, winning Toyota Star Maker in 2022. This year she was awarded her first Golden Guitar award for New Talent of the Year. She will return in 2025 to host the Awards alongside singer James Johnston. Max Jackson is also an official ambassador the Tamworth Country Music Festival. On October 4, she released her latest single “Hold My Horses”.

Wade Forster is an upcoming force in the country music industry and in January 2024, he was crowned 44th Toyota Star Maker winner. Born in outback Queensland, Wade was raised listening to country music. He’s also a professional rodeo cowboy! Wade continues to release new music, including his latest single “Off The Drugs” and will perform his own show during the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2025.

Point your fingers and get ready to wiggle in January! The Wiggles are taking a road-trip to Australia’s Country Music Capital and will perform two shows during the Toyota 53rd Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2025!

The multi award-winning children’s music group have today released a new single and video that promises to rev up the fun. Big Red Ute is a lively country-rock infused anthem that invites young listeners (and parents alike) to hop on board for ang exciting musical journey and sing all the way to Tamworth!

For the first time ever, The Wiggles have also unveiled their brand new, official roadworthy vehicle, the Big Red Ute.

Anthony Wiggles says Big Red Ute is a playful nod to the Wiggles’ original Big Red Car.

“There’s something truly special about taking everyday things like electric windows, cup holders, and the sound of the engine, and turning them into exciting adventures for children. Young minds have a beautiful way of being fascinated by the simplest things.

“A child might hear the ‘vroom’ of an engine or see a window rolling up, and suddenly, it’s magic. ‘Big Red Ute’ is all about celebrating those little wonders that kids notice – things we adults sometimes take for granted.
