CHINA SOUTHERN UPDATE A380’S FOR SYDNEY FLIGHTS

The decision by China Southern Airlines to upgrade their flights into Sydney to the flagship A380 jet was welcome by NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell last week.

Mr O’Farrell met with senior executives from China Southern at Parliament House last week and also visited the airline during his trade missions to China.

The airline announced that from 27 October 2013, one of China Southern’s daily flights will upgrade from an A330 to an A380, adding 162,000 seats to the Guangzhou-Sydney route annually.

It’s expected to add around $118 million in visitor expenditure to the NSW economy.

“This is a big vote of confidence in Sydney as the tourist destination of choice for Chinese visitors and I congratulate China Southern on its investment,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“My Government has worked hard to boost tourism numbers from China,” he said.

“Tourism is a major employer in NSW and vital for creating new jobs and investment.

“It’s also proof our China Tourism Strategy 2012-2020 is working. The strategy has been funded by the NSW Government to the tune of $15 million over the next four years.

“Tourism from China to NSW is currently worth about $1.1 billion a year.

“This plan will directly encourage visitors from China, our largest tourist market and support the NSW tourism sector to achieve industry best practice.

“NSW has the largest share of Chinese visitors to Australia, as well as the largest share of Chinese visitor expenditure. Between July 2011 and June 2012, visitors from China to NSW increased by more than 15 per cent to 335,500.

“During the same period, NSW received more than 60 per cent of all Chinese visitors to Australia, compared with Victoria at 51 per cent and Queensland at 43 per cent.
