A BIRD? AN HUMAN BEING? OR A DEMON?

crow tengu
In Niodo Park, a massive 10.9-meter-long statue of a crow tengu has been erected in Japan.

On clear days, visitors can enjoy views of the sea and Mt. Daisen from the park.

The legend of the crow tengu has been passed down through the generations in this area, and the crow tengu, with its divine powers and capacity to fly, has become a familiar symbol of Daisen, a town that values nature and looks forward to the future.

With playground equipment and a grassy area that's popular with kids, the park is a common weekend hangout for many families.

Design: Tranquil elegance in the vibrant cultural heart of Macau

The first Capella Hotels and Resorts to open in The Greater Bay Area, Capella at Galaxy Macau brings to the forefront the destination’s vibrant and diverse cultural heritage. Interwoven into integrated resort destination Galaxy Macau™, the 17-storey hotel features 36 expansive Sky Villas. Each Sky Villa boasts a spacious, light-filled private balcony complete with a full-length transparent infinity-edge swimming pool, outdoor lounge, and sunroom. Designed to effortlessly transition between seasons, the coveted Sky Villas feature a hidden winter garden, offering guests the transformative experience of nature’s tranquillity.

Meaningful connections drive the design narrative of the villas, with spaces for guests to bask in the joy of togetherness, such as an entertainment lounge, games room, and a contemporary bar highlighted by rare spirits and cocktails. Meanwhile, the 57 suites boast spacious private plunge pools and expansive balconies offering views of the city’s scenic architecture.

Artful interiors by Bruno Moinard and Claire Bētaille, of the globally esteemed Paris-based interior design firm Moinard Bētaille, build on Capella Hotels and Resorts’ legacy of melding contemporary elegance with distinctive individual design. Eager to create a sanctuary of solace, the duo has curated a haven of effortless sophistication, with radiant interiors — comprising hand-painted wallpaper by Lala Curio — that celebrate the vibrant colours of Macau’s verdant tropical jungles and natural wonders.

Enhancing Moinard Bétaille’s design is a diverse contemporary art collection. The art pieces transcend beyond the decorative, inspiring a sense of contemplation and reflection among guests.

Culinary: Epicurean Odyssey of Global Cultures

Capella at Galaxy Macau’s key gastronomic concept is crafted in association with one of Hong Kong’s brightest culinary stars, Vicky Cheng. A Michelin-starred chef, Vicky Cheng is lauded for his culinary excellence in melding together French techniques with modern Chinese flavours. His restaurant is set to be the most anticipated opening in the region, where Macau’s fascinating East and West influences will allude to his culinary masterpieces. Chef Cheng is also the chef-founder of Vea and Wing, which is currently No.5 on Asia’s 50 Best Awards 2024.

Enriching the dining experience, the restaurant’s sublime design is by award-winning Hong Kong-based interior designer Joyce Wang, of the eponymous design shop Joyce Wang Studio. Wang illustrates a fluid space that resonates with Chef Cheng’s creativity. The notion of exploration and discovery is embedded into her design, where boundaries are meaningfully blurred between guest and chef, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in Chef Cheng’s intimate cooking ritual.

New culinary highlights in Lufthansa Business Class

Board, take off, relax: Lufthansa is constantly developing its product range in all classes in order to provide passengers with a pleasant journey. In Business Class on long-haul flights, new highlights are now being added to the culinary offering. Heiko Reitz, Chief Commercial Officer Lufthansa Airlines, explains: "The entire Lufthansa team is proud to present our new Business Class experience. Our culinary highlights, the celebration of German bread culture and the collaboration with traditional brands such as Ziegler for the new Lufthansa Aperitif Avionic underline the timeless elegance of our brand. The other new products that we will soon be introducing in various travel classes are further steps towards our goal of creating a whole new level of excitement for our guests."

Bread is one of the Germans' favorite foods. There are more than 3,000 different types of bread in Germany, and bread culture has been part of the German UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage for ten years. Lufthansa guests in Business Class on long-haul flights from Germany can now enjoy special bread developed exclusively for Lufthansa by baker-sommelier and World Baker of the Year 2022 Axel Schmitt. The handmade breads, which are only available on board Lufthansa flights from Germany, are baked fresh daily from natural ingredients, do not contain any additives and are served with handmade butter and high-quality olive oil as an appetizer. In each new quarter, there will be a different type of bread specially created for Lufthansa.

Lufthansa guests can also look forward to further innovations in in-flight service in Business Class on long-haul routes. In future, the new signature drink Avionic, as an alternative to water and sparkling wine, will be served with nuts as a welcome drink on board before take-off. The Avionic Apéritif is a special creation by the Ziegler distillery, developed with Sven Riebel, Frankfurt bar icon and "Host of the Year". The drink, which is based on peach notes and wild meadow herbs, is mixed on ice with tonic.

For the first time ever, Business Class guests will be served a vegetarian amuse-bouche, from antipasti to sushi, as a prelude to the first service on board. Fresh fruit will also be added to the dessert menu. There is a new, modular snack offer for the small appetite in between, which varies depending on the length of the route and time of day. This includes snacks, fresh fruit and, on longer flights, fresh salty and sweet treats such as tomato and mozzarella skewers or wraps with pastrami. From June, every passenger will be given a small box of Lindt chocolates in an exclusive Lufthansa design as a farewell gift. Lufthansa Business Class guests will thus be offered an all-round appealing service, from the welcome moment to the farewell gesture.

Record Breaking start for Sri Lanka Tourism 2024

Sri Lanka
In April 2024, the tourism sector of Sri Lanka achieved a significant landmark, highlighted by the Tourism Minister, Harin Fernando, who noted that the first quarter of the year saw the arrival of over 635,000 tourists. This milestone signifies the country’s ongoing recovery and growth in the post-COVID era, with March 2024 alone witnessing 209,181 visitors. The continuous increase in tourist arrivals each month, surpassing the 200,000 mark, points towards a promising year for the nation’s tourism industry.

Record-Breaking Start to 2024 The initial quarter of 2024 has established a new benchmark for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, with the country welcoming 635,784 visitors by the end of March. This surge in tourism is attributed to factors such as the winter travel season, enhanced global connectivity, and an increase in flight services. Although the figures for February were slightly below the 2018 records, the industry has seen a year-on-year growth of 103%, showcasing a solid recovery and a growing global appeal.

Strategic Moves and Future Ambitions The strategic initiatives undertaken by Sri Lanka Tourism have been crucial to this achievement. The efforts to promote the island as a premier destination, leveraging its diverse attractions, have paid off. With ambitious plans for 2024, Sri Lanka aims to attract 2.3 million tourists and generate more than $4.5 billion in revenue, reflecting the sector’s optimism and the wider economic recuperation efforts after the pandemic.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead While the start has been positive, challenges persist. The global economic situation and competition demand continuous innovation and enhancement of Sri Lanka’s tourism offerings. Addressing infrastructure needs and adopting sustainable practices will be vital to sustain this growth. However, the impressive first quarter lays a solid foundation for achieving the ambitious targets set for 2024, indicating a hopeful year for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.

As Sri Lanka moves towards achieving these goals, the early successes of 2024 not only affirm the country’s attraction but also illuminate the path for a sector aiming for a bright future amidst recent challenges. With strategic planning and dedication, the tourism industry in Sri Lanka is well-positioned for continued success.

One of Asia's internationally prominent DJs, DJ Aldrin — who also curated the official playlist for 21 Carpenter — set the vibe for the evening with his genre-bending tunes that pulsated throughout the building.

Guests seamlessly transitioned into Kee’s, the hotel’s Neo-Bistro & Bar, which offers modern European fare alongside a thoughtfully curated array of Pan-Asian dishes. There, they were treated to a refined menu of canapés such as Manchego Cheese Croquettes and Caviar & Shrimp Cocktail, curated by the Michelin-starred Chef and Culinary Director of Kee’s, Andrew Walsh.

The Garden Terrace on Level 3 was transformed into an intimate botanical bar dedicated to Kee’s custom 1936 Gin. This bespoke spirit was meticulously crafted to incorporate distinctive botanicals like green peppercorns that thrive in the terrace’s curated garden, echoing the essence of Carpenter Street's bustling spice trade from the bygone era. Guests were invited to savour the aromatics of the gin while indulging in specially crafted tipples, all while marvelling at the hotel’s architectural feat, where the urban extension was seamlessly stacked atop the heritage shophouses.

Additionally, amidst the intimate setting of the Garden Terrace, guests were transported back in time with a vintage ice cream cart, serving a taste of nostalgia. Live typewritten poetry by The Novel Encounter was also offered, harking back to the building’s past, where classically trained poets penned remittance letters for illiterate migrant workers. Excerpts from these letters are reflected in the hotel’s facade, which grants guests an immersive and memorable experience deeply rooted in the history of 21 Carpenter.

The fete culminated on the Level 9 Rooftop Infinity Pool & Lounge, where guests immersed themselves in the breathtaking panoramic views of the Singapore skyline and Marina Bay while enjoying Telmont Champagne. Against this stunning backdrop was a 360-degree photo booth for guests to remember the night of revelry, with the essence of Singapore's vibrant urban landscape in the distance.

Making a difference together

Recognising the importance of sustainability and community, 21 Carpenter took a proactive approach to minimise waste by reimagining their partnerships. Instead of traditional floral arrangements from partners, which often result in wastage, 21 Carpenter partnered with NVPC to create a sense of community and giving back. Through this purpose-driven initiative, 21 Carpenter aims to raise S$88,000 through donations on giving.sg for migrant worker NGO HealthServe, an Institution of Public Character (IPC) registered charity dedicated to serving disadvantaged migrant workers in Singapore through the provision of holistic and affordable healthcare, echoing the hotel’s historical significance and intertwining its past with present-day philanthropy.

"This meaningful initiative actively bolsters HealthServe’s mission of bringing healing and hope to low-wage migrant workers in need,” said Dr Benjamin Kuan, CEO of HealthServe. “We are deeply honoured to be part of this collaborative endeavour and grateful for 21 Carpenter’s trust and support, which enables us to continue our vital work in Singapore, uplifting migrant workers and building community."

8M Real Estate, owner of 21 Carpenter, also supported this meaningful occasion. In commemorating their 10th anniversary, 8M offered generous financial contributions to 21 Carpenter and donated two prints to bolster their unwavering commitment to local arts and community initiatives. Among these prints was an artwork titled “Amoy Alley” by artist Tay Zhiyong, marking 8M’s inaugural acquisition and symbolising a decade of growth, collaboration and community engagement.

"We were delighted when 21 Carpenter came to us with a clear and innovative idea to design their launch around supporting the local community and promoting sustainable practices," remarked Tony Lai, Chief Operating Officer, NVPC. "This initiative highlighted the power of collective action among different stakeholders and demonstrated how companies can significantly drive positive change within the community as part of their business strategy and activities. 21 Carpenter sets an exemplary precedent for other companies to be inspired by, and we look forward to seeing such efforts multiply in strength and numbers."

“This event marked a pivotal moment for 21 Carpenter as we opened our doors not only to guests but also to our neighbours, creating a space where meals were shared, conversations flourished, and the atmosphere exuded warmth and camaraderie.” shared General Manager Tarun Kalra. "We are more than just a hotel; we are a gateway to Singapore's vibrant stories. Committed to enriching our community, we've infused every corner of our social spaces with meaning and purpose. Partnering with NVPC, giving.sg and HealthServe to support their tireless efforts in serving today's migrant community was deeply meaningful and pays tribute to the labourers who built Singapore and once graced these halls, honouring our heritage as a remittance house.”

Since opening on 6 December 2023, 21 Carpenter has been a beacon of heritage and modern luxury in Singapore. The former remittance house, recognised as the birthplace of banking in Singapore, underwent a contemporary makeover by renowned architectural firm WOHA, resulting in a seamless fusion of old-world charm and elegance.

For those inspired to contribute to the community initiatives, guests are invited to donate at https://www.giving.sg/donate/campaign/21-carpenter-for-healthserve. They can also stay tuned on 21 Carpenter's communication channels for more activations and opportunities to make a difference.

Experience tourism at the centre of visitor economy growth strategy

NSW is leading Australia's post-pandemic visitor economy rebound, surpassing $50 billion in visitor expenditure for the first time in history in the year ending December 2023. This record-breaking contribution from both domestic and international visitors positions NSW as a leader in Australia's post-pandemic visitor economy rebound.

Despite the devastating impacts of COVID-19, visitor expenditure had a compound annual growth rate of 6.4% over the last ten years. The NSW Government has ambitious plans to drive that economic growth to even greater heights. To unlock our state’s full potential, the Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 is being reviewed and evolving to showcase the best of NSW to the world by focussing on the diverse experiences on offer for visitors.

The Government’s new tourism strategy seeks to improve cultural experiences for tourists while also expanding visitation to Western Sydney and regional NSW. The impending opening of Western Sydney International and Newcastle International Airports represents further potential for growth in the sector. The review of the NSW Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 presents a pivotal opportunity to shape the future of the visitor economy in NSW.

The strategy review will seek to formalise the NSW Government’s focus on experience tourism and ensure that the state’s approach to tourism, the NSW Government’s Arts, Culture and Creative Industries Policy (Creative Communities), the night-time economy agenda and the regulatory environments that underpin them, are in lockstep.

Destination NSW is inviting visitor economy stakeholders from across the state to contribute their insights and expertise.

Individuals and organisations are invited to join the conversation and share their perspectives by submitting written submissions online via Have Your Say (submissions close Sunday 2 June).

The NSW Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 was launched in 2021 and included a commitment to review it after three years.

Minister for Jobs and Tourism John Graham said: “NSW has recently achieved a historic milestone, surpassing $50 billion in visitor expenditure for the first time ever. The visitor economy is going from strength to strength. With the looming opening of the Western Sydney International and Newcastle International Airports, it is a perfect time to reassess the opportunities in the sector. Three years on from the development of the strategy, not only does the tourism context in NSW look different, so does the policy direction of the new government.

“An experience tourism focus means thinking about not just bringing people here, but about what they do when they arrive and encouraging them to come back over and over again. Culturally-rich and vibrant communities are what keep people in NSW but they’re also what bring people here.”

A GATHERING SPOT FOR TOTTORI'S FOLK CRAFS

Takasagoya
Takasagoya, a 20-minute walk from Tottori Station in Japan, is a shop selling traditional Tottori crafts in a historic merchant house.

The building is a two-story wooden construction that was constructed roughly a century ago.

Its floor plan, pillar arrangement, and shoji screens all reflect the style of the era.

In Tottori, folk crafts are thriving, and the prefecture is home to over a dozen kilns.

At Takasagoya, tourists can purchase Japanese paper, kasuri, and other crafts in addition to a variety of ceramic items from nearby kilns.

Because every kiln is unique in terms of design, color, and shape, ceramic artwork in particular is a wonderful gift for that someone special.

Tourism leaders from around the world will explore how entrepreneurship and innovation are transforming the global travel sector at ATM 2024

  • Arabian Travel Market 2024 will take place from 6-9 May at DWTC, with the theme: ‘Empowering Innovation: Transforming Travel Through Entrepreneurship’
  • The sold-out Travel Tech space at this year’s edition of ATM will be 56% larger than in 2023, with sector participation growing by a third, year on year
  • ATM 2024 will host over 200 speakers across more than 50 sessions, covering the full spectrum of industry from tourism and hospitality to aviation and MICE

International policymakers and industry leaders are preparing to gather in the UAE for Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2024, where they will examine how entrepreneurship and innovation are reshaping the global tourism industry. The 31st edition of the exhibition will take place at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) from Monday 6 to Thursday 9 May.

Over 200 speakers will participate in more than 50 sessions during the course of the four-day event. Experts from around the world will take to ATM’s Global Stage and Future Stage (formerly the Travel Tech Stage) to address some of the sector’s most pressing issues, including the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI), the future of aviation, how to stand out in the luxury segment, retail tourism, and sustainable travel.

As the Middle East’s leading exhibition for inbound and outbound travel and tourism professionals, ATM 2024 will build on last year’s record-breaking 30th edition with its theme: ‘Empowering Innovation: Transforming Travel Through Entrepreneurship’. Exhibitors and attendees will have the chance to explore new market opportunities, the benefits of collaboration and connectivity, how to attract investment and more. Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: “The future of the global travel industry will be shaped by innovators and entrepreneurs, which is why we are so excited to shine a spotlight on the latest insights and technologies at ATM 2024.

From startups to established brands, this year’s exhibition will showcase fresh thinking on how the sector can enhance customer experiences, drive efficiency and deliver positive economic impacts across the Middle East and beyond.”

Exhibitor participation is expected to be 23% higher than last year, making ATM 2024 the largest edition in the event’s history. Growth is expected across all show verticals, including regional year-on-year upticks for the Middle East (19% larger), Europe (32% larger), Asia (20% larger) and Africa (28% larger). The exhibition’s sold-out Travel Tech space will be 56% greater on the show floor, with products from the sector demonstrating 33% growth year on year. Hotel participation, meanwhile, is projected to be 21% higher than last year.

This year’s edition will once again enable attendees to move beyond traditional leisure travel by exploring opportunities related to luxury, business, and meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE). ATM 2024 will feature an array of discussions on these subjects, including sessions dedicated to premium offerings, healthcare meetings, global business travel, sustainable procurement, sporting events and more.

ATM 2024 will host a selection of regional and international policymakers, including His Excellency Issam Kazim, CEO, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), His Excellency Salem bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism in Oman; Teodora Marinska, Head of Public Affairs, European Travel Commission; Basmah Al-Mayman, Regional Director, Middle East at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO); and Lindsay Bowman Fraser, Leading Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions (MICE), Sport and eSport, Qatar Tourism.

Speakers at ATM 2024 will explore a series of emerging and established market segments, such as experiential, accessible and multi-generational travel, highlighting opportunities for growth, transformation and disruption. Delegates will also consider the implications of advancements in fields such as AI and how these technologies are impacting the Middle East’s travel industry.

“With less than a month to go before the international travel community converges on Dubai, we are looking forward to welcoming our biggest-ever cohort of exhibitors and guest speakers,” Curtis added. “For more than 30 years, ATM has provided a forum in which participants can share insights, overcome challenges and seize opportunities, and the 2024 edition will be no exception.”

Building on ATM 2023’s ‘Working Towards Net Zero’ theme, environmentally responsible travel will represent another key focus this year. Informed by the UAE’s Year of Sustainability and the most recent United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), which took place in Dubai last year, ATM 2024 will explore how innovation can be leveraged to help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), creating a greener travel and tourism sector for future generations.

Held in conjunction with Dubai World Trade Centre, ATM 2024’s strategic partners include Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) as Destination Partner, Emirates as Official Airline Partner, IHG Hotels & Resorts as Official Hotel Partner, and Al Rais Travel as Official DMC Partner.
