48 Hours To Make The Most Of Autumn In Brisbane

Queenslanders have always enjoyed the Labour Day long weekend in May. Now they will have to be patient now as the Labour Day long weekend has been shifted from May to October. It has been shifted because it was felt there were too many public holidays in the first part of the year. However, people can still get that 'long weekend' feeling in just 48 hours during May with these four itinerary ideas.

1. Take a romantic getaway to Southern Queensland Country

Queensland is blessed with the best of three seasons, and can certainly boast Australia's most envied winter. While most of the state somehow misses out on the stunning golden hues and exciting crunch of crisp autumn leaves, Southern Queensland Country boasts an autumn to remember.

Here, you can drive through winding roads decorated by falling leaves tinged red, orange and yellow. Cuddle up in front of a hearty fire with locally produced wine and cheese at a cosy B&B. Browse at art galleries and while away time in tea shops in friendly small towns. And take an exhilarating hike through the great outdoors, while the autumn sun is shining.

2. Be a tourist in your own capital city

Day 1: Start your day in Brisbane with breakfast at South Bank, amid the lycra-clad cyclists and casually clad locals. Hop on the City Cat and let the mood dictate where you hop off - West End, where the street culture is unmistakably Brisbane, the architecture eclectic and the eating spots diverse; Toowong's classic Regatta Hotel for an afternoon beer and some people watching; New Farm Park for a super playground experience or total relaxation; or casual chic down Bulimba way. Finish your evening back where you started - enjoying a cultural performance at QPAC.

Day 2: Wake up early and drive to Mount Coot-tha to capture sunrise over the city. Then take a day trip out to Moreton Bay, where you can enjoy a cruise, fish and chips overlooking the water, and come home smelling of the sea, ready to start your week.

3. Get out to a National Park

Did you know Queensland boasts five of the twelve World Heritage areas in Australia? Enjoy the mystery of an ancient rainforest revealed at Lamington and Springbrook National Parks in the Gondwana Rainforest Reserves of Australia. Get a breath-taking view at the summit of a peaceful walk on Fraser Island. Learn about significant Australian landmarks interpreted by indigenous guides in Daintree National Park. Walk in the footsteps of the dinosaurs at Riversleigh National Park. Or find your own piece of undisturbed beach on the Great Barrier Reef. From rainforest to reef, desert to classic Aussie bush, national parks are a beautiful way to spend an autumn weekend.

Head to www.queenslandholidays.com.au and search for national parks.

4. Meet a farmer

Morning markets are a favourite in Queensland, and usually a great place to meet a farmer (who may or may not want a wife!). These brave souls keep showing up, even as the mercury drops towards winter temperatures. Prize yourself out of bed while it's still bearable and support them with a stock up on fresh food and produce, made and grown with love.

For a full list of farmers markets in your area contact your local council or visit www.farmersmarkets.org.au

(Of course that won't take a full 48 hours - spend the rest of the weekend cooking, eating, imbibing and sharing with friends and loved ones. Throw in a weekend 'day nap' for digestive purposes and Monday will be there sooner than you can say 'fresh'!)
