The best travel experiences in Iceland in 2016

A country sprawling with spectacular glaciers, lava formations, geysers and fjords, it’s no wonder that Iceland’s Akureyri topped the list as the best place to visit in Europe for 2015.

For 2016, Trafalgar has listed it as its new destination hot spot, sending travellers around the whole countryside to immerse them in simply the best travel experience.

Trafalgar Asia’s President, Nick Lim, lists the best travel experiences you need to have when visiting Iceland.

Bathe in the Blue Lagoon

A trip to Iceland wouldn’t be complete without bathing in the world famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Situated in a lava field in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, south-western Iceland, you’ll float away as you spend an evening in this oasis of relaxation.

Wander through the Thorbergur Thordarson Museum

Discover the legacy of famous Icelandic writer, Thorbergur Thordarson who grew up on the farm Hali. During this cultural insight you’ll wander through the heritage museum filled with a unique exhibition of the district Sudursveit and Thordarson’s work learning all about his life and what inspired his writing.

Get close up with Icelandic Horses

They’re the horses you see in the postcards, perfectly manicured manes and pony-sized bodies. See these beautiful animals up close and interact with them on a unique Be My Guest experience when visiting the farm of a local family. You’ll spend time with the beautiful horses, learning all about the Icelandic breed, before enjoying a delicious homemade lunch.

Chase Iceland’s exotic waterfalls

Iceland is one of the best countries for chasing waterfalls. From the majestic Gullfoss, known as the ‘Golden Waterfall’, to the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Skogafoss waterfall and Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss, you’ll leave your holiday completely mesmerised by Iceland’s natural beauty and its formations.

Photobomb a Geyser

Located in Iceland’s world-famous Glacier Area beside the Hvítá River is a popular fountain geyser, Strokkur. See the powerful geyser erupt and send a spectacular water and stream column into the air. Surrounded by underground springs and thermal pools, this is the perfect location for any photographer to capture.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Snæfellsnes is a unique area with a variety of geological interest such as lava fields, volcanoes, glaciers, springs, beautifully formed rock, yellow and black sand beaches and caves. However its main attraction, without a doubt, would have to be the Snæfellsjökull glacier – a beautifully shaped strato volcano at the very end of the peninsula. This glacier is also known as the location for John Verne’s novel ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’.

Trafalgar’s 10 day Ultimate Iceland itinerary starts from US$3595 per person. Book before 29 February 2016, and save up to US$405 per person.
