Bear-viewing boardwalk to open at Alaska Wildlife Conservation Centre
Located
49 miles south of Anchorage, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Centre is
gearing up for two major updates to its facility this summer. The first
phase of the Bear Education Awareness Research Sanctuary (BEARS),
consisting of a boardwalk spanning the 17-acre black and brown bear
enclosures, is expected to open to the general public by Sunday, May 12.
The BEARS boardwalk allows for guests to safely view more bear activity
in the enclosures at the wildlife centre. Additionally, a new housing
structure is near completion and will house up to 10 interns in the
upstairs portion of the building, with the bottom floor acting as a
shelter for animals against natural elements. This unique structure
allows for increased educational opportunities for interns during their
time at the center.
