The North Pennines National Landscape

The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has relaunched as the North Pennines National Landscape.

The North Pennines is part of the Pennine range of hills, which runs through County Durham in northern England.

It takes in a large section of the Durham Dales and was designated as an ANOB in 1988 ‘for its moorland scenery, the product of centuries of farming and lead-mining’.

It is also a UNESCO Global Geopark and the second largest of the UK’s 49 AONBs.

The now North Pennines National Landscape has open heather moors and deep dales, upland rivers, hay meadows and stone-built villages, some of which contain the legacies of a mining and industrial past.

The organisation’s mission is to protect and look after this nationally important landscape to ensure it can be enjoyed by everyone for generations to come.
