An international song writing competition was launched over the weekend at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music. The purpose of the competition is to create a love song which captures the spirit of the Whitsundays and can be used to market the festival and the Whitsunday region to a national and international audience.
Sponsored by a local businessman, Mr Raymond Wang from Whitsunday Chinatown Investment, the objective of the competition is to create a love song which captures the essence of the Whitsundays. Airlie Beach Festival of Music promoter, Mr Gavin Butlin said, “We have invited musicians to write a song which captures the heart, soul and beauty of the Whitsundays. Our dream is to find a truly beautiful song which will help to put the Airlie Beach Festival of Music and the Whitsundays on the world stage.”
The competition, which will run for six months, is open to anyone to enter and there is $5000 prize money for the winning song writer. Mr Wang has also provided further sponsorship to assist with a marketing campaign for the competition and for the Airlie Beach Festival of Music. The song needs to mention local icons such as Heart Reef, the Coral Sea and Whitehaven Beach. It also needs to incorporate cultural references such as love compassion, wisdom, karma, faith, energy and mindfulness so as to engage potential Chinese travellers. All details regarding the competition terms and conditions are available on the website at www.airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au.
This year's Airlie Beach Festival of Music has just wrapped up with hundreds of musicians and thousands of music lovers converging on the lively tourist town for the biggest week of the year. Mr Butlin said, “Airlie Beach has never been busier and the atmosphere was absolutely brilliant all weekend. I had many musicians tell me this is the friendliest music festival they have ever been to and they can't wait to be invited back to play again next year. There were many fantastic performances but my personal highlights were the Black Sorrows, Bondi Cigars, Mason Rack Band and 10cc, who brought the house down last night as the closing act.”
Now in its third year, the Airlie Beach Festival of Music has become a popular fixture on the Whitsunday and Queensland event calendars and has support from Tourism and Events Queensland, Tigerair, Whitsunday Chinatown Investment and Whitsunday Regional Council. The festival, which ran from Thursday 5 November to Sunday 8 November, presents 74 bands and over 200 musicians to an audience of music lovers in an idyllic tropical environment. Headline acts for 2015 included 10cc, Wendy Matthews, The Black Sorrows, Toni Childs, Richard Clapton and Angry Anderson with the James Southwell Band.
