Up in the Air: Thailand's Northeastern Airports Take Off to Boost Tourism

Elevating Secondary Cities Through Air Travel

Thailand is charting a new course for tourism by upgrading airports in three lesser-known but culturally rich northeastern provinces—Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, and Mukdahan. The Ministry of Transport has committed substantial investments to enhance infrastructure, support tourism, and stimulate local economies, aligning with the government’s focus on promoting secondary city travel.

This bold move reflects a growing trend: travelers seeking authentic, off-the-beaten-path destinations. And these provinces, long overshadowed by Thailand’s more famous beach resorts and bustling cities, are ready to shine.

Nakhon Phanom Soars with New Flights and Facilities

Nakhon Phanom Airport is leading the way in Thailand’s regional aviation transformation. Already served by Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air, the airport currently offers 12 daily flights and will add four more starting June 19. The airport is also undergoing a multi-million baht upgrade, including improvements to water and power systems, fire safety, and check-in operations.

A total of 165.99 million baht has been allocated this year alone for airport development, ensuring that passengers enjoy cleaner, safer, and more efficient travel experiences. These upgrades also aim to support a growing number of visitors during high-traffic periods, such as traditional festivals and local events.

Sakon Nakhon’s Skyward Growth

Sakon Nakhon Airport, with four aircraft parking bays and daily flights served by Thai AirAsia and Nok Air, will receive a further 4.29 million baht in upgrades. While the enhancements are more modest in scale compared to Nakhon Phanom, they play a critical role in reinforcing this provincial hub’s importance in the national tourism map.

With its spiritual sites, forest temples, and vibrant local culture, Sakon Nakhon is well-positioned to benefit from increased air connectivity. The airport expansion complements efforts to highlight local experiences that reflect Thailand’s rural soul.

Mukdahan on the Horizon

Mukdahan, perched along the Mekong River, is the third province in the spotlight. While its airport is still undergoing an environmental impact assessment, plans are in place to eventually link the province more directly with major Thai cities.

When completed, Mukdahan Airport will be a gateway to one of Thailand’s most scenic border regions, with strong cultural ties to Laos and the wider Mekong subregion.

Investing in Technology and Tourism Synergy

Beyond physical infrastructure, Thailand is investing in aviation technology upgrades that will ensure safer and more efficient operations. From 2025 to 2029, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand will spend over 359 million baht on projects including Instrument Landing Systems, voice recording systems, and uninterruptible power supplies for navigation stations.

These behind-the-scenes improvements will support rising air traffic and ensure high standards for aviation safety and passenger experience. The upgrades also intersect with initiatives such as the Living Airport concept, which integrates local products, culture, and food into the airport environment—offering travelers a taste of the region from the moment they arrive.

Airports as Anchors for Regional Revival

Thailand’s northeast, often overlooked by international tourists, is rich in natural beauty, heritage, and community life. The airport development plan is more than a logistics project—it’s a vehicle for change. The improved infrastructure will support local events, promote legal agricultural drone use under government models like “One Subdistrict, One Agricultural Drone,” and offer long-term job creation.

By investing in transportation, tourism, and local identity, Thailand is redefining how secondary cities participate in the national economy. As more flights touch down in these provinces, travelers will discover that the journey off the main tourist path can be just as rewarding as any beach holiday.
