A Journey Through Time: Six Civilizations of Ancient Peru

The exhibition is organized around six key themes, tracing the development of Andean societies over millennia. These include the origins of the first civilizations, their complex religious beliefs, rituals, and royal power, as well as their advanced knowledge of trade, agriculture, and the eventual downfall at the hands of Spanish conquistadors. Visitors can explore everything from ceremonial tools and textiles to exquisite ceramics and royal burial treasures—each offering a glimpse into the daily and spiritual lives of Peru’s ancient peoples.

Among the most stunning items on display are body ornaments, textiles, and intricate ceremonial tools that reflect the deep connection between these societies and the supernatural deities they worshiped. The Australian Museum’s (AM) summer cultural blockbuster Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru will be exclusively hosted in Sydney from Saturday 23 November 2024. Tickets go on sale from today for this immersive museum experience which shares the secrets of five ancient Peruvian Empires, dating back more than 3000 years.

Created by Peru’s Museo Larco and Museo de Sito Manuel Chavez Ballon, in conjunction with Neon Global, the exhibition features 134 priceless artefacts including gold treasure from royal tombs, glittering jewels, intricate masks and objects of worship. Visitors will also be able to see the Virtual Reality (VR) experience, Machu Picchu and the Spirit of the Condor, which includes a bird’s-eye tour of Machu Picchu while sharing the intriguing story of grand Inca emperor Pachacuti.

Australian Museum Director and CEO, Kim McKay AO said the Australian Museum is honoured to host this priceless collection of ancient Peruvian artefacts, including the most opulent collection of Andean gold to ever travel outside of Peru.

“One of the Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is a top bucket-list destination for many Australians, and this exhibition will further inspire visitors with its state-of-the-art storytelling alongside treasures from these intriguing ancient empires,” she said.

Produced by Neon Global, the exhibition is exclusive to the Australian Museum and Sydney will be the fourth city in the world to host this blockbuster following on from Boca Raton, Florida, USA; Paris, France; and Milan, Italy.

Consul-General of Peru, Mr José Alberto Ortiz, said the exhibition will contribute to the cultural connection between Peru and Australia.

“I’m delighted that the Australian Museum will be hosting this exhibition highlighting the rich history and culture of ancient Peru, enabling the people of NSW and beyond to experience Machu Picchu and all our country has to offer,” Mr Ortiz said.

“Through the representation and interpretation of the myths and rituals of Andean civilizations and their rediscovery and reappraisal in the 21st century, it seems possible to reconstruct the foundational images of modern Peru."

“I know the public will be captivated by our unique culture dating back more than 3000 years and will be fascinated by the stories of five empires which are still present in our country today,” he said.

According to the Australian Museum, large scale exhibitions like Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru not only contribute to the cultural growth of Sydney, creating vibrant and inclusive intergenerational and cultural experiences, but they also significantly boost the local economy.

“After the success of Ramses and the Gold of the Pharaohs, I’m looking forward to the opening day on 23 November when we will take our visitors on another journey back in time, through the clouds that swirl around the peak of Machu Picchu, and deep dive into a remarkable culture and history,” Ms McKay said.

The previous blockbuster, Ramses and the Gold of the Pharaohs, set new attendance records for the AM during its six-month run (November 2023 – May 2024), and is one of the highest grossing museum exhibitions in NSW’s history, having sold more than 508,000 tickets. A recently released post-exhibition economic impact report demonstrated Ramses contributed more than $57 million to the NSW economy.

The Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru exhibition and VR experience will commence its limited six-month run in Sydney on Saturday 23 November 2024. Ticket prices start at $37.50 for adults, and $20 for children, with VR tickets from $22.

A report by Kampgrounds of America's 2023 report, camping makes up 32% of the leisure travel market, with over 58 million households participating in the pastime in 2022. 

In a September update, KOA revealed that 38% of campers say they will camp this winter, compared to just 17% last year.

‘Trees for Days’ initiative launches to support community and the environment

G Adventures has announced the launch of its new Trees for Days initiative, bringing the empowerment of local communities and protection of the environment and closer together to enact powerful change through travel and tourism.

Announced in Cusco, Peru on World Tourism Day, during the inaugural GX Summit – the first world community tourism summit – Trees for Days asserts G adventures’ commitment to preserving communities and the environment around the world. Moving forward, for every day a traveller is on a G Adventures trip, one tree will be grown, helping to both mitigate carbon emissions and increase support in 17 local communities around the world. The tree-planting projects are in locations that have been severely impacted by climate change through deforestation, or that are currently under threat. By supporting the development of sustainable tourism enterprises within these communities, the travel industry can help protect the environment, as well as create additional income streams for local people, most often benefiting and empowering marginalised Indigenous populations, women, and youth.

In partnership with G Adventures’ non-profit partner Planeterra, which uses community tourism to change lives, and Reforest, which actively supports tree planting and forest conservation work around the world, it is estimated that more than one and a half million trees will be planted each year. Travellers will be able to log into their G Adventures account and keep tabs on their tree grove in terms of how many trees they’ve grown and where they’ve planted their roots.

The small group adventure tour operator has already planted over one million trees after backdating the planting of trees for every day a traveller has joined a trip since 1 January, 2023. Soon, travellers will be able to contribute beyond the end date of their G Adventures trip by continuing to purchase trees in a region of their choice whenever they travel, via their G Adventures account.

Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures, says the vision for the Trees for Days project is to increase the positive impact customers have when travelling with G Adventures, while at the same time supporting communities impacted by climate change.

“As the pioneers of community tourism, supporting local communities is at the core of our DNA. With the increasing urgency to help our planet, I’m thrilled to be announcing our Trees for Days initiative in partnership with Planeterra and Reforest. Our non-profit partner, Planeterra has been instrumental in sourcing the community based tree planting projects, and Reforest - which we invested in last year - is providing the technology platform.

“Our travellers care about making a difference when they travel - and they do that simply by booking a tour with G Adventures. Together, we will address how community tourism can play an important role in helping the planet heal, while uplifting local communities, through reforestation and positive local impact,” says Poon Tip.

Jamie Sweeting, president of Planeterra, says the Trees for Days initiative is a win-win solution for all parties involved.

“The planting of trees not only contributes to the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but it helps promote healthier landscapes and ecosystems such as wetlands, grasslands, and forests, and provides crucial habitats, food, and shelter for wildlife, thus helping to maintain biodiversity.

“Beyond that, helping local environments grow and flourish means they become more resilient to extreme weather events, which protects - and even helps develop - local communities and their sources of income, especially in rural areas. More trees also means cleaner air, and a reduction in the effects of extreme heat,” says Sweeting.

Daniel Walsh, founder of Reforest, added that the Trees for Days programme is a great example of a corporate reforestation program that is not only looking to do some real good for climate, nature and local communities, but will also give customers a very engaging and personalised way to connect with that impact.

“Travellers increasingly want to feel like they are leaving a positive footprint, so a key benefit of this program is that they can feel that sense of ownership of the trees planted for them,” says Walsh.

The Mistura Food Festival, Lima

The 15th anniversary of the annual Mistura Food Festival will take place during the first half of September in Lima, Peru. 

One of the largest food festivals in Latin America, it is a celebration of Peru’s diverse cuisine and culinary traditions. 

The event brings together top chefs and food vendors and gives visitors the chance to sample a wide range of Peruvian dishes, including ceviche, anticuchos (a traditional beef dish) and papa a la huancaína (boiled potatoes in a spicy, creamy sauce made of queso fresco and sautéed). 

Lima visitors can also visit Peruvian restaurant Central, by chefs Virgilio Martínez and Pia Leon, that was declared Best Restaurant in the World 2023 in the 50 Best Restaurants ranking.
